Since closure in 1968, the Wedge Mine, situated adjacent to the Nepisiguit River in New Brunswick, has been flooding with acidic water containing toxic levels of heavy metals. Cominco Ltd. has undertaken a series of pollution control measures to mitigate the threat posed to the river quality. Included has been a successful treatment campaign in 1976 which discharged in excess of 30 million gallons of high-quality effluent from the accumulated volume of mine water. The sources of contamination have been identified as actively leaching waste dumps. A comprehensive program of permanent corrective measures has been prepared which will culminate in mine backfilling. Once completed, the unacceptable burden of water treatment in perpetuity at a non-producing property will be removed.

Engineering problems amenable to geophysical attack are illustrated by specific examples. The various methods available, accuracy of results, and costs are treated. The possibilities of new uses of geophysical techniques are pointed out.IntroductionTHE SCOPE of geophysics in engineering is different than in oil or mining exploration. In civil engineering, geophysics solves specific problems; as for example, what is the depth to bed-rock along the axis of a proposed dam? The area to be surveyed is of limited extent, and the subsurface information .sought is relatively near the surface. The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. The geophysical tools employed in the three fields are, however, quite similar; the differences are mainly in the objectives.The Natural Geophysical ExplorationThe terms geophysics and geophysical exploration have been used heretofore and will .be employed in what follows. The question is, therefore, What is geophysical exploration?Geophysical exploration is a line of field work where measurements are made at the ground surface with special instruments to get geological subsurface information. Briefly stated, geophysics is a form of exploration that supplements geological work. Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

Abstract This paper deals with the application of the cyanide process to recover gold from a pyrite concentrate produced by means of differential flotation. This concentrate before cyanidation contains from 0.09 oz. to 0.14 oz. gold per ton, of which only about 60 per cent is recoverable. The rest is so fine that it remains interlocked in the pyrite and therefore is not acted on by the cyanide. The concentrate also contains about 15 per cent pyrrhotite and 0.4 per cent chalcopyrite, both of which are cyanicides. The cyanicidal effect of the pyrrhotite is inhibited by preacracing the pulp with lime, and maintaining a high lime alkalinity during cyanidation. The effect of the chalcopyrice is reduced as far as possible by removing those particles which are free by means of a further flotation step immediately prior to cyanidation. This involves the flotation of some very fine material. After nullifying as far as possible these two cyanicides, the concentrate is cyanided directly, i.e., without being roasted. This leaves the pyrite available for subsequent sale as a source of sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, and the entire residue of the cyamde plant, amounting to about 500 tons per day, 1s now being disposed of in this way. Prior to deciding on direct cyanidation, a number of laboratory roasting tests were made. These showed chat, 1f proper control were exercised, a better recovery of gold could be effected from the roasted product than by the direct method of treatment. The tests also showed that the capital cost o the plant would be much higher than that needed for the procedure adopted. The possibility of subsequently selling the pyrite for its sulphur content would also have been eliminated. Introduction A previous paper has described in considerable detail the application of the flotation process to improve gold recovery from Noranda's milling ore, and in so doing has covered the production of an auriferous pyrite concentrate. The present paper deals with the recovery of gold by cyanidation from that concentrate. This gold, though intimately associated with the pyrite, can, for metallurgical purposes, be considered as all occuring in the native state.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". Giant Yellowknife is located 600 air miles north of Edmonton on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. In its 24 years of operation some 7,730,000 tons of ore have been treated to yield $175,000,000 worth of gold.The gold ore occurs at irregular intervals throughout a fold-like sericite schist zone cutting Precambrian rocks. The ore is characterized by 40 to 80% quartz - carbonate and about 10% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Considerable amounts of stibnite and antimony sulpho-salts are also present. Gold is finely divided in the native state existing in complex association with the sulphides. In most instances stibnite is barren but minor values are evident on occasion. Visible native Fold, quite prevalent in the early operating years, is, practically non-existent today. It was readily apparent from mineral dressing investigations conducted in .1944 that Giant ore would be difficult to treat. By 1948 a flow sheet had been established and operations began. In the ensuing years, changing ore characteristics necessitated modifications to some process steps and complete abandonment of others. By 1962 the major metallurgical problems were solved and all that remained was the refining of operating performance to its highest level.With one or two exceptions today's operation follows the practice established by 1962 (Fig. 1 - Flowsheet).

Plant process optimization programs are often costly, both in technical effort and loss of production. Evolutionary Operation or "EVOP" is a mode of plant operation consisting of controlled cyclical changes in process conditions by which information is provided concerning potential process improvements while both volume and quality uniformity in production are maintained. Its conceptual simplicity and low cost of utilization have led to successful adoption in a variety of industrial manufacturing operations. This paper is an expository account of basic EVOP theory, the problems encountered and the organization required in applying it to a processing plant. Illustrations are provided which indicate the payoff that can result.

"Copper-zinc ores often contain gold and silver, which can be recovered into copper concentrate by flotation as by-product. The challenges for operations that produce copper, zinc, gold and silver are the separation of copper and zinc and the low grade of precious metals. Ashele copper-zinc ore in north China contains 2.38% Cu, 0.69% Zn, 0.21 g/t Au and 18.10 g/t Ag and the plant produces copper and zinc concentrates, with gold and silver being recovered into copper concentrate. Copper occurs mainly as chalcopyrite and Zn occurs as sphalerite. Copper is well recovered with a recovery of over 94%. However, the recovery of Zn is substantially low (around 50%) due to fine grain size of sphalerite. In addition, gold recovery is much lower than expected and only 33% of gold in the flotation feed was recovered. The grade of gold in copper concentrate is also lower than the required payable grade (1.0 g/t). To determine the cause for lower Zn and Au recoveries, a plant survey program was conducted on the operation. The information acquired shows that the loss of Zn was mainly in the copper concentrates (accounting for approximately 38% of the head assay); of which, 24% was liberated, 8.5% was associated with chalcopyrite and 4.6% was associated with pyrite, indicating that the separation of copper and zinc was the main cause for the Zn loss, with liberation being the second cause for Zn loss. Future effort in improving Zn recovery should be focused on the separation of zinc from copper. Gold in the ore occurs as both microscopic gold and submicroscopic gold, accounting for 36% and 64% of the head assay, respectively. Microscopic gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum; it is relatively coarse with a grain size of 10 to 240 µm and a large portion can be recovered by gravity. Submicroscopic gold was mainly carried by pyrite (accounting for 38%), and to a less extent, by tennantite (15%) and chalcopyrite (10%). Gold in sphalerite is nominal (1%). It is suggested that more coarse gold and tennantite be recovered and a gold recovery increase can then be achieved to obtain a copper concentrate with over 1.0 g/t Au through flowsheet optimization. Gravity concentration should be investigated and may be worth added into the existing flowsheet to maximum the gold recovery and grade.INTRODUCTIONCopper-zinc ores containing gold and silver is a subtype of polymetallic sulphide ores. Unlike porphyry copper sulphide ores and iron-oxide copper-gold ores, this type of ores often contains substantial amounts of zinc and lead. Polymetallic sulphide ores are mainly distributed in Canada, such as at the LaRonde and Horne deposits. Other examples include Mt. Morgan in Australia and Boliden in Sweden. Globally, production and reserves from gold-rich VMS deposits account for 1370 t gold. This is equivalent to 1% of the world production and reserves, whereas the Canadian total for gold-rich VMS deposits is 870 t, representing close to 10 % of Canadian production and reserves (Gosselin & Dube, 2005a, 2005b). Flotation is the principal process for processing the copper-zinc sulphides ores, for subsequent smelting, roasting, or hydrometallurgical treatment. Oxidized copper-zinc ores can also be processed using leaching technology. For example, at LaRonde operation (a Cu-Zn-Pb ore containing 3-4 g/t Au and 60-100 g/t Ag) the flowsheet consists mainly of a copper flotation circuit and a zinc flotation circuit followed by a cyanidation process of flotation tails. The precious metals are recovered with copper concentrate, zinc concentrate and cyanidation of zinc tails via Merrill Crowe precipitation (Zhou et al., 2005)."

"The Blind shaft boring method is a mechanised process of excavating large diameter vertical shafts downward from the surface. It is a rotary drilling technique eliminating any requirement for personnel to enter the shaft or access underground workings during drilling and lining phases. Excavated material is delivered to surface carried by a flow of circulating fluid through the centre of drill rods. The drill assembly is suspended from a large A-frame rig and powerful winch at ground level providing vertical thrust to a hard rock cutter head. INTRODUCTION The Southern Coalfields Ventilation Shaft was constructed at a mine, 45 km north-west of Wollongong. The 5 m finished diameter (6.2 m drilled) shaft reaches a final drilled depth of 517 m, the deepest, fully lined blind bored vent shaft to date in Australia. Operated by a mining company in the Southern Coalfields, the expanding mine required a new ventilation shaft and associated surface infrastructure to service future operations. An assessment of future ventilation requirements for the coal seam operations identified a need to improve the capacity and reliability of the existing underground ventilation system in order to ensure a safe and efficient underground working environment. Installation of the new upcast ventilation shaft was determined to be the most cost effective and reliable solution to provide adequate ventilation for underground operations. The completed shaft is smooth and fully lined with steel/concrete composite liners that are hydrostatically sealed. The shaft lining is designed to meet the mine ventilation requirements for a service life of 20 years. The shaft intersects the top of the working section of the coal seam at approximately 513 m of depth. This includes the shaft collar depth and shaft bottom profiled intake section.PROJECT METHODOLOGY AND INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICE The shaft was drilled using the blind bore method, an innovative construction technique and an alternative to the traditional methods of sinking deep and large diameter shafts, such as raise boring and conventional drill and blast shaft sinking. The blind bore method allows the shaft to be drilled from the surface down without anyone having to enter the shaft or the mine during the construction process. This is by far the safest method of shaft construction and is especially suitable for difficult ground conditions where there may be unstable or water-charged strata. As this method involves drilling from the surface downward, shafts can be completed ahead of the underground mine development. Thus, allowing underground operations to focus on development and production without the conflicts of managing ventilation priority for underground contractors and mucking out spoil from excavation workings."

"The development of a DC resistivity instrumentation system for data acquisition in extreme topography yielded an unexpected bonus in the quality and information content of the type of raw data gathered. Not only were traditionally too-rough areas being investigated systematically for the first time, the unique high-density, multi-directional raw data were providing the opportunity to greatly expand the range of conductive and resistive signatures that could be accurately recognized. Using a true 3-D inversion algorithm, 3-D earth resistivity imagery began to show distinctive anomaly patterns for hydrothermal mineralization at the seldom-visited resistive end of the spectrum, successfully imaging epithermal gold systems in conditions that had defied conventional ground and airborne geophysics for years.The traditional mode of designing a resistivity survey to test a specific target concept was shown to be an unnecessary limitation on exploration thinking when a single sweep acquisition of dense, multi-directional 3-D raw data could effectively provide the all-targets “shotgun” coverage that would take 10 or 12 conventional surveys to duplicate. Exploration planning has the opportunity to move from single steps of trial and error geophysical testing to a mode of mapping everything at the outset, and then sorting out what might be of exploration interest in the results. Survey parameterization becomes the non-technical process of marking an outline on a map and declaring “survey here.” Operational and interpretational reasons for not testing where the exploration interest lies have all but disappeared. With any-terrain capabilities and unprecedented raw data density and overlap to support interpretation of complex conditions, that outline can be drawn through extreme rough terrain, including lakes, cliffs, industrial facilities, and grounded installations to test for generally unknown sub-surface features of potential interest.As more is learned about the larger-scale signatures of ore settings and the district-scale geo-electric imprint of hydrothermal processes on lithology, it appears that the only thing certain about ore signatures is their uncertainty. This is not bad news. New opportunities abound as the advanced 3-D technology allows a first effective look at the previously unexplorable rough terrain or complicated settings, and a second look at areas where older results may now be known to be non-definitive."

A property based dynamic model of flotation was built and validated for training purposes. The model is based on the work of the AMIRA P9 project. The recovery of each particle with composition and size is calculated in a given simulation step. The model takes into account machine and operational parameters such as air flowrate and froth height. The model was created using fullscale test data on Pyhlisalmi Cu-Zn-pyrite ore with flotation kinetics of multiphase particles determined. Simulation and validation shows that model can predict the dynamic behavior of the process accurately enough for training purposes.

IN this paper we shall examine the Why, Where and How concerning the agglomeration of iron ores and concentrates. Fig. l answers the questions @f why there is so much interest at the present time in the art of agglomeration. The use of sinter or pellets in the blast furnace has materially increased their rated •capacity. ':'President Hains Company Ltd. Engineering J. S. McMahon ( 1) reports an increase from 653 tons of .pig iron per day to 1140 tons of pig iron per day with the use of a 100 per cent sinter burden on one of his blast furnaces. In the United States the use of 100 per cent pellets has increased pig iron production from approximately 1800 tons per day to over 3000 tons pig iron per day (2). In our economic system the general objective is to produce more and better commodities cheaper. Fig. 2 shows the decrease in coke consumption with increased tonnages from the furnaces when using -

The creep behavior of three AJ62 alloys was investigated in a wide range of stresses and temperatures. Multi-level tensile creep tests revealed a distinct primary creep stage and a high stress exponent up to a value of 10. The threshold stress concept which is commonly used in combination with high stress exponents was utilized in the analysis of creep behaviour. This resulted in an effective stress exponent for the AJ alloys indi¬cating dislocation climb as the dominating creep mechanism. In addition, microstructural observations of the lamellar eutectic and of the a-Mg-matrix were carried out using opti¬cal microscopy, SEM and TEM. The creep properties of the alloys are discussed in the context of microstructural parameters such as phase volume-fraction, stability and solute supersaturation.

The aim of this work was to prepare the metallic coatings on 316L stainless steel dental implant and evaluate the corrosion characteristics and thus the biocompatibility of the uncoated and metallic coated dental implants and comparison of the effect of the type of coatings on biocompatibility. Three types of metallic coatings including Tantalum, Niobium, and Titanium coatings were made using physical vapor deposition process on 316L stainless steel dental implant. Structural characterization techniques including; X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis were utilized to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coatings. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions at 37±1 °C in order to determine and compare the corrosion characteristics. All three types of metallic coatings had a positive effect on improvement of the corrosion behavior so that the coatings could increase the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel and this trend was independent to the type of physiological environment. Biocompatible metallic coatings could decrease the corrosion current density that is a distinct advantage for prevention of ion release. This can improve the biocompatibility of the implant and, consequently prevention of tissue damages, inflammation and irritation and obtained desirable histopathological response.

"A study of the physical properties of long grades of asbestos fibers imported into the United States during the past eight years has disclosed information that will contribute materially to effective selection and use of fibers for electrical products. The study embraced fiber lengths, volume resistivity under three different conditions, total iron by chemical analysis, magnetic rating, conductivity of an aqueous ex-tract and its sodium chloride equivalent.The fibers examined included chrysotiles from Rhodesia, British Columbia, and Barberton area; marlime from Bechuanaland and Province of Quebec; amosite and crocidolites from Africa and Australia; and anthophyllites from Mozambique and from Georgia in the United States. Volume resistivity values provide a relative basis for estimating the electrical performance of end products; magnetic rating -an estimate of the quantity of iron compounds present in excess of those in the asbestos structure; conductivity of an aqueous extract; and an estimate of the ionizable impurities in fibers.Tests of these factors yield in-formation, not heretofore generally known, which may serve as a guide in the evaluation of asbestos fibers for electrical products."

The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. "Equipment which may be remotely operated, has some degree of on-board intelligence, and which for periods of time may operate autonomously, is referred to as telerobotic. Recent advances in electronics, computers and hydraulic equipment have dramatically reduced the cost and simplified the process of converting standard industrial equipment to telerobotic control. The benefits of telerobotic equipment include improved safety by removing the operator from dangerous situations, reduced maintenance costs and increased productivity. This technology has been proven in various military, nuclear, and police applications.The surface mining industry has expressed an interest in automation and is characterized by a willingness to use remotely operated equipment, however, the majority of telerobotic equipment currently in use is experimental or prototypical. Potential applications of telerobotic equipment for surface mining include remote operation of equipment near dangerous high walls and other unsafe areas, utilization of robotic trucks for routine hauling operations, and control of jointed equipment. In addition, component technologies of telerobotic systems are relevant to various forms of condition monitoring, operator feedback systems, and vehicle positioning.Attention must now be directed toward resolving more complex problems associated with enhancing feedback to the operator, improving the man/machine interface, and ultimately, improving efficiency. Removal of the human operator from the work site introduces significant complications in replacing the sensory inputs that an operator normally uses to efficiently run his machinery. These can be difficult to define and even more difficult to replicate remotely and may include restrictions pertaining to vision, hearing, and touch.In cooperation with Defence Research Establishment Suffield and the Alberta Research Council, Robotech Industries Ltd. is pursuing the development of additional technologies to further enhance an operator’s ability to control remote telerobotic equipment. These developments include a head-mounted display, additional control station displays and improvements to coordinated motion control software. Prototypes of these developments are expected to be completed and tested by the fourth quarter of 1997."

"In this work the dissolution, precipitation and adsorption behaviour of gold in acidic iron sulphate media containing small amounts of chloride ions is investigated via batch laboratory tests and OLI thermodynamic calculations over the temperature range 25-250°C. Chloride ions may be present in industrial pressure oxidation/pressure leaching (POX/PL) operations due to elevated water salinity levels or due to intentional addition as is the case of the CESL Copper Pressure Leaching Process. Thermodynamic calculations show that AuCl4 - may form depending on the free Cl-/Au ratio and temperature, its stability increasing with increasing Cl- concentration and decreasing with increasing temperature. On the other hand during POX/PL, we know that massive precipitation of iron in various hydrolysis products and compounds occurs. Hence of interest is the question how AuCl4 - that may form during leaching interacts with the iron precipitation products. Gold(III) chloride was found to co-precipitate with iron(III) (oxy) hydroxides and arsenates forming in the autoclave but not with natrojarosite. Upon further investigation it was discovered that activated carbon added in the autoclave (as done in CIL) acts as preferential sink for the mobilized gold, hence opening the potential for the development of a direct cyanide-free gold recovery process in acidic sulphate leach reactors.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of gold from ores and concentrates has evolved over the years with processing routes becoming increasingly complex. Given the high value of gold, any reduction in losses during recovery operations constitutes an important economic benefit. One such loss that needs to be addressed is the potential solubilisation of gold during pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory sulphidic gold feedstocks. For example, Agnico Eagle Mines reported a loss in gold recovery due to the formation of a gold chloride complex (Garofalo, 2009). Gold is known to form complexes in solution, such as gold(III) chloride, if an excess of chloride ions are present. The fate of such soluble gold chloride during pressure oxidation and the subsequent neutralization of the acidic discharge slurry will determine if gold is lost or recovered in the downstream cyanidation operation. Thus it is of interest to know under what conditions gold chloride may stay soluble or co-precipitate along primary (formed in the autoclave) or secondary (formed during neutralization) precipitates. Furthermore, the mode of co-precipitated gold, such as adsorption on iron compounds, like goethite and hematite (Machesky et al., 1990; Nachayev, 1984); substitution in one of the precipitated phases; or finally chemical reduction to metallic state would have consequences in terms of gold recovery."

"Acid resistant brick lined autoclaves and related vessels are utilized in pressure oxidation for the recovery of gold, copper, and other metals. The combination of the corrosion resistant membrane, acid resistant brick, mortar and steel shell is a composite system that requires a sophisticated stress analysis. In order to obtain meaningful results both the model and physical properties of the materials must be carefully selected. Evaluation of the calculated results requires an understanding of both the failure mechanisms of ceramics and experience with the performance of existing lining systems.INTRODUCTIONAcid brick lining systems are used in pressure oxidation autoclaves and related vessels to provide thermal and mechanical protection for corrosion resistant membranes that are applied directly to the interior of the vessel shell. The acid brick and mortar must be resistant to the process conditions and must provide a mechanically reliable structure.The construction of lined vessels incorporates a wide range of materials that can include the carbon steel vessel, austenitic weld overlay, lead lining, organic membrane, ceramic brick, mortars and other alloy components. The physical properties of the materials can vary by orders of magnitude and when combined in the construction of the lined vessel create a complex composite structure. The materials may be bonded together or act independently of each other. Stresses are induced into the lined vessel include pressure, thermal expansion, chemical expansion and mechanical loads.The complexity of these systems makes it is very difficult to account for all of the variables in the structural analysis of lined vessels. Historically calculations were simplified and designers primarily relied on experience with previous applications.The greatly improved tools for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) available today allow for detailed calculation of the stresses imposed on the vessel shell and lining. Koning & Lauzon (2004) presented a paper on design fundamentals including a discussion on the application of FEA methods at Pressure Hydrometallurgy 2004 in Banff. When a designer carefully constructs a model and selects the correct materials properties for the calculations, meaningful and useful results can be achieved."

CESL has developed a proprietary hydrometallurgical process for base metal concentrates, notably those of copper and nickel. The process is based on pressure oxidation (PO) of the sulphide minerals, which is done at elevated temperatures in mixed sulphate-chloride liquor at about pH 2 ? 3. The process achieves maximum oxidation of the metals whilst minimizing sulphur oxidation to sulphate. Almost all base metal sulphide minerals are efficiently treated under these conditions. In the case of copper minerals, pressure oxidation does not generally put the copper into solution, because of the relatively high pH prevailing in this process. Therefore, PO is followed by an acidic leaching stage, which specifically aims at maximum copper dissolution with minimal leaching of iron. The overall copper recovery is largely determined by the efficiency of this stage. The process has low capital and operating costs, partly because there is minimal use of acid or neutralizing agents for iron dissolution or precipitation, respectively; this is achieved by minimizing iron leaching during both the oxidation and leaching stages. Iron sulphides in the feed concentrate deport almost entirely to the solid leach residue as hematite, which has superior handling characteristics for filtering and washing. Iron minerals play a key role in the process, with pyrrhotite and pyrite having very different responses to the oxidation process. Acid management for the whole process is affected by the iron mineralogy, and the flowsheet is therefore tuned to the specific concentrate.
