Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. Process engineering principles are used to analyse the features of leaching processes for large masses of low grade, unprocessed ore. Different performance characteristics are related to the numerous variants of these processes. The variant for which reagent enters a heap only via the input solution is further subdivided into three modes of operation. The three modes may occur in testwork and full-scale operations; the effects of process variables on the rate of the process are completely different in each mode. The mode can be identified by the time at which reagent first appears in the pregnant solution. It is related to the ratio of the height of the heap and the thickness of a band of ore in which the reactions are localised. Synthesis of the phenomena occurring within a heap via a computer program has produced a quantitative relation for the reaction band thickness. The program has been validated for several different systems. The overall achievement is that the mode of operation and the rate of the process can be forecast before column testwork is commenced. Some applications of the outcomes to testwork, process design and operational tactics are described.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy together with X-ray spectral microprobe analysis were used to investigate the structure and chemical composition of pathological calcified formations on the bioprostheses of heart valves. Controllable synthesis was carried out under the conditions (T = 37¦C, pH = 7.4) when the ion composition of the main elements (Ca, P, Mg and NaCl) is close to their concentrations in blood plasma. It is proposed on the basis of the obtained results that the formation of the hydroxyapatite of calcific inclusions on bioprostheses occurs as a result of spontaneous precipitation in the blood plasma. One of the factors determining the formation of massive calcified bodies on the bioprostheses of heart valves can be decreased magnesium concentration in blood.

The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

In order that the processes seen may be followed in their proper 'order, the subject will be dealt with as follows, (1) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines; (2) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines Smelting Works; (3) Broken Hill Mines; (4) Concentration at Broken Hill; (5) Smelting and refining of Lead, Silver, and Gold at Port Pirie. The first acquaintance with the copper region was made at the Yelta shaft and dressing mill of the Parramatta Copper Mines Co. at Moonta. The country rock at Moonta is a hard, tough, felsitic porphyry, the copper lodes having a general strike of N. 30° Kilipping from 500 to 70°. This necessitates shaft-sinking on the lode, and underlay shafts are the rule on the field. The ore is raised in the Yelta shaft in wheeled skips, and consists of ·chalcopyrite, bornite, pseudomorphic hematite, containing, in addition, molybdenite and tourmaline. The ore from the bins at the brace is passed over a grizzly; the over-size is hand-picked into smelting ore, concentrating ore, and waste rock (00 attle ), which is sent below for filling. The under-size is elevated to a trommel having in. holes. The over-size falls on to a picking belt made up of lengths of rope strapped with iron, working over wooden pulleys.

The 4 km long Huguenot Toll Tunnel in the Western Cape region of South Africa celebrated its tenth anniversary on 18 March 1998. At present a single (South) bore with bi-directional traffic flow is operational. The North bore was originally excavated but not lined and equipped.The tunnel is fitted with a semi-transverse ventilation system comprising 45/350 kW two speed fresh-air and 1 MW exhaust air fans at each of the portals. These provide ventilation through fresh and exhaust air ducts above the ceiling separated by movable partition doors. Secondary air ducts deliver air at low level. The fan control depends on the levels of CO pollution or visibility measured at six positions along the tunnel.The system performed well during initial tests and under conditions of low traffic volumes. As traffic volumes increased, and user complaints of bad air in the tunnel were received on several occasions, we realised that we had a problem. Tests confirmed that natural airflow within the tunnel induced by prevailing meteorological conditions outside the portals affected the performance of the ventilation system causing a plug of bad air to be trapped at varying positions along the operating tunnel.The control systems in the tunnel are presently being upgraded as described by Gray, Rieckert and Bullock (1998). As part of the retrofit we are implementing a new control strategy for the ventilation system which takes into account the external weather conditions. This paper discusses the 24 month long meteorological data gathering exercise, which is on-going, and explores the philosophies planned for controlling the ventilation system. The correlation between winds external to the tunnel and induced airflow inside the tunnel are examined. The effects of the weather induced airflow on the existing ventilation system are considered and proposals given for taking these effects into account in the new control strategy. These include the implementation of an expert system to predict ambient airflow from prevailing weather conditions, and the use of airflow measurements taken in the uncompleted North bore as a cross-check.The paper highlights the need to take cognisance of external weather conditions when designing tunnel ventilation systems.

The Rise & Shine Shear Zone is a shallow-dipping Cretaceous late metamorphic shear zone formed in a compressional environment. The Shotover mineralised system is dominated by normal faults with well-defined vein systems that cut across Miocene schist folds and faults related to the inception of the Alpine Fault. Despite the geological differences between these mineralisation systems, they share many common features of hydrothermal alteration that have resulted in disseminated gold in altered sheared schist. The most distinctive feature of both systems is the abundant ankeritic carbonate that has formed from decomposition of metamorphic chlorite. Excess iron from this alteration reaction combined with hydrothermal sulphur to form sulphides that host the disseminated gold. The chlorite decomposition reaction was reversed in the latter stages of both mineralisation systems, and this was accompanied by further gold emplacement in the Rise & Shine system.   Both alteration systems involved initial decomposition of metamorphic albite, followed by deposition of albite as a vein mineral in the latter stages. The fluid flow that yielded the disseminated gold was controlled by microshears that pervade host schists, in strong contrast to many Otago Schist vein systems where host rock alteration is absent. The ankeritic alteration in the Shotover and Rise & Shine mineralised systems has increased the volume of mineralised rock, and may have made suitable targets for large-tonnage, low grade gold deposits.

The Nanisivik Mine is located 750 km north of the Arctic Circle at the north end of Baffin Island in the Canadian High Arctic, and has been in production since 1976. The paper describes the regional and local geology and the current mining and mineral processing operations, including recent innovations in each area. The Nanisivik zinc-lead deposits comprise Mississippi Valley type sulphides in a block-faulted sediment sequence of Proterozoic age. The deposits formed in two mineralizing stages by replacement of the carbonate host rock. Exploration techniques adapted to the permafrost environment include high frequency EM and ground probing radar. Core drilling is done with calcium chloride brine but trials with heated flushing water indicate potential for cost reduction. The predominant mining method at Nanisivik is room and pillar. Cut and fill is used in some satellites to the main zone. Due to the permafrost, dry drilling is employed in the underground mining. The permafrost enhances ground stability, permitting large underground openings and, as a result, the use of relatively large scale mining equipment. For power conservation, a remote control system for the ventilation fans has reduced mine power costs. The milling of the simple coarse-grained ore in an arctic environment requires special techniques in the design and operation of the plant for materials handling, utilisation of waste heat, reagent selection and tailings disposal. Regulated heavy metal contents in effluents discharged to the sensitive environment are achieved by natural processes. A recent change from sub-aqueous disposal of tailings to beach type deposition within a cell in the tailings area is reviewed. Planning closure of the property presents special problems and an opportunity for innovative techniques. Approximately 25 per cent of the employees at Nanisivik are drawn from the Inuit population of the Canadian Arctic. As the first permanent industrial activity in the High Arctic some innovative approaches to employee relations were required which have resulted in a very stable, culturally mixed community in a remote location.

The homologous series of saturated fatty acids investigated in this study generally show a steady gradation of properties with chain length. The solution pKa values were assumed constant at 4.9, however reported pKa values could be lower or higher. Hematite flotation response and surface pressure for aqueous solutions of these fatty acids were measured as a function of pH. For the shorter chain fatty acids, the undissociated acid was shown to be the predominant surface active species with flotation, supplemented by the physical adsorption of acid anions as the chain length increased. The reduced solubility of the longer fatty acid carbon chains made these reagents ineffective as flotation agents. The maximum flotation response of hematite using tetradecanoic acid corresponded with the precipitation edge of the reagent. The results show that the values of surface pressure of the surfactants are not always a good indication of their effectiveness as flotation collectors.

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. Central Andean (22¦S to 34¦S latitude) Miocene giant ore deposits share common features that reveal their origin. Tectonic and magmatic features include a relation to a shallow subduction zone, an association with the waning or initiation of a magmatic episode, emplacement at the time of uplift associated with crustal thickening and formation at times of major magmatic changes along the Andean margin. Rare Earth Element (REE) signatures in magmas erupted near the time of mineralisation indicate a progressive change from equilibration at depth with a hydrous, intermediate-pressure amphibole-bearing mineral residue to equilibration with an anhydrous high-pressure garnet-bearing assemblage. These features point to a common history. First, a relatively shallow subduction zone leads to hydration of a cool mantle wedge providing a source of fluids which builds up over at least several million years. Arc magmas formed at this time equilibrate with a hornblende-bearing residual mineralogy. Second, a compressive tectonic regime leads to crustal shortening and thickening that facilitates entrapment of arc magmas in the crust. Eventually, the magma-weakened crust yields to horizontal compression causing rapid crustal thickening. Fluids required for mineralisation are liberated as amphibole-bearing assemblages break down to garnet-bearing ones and over pressured fluids are released from plutons. Mineralisation subsequently ceases in the region unless continued dehydration of the slab and mechanical thinning of the continental lithosphere causes the previous conditions to repeat. The type of mineral deposit generated depends on the pre-existing continental lithosphere and the distance from the trench.

In an earlier LCA study, the authors showed that the electricity consumption of the electric furnaces used in the production of the ferronickel and ferrochrome feedstocks made significant contributions towards the Gross Energy Requirement (GER) of stainless steel production, on a æcradle-to-gateÆ basis. Given the relatively low efficiencies associated with electrical power generation, substantial reductions in the GER for stainless steel production could be anticipated if more direct use of thermal energy was made in the ferronickel and ferrochromium smelting stages.In view of these findings, a follow-up study was undertaken to investigate the likely environmental benefits of using bath smelting processes for the production of ferronickel and ferrochromium compared to the traditional rotary kiln-electric furnace processes, but still utilising the electric furnace process for stainless steel production. The METSIM process simulation software package was used to set up models of the two bath smelting processes and provide process energy requirements that were incorporated into the LCA. The environmental impacts considered in the LCA were greenhouse (Global Warming Potential, GWP) and acid rain gas (Acidification Potential, AP) emissions and solid waste emissions.The results of the study showed that the bath smelting route reduced the GER for ferronickel production by about 37 per cent over the traditional route, which translated to about a 21 per cent reduction in the GER for stainless steel. The corresponding reduction for ferrochromium was about half that for ferronickel, and when combined with the ferronickel result gave a 25 per cent reduction in the GER for stainless steel production. Similar reductions were also observed for the GWP and to a lesser extent the AP for both feedstocks, as all primary energy inputs were essentially fossil fuel based. Substantial reductions in solid waste emissions were also indicated for the direct use of ores in smelting. By utilising bath smelting processes for the production of the ferronickel and ferrochromium feedstocks, stainless steelÆs suitability for meeting many of the goals necessary for sustainable development, already recognised because of its particular properties, would be even further enhanced.

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. Nauru Phosphate, which is one of the world's highest grade deposits discovered to date, contributed in 1969, 2.2 million tons of the total world production of 77.7 million tons. Phosphate production, which is the major source of revenue for the island nation, is carried out by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation, headed by a Government appointed Board of Directors. The complete mining operation, including ship loading techniques, is discussed along with proposals at present being investigated to upgrade the Quality of the product.

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.
