O uso de ferramentas de simulação numérica para análise estrutural vem se expandindo nos últimos anos, sobretudo utilizando o método dos elementos finitos. Nesse trabalho são apresentados dois exemplos de otimização de projetos envolvendo componentes de mecanismos de válvula gaveta, realizados pela Magnesita Refratários S.A. Partindo da geometria inicial até o produto final, é analisado como o campo de tensões é adequado a valores admissíveis, conforme modificações de projeto são realizadas. Por fim, é demonstrada a importância desse tipo de estudo para alcançar maior confiabilidade e segurança em projetos mecânicos.

The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

This paper presents a study on the ability of the King stratification modelto describe density stratification patterns that are achieved under idealizedconditions. Tests were conducted in a batch jig using artificial particles inseven density classes. All particles in a density class had essentially thesame density, size, and shape. Tests were conducted for particle systemsinvolving from two to seven components. Good agreement was obtainedbetween measured and modelled data to an extent that gave strongendorsement of the mathematical appropriateness of the core equation inthe King model. Somewhat ambiguous results were found with regard toclaims about the independencies of the single experimentally-determinedparameter required by the model.

Laboratory tests were performed to explore the effects of frequency on the deformation property of rock salt subjected to cyclic loading under confining stress condition. A two-stage (transient and steady) evolution law of axial cumulative strain was obtained through cyclic stress-strain curves complied from the loci of minimum load of each cycle. The unloading modulus decreases with loading cycles/time as a negative exponential function. The damage of rock salt under cyclic loading is reflected by the degradation of elastic modulus. A unified damage evolution equation considering the effects of frequency and time was established based on the experimental results. A new creep damage model for rock salt was proposed by introducing the non-stationary modular components in Burgers creep equation according to the Lemaitre equivalent strain theory. Comparative study indicates that the new model can accurately describe the creep deformation and damage evolution of rock salt under different loading frequencies. This paper provides a more reasonable model and relevant mechanical parameters for the stability analysis of compressed-air storage cavern in the injection and withdrawal durations.

Currently, there are several open pit mines with production rates of about 200 000 tpd of ore that are reaching the end of their economic lives. In most cases, the remaining orebody extends to depths greater than 300 m below the pit limit, leaving hundreds of millions of tons of reserves that can only be recovered by means of an underground mining method. One such method used for mass production is block caving. This paper presents a ventilation system for a four-zone block cave mine operation developed on a footprint 1000 m wide and 1200 m long. The system is designed for a mine with a nominal production rate of 120 000 tpd of ore using diesel powered units on the production and reduction levels. It discusses the air quantity requirements for the worst case scenario, which is anticipated to occur five years after the mine has reached its full production capacity. Finally, it summarises the results of computer modelling exercises that were carried out to determine an economic ventilation infrastructure that includes shafts, drifts, main fans, and ventilation control devices.

A new high tensile strength, steel cable, that may be grouted into boreholes has been developed for use as rode reinforcement. The manufacturing technique produces a birdcage pattern in which the cross section varies along the length of the cable. The load transfer from cement grouts to birdcage cables has been demonstrated in laboratory tests to be better than that of standard 15.2 mm diameter seven wire cables. The manufacturing process also allows for a wide range of capacities which may be specified by design engineers. The various birdcage cable configurations have been applied as rock reinforcement in a number of Australian underground and surface mines.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE)–, Duplicate Sampling Analysis (DSA) and Segregation Free Analysis (SFA)–, are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody was calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to the power of 3. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for is shown to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry-preferred 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold-bearing ores the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the FSE greatly simplifies the characterization of gold ores, now requiring only the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications of the simplified equation for the heterogeneity test are that, provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.

A Vertical Floatation Melter (VFM) has been developed (sponsored by DOE) which simultaneously decoats and melts organic laden scrap in a single unit. Scrap aluminum is fed into the top of the VFM where it falls through a cone. Hot gases flow upwards through the cone, imposing a variable drag force on the scrap. Equilibrium is reached in which the scrap weight equals the drag force and the scrap becomes suspended. The gases strip off and vaporize the organics. Next, the scrap reaches a liquid state, taking on a more aerodynamic teardrop shape, allowing it to fall into a holding furnace. Heat transfer coefficients are 10 times higher than that of a conventional furnace, allowing rapid melting at a low gas temperature. Typical energy use is well under 2,324 joules/g (1,000 Btu/lbm) with a metal yield from 92 to 98%. This paper reports on the operation and data of a 453 kg/hr (1,000 pph) pilot-scale VFM.

For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That sub- ject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public atten- tion has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing com- modity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent f.11 1k

GOING west from Denver on Route 6, the direct road to Grand Junction, one gets the first glimpse of mining a few miles east of Denver near Idaho Springs where the workings of defunct gold mines are visible on the sides of mountains along the highway. One enterprising company is turning a profit by showing tourists through the mine and mill and then selling them gold samples on the way out. We have always known that mining people are ingenious, but this proves it. About five and a half hours fast driving west from Denver brings one to Rifle, Colo., which is the site of the oil shale mine, retorting plant, and refinery of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. As you drive up to the mine, you can see a portal high on the face of the cliff in front of you where the mine surface plant literally hangs by its toenails. Below, the retorting plant and refinery gleam in the sunlight. Up at the mine, Fred Wright will show you how the oil shale is extracted in two benches (a third bench would be used for commercial mining) by the room-and-pillar method. In mining the top level, an underground crew of thirteen men have been able to produce 1500 tons of shale in each eight-hour shift. To do this, the mine is thoroughly mechanized. Since the U. S. Metals Refining Co. works was established, around the turn of the century, near the town which is now called Carteret, N. J., it has grown to be a major producer of refined copper and the main source of that special brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper." Owing to the complex metallurgical problems arising from handling a variety of raw materials such as copper concentrate from Matahambre, Cuba, copper and brass scrap from the New York area, and domestic blister copper, the organization is geared from top management down through its 2000 employes to maintain a high degree of flexibility in plant operation. The Company is a subsidiary of The American Metal Co. Charges for the smelter furnaces, one reverberatory furnace and one blast furnace, are made up in. bedding bins so that they may be tailored to the production of a constant grade of blister copper. The reverberatory furnace smelts the .sulphide charge, which may be a blend of ten different materials but principally the Cuban concentrate, and the matte from the process is poured into a converter. This reverberatory is 80 by 20 ft, silica lined with a slag bottom, fired by pulverized coal, and continuously side-charged from the top by bottom-dump cars which keep the side walls covered. It produces a 40 to 50 per cent copper matte. The fuel-charge ratio is 4.35 tons of solid charge per ton of coal. The furnace has a capacity of 10,000 tons of charge per month and produces from 5000 to 6000 tons of slag per month which must be disposed of. About 5000 tons of converter slag is produced monthly and returned molten to the reverberatory furnace. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.

Spontaneous combustion of coal has been studied by laboratory techniques using an apparatus in a small-scale laboratory testing. Coal?s inherent characteristics can be measured using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Crossing Point Temperature (CPT) methods. The DTA curve obtained after testing is compared with actual inherent moisture and its effect on spontaneous combustion has been investigated. It has been found that the Wits-Ehac Index increases as the inherent moisture of the sample increases. Therefore it can be deduced that liability to spontaneous combustion increases with increased inherent moisture. In addition, volatiles have a catalytic affect on self heating immediately after the inherent moisture is reduced. This is identified as stage two in the thermogram. The inherent moisture has a cooling effect during the initial stages of testing and is visible in the DTA thermogram. In addition, while an increase in carbon content means an increase in Wits-Ehac Index value, an ash content decreases the likelihood of on spontaneous combustion. Proccesing plants currently have sophisticated regulation and control systems and there also systems of managment of the quality and laboratory variables, for the mine-plant transport managment, mineralogical extraction, characterization, maintenance managment were desgined to support specific operational business functions: to operate, maintain, control quality, manage the fleet, etc. The vision of systems dedicated to supporting specific business functions contradicts what is nowadays an integrated business operation, esenctially multidisciplinary and it which the managment and supervision process require access to heterogeneus information sources regarding their regarding their origin and managment system. The consecuence of ongoing pressure for operational excellence is the need of more "fine-lunning"of the processes must be adressed in a synchronized way. Hence, the need arises of restating the issue of operation and related information, for which a new conceptual and techonological focus is proposed aimed at the objetive of operational excellence.

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

An uneven gas distribution through the burden layers inside a blast furnace (BF) results in abnormal gas resistance or pressure changes. Rapid variations in the abnormal gas resistance will lead to the occurrence of channeling. A visualization technology mainly made of pressure distribution was developed to predict BF channeling phenomena in this study. The real-time data of BF shaft pressure was used to create a 3D visual model by neural network algorithms and 3D real-time BF pressure changes were observed. The root mean square deviation (RMSD) of the BF shaft pressure was used as an index to set up the predicting criteria of channeling occurrence with the opening of BF Annular Gap Element (AGE), and a predicting system based on the criteria was built. The two criteria for the channeling alarm are the RMSD of the BF shaft pressure (> 0.15 kg/cm2 ) at the upper two levels, and the AGE opening being greater than 60%. This system has been installed in the China Steel Corporation (CSC) BFs, and the test results showed that a prediction can be obtained 8 to 16 min ahead of channeling allowing sufficient time for the operator to adjust the BF operation in order to avoid the occurrence of channeling.

THE object of this paper is to bring to the attention of those members of the Institute who are interested in the subject, a method for the estimation of manganese, which has been frequently used in the laboratory of the Vulcan Steel Works during the last eight months, and which is deemed worthy of more general use. It is simply an adaptation of well-known processes, for the purpose of determining this element in pig iron and steel. In general, the method consists in precipitating the manganese as binoxide, dissolving in dilute sulphuric acid in the presence of an excess of a standardized solution of oxalic acid, and titrating the remainder of the oxalic acid left unoxidized with permanganate of potash. For this method, therefore,. two standardized solutions are needed, viz., a permanganate solution and an oxalic acid solution. The permanganate solution is made so that 1 c.c. is equivalent to 1 mgr. of iron. By using so weak a solution and keeping the bulk of the solution to be titrated down to 75 c.c. or a little less, the accuracy of the process is greatly increased, since the final reaction is almost if not quite as sharp as if a stronger solution were used. The oxalic acid' may be of almost any strength, but if made so that 1 c.c. requires 3 c.c. of the permanganate to oxidize it, it will auswer well. The process is then, as follows : from 1 to 2 grams of pig iron or steel are dissolved in 40 to 50 c.c. of concentrated nitric acid with the aid of heat. As soon as solution is effected, in the case of steel, add gradually and cautiously, the solution being kept boiling, sufficient pulverized chlorate of potash to precipitate the manganese as binoxide. Two grams will be a great abundance. In the me of pig iron, first remove the carbon and silica by filtering the solution through asbestos and washing with concentrated nitric acid. Filter the strong acid solution in which the binoxide has been precipitated, through asbestos with the aid. of the filter pump. When it has entirely passed through wash well with water. Blow the contents: of the funnel into the beaker in which the precipitation was made and rinse the funnel with a little water.

Thunder Basin Coal Company has two mines located in the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. 60-90 km southeast of Gillette, Wyoming. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960's. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping, but environmental considerations during the mid-1970's made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lying with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age and the deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21 m thick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

FROM the time of its organization down to 1917, a period of more than eighty years, Phelps, Dodge & Co. was seldom involved in what could be called a major labor difficulty. Behind this remarkable record lay both a philosophy and its practical application. The philosophy was an attitude toward society called the Golden Rule. That philosophy had been a living principle in the lives of the founders of the company, Anson Phelps, Daniel James, and William E. Dodge. Their successors, William E. Dodge, Jr., and Daniel Willis James, accepted the same philosophy. Dr. James Douglas governed his life by it. All of these men and their families had given tangible expression to that conviction in benefactions of great magnitude and variety-churches, hospitals, educational institutions, libraries, missionary undertakings, and other organizations for human betterment, such as the Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations, and the development of model communities about their mills and factories.
