Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey's test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width-to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. In the Ngakuru area zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lacustrine vitric tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation and two of the deposits are being mined. The Ngakuru Formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 240 ka, and is overlain by younger alluvial sands and gravels. Individual zeolite deposits contain 50 - 80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified vitric tuffs and are localised along NE-trending normal faults. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, Kfeldspar and smectite are also present. The zeolites and other minerals are very fine grained (<10 8m), with open meshes of crystals that result in high porosities (52 - 70 per cent) in mordenite-rich tuffs. Zeolitic tuff samples typically have cation exchange capacities of 80 to 110 meq/100 g and internal surface areas of 25 - 58 m2/g, which combine to give high liquid and odour absorption capacities. The first zeolite deposit (Mangatete) was found in 1992, and this and the Twist Road deposit are worked by quarry benching into the side of hills. The zeolitic tuffs are dried and crushed to produce a variety of products including adsorbents for soaking up oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, animal feed supplements, water treatment, and sports turf and slow release fertiliser. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits formed at shallow depth (<100 m) along fault zones from reaction of glass-rich tuff beds with groundwater-diluted geothermal water during the late Quaternary, and are as young as 8500 yr BP from 14C dating of plant material in sinter associated with the Mangatete deposit.

A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunneling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht. The 13.6-m (44.6-ft) machine, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau, Germany. To get from the European to the Asian side of Istanbul, people and goods have to cross the Bosporus Straits. So far, two road bridges as well as ferries provide the only transport link between the two parts of the city and the two continents. The tense traffic situation for the nearly 14 million residents of the city and for international transit traffic should be improved considerably thanks to the construction of a new road tunnel under the Bosporus. ?The project is certainly one of the most challenging tunneling operations currently being addressed in the world,? said Herrenknecht project manager Georg Schleer. The route of the ?Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project? runs around 100 m (330 ft) below sea level at its deepest point. The interior diameter of the tunnel will be 12 m (40 ft) so that two lanes in each direction can be accommodated. They will extend one above the other on two levels. 3.34 km (2.1 miles) of the tunnel with a total length of 5.4 km (3.3 miles) are being created by a 13.6-m- (44.6-ft-) diameter Herrenknecht TBM that will begin its underground mission from a launch shaft on the Asian side.

"Crushing and grinding of ores and their beneficiation by washing away gangue minerals has been practiced since ancient times. Primitive crushing was done by hand pounding the ore with a hard stone then by using metallic hammers. The mortar and pestle was mechanized using a lever and when the size of operations increased in the middle ages, the stamp mill was introduced. The grindstone played an important role in grinding of ores. Panning for gold and hand sorting of minerals were two old methods of separation, now gave way to modern techniques. Flotation started in the middle of the nineteenth century by using oils to collect the mineral particles and float them on the surface of the aqueous slurry. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that organic compounds were affective floating agents. Textbooks written by distinguished engineers such as Rittinger, Rickard, Pryor, Taggart, Richards, Gaudin, and others contributed to the recognition of this field as a new discipline to be taught in Universities. INTRODUCTIONThe ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals (Figure 1). Another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. The present day Georgia was known in ancient times as Colchis and was a center for gold working. It was known to the ancient Greek as the land of Golden Fleece. The use of special cloth to catch gold particles was also described by Agricola in his 1555 book De Re Metallica (Figure 2)."

The proposed Second Avenue Subway Project in New York City is approximately 8.5 miles long, up to a depth of 120 feet beneath grade and runs the length of the eastern side of the island of Manhattan from Harlem in the north to the financial district in the south. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the existing parallel line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and upgrading access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. This subway line will have 16 new stations providing transfers to the existing Metro-North commuter rail service and to New York City Transit subway lines and bus services. The first phase of construction includes two TBM rock tunnels 2.4 miles long and two new large and shallow rock cavern stations with clear span openings ranging from 70 to 100 feet and length in excess of 1000 feet with 615 feet center platform, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 20 feet to 40 feet. The design methodology for these large and shallow rock caverns consists of using well known empirical methods for initial estimate of support requirements and then two and three dimensional continuum and discontinuum analyses for verification of the selected excavation sequence and support system. This paper describes the analysis and design methodologies used for the two large and shallow rock caverns with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in bothAustralia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.   The implications of the current form of additional profits tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of additional profits tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation.   Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional profits tax is both time, and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory.   A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with resource rent taxes. The review includes examples based on the structure of additional profits tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

Many copper processing flowsheets in the Democratic Republic of Congo include the leaching of oxide ores containing copper and cobalt, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, and precipitation of cobalt salt. Recently, cobalt price gained momentum, driven mostly by the fast-growing electric vehicles battery market. The ore blending scenarios tend to prioritise high cobalt grade ore, whatever the content of copper and other impurities. Therefore, many copper solvent extraction circuits are running below design capacity. The variability of feed induces a variability of the leach solution with respect to copper, manganese, and silica contents. It is thus important to adjust hydrodynamic and metallurgical parameters of the solvent extraction plant to optimise metallurgical performance, production cost, and the quality of the copper electrolyte. This paper presents some results on how solvent extraction plant parameters have been managed in two solvent extraction plants running with lower than designed copper input. INTRODUCTION Referring to a report of the chamber of commerce of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the online publication Agence Ecofin (2019) indicated that the DRC ranks in the fifth position of the world top copper producing countries with over 1.2 million tons produced in 2018. The same year, 66% of the world’s cobalt was produced in the DRC at over 106,000 tons. If the political situation remained stable and the new tax regime introduced in 2018 did not deter private investors, copper production could reach 1.4 million tons/a in 2020 as pointed out in Mining.com (2019). Forecast figures for DRC cobalt production vary widely depending on analysts. The DRC online magazine Actualité.cd (2018) referring to a ministerial source forecasts over 141,000 t cobalt/a for 2020. The reality will depend on many factors, including the selling price, the supply compared to the demand, and finally the reaction of investors to the new DRC tax regime. The growing electric vehicle batteries market has been the major key driver of the price of cobalt. The five years historical cobalt price graph in figure 1 from infomine.com (2019) shows that the price of cobalt peaked at over 40 USD/lb in the first quarter of 2018. Cited by the online Magazine Creamer Media, Smith (2019) has indicated that the long-term demand of cobalt will likely remain strong.

"CP-06 is an NATM cross passage which connects up-line and down-line metro tunnels near Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. It lies completely in loose silty sand to dense sand with water table almost touching the ground surface after Chennai floods. Pre-grouting was done before excavation to seal the area and to ensure no-loose pockets. The heading was excavated successfully but while benching excavation huge water ingress started seeping out. Sand also permeated along with water which became unstoppable due to cavity formation and caused the up-line tunnel to sink considerably. A large grouting exercise was carried out with different grout materials and techniques both from the ground surface and inside of tunnel to stop the water ingress and stabilize the tunnel. This paper describes the chronology of events that occurred in the tunnel during CP-06 issue. It elaborates all the different grouting techniques involved in the whole process of the tunnel stabilization. It includes a finite element analysis using Rocscience RS2 9.0 software showing the possible cause of sand incursion with water from the CP invert which lead to the tunnel settlement. This paper also describes the after effects and the lesson learnt from the whole incident.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of Metro Rails has become the latest alternative to cope up with the transportation demand of the growing urban cities population. L&T SUCG JV constructed Chennai Rail Metro Phase II Contract UAA-04 which included design and construction of approximately 4 km of route length of underground mass transit railway including 3 underground stations. This package also includes 12 cross passages which are NATM tunnels connecting upline and down-line side of TBM tunnel for safe evacuation of passengers in case of emergency. As per NFPA guidelines, this is a mandatory structure and there should be atleast one cross passage in 244m tunnel length.CP-06 is a cross passage connecting upline and downline tunnel between Pachiyappa College Station and KMC Station, in Chennai Metro. During the construction of CP-06, heavy water seepage of around 450 liters per minute was encountered during second round of benching excavation after full heading was excavated. An inflow of around 12-15 cum of sand and silt was also observed inside the tunnel along with the seepage water, which created piping inside the TBM tunnel causing it to settle continuously with time. A huge effort was made to stop the water ingress along with loose sand which was causing the running tunnel to settle, involving all possible grouting methods and temporary support installation."

Nowadays, most grinding mills driven by a wrap-around ring motor are operating successfully. Some of the earlier problems could be attributed to the lateral stiffness and stability of their bearings. As a result, modifications to the bearings included the rearrangement of the shoes, or the addition of more shoes, closer to the horizontal centerline. This technical paper reports a study of the effects of bearings on the lateral stiffness of grinding mills driven by a wrap-around ring motor. The discussions cover the design of the four shoe trunnion bearings and examine the effects of the angular location of the shoes.

"Earth provides natural resources, such as fossil fuels and minerals that are vital for human life. As the global demand grows, especially for strategic minerals, commodity prices rapidly rise. Thus there is an identifiable risk of increasing supply shortage for minerals. Hence a major element in a long-term economic strategy must be, to ensure security of supply for these strategic minerals. In this rapidly changing global economic landscape, deep sea mining has gone from a distant possibility to a likely reality within just a decade.Although deep sea minerals extraction was investigated in the 1970’s, it was abandoned because of changing commodity economics, advances in on-land exploration techniques, growing concern on environmental impact, and political and legal aspects with regard to ownership issues. The developmental data from those days, if still available, are not adequate to allow engineering and building of an integral system for extraction of deep sea minerals without additional R&D work. Thus, deep sea mining is yet to attain a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) sufficient to successfully undertake deep sea mining operations, from resource discovery to resource assessment and to resource exploitation [Blue Mining, 2014]."

Minerales Monclova, S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) is owned by Grupo Acerero Del Norte (GAN). This company has 4 underground coal mines and 1 open pit to feed it?s steelmaking facilities located in the city of Monclova in the North of México in the state of Coahuila. The current underground mines are Mine 3, 5, 6 and 7 and the future projects are Mines 8 and 9. In the last years Mines 2 and 4 have been closed because they finished their coal resources. The remaining mines have bigger production and developments requirements in order to accomplish the goals of the company. The mines have been working in deeper and gassier areas. These conditions have required improvements in the ventilation design and methane control systems for all the mines. In some cases the ventilation of some of the MIMOSA?S mines has been increased 80%, and besides this, an intensive methane drainage program has been applied using horizontal in-seam boreholes and gob wells. The short-term ventilation plan includes the construction of 3 new vertical shafts with 5 and 6 meters diameter for Mines 5, 6 and 7 and the purchasing of bigger new main and backup fans for each one of these mines. One of these vertical shafts and the purchasing of the first 2 fans is already in process. This paper will explain the evolution and results of the ventilation and methane drainage systems in MIMOSA and the ventilation planning for the future years.

The town of Greenwich, CT, an exclusive suburb of New York City awarded several contracts for the installation of sanitary sewer in the North Mianus section of town. The Valley Road section was the most challenging from a rock excavation standpoint. The cut was up to 14 ft (4.25m), with adjacent utilities [20 in. (500mm) water, 6 in. (150mm) water and 8 in. (200mm) gas] located to within 5 ft. (1.5m) of the proposed sewer trench. Rock types varied but were ultra metamorphic in nature, ranging from quartzites, granite gneiss and various types of migmatities.

In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). "Historically, tailings management in a northern climate has involved the deposition of tailings into the Tailings Management Area (TMA) as conventional slurry. This type of system is obviously viable but presents challenges that are difficult to manage as circumstances change over the life of mine. These issues can include:? Increases in mill throughput, and? Life of the TMA for the life of mine.This case study will present how thickened, high-density, non-segregating tailings are used as an alternative to conventional slurry disposal to achieve greater storage capacity and enhanced environmental performance for a gold tailings facility in a northern climate. This paper will focus on how this change in deposition strategy accommodated the increased throughput of the mill and the increased life of mine. Specifically, the paper will discuss the addition and integration of new processes to the exiting mill system to accommodate the tailings management issues. It will highlight the challenges from laboratory testing to pre-feasibility to the engineered design of the thickened tailings system implemented at Musselwhite Mine.BACKGROUNDGoldcorp Canada’s Musselwhite Mine, in Northwestern Ontario (120 km north of Pickle Lake), is an underground gold mining operation that began production in 1997. The current mill throughput is about 4000 tpd (1.4 Mtpa). Gold extraction is based on a CIP process with cyanide destruction.The existing tailings management area (TMA) is located about 2 km southwest of the mill complex. The TMA is contained by high ground to the north and to the west and flanged by a moraine ridge along the south side. A number of dams have been constructed along this ridge. The dams were first built in 1996 and subsequently raised in 2000 and again in 2005. Excess tailings pond water is discharged to a polishing pond then released to the environment via a wetland.The TMA was originally designed to contain 13.7 Mt of tailings under a ponded surface for closure. The water cover was to inhibit adverse long-term environmental effects because the tailings contain pyrrhotite and other sulphide-bearing minerals that are potentially acid generating. The design was modified during Stage 3 Construction in 2005 to expand the storage capacity to 17.3 Mt (Golder, 2005). As of end of 2009, over 16 Mt of tailings had been deposited in the TMA. The slurried tailings were historically deposited at 50% solids."

Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

Three types of X-ray analytical instrumentation were compared for applications in the secondary brass and bronze industry. The instruments were a conventional X-ray spectrograph, a portable X-ray spectrograph, and a radioiso-topic X-ray analyzer using balanced filters. The following two general applications were considered: Rapid identification for sorting scrap metals and quantitative analyses to provide guidance in the melting and casting of alloys. Twenty-three analyzed copper-base alloys were used as standards. Although the alloys varied widely in composition, matrix correction procedures were not necessary except for copper. The conventional X-ray spectrograph provides positive identification of the alloys and quantitative values for the six elements investigated--aluminum, copper, iron, lead, tin, and zinc. Equivalent results were obtained with the portable X-ray spectrograph for those elements whose characteristic X-rays are in the wavelength range of the instrument. The radioisotopic X-ray analyzer distinguishes certain groups of alloys and provides quantitative determinations for copper, lead, tin, and zinc. The sensitivity of the analyzer was marginal for the determination of small concentrations of elements of atomic number 26 or lower.
