The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.

On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

Extraction and Characterisation of Extracellular Polymeric Substances from the Mineral Surface During Bioleaching of Chalcopyrite Concentrate A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was used to bioleach chalcopyrite concentrate in a stirred tank reactor. The results show that up to 84.7 per cent of copper extraction could be achieved in 24 days at a pulp density of 6 per cent. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite concentrate tended to increase with an increase of dissolved total iron concentration. Furthermore, the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on the surface of the chalcopyrite concentrate was extracted and analysed. EPS was extracted at the first, third, eighth, 16th and 24th day during bioleaching, which mainly consisted of proteins, lipids, sugars and ferric irons. After the eighth day the total amount of EPS remained relatively constant. However, the amount of ferric iron in the EPS decreased in a large scale. The ore residue analysis indicates that the decrease of ferric iron was mainly due to the formation of jarosite on the mineral surface.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

Ore from the Browns deposit near Batchelor, in the Northern Territory of Australia, is a fine-grained polymetallic sulfide ore hosted in graphitic black shale. Minerals of economic significance are seigenite (Co,Ni)4S3, Galena (PbS) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with minor Sphalerite (ZnS). Gangue minerals include quartz, carbon and K-feldspar. The grain size is fine, with a significant amount of the seigenite present as Early flotation work determined that a grind size of around 20 microns was required to achieve clean sulfide concentrates. This work recommended oil agglomeration flotation, in which small sulfide minerals were collected, then loosely agglomerated with oil ahead of flotation into a heavily mineralised froth. In the 400 kg/hr prototype plant this froth proved unmanageable. A conventional flotation circuit after grinding to a P80 of 24 microns and using very low flotation pulp densities resulted in an 86 per cent cobalt recovery.The paper analyses further laboratory work which has increased cobalt recovery to 91 per cent by grinding to û250 microns ahead of flash flotation. The real cobalt recovery breakthrough comes from flash flotation of the whole mill discharge rather than the more usual flash flotation of cyclone underflow. Flash flotation tailings are ground to û38 microns and are floated under normal flotation conditions with only the scavenger concentrates being reground to 20 microns.A one tonne per hour prototyping campaign is scheduled to demonstrate the robustness of this circuit.

This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

Low sulfidation epithermal deposits are important sources of gold and silver, and are considered the extinct analogues of modern geothermal systems. The aerial extents of alteration halos that surround twenty-two epithermal deposits range from 4 to 315 km2, with many less than 60 km2. Deposits with alteration halos <30 km2 typically have well defined limits, whereas deposits with alteration exceeding 30 km2 are commonly complicated by overlapping alteration centres related to adjacent epithermal deposits or other deposit types (i.e. high sulfidation, porphyry). Irrespective of the physical coverage of vein or alteration halos, both large (>60 km2) and small (<20 km2) deposits can contain large amounts of gold and silver. The size ranges for twenty-one analogous liquid-dominated geothermal fields from around the world have a restricted size range of 5 to 60 km2 and irrespective of physical size, commonly have multiple zones of focused fluid upflow. From an exploration perspective the comparison between epithermal deposits and geothermal fields provide the following four important points. 1) Alteration halos surrounding epithermal deposits as well as those for analogous geothermal systems show a range of sizes, although most are less than 60 km2. Therefore, where alteration exceeds 60 km2 multiple vein systems related to several paleogeothermal systems are predicted. 2) Multiple upflow zones are common in geothermal fields of all sizes (5 to 60 km2) and although difficult to demonstrate in epithermal deposits there is a strong possibility of discovering several discrete adjacent mineralised centres. 3) The orientation of veins parallels the principle orientation of the surrounding alteration and where alteration is wider than the vein strike length, this could suggest the occurrence of adjacent veins. 4) The physical size of both veins and alteration zones is not important in relation to amount of contained gold, as both large and small can contain large amounts of gold. These conclusions provide insight into the physical size limits and hydrologic structure of these paleogeothermal systems and highlight the potential for multiple mineralisation centres within a single alteration halo.

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of MgCO3 was investigated using isothermal experiments performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer under a nitrogen atmosphere at 380¦, 400¦, 450¦ and 480¦C. The weight loss data as a function of time were modified to give the fraction that reacted (ß) and the rate of reaction (dß/dt) vs. time (t). Kinetic analysis of the experimental results, using three different methods, showed that diffusion predominates the MgCO3 decomposition over the investigated temperature range, with the data being best fitted by JanderÆs equation ([1−(1−ß)1/3]2=kt). The activation energy was estimated by Arrhenius plots using both the initial reaction rates and rate constants from fitting the above equation. The values estimated were 27.1 and 171.4 kJ/mol respectively.

Infrared spectroscopy has the ability to accurately measure mineralogy of drill cores, allowing for better spatial characterisation of iron ore deposits and potentially improving the prediction of key mining and processing parameters at the deposit scale. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is using infrared spectroscopic drill core logging to provide fast and accurate mineralogy for diamond cores and reverse circulation (RC) samples.Mineralogy can be predicted from infrared spectroscopic drill core data with errors on estimates ranging from six to 12 weight per cent. The error on the clay estimates is significantly lower than for hematite and goethite content estimates. This manuscript presents the results from a study on a bedded iron ore deposit, hosted in the Brockman iron formation, for which infrared spectroscopic data were collected on all of the diamond and RC drilling. One of the important directions of further increase of quality and efficiency of control of mining companies and branches is the creation of the operation and development monitoring systems of such facilities. The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. However until the present time no scientific and methodical ground for system monitoring of the mining companies and branches has been created. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.
