"Sonar array-based non-invasive flow measurement technology is becoming an accepted and many times a preferred method of measuring challenging single and multi-phase flows in the mineral processing industry. This fundamental sensor and measurement technology has been extended to two developments that provide new measurement capabilities useful for monitoring and managing slurry flows and pipes.The first development is the non-invasive measurement of real-time velocity profile of slurry flow in horizontal pipes. Multiple non-invasive passive sensors measure localized velocities and are combined to provide a velocity profile measurement. This information can be used to determine the approach and onset of solid deposition on the bottom of the pipe. Having this information in real time can enable operation at lower velocities and/or higher solids concentration while avoiding solids deposition or plugging and its associated operational costs.The second development is the non-invasive measurement of pipe wear on slurry lines. Presently, such measurements are made by hand-held portable ultrasonic thickness gages. The numerous shortfalls associated with the manual method are overcome with a set of permanently or semi-permanently installed transducers clamped onto the outside of the pipe. This ring of sensors contains a series of conformable ultrasonic transducers spaced around the circumference, which are used to measure the thickness of the pipe under their respective locations. Compared to manual methods, this system and approach results in better repeatability and accuracy. It also decreases inspection labor costs and pipe access requirements. The minimal accuracy variations in the presence of varying environmental temperatures will be shown. Trending of pipe wall thicknesses in high wear pipelines will be illustrated. The benefits of significantly improved pipe wear monitoring in hydrotransport lines with abrasive solids, and associated improvement in the ability to insure safe operation and avoidance of costly environmental damage due to leaks caused by pipe wear will be discussed."

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, <5, <5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. Invaluable knowledge and unexpected insights gained from sampling studies at Olympic Dam have helped to improve our understanding of the distribution of economic and deleterious elements within the Olympic Dam deposit.CITATION:Ehrig, K J and Pitard, F F, 2017. With IIT research institute as a cosponsor, this seventh mineral waste Utilization Symposium was funded by the Bureau of Mines through its Division of Mineral Resources Technology. Environmental scientists and engineers from five countries (Canada, Netherlands, Austria, England, Guatemala) besides the United States participated in the symposium, which was held Oct. 20-21, 1980, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. Of the 25 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial waste, and scrap metal, 21 are summarized herein.

A significant increase in the side shear capacity over a period of time is often observed in case of driven piles. This phenomenon is referred to as ?setup? or ?freeze?. This phenomenon cannot be predicted based on the knowledge of the engineering properties of soil. Different kinds of mechanisms have been proposed in order to explain set-up in cohesive soils. In engineering practice, set-up is incorporated in design on the basis of empirical formulae and depends to a large extent on personal experience and judgment of the design engineer. Set-up is a natural process which cannot be accelerated by any existing practice. A research was initiated to investigate the mechanism of pile set-up in clayey soils and explore the possibility of accelerating the set-up process by an electro-kinetic method. The system chosen for the present study consists of a prototype steel pile driven in kaolinite clay. A laboratory test program was developed at Cleveland State University in order to meet the goals of the proposed research. Results obtained from these tests are very encouraging and show pile capacity increase of 200% within the first 5 days of electric gradient application versus those that experience natural set-up. In this paper, theoretical considerations and laboratory test results are presented and discussed.

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. "This paper describes a new, proven approach for tailing disposal. Not only is the disclosed system less damaging to the environment, it is also less costly to operate, to close down and maintain in perpetuity. The basic concept is to discharge thickened tailing from one permanent location.This creates a conical or hill-like deposit which:(1) requires lower perimeter dykes for equivalent storage capacity;(2) eliminates decant towers and decant lines;(3) requires no steep dams built of tailing;(4) is stable:(5) requires only a small pond outside the deposit;(6) decreases pollution of the surrounding environment by water seepage and deflation; and(7) simplifies abandonment and ""closing-down"" operations.The approach is made possible by the fact that, at a sufficiently high ratio of solids to water, tailing material can be made to accumulate at slopes of 5 or 6 per cent -- considerably steeper than possible by traditional methods using low solids-to-water ratios. To achieve the necessary solids-water ratio (35 to 60 per cent), it may be necessary to install a thickener. It is expected, however, that at many concentrators it may be possible to discharqe relatively clear plant water through a line separate from the tailing line, thus reducing the load on the thickener."

The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) technique to measure the integrity of coal ribs. The CPRR characterizes the rib composition and evaluates its impact on the inherent stability of the coal ribs. The CPRR utilizes four parameters: rib homogeneity, bedding condition, face cleat orientation with respect to entry direction, and rib height. All these parameters are measurable in the field. A rib data collecting procedure and a simple sheet to calculate the CPRR were developed.

With the rapid expansion of our industrialised society in recent years the demand for minerals has grown to such an extent that uncertainties about availability and cost have arisen, especially in the case of energy minerals.Minerals have acquired a new dimension for governments as the availability of these resources is interwoven with the ability of governments to achieve their developmental goals on national and international levels. Accordingly, the supply of minerals will increasingly be affected by social and political factors.

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson, County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut, coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 316-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an. extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

The Imhoflot G-Cell, a new development in the pneumatic flotation technology (which incorporates centrifugal forces in the separating vessel) is a recent innovation in the mineral processing world. The G-Cell was invented by Dr Rainer Imhof and commercialised by Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd. In a short time span a number of plants and units have been successfully commissioned in the mineral processing industry. In addition, a number of industrial G-Cell flotation plants are in the process of construction for the purpose of coal preparation and environmental remediation. In this paper two industrial installations have been highlighted together with a pilot plant test programme investigating ultra fine flotation recovery for a base metal operation.

The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity. Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer. Having concluded that steaming coal in particular is likely to become even more important as a generator of base load electricity, the paper looks at the opportunities this presents for exporters such as Australia, and touches on some factors that could prevent development of those opportunities. This paper will concentrate on electrical energy. For the purposes of this paper, the Pacific Basin refers essentially to Australia, New Zealand and the Asian countries bordering the Western Pacific. As a supplier, Siberia is not included because, although it has great potential, it is thought that problems of climate, infrastructure and political restructuring will delay the realisation of that potential until the next century. Although it deals with the Pacific Basin region, where many countries are industrialising rapidly from a predominantly agricultural base, it looks at the experience of mature industrial DECD economies where their experiences seem relevant.

Important factors in dredge design are the estimation of total head, and the determination of flow in and around suction nozzles and in pipe lines. Total head for the dredge pump is calculated from velocity, static, and friction heads. Flow into suction nozzles depends on whether hydraulic jets or mechanical cutters are used, and on nozzle shape. Design of pipe lines depends on the transportation characteristics of the pulp, skin friction, swirl, and the avoidance of cavitation. Measurement and control of flow is important.INTRODUCTIONEconomic deposits of heavy minerals along the east coast of Australia occur in frontal dunes, which are normally unconsolidated and granular, or in hind dune areas which may contain indurated seams interspersed with loose material. In working frontal dunes, dredging depths are usually shallow since values do not persist for more than a few feet below sea level. However, the controlling factor in dredging the hind dune areas is the level of the water table and suction dredges may be designed to mine to depths of 120 ft, or even more, if necessary.In previous applications of suction dredges in the industry attention was directed primarily towards production and there was only limited research on fundamental techniques. However, with lower grade deposits now forming the major ore reserves, production levels and profit margins will fall unless more efficient dredges are developed.For satisfactory design of dredges it is essential that the total head be accurately estimated and that detailed information of the principles of flow in and around suction nozzles be determined. This paper presents information gained from field experience and laboratory investigation on these aspects.
