Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Since 1954, much drilling, mapping, and quarrying has been done but there is no published report of this work.The rocks which constitute the Middleback Range, Camel Hill-Cooyerdoo line, Katunga Hill-Iron Knob, and Ash Range (Fig. 1) belong to the Middleback Group of Middle Precambrian or late Archaean age. It is difficult, and probably inadvisable, to frame rigid rules for the valuation of alluvial deposits, for such deposits are very diverse in type, varying, for example, according to the mineral sought and according'to the complexity of the deposit which, on one hand, may be a narrow welldefined alluvial strip at the bottom of which is a continuous mineral lead, or, on the other, may be a broad alluvial flat with discontinuous patches of the valuable mineral occurring at different levels throughout the alluvium.However, some definite procedure in valuation must be adopted when dealing with anyone deposit, and the fundamentals of such a procedure are applicable to almost all alluvial deposits.The methods described in this paper are based very largely on the valuation of a specific deposit and, although an attempt has been made to keep the discussion as general as possible, it contains some statements which, if traced to their origin, spring from the writer's association with that deposit. Such statements must be interpreted with sufficient flexibility to be appropriate to whatever area the reader may have in mind.The subject of valuing an alluvial deposit falls naturally into two divisions: The valuation of each borehole; the valuation of the deposit as a whole. The following discussion is therefore dealt with under these two headings.Some general matters are mentioned in a third section.

A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330 lb/sq. in. tension to 3,750 lb/sq. in. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock model mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a borehole extensometer and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face was advanced the roof movement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The majority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a radioactive isotope and a scintillation counter in a pair of parallel boreholes is a sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of strata stresses is required to understand the deformation of an underground opening and, in particular, the roof behaviour. It is the aim of investigations currently being conducted by Australian Coal Association (Research) Ltd. to determine the stress existing around mine openings and the location and magnitude of roof movement.STRATA PRESSURE MEASUREMENTMost measurements of strata stress are performed at the surface of underground openings and the majority measure the change of strain resulting from stress relief. The accuracy of the measured value of stress depends upon knowledge of the rock modulus of elasticity. The flat jack method has the advantage that strain relief is restored by a measured stress applied directly by the jack. The rock modulus of elasticity can also be determined.

Detailed mineralogical investigation of a tailing sample from the Juno plant circuit at Tennant Creek was carried out to determine the nature of the unrecovered bismuth and whether any possibility existed for improving bismuth recovery. The investigation showed that the Ibismuth was present in a complex mixture of Bi-Pb-Ou-Se-S minerals (termed "bismuthinite"), of which about 74 per cent was locked (mainly with magnetite) and 26 per cent was liberated (18 per cent in the minus 7 µm slime). The results suggested that attention should be directed to both finer grinding and improved flotation of slime "bismuthinite", and testwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of these recommendations led to a significant improvement in bismuth recovery.Detailed mineralogical investigation of two Juno concentrates was carried out to determine the nature of the selenium present and whether any possibility existed for improving the selenium grade. The investigation indicated that virtqally all the bismuth, selenium, and lead was present in "bismuthinite", which showed a composition range of 32-82 per cent Bi, 0-42 per cent Pb, 0-24 per cent Se, and 5-18 per cent S. Differences in the Bi/Se ratios of the two concentrates could be attributed to different average Bi/Se ratios of the constituent "bismuthinite", and the relatively low selenium grade of the "bismuthinite" precluded the possibility of obtaining a high grade selenium concentrate with high selenium recovery.However, differential flotation and/or low intensity magnetic separation to remove chakopyrite, and magnetite, the main diluents of the concentrate, could be expected to upgrade the selenium content byup to 80 per cent (relative) and .festwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of the recommendations of the mineralogical investigation confirmed that depression of chalcopyrite in the flotation circuit could produce significantly improved selenium grades.These investigations illustrate the application of mineralogy to the practical problems of improving plant performance. Mineralogy has an important role to play in providing quantitative data on which the metallurgist can evaluate plant performance and base a programme of metallurgical testwork, and early mineralogical investigation of feeds, concentrates, middlings, and tailings can lead to the avoidance of much abortive and expensive metallurgical testwork.

Reliable and discriminating small, laboratory scale methods of study have been developed and used successfully in the critical evaluation and interpretation of the carbonization characteristics of a wide range of raw and prepared materials, the variable factors in the coking process, and' the mechanical properties of the carbonized products. The simple and highly economic technologies have been successfully and effectively integrated with detailed surface and subsurface geological exploration programmes (particularly in the coalfields of the .Central Bowen Basin of Queensland) as well as with quality and utilization studies of a nUII!ber of representative Australian and Japanese coals. Previously, only the results of comparatively large, laboratory scale studies have provided information reasonably indicative of those to be anticipated hi industrial practice, but these suffer serious disadvantages in terms of economy of material, time and resources; they have been difficult or even impossible to use as an essential part of any normal or comprehensive exploration programme. On the other hand, although previously developed smaller scale laboratory methods derive considerable advantage from their flexibility, amenity to critical control and inherent potential for speed and economy, they have hitherto permitted no effective or direct comparison with the results of industrial practice or full scale assessment. Comprehensive study results achieved through technologies developed recently at the University 'of Sydney demonstrate that carefully controlled small laboratory scale methods of evaluation quite suitable for use in exploration and, other programmes may be used to predict with considerable accuracy and reliability (in some cases exceedingthat of pilot scale study) the principal strength index of one of the established and internationally recognized full sc:ale tests-the Japanese Industrial-Standard Drum Test. It is probable that further study may establish satisfactory correlations with the results of other standard industrial procedures.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

As high grade ore deposits are depleted, remaining deposits are generally lower grade and require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. These low grade deposits often contain a large proportion of barren gangue. Pre-concentration aims to remove this barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible. This has the potential to reduce processing costs, energy and water consumption, increase production and improve resource utilisation.There are several technologies that may be applicable for pre-concentration. This paper looks specifically at bulk ore sorting and how it can be integrated into existing or new mining operations to improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Bulk ore sorting is the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor measurement. It may be used to increase the production rate through fixed plant capacity, or increase production and/or reduce the size of downstream processing equipment in Greenfield operations. Marginal ore sub-economic reserves may be upgraded, making them economic to treat and improving the resource utilization. Bulk ore sorting could also be used to reduce dilution and ore loss in mining operations by improving grade control, or to separate ore types to treat via different process routes. Various applications of bulk ore sorting are discussed in this paper, and three cases are investigated considering the impact on the overall operation and the associated benefits.CITATION:Duffy, K, Valery, W, Jankovic, A and Holtham, P, 2015. The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. Pressure drops were measured in a column packed with glass spheres and wax particles, both in random and preferential distributions. Variables investigated included wax content, gas flow rates, and temperatures.It is shown that for random distribution of wax, pressure drop is exponentially related to wax content above the melting point of wax and that below this it increases with increasing gas rate and temperature.For preferred distribution of wax the highest increase in pressure drop is obtained with horizontal distribution of wax and the least with vertical distribution.Comparison with operating blast furnace data and application of results to practice are also included.

The lead concentration of flotation feed ore slurries is determined using two ?-ray absorption gauges mounted directly on a 6 in. diameter flotation feed pipeline. One gauge is a conventional "density" gauge using CS137. The other is a "lead-sensitive" gauge, which depends on the preferential absorption. by lead of 225 key y-rays resulting from Compton backscatter of CS137 y-rays.Gauge outputs are combined using an analogue computer the output signal of which is directly proportional to the lead concentration of the pulp. The accuracy of measurement of the pulp lead concentration is ± 3·6 per cent for ore slurries with lead concentrations in the range 0'07-0·16 g/c.c. and pulp densities 1.43-1.60 g/c.c.This paper sets out the development of the technique and details are given of the two experiments (1964, 1966) conducted in the plant at North Broken Hill Limited. The installation of the two-gauge system inthe plant during May 1968 is described. Details are given of the calibration technique used and the results obtained.

Experimental investigations were made into the decoppering of lead, tin, and bismuth using a technique which approximates on the small scale to industrial practice.Decoppering lead with sulphur alone in the absence of tin and silver did not proceed to low copper values. With a minimum of 0·02 per cent Ag or 0·10 per cent Sn, lead was decoppered to less than 0·01 per cent Cuby stirring with 0·2 per cent S over 10 min. Decoppering of tin or bismuth proceeded rapidly to very low levels in the absence of any "catalytic" impurities, at any rate in excess of those concentrations normally encountered in commercially pure tin or bismuth.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

There are no large rivers in Western Australia capable of supplying water for processing magnetite ores. If sea water is used there are severe corrosion issues and the requirement to wash the concentrates with potable water. If groundwater is used there is a need to treat the water and sustainability is an issue for large projects because of potential drawdown of the aquifer.If sea water is desalinated the cost of the water is high because of the power requirement. At the same time the necessity to conserve water has lead to flow sheets where all of the tailings have to be filtered to minimise the water requirement.Managing the various water qualities and optimising water recovery and quality has resulted in optimising the water balance and issues meeting environmental obligations. Reverse flotation is a critical final step in reducing the silica level in the final concentrate and requires good quality water.

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of copper cementation with zinc in sulphate solution. For copper concentrations of the order of 10 p.p.m., a porous, adherent deposit is formed on the zinc surface and this has a significant influence on the reaction rate. When the specific mass of deposit is less than about O· 35 mg/cm2 the surface may be considered as smooth and the rate is described by simple convective counter diffusion of zinc and copper ions through a laminar diffusion boundary layer to the deposit-solution interface. In the presence of additional deposit, the diffusional mass transfer rate is increased by increased surface roughness.The rate under these conditions is first order, with the degree of enhancement independent of further increases in the specific deposit mass. The enhancement in rateis, however, directly related to the initial mass flux and the species involved in the reaction.Preliminary work showed the same mechanism to apply to cementation from chloride solution, solutions of high zinc concentration, and cementation of copper with iron..

Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...

As a result a great deal of information on equipment for the recovery of alluvial gold has been obtained. This paper is a review of the information with the aim of making relevant data available in New Zealand.

Various influences determine how an Environmental Management System (EMS) for a mining or petroleum project is developed and administered. These influences include the environmental and resource legislation applying to the project, the culture of the organisation, the environmental sensitivity of the area, and the administrative policies of the regulatory agencies involved. While financial penalties and even imprisonment may be imposed for non-compliance with environmental legislation, there are other compelling reasons for the establishment of an effective EMS. If a company wishes to be considered by Governments for the grant of exploration or mining rights, it is important that it can demonstrate environmentally responsible operations at existing facilities. The development of an effective EMS requires commitment from the Board of the company and the issue of an Environmental Policy to empower all levels of the staff and workforce to achieve environmentally responsible operations. This must be supported by the provision of appropriate human and financial resources, and environmental training of staff at all levels from the Board to the mine site, workshop and office. A regular environmental auditing programme is essential to ensure that the EMS is in place and is effective in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and protection of the environment. An EMS can be developed on the basis of existing management systems, quality management systems, existing and emerging environmental management standards (such as BS7750 and ISOI4000), or sophisticated computerised systems which may incorporate international experience, standards, and codes of practice.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods.
