"IN APRIL, 1965, the employee relations department (then called the personnel department) was established as a separate function within the company. Its aims and objectives were to hire an effective work force to operate the open-pit mine and the mill, which were at that time under development and construction. It was also directed to develop a sound policy for employee relations to assist the company in maintaining a stable and properly motivated work force, which included the establishment of satisfactory wage rates and fringe benefits, safety, fire protection and security. During the 8 years that the department has been in existence the scope of the company's operations has expanded to include a zinc plant and an underground mine. The work force has enlarged accordingly and now totals 1,680 employees working at the two sites, separated by 34 road miles. To cover the employee relations functions the department has a total of 29 members at the two sites. The department is organized under a superintendent, who has an employee relations supervisor, a safety director and a fire chief reporting directly to him. The employee relations supervisor, with 2 employment officers and 2 clerks, handles hiring, first-stage employee grievanoos, terminations, employee records, and the organization of company-sponsored functions and meetings. Safety, training and security are the responsibility of the safety director, who has 3 safety supervisors, 16 security men, 1 first-aid attendant and one hearing conservation technician to service the two sites. "Behaviour of rebar bolts subjected to combined shear and bending in underground potash mining applications is not well understood. An experimental investigation compared load applied to resin-grouted No. 25 metric rebar to theoretical load, calculated using elastic bending theory. Distributed optical sensing (fibre optic) technology allowed axial strain measurements at 1.25 mm increments along the length of rebar. Experimental procedure, data processing methods, and equipment improvements are needed for field applications of optical sensing technology. "Nickel powder can be produced by the reduction of a nickel ammine complex solution by hydrogen at high temperature and pressure. To minimize the deposition of fine nickel on the surface of the reactor and other equipment, seed crystals are added to the initial solution to promote nucleation of the nickel powder. Such seed crystals catalyze the precipitation of the nickel particles on the surface of the seed and enhance grain growth. In this study, nickel nuclei were precipitated by the addition of a polymer to the nickel ammine complex solution, resulting in the production of nickel powder. Thus, we herein propose a model that explains the effect of the polymer in the precipitation of nickel nuclei.INTRODUCTIONNickel powder is commonly produced via a hydrometallurgical process from the hydrogen reduction of a solution containing a nickel ammine complex at high temperatures and pressures, and this process was commercialized in the 1950s by Sherritt Gordon (Sherritt International, Canada, Benson & Colvin,1973; The Staff, Research and Development Division, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd., 1958).In the above transformation, upon the injection of hydrogen gas into the solution, nickel is reduced as outlined in Equation(1), ultimately resulting in the production of nickel powder.Ni(NH3)nSO4+ H2?Ni+ (NH4)2SO4+ (n-2)NH3(n:2–6)(1)In this process, seed crystals are added to the reactor to suppress the precipitation of fine nickel (scaling) and to enhance nickel reduction (Benson & Colvin, 1973; Mackiw, Lin & Kunda, 1957). More specifically, iron sulfate and a small amount of dispersant polymer are added, which leads to the formation of nuclei. Upon subsequent hydrogen reduction, the reduced nickel can then be deposited on the nuclei, allowing nickel particle growth to take place. However, this results in iron contamination in the final nickel product, and so the use of pure nickel as a seed crystal is desirable to produce high quality nickel powders."

The high elevation of China Western Mining Company (WMC)' s Ganhe refinery, and the high iron content of concentrates produced by the WMC mines, were key factors in the selection of pressure leaching by WMC for their new zinc refinery. This paper describes the results of pressure leaching test work conducted by Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan with a sample of WMC concentrate from Qinghai Province in China. Results from batch pressure leach tests and a four-day pilot plant campaign are reported. The pilot plant campaign included continuous operation of a two-stage pressure leach circuit, as well as neutralization and iron removal steps, resulting in the production of iron-free zinc sulphate solution. Greater than 98% zinc extraction was achieved in pressure leaching, while producing solution containing about 9 g/L H2SO4 and 2 g/L Fe. Following neutralization and iron removal, the solution contained about 170 g/L Zn and less than 10 mg/L Fe. Overall recovery of sulphur in the zinc concentrate feed to elemental sulphur byproduct was about 85%, while 75 to 80% of the indium in the feed was recoverable from the neutralization residue. The test results highlighted the technical and economic advantages offered by the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process and provided the required data for the engineering design.

In the automotive industry, the awareness to meet Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) standards has evolved the need to reduce vehicular weight in new automobile designs, with the overall goal of reducing gas emissions into the atmosphere (Kyoto protocol), One efficient method has been to use lighter materials such as aluminum in outer body panels, Heat treatable AA6111 is one of the materials employed due to its unique combination of formability, paint bake strengthening and superior corrosion resistance characteristics, Researchers have applied various thermo-mechanical processes on 6000 series aluminum alloys and have found an improvement in the mechanical properties of these alloys, For a formed and painted automobile panel, the final mechanical properties involve a combination of strength components arising from cold work, strain aging and precipitation minus recovery. In this study, the evolution of microstructure resulting from the interaction of cold work and precipitation in AA6111 has been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after subjecting samples to various heat treatments, tensile testing and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), This has been done to understand the evolution of microstructure and its influence on the properties of the alloy, The results show a considerable improvement in strength with a corresponding increase in strengthening precipitates with increasing level of cold work in the alloy. DSC results following the application of various levels of cold work also show acceleration in the precipitate phase formation, as precipitates are observed to form at lower temperatures, with increasing level of cold work/

"Waste rock is one of the most abundant materials at mine sites and must be properly characterized and managed to limit acid rock drainage and other harmful byproducts. An experimental waste rock pile—part of the test piles research program—located at the Diavik diamond mine (Northwest Territories, Canada) was deconstructed and sampled to study the spatial variability of material properties. Bulk samples were classified based on the amount of material finer than 4.75 mm. Hydraulic properties of each sample were estimated and particle size distribution analysis was completed. The large volume of material and the large size of particles make it difficult to collect representative samples. Sampling techniques are often dis-ruptive to mining operations because they alter the structure of the waste rock pile or interfere with mine traffic. The convention at most mine sites to collect little to no information on waste rock material means that models and predictions of how waste material will behave and interact with the surrounding environment are based on general information that might not be site specific. This could lead to environmental damage or higher costs if environmental effects are underestimated during the construction of waste rock structures."

Pipelines are subject to multiple threats often requiring quantification of pipeline risk and engineering evaluation of in-line inspection and other data to effect discovery of conditions defined by the regulation. Public concern and pressure from regulatory bodies are accelerating the need for pipeline operators to formalize and intensify their approach to integrity management. Most operators need a phased approach to progressively adopt the most relevant and needed assessments. The organized and relevant assessment steps need to be introduced according to data available and maturity of the integrity management program. Each refinement to the quantification offers distinct advantages to the user. In this paper, the progressive integrity assessment solutions using quantitative methods are presented. Methodologies for engineering evaluation of integrity in-line inspection data for immediate and future integrity are summarized. Corrosion is used as an example, but the approach is applicable to any time-dependent defect based hazard. Strategies for pipeline integrity management are discussed.

"Along the process of defining the fundamentals of a ferronickel project, several questions require proper answers from the very beginning such as the size and characteristics of the laterite deposit (oxide or silicate), the mineralogical variability, and the selection of the most valuable process route. In general, these elements will be defined along the progress of the exploration and feasibility studies, and definitive engineering. Also, from the very preliminary estimates, three questions are very common: what should be the plant capacity (annual tonnes of contained nickel), what will be the probable capital required (CAPEX), and what will be the estimated timeline (schedule) between the initial stage, say the feasibility study and the plant start-up and ramp-up to designed capacity. The accuracy of the capital cost estimates also progresses along the different stages of development from ±50% at the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) stage down to ±5% for the Detailed Engineering and Construction stage. These accuracies of estimates have been, in some ways, accepted by the mining community and investors. The industry accepted benchmark for ferronickel projects in terms of CAPEX are then in the order of US$50,000 per tonne of nickel contained in the FeNi product. In this paper, the authors analyze in some details three ferronickel projects for lateritic ores that have selected the Rotary Kiln - Electric Furnace (RKEF) as the suitable technological route and have started production in the period 2006–2016. Some key aspects of the ferronickel projects are examined: 1) size and type of deposit; 2) flowsheet selection; 3) evolution of capital cost as a function of capacity from the feasibility stage to construction; 4) comparison between planned production scale and actual ramp up; 5) estimated capital expenditure (CAPEX) compared with actual figures; 6) nickel price evolution and timing of the approval for the project to proceed to construction and production start-up. The objective of this paper is to identify key elements that should be addressed in future projects and that are proposed as benchmark figures for similar projects."

The Sepon process plant utilises an autoclave to oxidize a flotation concentrate containing pyrite, residual copper minerals, and sulphur. The concentrate is produced from the residue of a preceding atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The function of the autoclave is to provide iron and acid for that atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The key issues in the operation of the autoclave are to maximise the production of acid and ferric ions and to avoid scaling issues related to sulphur balling in the autoclave. Scale control in the autoclave was examined using various dispersants and residue recycle without success. Operation of the autoclave at high temperature and high acidity addressed the scale issue through rapid oxidation of the sulphur and produced a ferric sulphate precipitate in the residue that could be re-leached to provide ferric iron. This paper presents the development steps followed, through batch and continuous piloting that resulted in an autoclave circuit design that addressed the above process requirements. Following definition of the process design basis, modelling of the autoclave operation was carried out to assist with engineering design. The model included thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of pyrite, elemental sulphur and covellite and also considered gas/liquid mixing, oxygen solubility as a function of temperature and solution composition, ferrous to ferric oxidation, gangue reactions with acid and precipitation/re-dissolution of basic ferric sulphate and alunite.

HOLLINGER mining operations have required development by 24 vertical shafts having a total length of 28,160 feet. Seventeen of these are sunk from surface and seven are interior shafts. Four surface shafts and three interior shafts are now active and, excepting the recently completed new main ore-hoisting shaft, the remainder are either abandoned, or are used for passes or for ventilation. The new shaft bottoms 60 feet below the 3,050 level, but there is much work to be done before it is placed in service. The term 'shaft practice' is intended to include shaft construction and a general treatment o typical equipment. It is a large subject for an organization the size of Hollinger and this paper is intended only to present the salient features. The uranium deposits discovered by Amok (Canada) Ltd. in the Cluff Lake area of north western Saskatchewan occur at or near the southern edge of the uplifted basement core of the Carswell circular structure. Two types of mineralization, distinguishable, by their geological and structural setting and mineral paragenesis, have been recognized. The N-Claude type is characterized by a relatively simple mineral assemblage, consisting of uraninite or pitchblende with coffinite, and is accompanied by variable amounts of graphite and organic matter, and Fe, Cu, Pb and Mo sulphides. Both N and Claude orebodies occur within quartzofeldspathic gneisses of the basement core. On the other hand, the D-type ore has a complex mineral assemblage consisting of: uraninite, pitchblende, thucholite and coffinite, along with native gold and selenium; gold tellurides, and selenides of Pb, Bi, Ni and Co; sulphides of Fe, Cu and Pb; and organic matter. The D orebody occurs within carbonaceous shales at the base of the Athabasca Formation as well as in fault zones in regolithic quartzo feldspathic gneisses above the inverted unconformity. An age of 1050 m.y., which is consistent with a period (circa 1200-1000 m.y.) of widespread hydrothermal activity and uranium mineralization or reworking within and adjacent to the Athabasca Basin, has been obtained from uranium mineralization from the D orebody. Later reworking (circa470 m.y.) of the mineralization occurred at the intersection of older mineralized shear zones with radial faults produced during meteorite impact.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, Vale Inco Limited processes a bulk copper-nickel concentrate in two Inco oxygen flash furnaces. Coke supplies a minor proportion of the process heat requirements, limiting the flash furnace matte grade to the target 45% CuNiCo. Coke addition to the furnace offers a potential means of establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. Such a practice would be conducive to producing sulfur deficient (partially metallized) matte. At the same iron content, the iron activity of sulfur deficient matte is higher than that of regular matte. A supernatant coke barrier could, therefore, be expected to lead to higher nickel and cobalt recoveries, reduction or even elimination of magnetite furnace bottom build-up and increased sulfur elimination as SO2 in the flash furnace. Extensive experiments were conducted in a miniplant flash furnace to investigate the effect on process metallurgy of the suggested modified scheme. The introduction and description of the experimental set up were given in Part 1 of this paper and an early paper published in Yazawa symposium1 together with the results and some in depth discussion on metallurgy. This paper intends to discuss the kinetics of the miniplant flash furnace testwork.

Industrial clays, including a variety of bentonites and kaolinbased clays in southern Saskatchewan are hosted by Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary sediments. Ofparticular significance are the deposits of swelling bentonite in the Cretaceous Bearpaw Formation and the kaolinitic clays of the Cretaceous Whitemud and Paleocene Ravenscrag Formations. Swelling bentonite is currently produced in the Wilcox-Truax area by Canadian Clay Products Inc. and yields at least seven different commercial products for a variety of applications. Kaolinitic plastic clays, including ball clay, stoneware and earthenware clay, as well as kaolin in southern Saskatchewan, have a long history of development and use. Products include common and face brick, refractory bricks and other shapes, chinaware, pottery, sewer pipe, chimney flue linings and tiles. Currently clay production is for out-of-province brick manufacturing and for pottery. Recent research and improved technology combined with expansion in certain areas of the global clay industry generally hold promise for a resurgence of a clay-based industry in Saskatchewan. Products of particular promise include: clay tiles; kaolin fillers and extenders; and aluminum as well as related by-products from kaolinitic clays based on the carbochlorination process.

In 1913, potash mineralization was recognized at a depth of over 7,000 feet in an oil-well hole (Norcanol's Radville No. 1 well) drilled near the town of Raddlle, Saskatchewan. Although, at this depth, potash is not considered mineable by conventional underground mining methods, this discovery shed the first light on the potash deposits of Saskatchewan in much the same manner as oil-well drilling was responsible for the first discovery of potash in the Carlsbad Basin of New Mexico in 19:25. The discovery near Radville alerted the oil-well geologists and, as a result potash mineralization was recognized in the Verbata No. 2 well, near Unity, Saskatchewan, in 1946. The mineralization, which was at a depth ?of 3,466 feet, graded more than 20 per cent K20 over a thickness of eleven feet. Elemental sulfur was stockpiled at the Mount Polley Mine for use as a source of sulfuric acid as part of research into leaching copper from oxide ores, but the project did not proceed beyond an initial pilot- scale evaluation. Since placement, the sulfur has oxidized and some sulfuric acid leached into the underlying rock. The reaction of the acid with these underlying materials has been studied as part of an evaluation of the effects of leachate from the pile. The rock underneath the sulfur pile is composed dominantly of primary and secondary alumino-silicates with less than 1% carbonate (calcite) and iron sulfide (pyrite). In its unaltered condition, the rock is classified as non-acid generating. Conceptually, it was expected the sulfuric acid would be neutralized by the rock to varying degrees resulting in a series of pH-controlled weathering fronts progressing from leached near the contact with the sulfur pile (pH <3), to active neutralization by silicates (pH 4–5), to active neutralization by carbonates (pH >7). The rocks underneath the pile were sampled to determine the extent to which the rocks had reacted and their long-term stability after removal of the acid source. INTRODUCTION When rock is blasted and excavated to facilitate mining ore, it is typically placed and stored on the surface in piles. The resulting drainage may have a neutral to basic pH (i.e., non-acidic drainage) or a low pH (i.e., acid rock drainage, ARD) depending on the mineralogy of the rock being stored in the piles. Acid- base accounting (ABA) can be used to characterise the two types of rock: potentially acidic drainage generating (PAG) and not potentially acidic drainage generating (NAG) (Price, 2009). According to Price (2009), NAG is defined as having an excess of neutralization potential (NP) in the rock in the form of calcium carbonate-like minerals when compared to acid potential (AP), i.e., a Neutralization Potential Ratio (NP/AP = NPR) greater than 2.0, whereas PAG is classified as having an excess of AP (i.e., an NPR less than 1.0). This is a conservative estimate and may be slightly modified depending on the mineralogy at specific mine sites. Rock with an NPR of 1–2 is also capable of generating acid (Price, 2009) and, depending on the mineralogy, may also be classified as PAG. Drainage from PAG material can generate acid immediately, or many years after it has been exposed to surface conditions. Disposal techniques depend on the category (i.e., NAG or PAG) and reactivity of the rock stored in the piles.

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

Abstract - The Croft diorite in central England belongs to a suite of Caledonian igneous rocks collectively known as the South Leicestershire diorite complex. Although the intrusions occupy separate outcrops, they are linked at depth to form a single pluton, buried beneath a cover of Triassic sediments (Le Bas, 1972; 1982, Allsop and Arthur, 1983). Both the Caledonian diorites and the overlying sub-Triassic unconformity have been affected by a complex history of alteration and mineralization which can be subdivided into four stages: (1) deuteric effects, caused by the release of volatiles during magmatic cooling; (2) albitization through sodic enrichment; (3) formation of lowtemperature laumontite, analcime and calcite veins with associated wall-rock alteration to prehnite and pumpellyite; and (4) sub-Triassic unconformity-hosted base metal, manganese and palygorskite mineralization. Zeolite mineralization occured some 200 Ma later than the intrusion itself, during post-Triassic times, as indicated by the presence of a single vein of laumontite and microcrystalline calcite which cross-cuts the sub-Triassic unconformity surface and enters the overlying Triassic sediments. Evidence from fluid inclusion work indicates that two fluids were involved in the deposition of the zeolite veins. One fluid was initially of relatively high temperature (~100°C to 320°C) and low salinity (~0.2 to 5.9 wt% NaCl equiv.), and was probably meteoric in origin, whereas the other was of relatively low temperature (~41°C to 165°C) and high salinity (~0.4 to 16.72 wt% NaCl equiv.), and is interpreted to represent a basinal brine. During Triassic rifting, thinning and fracturing of the crust, with the possible rise of associated magmas (Halliday and Mitchell, 1984), could have increased permeability and heat flow, initiating the circulation of hydrothermal fluids. Triassic unconformity-hosted base-metal mineralization in Central England is similar to other Triassic-Jurassic mineralization in Europe (Mitchell and Halliday, 1976).

Although the intrusions occupy separate outcrops, they are linked at depth to form a single pluton, buried beneath a cover of Triassic sediments (Le Bas, 1972; 1982, Allsop and Arthur, 1983). Both the Caledonian diorites and the over-lying sub-Triassic unconformity have been affected by a complex history of alteration and mineralization which can be subdivided into four stages: (1) deuteric effects, caused by the release ofvolatiles during magmatic cooling; (2) albitization through sodic enrichment; (3) formation of low-temperature laumontite, analcime and calcite veins with associated wall-rock alteration to prehniteand pumpellyite; and (4) sub-Triassic unconformity-hosted base metal, manganese and palygorskite mineralization. Zeolite mineralization occured some 200 Ma later than the intrusion itself, duringpost-Triassic times, as indicated by the presence of a single vein of laumontite and microcrystallinecalcite which cross-cuts the sub-Triassic unconformity surface and enters the overlying Triassic sediments. Evidence from ?uid inclusion work indicates that two ?uids were involved in the deposition of the zeolite veins. One ?uid was initially of relatively high temperature (~100°C to 320°C) and lowsalinity (~0.2 to 5.9 wt% NaCl equiv.), and was probably meteoric in origin, whereas the other wasof relatively low temperature (~41°C to 165°C) and high salinity (~0.4 to 16.72 wt% NaCl equiv.),and is interpreted to represent a basinal brine. During Triassic rifting, thinning and fracturing of the crust, with the possible rise of associated magmas (Halliday and Mitchell, 1984), could have increased permeability and heat ?ow, initiating the circulation of hydrothermal ?uids. Triassic unconformity-hosted base-metal mineralization in Central England is similar to other Triassic-Juras-sic mineralization in Europe (Mitchell and Halliday, 1976).

On the basis of research of relations among the market participants the analytical model has been created which connects the price of industrial good at stock exchange with volume of sales and the stock of the sellers and buyers, Also a model was developed for assessment of these parameters of the market status by the actually fixed stock exchange and general market indicators. The composition of these models made it possible to create reliable system of short-term price forecasting for commodities or base metals up to one quarter ahead. Imperfectability of creation a model for reliable price forecasting by purely statistic methods (by the "black box" principle) was shown. A model of price behavior qualitative forecasting till one quarter ahead has been developed, which determines the probability of reaching in future of the given level as well as of the price maximums and minimums, Optimal values of threshold probability were determined for forecasting the future price maximums and minimums securing the maximum profit from the forecasting system application for commercial activity. The developed system of forecasting was identified for primary aluminium at the period of 1990-2003. The system was tested daily during 20 months period for speculations on 3M primary aluminium forwards at London Metal Exchange with high commercial result.
