Open pit slope design has conventionally been effected as a bottom-up function utilizing available geotechnical information. This results in a decision criterion based on probability of failure and factor of Safety with a risk assessment being carried out on the proposed design slopes. The design approach recommended reverses the process using fault event tree decision methodology. The consequences of this approach are that acceptable risk criteria have to be determined by mine owners. Slopes are then designed by the technical staff to achieve these corporate goals. Benefits that arise from the process are that the owners take a proactive decision on the risk-benefit relationship allowing the technical staff to optimize the geotechnical exploration programme and design.

A constitutive model for rock interfaces based on the principles of static fatigue is proposed. The model is applicable to weak rock or joints with cohesion. Friction and dilation are decreased as plastic work increases. At equilibrium, the creep time increases by one time-step interval, and interface cohesion at each node decreases according to a power function. A constant-load, direct-shear simulation showed that the model is cap- able of mimicking constant-rate and tertiary creep and predicting failure. Tests on core from a coal mine showed constant-rate and, sometimes, tertiary creep, but also weak transitory creep. The cohesion deterioration function may need modification to simulate primary-phase creep. If model parameters are known for a site, the model can predict the onset of tertiary creep and failure. Such predictions can help engineers make better entry design and support decisions, which will reduce the likelihood of roof falls and increase safety for underground miners.

This paper highlights the agricultural sector's primary concerns with mining in New Zealand: the information gap, land rehabilitation and compensation. It suggests how these issues can be resolved between the competing land uses in the interests of New Zealand.

An investigation was male of ground response to pillar retreat mining in a 1.7 meter thick seam at 108 meter depth at a site in northern West Virginia. This paper describes mining-related stress changes and movements at nine level, displacements within the overburden, ground surface subsidence and groundwater level variations. Subsidence approached 40 per cent of the nine height ad continued more than a year after mining. Water levels declined la certain deep-lying strata.

The Bureau of Mines estimated reclamation costs for 13 surface coal mines in nine States west of the Missisisppi River. With the exception of the Pacific Coast coal province, at least one mine in each of the western coal provinces was studied. Cost estimates were, made using standard estimating procedures from data obtained from company records, interviews with industry personnel, and onsite observations. Estimated costs are presented in four categories which represent the four phases of mined-land reclamation: (1) Design, engineering, and overhead; (2) bond and permit fees; (3) backfilling and grading; and (4) revegetation. Estimated costs as of the first quarter of 1976 are expressed as averages and ranges in terms of per acre, per ton of coal produced, and per million Btu. Total reclamation costs ranged from $860 to $7,200 per acre, from 6 to 84 cents per ton, and from 4 to 35.3 mills per million Btu. A mine in the Northern Great Plains coal province (Region D) showed the highest per acre cost whereas mines in part of the western region of the Interior coal province (Region A) experienced the greatest per ton and per million Btu cost. The high cost of reclamation in the Western United States is reflected in the backfill in and grading category, particularly in the cost of topsoil removal and subsequent replacement as required by individual State reclamation regulations.

The alluvial deposits of the Pacific Northwest have been investigated and worked with varying degrees of intensity since about the middle of the 19th century. Earlier efforts, of course, were centered about the placer-gold content of the deposits; later, the Oregon beach sands were exploited for their chrome content, and, still more recently, deposits in Idaho were worked for their content of monazite, a rare-earth mineral which also contains significant quantities of thorium. The composition of alluvial deposits seems to depend mainly upon the nature of the source rock from which the detrital material was derived and upon the resistance of the individual mineral grains to the agencies of weathering and transportation. The processes of crushing and concentration used in ore dressing are applied in a leisurely but nonetheless effective manner when exposed rock masses are eroded by natural forces. Weathering effects a continuous disintegration and chemical decomposition, wherein resistant minerals are set free as individual grains and new minerals are formed. Erosion carries these detrital products down the slopes into natural waterways, where a mechanical separation of heavy particles from light is accomplished by the running water. The accumulation of such resistant, heavy particles through the ages has resulted in formation of the black-sand deposits. In addition to the associated gangue minerals, heavy sand deposits in the Pacific Northwest may contain the following constituents of possible economic value: Gold, platinum, chromite, ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, monazite, columbite-tantalite, and radioactive blacks.

"Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016. NO new ferrous alloys have been produced in the last five or six years that are as outstanding contributions to civilization as were the high-speed steels of the early part of the century or the stainless steels announced at the close of the World War. There have been, however, many developments of major importance having to do either with modifications of existing alloys or with new methods of treatment of older iron or steel alloys. Only a limited number of these new developments can be discussed and their selection does not necessarily imply that these are the most important but merely that they are of general interest rather than perhaps of greater importance in highly specialized fields.

An experimental and numerical study was conducted on the geomechanical behaviour of oil sands during penetration tests in which a steel wedge with an apex angle of either 20 degrees or 30 degrees was forced into compacted oil sands. The boundary conditions simulated in the laboratory tests are similar to shovel penetration into oil sands. The objective of the laboratory tests was to measure the force required to push a steel wedge into compacted oil sands. A wedge penetration test differs from conventional triaxial tests in that much more shear is generated. The laboratory data was needed to improve calibration of micro-mechanical input parameters for a two-dimensional discrete element model of oil sands constructed with Particle Flow Code (PFC). Initial model calibration was performed with triaxial test data and then a PFC model of the wedge penetration test was constructed. The measured force-displacement behaviour of the steel wedge was compared with PFC modelling results. It was found that different combinations of PFC particle and bond parameters could equally well replicate the laboratory triaxial compression data for bitumen-rich oil sands. When the wedge model was run, it was found that the resulting force required to penetrate the wedge into the oil sands was about four to six times higher than that measured. This clearly indicates that further research is required to improve the predictive capability of PFC models of oil sands.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.

Injuries due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are not uncommon in heavy industry like mining. Researchers acknowledged that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors is the chief causative factor in the development ofWMSDs. The aim of this study was to perform an ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among surface mine workers in India. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to collect subjective response from 500 workers. A stratified random sampling method according to surface mining work activity type was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. A response rate of 85% was obtained out of 500 targeted groups. TheWMSDs prevalence for the 12-month period was estimated to be 44.23%. The mean and standard deviation of workers’ age were 41.31and 8.927, respectively. The study has shown that the operators of dumpers, dozers, and graders along with electricians were found to be the most susceptible to developWMSD problems. Among the most affected body parts, back disorder reported the highest. Further, it was found that working with static posture over the longer duration has a significant association with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.020) and bouncing and jarring has also significantly associated with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.023). Similarly, a significant association was found between repetitive work and neck pain (with p = 0.016). The study depicted a significant association between ergonomic hazards and WMSDs, like working with prolonged static posture, bouncing and jarring, and repetitive work.

For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

Os métodos convencionais e os mais recentes de proteção contra a corrosão (revestimentos metálicos aplicados por eletrodeposição, deposição química (electroless), deposição química em fase vapor, deposição física de vapor e aplicação de tintas) empregados paras as ligas de aço-carbono também são empregados para as ligas à base de TR-Fe-B. Essa proteção torna-se necessária, uma vez que essas ligas possuem microestrutura muito mais complexa que as dos aços-carbono e apresentam em sua composição metais de terras raras os quais são intrinsicamente susceptíveis à corrosão. Os revestimentos utilizados são, no geral, constituídos de metais mais nobres do que as ligas, sendo por isso de extrema importância que sejam mantidos íntegros durante o manuseio individual dos ímãs e durante a sua montagem, ou, o posicionamento nos diversos dispositivos em que eles são empregados atualmente. O rompimento do revestimento implicará a diminuição da vida útil dos dispositivos.

This paper attempts to model long-term production scheduling problems by chance constrained binary integer programming in a stochastic environment. This stochastic model is set up to account for ore block grade uncertainty. The probability distribution function of grade in each block is used as a stochastic input to the optimization model. This distribution function in each block should be determined using a Geostatistical Simulation approach. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are then achieved, which are in the form of nonlinear in binary variables. A confidence level at which it is desired that the uncertain constraints holds, is specified in each scheduling period. Rather than the previous risk-based model, this formulation will yield schedules with a high chance of achieving planned production targets while maximizes the expectation of net present value and minimizing the variance function simultaneously. Using this method, the grade uncertainty is integrated explicitly into the optimization process.

The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural- gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas, in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and In solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil- bearing horizons.

Determining the cutability and mechanical properties of rocks is vital for the feasibility studies of a mine or tunnel projects. Many scientists have investigated the correlation between these parameters in order to predict specific energy (SE) and other important rock cutability properties for many years. On the other hand, textural properties of rocks have been quantified in detail by Howarth and Rowlands (1987). Hence, it was possible to correlate mechanical and textural properties of rocks by using a parameter known as the texture coefficient (TC). The main objective of this study was to use the test results taken from a research project carried out by Bilgin and Shahrair1tocorrelate the mechanical and cutability properties of rocks with textural properties of rocks. For this purpose, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), uniaxial tensile strength (UTS), cone indent or (CI),point load index (PLI), unit volume weight (?), porosity, SE, and normal and cutting force values, were correlated with textural properties of rocks. Hence it was possible to make illuminating interpretations about the relationships between the mechanical and cutability with the textural properties of rocks. The Siamese mining lew, which is cited as "The Sian Mining Act, 2461 (1919)," was enacted February 14, B. E. 2461 (A. D. 1919), corresponding to the ninth year of His Majesty's reign. This act replaces the Sian Mining Act of 1901 and repeals all edicts, decrees, laws, rules, and local customs relating to mining the terms of which are inconsistent with the new law. It shall in- clude all subsequent alterations or additions, as well as all rules issued by the Minister (of Land and Agriculture) already in force or to be brought into force publication in the Government Gazette to be deemed sufficient notice of any modifications or alterations. (Art. 1, 2, 5, 83, and 85.) Legislation passed recently amending certain provisions of the mining law for the purpose of controlling the sale of minerals is the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, given August 21, 1931 (7th year of the present reign), which repeals provisions of the mining act, B. 3. 2461, and also all rules and regula- tions relating to mining that are inconsistent with the amending ect. Under article 25 of the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, ministeriel regulations (of the Minister of Agriculture) were issued August 21, 1931. The project investigated regional impacts of mining on the ground water system of the Powder River Basin by: 1) establishment of a regional ground water monitoring network. and 2)development at a set pit digital computer models to simulate ground water flow and quality, ground water contributions to surface water flow and quality (i.e., baseflow), and watershed run-off and recharge. Over 100 wells were monitored for physical and chemical parameters. Data were used as input to the models and for the development of a comprehensive data base. The basin was modeled on a regional and subregional scale using a finite -difference model employing an alternating difference technique. Two water-shed models were evaluated fur their ability to provide runoff and recharge inputs to the basic ground water model. Application of the regional and subregional models using conservative mining scenarios showed that drawdowns may extend west from the mines as far as ten miles but that impacts would be insignificant on a regional scale. The watershed model could be effectively applied to small watersheds only.
