"A number of Reports of Investigations pertaining to the extraction of potash from cal¬cined polyhalite have been made by various members of the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. These reports describe results obtained in the study of samples of polyhalite (2CaS04.K2S04.MgS04.2H20) from deposits of possible com¬mercial importance in Texas and New Mexico.3Storch and Clarke6 in their initial paper presenting data on the properties of Texas polyhalite demonstrated the desirability of calcination and subsequent hot extraction with water as a satisfactory pronedure for treatment of this potash-bearing salt. Their preliminary data have been supplemented by an additional report7 dealing more particularly with the leaching of raw and calcined polyhalite with water and with saturated sodium chloride solu¬tions. Further data8 have been reported as a result of experiments made in a small labora¬tory rotary-tube furnace under various calcination and extraction conditions. Hot water was used as the leaching solution in all of these tests.In addition to the data on calcination and extraction, two processes as proposed by Storch and Clarke have been published by Wroth,9 and more recently a number of very promising processes have been proposed by Storoh and Fragen.10"

On December 2013 a MEMU exploded at a blasting site in Norway, after burning for more than two hours. This paper describes the analyses made to determine the actual yield of the explosion, the lessons learned from the event and the actions taken as a consequence. The conclusions of the analysis were the following: - The yield of the explosion was 650-1450 kg TNT. In terms of AN and ANE they correspond to 1300 – 3700 kg AN, or 950 – 2450 kg ANE or ANE/AN blend. These quantities are 8 to 31 % of the explosive precursors in the truck. The burning of the truck and its load for two and a half hours had consumed more than two thirds (perhaps up to 90 %) of the explosive precursor material.

Exploration drilling by Joint Venture partners CRA Exploration Pty Ltd and Elders Mining PNG Pty Ltd has discovered a signif- icant copper and gold deposit at the Wafi River prospect, 60km WSW of Lae in Papua New Guinea. An indicated resource of 18Mt at 2.5g/t Au using a lg/t cutoff has been delineated in Zone A. No estimate has been determined for the separate copper occurr- ence at Rafferty's Zone but the copper will be significant to the project. Metallurgical studies on the gold indicate that the primary ore is refractory to direct cyanidation giving a highly variable and inadequate response. All conventional refractory ore oxidation techniques perform well on both ore and pyrite concentrate and oxidation occurs rapidly. No metallurgical studies on the copper mineralisation have been undertaken. Hypogene covellite and chalcocite copper mineralisation is associated with an intensely quartz-stockworked, and quartz and alunite-altered intrusive. Economically significant gold mineralisation occurs in distal subhorizontal lenses, within a sedimentary host, that plunge toward the intrusive. These lenses are sandwiched between overlying quartz and alunite-altered zones and underlying quartz and smectite zones in a mixed zone of quartz, dickite, kaolinite and illite alteration. The alteration and mineralisation is classified as a high sulphidation, epithermal style resulting from the influx of hot, acid magmatic fluids. Preliminary land ownership, road access, power supply and mine infrastructure studies are in progress. The project is currently at an advanced exploration stage.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. This paper presents a dynamic analyses of heap leach pad stability under high phreatic levels and various levels of seismic loading. The dynamic analysis were conducted as fully non-linear two dimensional analyses with fully coupled liquefaction triggering using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer code. Also, the geotechnical parameters, appropriate earthquake record selection and modification, model calibration, numerical analyses and results are discussed.

El Complejo Pasco —ubicado en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes de la sierra central del Perú, en el distrito de San Francisco de Asís, provincia y departamento de Pasco— está constituido por las unidades subterráneas de Atacocha y Porvenir, la operación a tajo abierto Glory Hole y tres proyectos brownfield ubicados en la periferia de la concesión. Tanto Atacocha como Porvenir son depósitos tipo skarn, con mineralización distal de Zn y Pb(+/-Au) y proximal de Zn+/-Cu, asociados a cuerpos hipoabisales de composición cuarzoandesítica y andesítica. Estudios y exploraciones recientes muestran otros tipos de sistemas mineralizados, como brechas tectónicas con reactivación hidrotermal tardía, un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia en vetas, cuerpos irregulares, entre otros, y un sistema tipo pórfido. La Falla Milpo-Atacocha, de rumbo N-S, juega un rol importante, ya que los intrusivos (Stock Milpo y Santa Bárbara) que generan la mineralización del tipo skarn están controlados por esta falla. Existe otro tipo de mineralización, asociado al sistema NW-SE (Falla 13): un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia. Este trabajo pretende mostrar los últimos avances en las interpretaciones metalogenéticas, producto de un intenso programa de exploración (aproximadamente 80,000 m. DDH / 2018) y de un programa de recategorización de recursos (a través de 60,000 m. DDH), que permitirá hacer posible una operación sostenible de 12 años.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

Wettability of graphite by synthetic SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MnO slags with varied MnO content and by industrial slags was studied at 1350-1600 °C using sessile drop method under argon atmosphere. Initial contact angle was the lowest (110-115o) for the MnO-free slag. For slags with 10-40 wt% MnO, the initial contact angle was in the range 125-135o. The contact angle decreased with the contact time. The change in the contact angle with slag mass was found insignificant. The surface tension of slags obtained from the drop shape analyses was 500-800 mN/m and varied in a narrow range with temperature and MnO concentration. The reduction rate increased with increasing MnO content in the synthetic slag from 20 wt% to 40wt% and temperature. Increasing temperature also increased the rate of reduction. No correlation was observed between the reduction rate and MnO content in the synthetic slags in the range 0-20 wt% and in the industrial slags. The rate of SiO2 reduction from the molten slag was close to the rate of MnO reduction. The MnO-free slag had the largest contact area with graphite substrate. Online cyanide analysers have been successfully used to control free cyanide in the gold/silver leach process for over 15 years. Use of such analysers leads to cyanide savings and improvement in recoveries. Plants with leach cyanide analysers show both lower and more consistent cyanide levels in tailings. Cyanide code compliance requires meeting residual cyanide targets in tailings. Monitoring and logging of the residual cyanide in plant tailings and effluent is required. Meeting targets may require cyanide recovery/destruction processes to be implemented. The operating cost of destroying cyanide is often the same order of magnitude as the cyanidation cost. Various cyanide destruction and/or recovery processes are reviewed. Choice of a process consistent with the environmental and operational requirements is illustrated. Online weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) analysers have recently been developed and introduced on gold plants. The application of a WAD 1000 online CNWAD analyser at a large gold plant is presented. The analyser ensures code compliance, reduces cyanide destruction process operating costs and forms a historical record of CNWAD values in tailings.

Techniques have been developed for the dissolution of a wide range of rocks and minerals by a sodium peroxide sinter process. A olarge number of elements are determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and other elements such as arsenic and sulphur are determined by chemical analytical methods. The methods adopted to overcome inter-element and ionization effects on the atomic absorption results are discussed.

To determine whether reflectors could substitute for the trip lights referred to in the Federal Mine Safety Code, the Bureau of Mines studied trip safety devices under simulated haulageway conditions. The noticeability of reflectors compared with trip lights and fluorescent panels was evaluated from distances of up to 850 feet with light source intensities of up to 1-6 foot-candles (ft c). Reflectors tested consisted of a reflective lens in a holder secured to a frame that can be attached to a trip. Reflectors were found to be suitable for use as a trip safety device. In fact, for the conditions in many underground haulageways some reflectors would be more effective than a permissible trip light.

The theme of the conference is "excellence", an epithet of special significance in tertiary education. It appears in the mission statements, goals and plans to achieve them of most, and quite possibly all, tertiary institutions in Australia. In the context of excellence, this paper examines the current statue of professional education in the principal mining industry related discipline of Mining Engineering. It furthermore, identifies and discusses a number of special problems in mining education that the tertiary sector has long endured. Some of these problems are becoming acute, and solutions will have to be found soon in order for the industry to be assured of the supply of well motivated and appropriately qualified young engineers and scientists necessary to achieve and maintain the excellent to which it aspires.

The Brightwater conveyance system includes 26 km of tunnels, a 130 mgd pump station, 2 km of micro tunnels, and a 2.4 km outfall. The tunnels extend from Woodinville to Puget Sound through varying soils in 1 to 7 bars of hydrostatic pressure and depths to 185 m. The tunnel diameters range from 4 to 6 m and include numerous lining systems. This paper highlights major shaft and tunnel design, including dual cellshafts, multiple pipe configuration tunnels, polymer concrete segments, and the use of a one pass lining designed to convey high pressure effluent.
