Added value is a term loosely used in the industry, but what exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product and more importantly how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. But what is misleading is that producing value added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases firms that make "value-added" products are not very profitable. It is not only important to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when we look at value-added opportunities, we must understand how to obtain the value added and more importantly how to maintain the value. There are four major factors that limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper will examine these factors and will use the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

"INTRODUCTION In his landmark Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) 2000 writing, “Theory and Design of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors According to The Expanded Conveyor Technology” J.A. Dos Santos generalized the belt conveyor technology to include all possible variations and augmentations including, particularly, multiple belts along a common carrying and/or return path as is the case most notably in the sandwich belt high angle conveyor technology and belt-on-belt type intermediate (booster) drives. Figure 1, excerpted from his writing, represented the proposition of the generalized “Expanded Conveyor Technology,” abbreviated ExConTec.This formed the basis for the generalization which was completed in theory and in math before 2000 and presented by J. A. Dos Santos at the Y2K SME Annual Meeting. The writing can be found in the SME library (Dos Santos J. A., January 2000). While Figure 1 with the supporting mathematical development solved the generalization, it failed to identify the variation that would prove to have the greatest significance. As with most significant developments, necessity is the mother of invention. This is the case with the Adder Snake belt technology, the subject of this writing. BACKGROUND The concept of elevating bulk materials at a high angle using the sandwich belt concept was first introduced in 1951. That introduction did not produce any lasting success. Commercial success was achieved in the 1970s with the Loop Belt, a sandwich belt elevator of C-shaped profile developed by Stephens Adamson of Canada. The Loop Belt was and is the vital element of a conveyor based self-unloading ship system. Such self-unloading ships have had great success achieving unloading rates above 10,000 t/h with Loop Belts of width to 3,048mm (120”). Being strictly of C-profile, Loop Belts could not be adapted to the general high angle conveying path which is predominantly along a straight incline. It was the success of the Loop Belts that inspired the Dos Santos Sandwich Belts of the 1980s. These expanded the Loop Belt capabilities by producing endless elevating profiles that could take the most direct and/or conforming path between the loading and discharge points. Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor systems have seen great success through the years, with more than 200 installations throughout the world."

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to supplement its two existing main fans. The third fan will operate in parallel with the two existing fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, NM, is a US Department of Energy (DOE), Carlsbad Area Office, facility that is designed to permanently dispose of US defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep, bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for modifying, supplementing or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel et al., 1997) to identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling con¬straints. WIPP was scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP 's ability to declare facility readiness. Therefore, operational disruptions during the system tie-in had to be minimized. All engineering for the project has been com¬pleted, and physical modifications were begun in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

"Quebrada Blanca is a porphyry copper deposit located in the Eocene-Oligocene belt of Chilean Andes. Operation started in 1994 and original reserves for supergene mineralisation gave a life-of-mine (LOM) of 20 years; however, further exploration extended the LOM until 2020.In order to optimise the remaining five years of supergene resource, geometallurgical variables were added to the geological model including copper recovery and acid consumption. LOM plan encompasses finishing the phase number eight and the future development of phases 11 and 13.LOM lithologies include diorites, quartz monzonites, porphyries, igneous and tourmaline breccias. Main alterations are: potassic, phyllic and argillic. Litho-alterations or geometallurgical units were formed by combining five types of rocks with three types of alteration. According to statistical information, the deposit can be represented with 12 litho-alteration units, which cover 98 per cent of the LOM volume.For copper recovery information, there were 40 mini-columns tests made in order to obtain kinetics curves and copper recovery values after comparing the difference between head and tails grades. Acid consumption was obtained using an automatic neutraliser device-based test.Historical data said that copper recovery in pads after 450 days of irrigation is around 75 per cent of recoverable copper while acid consumption is around 5.5 kg/t.According to this study, lower recoveries are related with potassic-altered diorites and argillic-altered quartz monzonites with values around 60 per cent. On the other hand, best recoveries could be found in potassic-altered quartz monzonites and argillic-altered diorites with values closer to 80 per cent.It was also revealed that the most reactive rock is the potassic-altered diorite with 12 kg/t of acid consumption. This rock covers approximately 40 per cent from phases 11 and 13.The final geomet model was calculated using a program that relates each geometallurgical unit with a specific copper recovery and acid consumption value. In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.

The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017. With the increasing use of ornamental rocks, mainly in civil construction, sundry problems were identified in relation to rocks cutting, such as efficiency in the cutting process and rock quality lumber. In recent years several composites have been developed to solve these problems. In this context, the study of the binomial matrix metal-diamond interaction is of paramount importance for the development of new composite materials to improve the efficiency of the cutting tool. The diamond impregnated matrix metal often reveals a reaction between the diamond surface and the matrix. Besides the mechanical connection, chemical reactions can sometimes occur. Therefore, this study aims to assess the achievement of diamond composites in the system Fe / Cu / Ni / Sn via powder metallurgy, with added CRB2. Analyzes have been performed to characterize chemical / physical and mechanical. The results have showed that addition of CRB2 promote significant changes in the properties of composites, especially in wear resistance and fracture toughness. Furthermore, the presence of the composite CRB2 causes a significant improvement in thermal stability.

ADEQUATE hardenability has long been recognized as one of the first requirements for producing desired mechanical properties in a heat-treated steel. Since the introduction of the Jominy end-quench test1 and the development of correlative information to expand its use, industry has had an effective measure of hardenability. Prediction and control of the hardenability have been made possible by Grossmann's principle2 for calculating hardenability from chemical composition; and Field's conversion3 from depth of half-martensite hardening to Rockwell C hardness has made the relation more quantitative. These developments have facilitated the design of new steels and the control of standard grades to the extent that it has been possible to establish tentative hardenability bands for some of the more commonly used alloy steels.4 As the depth of hardening of the Jominy test specimen is usually measured by Rockwell C hardness, it was considered that it should be possible to predict the hardness by a more direct calculation. It has been found that this can be accomplished by the addition of Rockwell C units proportional to the carbon and alloy content, grain size, and position in the Jominy test specimen. The calculation has been found to be fairly accurate, and because of its additive character is relatively simple to use. In principle the method of calculation is somewhat similar to the expressions developed by Herty, McBride, and Hollenback,5 Burns, Moore, and Archer,6 and Burns and Riegel.7 The calculation is started from a base that includes the effects of carbon content and position in the Jominy test speimen. Rockwell C units are added to the base in proportion to the alloy content and grain size. This sum represents the Rockwell C hardness up to the level at which a disproportionate increase of hardness is caused by the formation of martensite, and above this level an increment for martensite hardening is added. The effects of alloys are directly proportional to the amounts present and are independent of each other, the carbon content, and the position in the specimen. Furthermore, the factors for determining the martensite increment are dependent only on carbon content and are independent of cooling rate and alloy content. It is this absence of interrelation between the different factors that makes it possible to calculate the hardness and makes the method of calculation consistent with the principle that the character of the hardening reaction is governed primarily by carbon and that alloys exert their effect chiefly through control of the critical cooling rate. "The aim of this work was evaluation of the recovery of Zn and Fe of the EAFD added to the hot metal in the form of briquette at temperature of 1500°C. The EAFD was agglomerated by cold briquetting and introduced in the hot metal. This study utilized a bench-scale equipment to melt, during this process to kept a flow rate of inert gas above the bath. Were collected periodically metal samples and the samples were analyzed for determination of the content of total silicon and carbon by chemical analysis. Zinc oxide, zinc ferrite and other oxides were reduced and were volatized and collected by a cleaning system of dust (baghouse) located on top of the oven. More than 98% of iron were recovered from EAFD during the test. It was possible to produce a dust containing about 68% zinc by means of adding of EAFD.IntroductionIn the first semester of 2010, steel production was about 706 million tons, 27.9 % more than in the first half of 2009. Not a significantly increase if 2010 data is compared with the first semester of 2007 (only 7.2 % higher), before the world’s economic crises. Steel production is divided into two main routes. The first one, and most used, is the Basic Oxygen Furnace Process (BOF process), which in 2008 accounted for approximately 67.1 % of steel production. The second route is carried out in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) that in 2008 represented 30.6 % [1 ].Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a solid waste generated during the steel making process. After the systematic closure of Europe’s coalfields in the late twentieth century, the emphasis is now clearly on industry’s environmental legacy. One aspect of the latter is the longterm surface movement above abandoned coal mines. The analysis of satellite data shows that the subsidence lasts longer than generally assumed. However, a few years after the flooding of the abandoned underground coal mines, a new phenomenon was observed, i.e., the direction of the surface movement was reversed. The phase of upsidence has already lasted for several decades, and only future measurements will tell how long it continues. A key conclusion is that the regions with maximum subsidence do not necessarily correspond to the greatest upsidence. In other words, buildings and infrastructure are subjected to a different loading from this upsidence than during the subsidence phase. The longterm surface movements have an impact on vulnerable structures in the densely populated regions of the former deep coal mining areas in Europe. These movements create additional damage. This new knowledge is also relevant for mines that are still in operation or future mines that are planned.

Over the past several decades, the use of cement-based grouts using ultra fine cement as a replacement for portland cement has begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts used in permeation grouting. The amount of information currently available on grouts made with ultrafine cement is limited. The authors used a previously developed field testing program to perform additional tests to evaluate the permeation performance of portland and ultrafine cement-based grouts. For the first time, the 2003 testing program included an attempt to determine the 28 day compressive strength of the sand permeated by the grout.

A shaped charge is an explosive device used to focus detonation energy in a desired direction. Shaped charges have numerous applications in several industries such as oil extraction, weaponry and demolition. The focusing of the detonation energy is the result of the Munroe Effect, which greatly increases the penetration properties of the explosive due to a void in the explosive’s volume. The void in the explosive is lined with a metal substrate that becomes a super-heated projectile when the explosive is detonated. Additive Manufacturing (AM) can allow greater design freedom and geometric complexity for the liner portion of the shaped charge. Specifically, hierarchical structuring and functional grading can potentially provide greater velocity, directionality, and efficiency. By utilizing AM, the conventional use of shaped charges can be greatly expanded upon and may open new possibilities. In this work, selective laser melting (SLM) was used to explore different conical shaped charge (CSC) liners made out of stainless steel 304L. A series of liners were tested that had varying densities and were compared to conventional liners. The CSCs were filled with the high explosive Composition C-4 and detonated to evaluate performance. The blast events were recorded using break wire screens to calculate the velocity of the jet through steel target plates over a standoff of 6 times the charge diameter. A high-speed camera recorded the blast event to calculate the velocity of the jet through the air. The depth of penetration into the steel target plates was also used as a measurement of the effectiveness of the CSCs. The aim of this work is to show the potential for advanced shaped charges produced using SLM.

Several organic and inorganic substances are widely used to control deposit structure and morphology during the electroprocessing of copper. Methods for monitoring the levels of thiourea, glue and guar gum during electrorefining and electrowinning have been successfully developed under the trade names of Reatrol and CollaMat. Other instrumental methods have been developed for additives and decomposition products associated with the electroplating of copper and other metals. Generally, these methods have been found to be either insufficiently sensitive or lacking in the desired selectivity for some or all of the additives. These procedures have mostly employed DC techniques; i.e., cyclic voltammetry, Tafel analysis, etc. In this work, chronopotentiometry (CP) and AC voltammetry were used to examine the interaction of glue, guar gum, thiourea and chloride during the electroplating of copper onto a platinum electrode. In addition, the interactions between the additives have been explored. It was found that glue in pure electrolyte (H2S04 and CuS04 only) had no effect on the chronopotentiogram. Glue was only active if chloride ions were present. The addition of thiourea resulted in several different chronopotentiograms depending on the presence of either chloride or chloride and glue. Thiourea used in conjunction with glue and chloride showed a significant increase in the polarization during copper deposition when compared to the electrolyte containing only glue and chloride. The use of a modified channel electrode further increased the sensitivity of CP. The use of AC voltammetry was explored as a technique to monitor some of the additives. AC voltammograms have more spectral detail then their DC counterparts and it is possible to monitor some of the additives at very low concentrations with AC techniques.

The present project sought alternatives for this material through the Mining Lab Beginnings program, which was developed by Nexa in partnership with Escalab to find solutions for the company's highly complex challenges. Through the program, several solutions were evaluated, with additives for the construction market being the most prominent. Tests were conducted to confirm the efficiency of jarosite in the mixture that composes this material. With successful laboratory tests, the technology was tested on an industrial scale, where it also demonstrated its technical and economic viability. The project is now moving into the operational phase, demonstrating that circular economy is the best solution for disposed tailings.

Seeking to implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to improve the safety of their tailings facilities across the globe, mining companies are motivated to invest in new technologies to recover valuable minerals from tailings. One solution being evaluated is the use of magnetic separators to concentrate ultrafine tailings. However, this approach is energy intensive as it requires high magnetic fields to recover ultrafines, and usually results in low mass yields. Additives that modify pulp rheology and surface properties, or selective flocculate ultrafine particles, were tested to enhance the performance of magnetic separation. Promising results in laboratory scale testing different types of additives confirmed that it is possible to increase the mass yield, keeping the selectivity of this stage.
