This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

The chief source of metallic iron for steelmaking in India, even today, as it is in most part of the world, is through blast furnace (BF) route. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

The feasibility of using the nucleation properties of combustion generated particulates for the identification of their sources was investigated, using the Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Spectrometer. The Investigated materials included coal, wood, belt materials, electrical insulation, brattice cloth, and diesel exhaust. The materials were heated In an oven using filtered air flow, and their time, temperature, and the critical supersaturation spectrum of condensation nuclei (also referred to as the CCN spectrum) produced by the combusting material were recorded. Some data was obtained on a typical metal-mine background containing blasting products. The data was processed and analyzed In an attempt to specify parameters and limits that would allow the identification of the combustion sources. It appears that under controlled test conditions It Is possible to Identify the source on the basis of data derived from the CCN spectrum. More general use of the Idea for fire detection under uncontrolled practical circumstances in an actual mining environment does have potential but would require further research.

[For reasons well known to Mining Engineers, fine grinding in the wet form is quite universal inn plants engaged in the traction of metallic values from crude ore In the processing, of non-metallic and industrial minerals, however, fine grinding in dry form is the more common method. The crude materials generally contain less moisture than required for wet grinding, and the products are usually marketed or used in the dry form, most of them as powders. To grind wet would therefore entail the addition of water and the expense for drying the product, which is not justified. The event is scheduled for March 29 through April 4 of next year at the New Munich Trade Fair Center in Munich, Germany. For the first time, bauma will feature an exhibition area dedicated to mining equipment and technology. Also for the first time, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will be a partner region of bauma.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

"Bubble surface area flux (Sb) is the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-sectional area of flotation machine. The units are: (m2 bubble surface/s)/(m2 cell) or s -1. For bubbles of mean size db (m), s b = 6-Qg/A db where Qg is the gas rate (m3/s), and A the cell cross-section (m'). This parameter is now receiving wide attention as the possible key machine variable in flotation diagnosis and modelling. The concept is described and the potential use of sb is illustrated by work on flotation columns and mechanical cells. In column flotation of recycled paper, the dependence of ink recovery on s b was the same regardless of size of column or type of sparger. In mechanical cells, it has been established that the rate constant is related to Sb independent of impeller type.The use of s b is limited by the problem of measurement, primarily that of estimating db. A prototype probe designed to estimate db (and hence sb) based on conductivity measurements is described. Exploratory work with the probe in a mechanical cell suggests the promise of making estimation of s b routine.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is the result of interaction among variables associated with the feed particles, chemistry and the machine (flotation cell). Trying to isolate the effects of each aids in process diagnosis and is at the centre of attempts to model flotation. The machine variables that have been investigated include the air flow number, the power number and specific power (Harris, 1976). None have survived as the basis for predicting flotation response perhaps because they did not include directly the properties of the bubble swarm (or dispersion). Recently, Gorain (1 997) explored the relationship between the flotation rate constant and various ""gas dispersion"" parameters notably: superficial air rate (Jg = Qg/A, where Qg is the volumetric gas rate and A is cross-sectional area of cell), bubble size (db), gas holdup (Eg, i.e., the volumetric fraction of a cell occupied by gas) and bubble surface area flux (sb = 6.Jg/db). Of them all, Gorain et al. (1997) conclude that the latter, the surface area flux, correlated best with the flotation rate constant. This concept was adopted from column flotation where it was used to estimate, among other factors, the maximum amount of gas that could be injected (Finch and Dobby), 1990). Let's start by reviewing the concept. Following that some examples of where the concept has been applied will be described to illustrate the current interest and finally we will consider how to measure the surface area flux."

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

A series of stemming confinement tests were conducted at a test site near Vernal, Utah. The purpose of the study was to determine the relative performance of various stemming enhancement “plugs”, stem types and loading configurations. The stemming performance was quantified in terms of: . Stem confinement time . Stem ejection velocity . Ground swell velocity . Ground vibration . Air blast . Crater formation Of primary interest was the performance of a new spherical stemming enhancement plug. The initial findings indicate that the hard plastic spheres improved blast performance when used appropriately. Their ability to improve blast performance is reduced when used in over confined or severely underconfined conditions. The study also evaluated the effects of air decking on stemming confinement and explosive performance.

Since its commercialization thirty years ago, the Recoflo® short bed ion exchange process has been extensively utilized for the recovery of a wide variety of acids and metal salts. In addition to a reduction in resin bed height from 200 cm to 300 cm to 15 cm to 60 cm, the process has a number of features such as utilization of fine mesh resins in a compressed bed which together make it ideal for a number of applications. The process has been extensively exploited, for example, in the metal finishing industry for recovery of valuable chemicals from electroplating, anodizing, etching and pickling wastes. More recently, it has also been applied in the primary metals industry for purification of copper electrolytes and metals recovery from leachates. The paper discusses several of these applications and some of the issues that were found to be key to their success.

"INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the Phase relations of fluids produced from combination wells 4/ at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of production from natural reservoirs is essential to efficient recovery and refining practice. An accurate sample of the fluid from such wells may be prepared by mixing (in the proportions of the measured gas:liquid ratio) gas and liquid taken from the separator conditions of steady flow; and physical properties of the sample, at significant pressures and temperatures, may be determined with suitable laboratory apparatus for use in the solution of engineering problems. The results of study of sample so obtained and of mixtures of gas and liquid from the separator combined in other proportions are presented in this report. Attention was given in the study to the relationship between the physical properties of what may be regarded as the constituent materials - the gas and liquid taken from the separator - and the properties of mixtures of these constituents. Data obtained for the complete range of mixture Proportions are expected to provide a reference scale for the study of other combination-well fluids produced at different liquid:gas ratios."

The Bureau of Mines, under a Cooperative Agreement with the Bear Coal Company, Somerset, Colorado, conducted a large scale evaluation of the effect of time lapse on roof stability. Time lapse in this study is the interval between exposure and permanent support of the mine roof. The study indicates that time lapse is not a critical factor in roof stability provided permanent support is installed before catastrophic failure begins. Concurrently with the time lapse study, investigations were made of stress distribution around resin-grouted bolts, the regional stress field, and anomalous geologic conditions. The behavior of the resin-grouted bolts, at least in the Bear mine, appears to fit the Coulomb-Navier Theory. Geologic conditions are primary factors in trends of roof stability that extend across the mine.

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. Detailed measurements made at a test section adjacent to a deep braced cut and other published data are combined to illustrate the limitations of the common methods of predicting movements associated with excavations in soft to medium clay. While past performance data can be used to estimate expected responses before construction in many cases, actual wall and soil deformations throughout construction can only be estimated using finite element procedures. Success of such analyses depends equally upon considering all aspects of construction that induce strains in adjacent soil, such as wall installation, excavation and bracing sequence, and time, and adequately modeling soil stress-strain behavior. Even when these two criteria are met, soil deformations can not be predicted adequately when strain levels exceed those that produce peak shear stress.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines study indicates over 200 million yd3 (153 million m3) of cinder resources occur in the Mount Washington Wilderness. No future demand for the deposits is anticipated. Based upon the geologic environment, the area is considered favorable for discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Mount Washington Wilderness, located about 32 mi (51 km) west of Bend, Oregon, contains 46,655 acres (18,881 ha) (fig. 1). A 6,300-acre (2,550-ha) addition on the northeast and east boundaries has been proposed by the Forest Service under RARE II. The U.S. Geological Survey made regional geological, geophysical, and geochemical surveys, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined, analyzed, and evaluated the economic potential of prospects and commercially important mineral resources.

The Bureau of Mines conducted large-scale laboratory copper ore leaching tests to enable improving copper recovery from large dump-leaching operations. This was done by comparing leaching progress when copper was recovered from recycled leach liquor either by cementation or by solvent extraction. Copper was leached from 7-ton ore samples at room temperature using pH 2 ferric sulfate solutions. With are samples containing 11 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, no marked advantage in using either of the copper recovery methods was evident after 416 days of leaching. With ore containing 32 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, solvent extraction of copper was advantageous in that 60 percent of the copper was extracted after 568 days, whereas only 48 percent of the copper was extracted when cementation was used. Less acid was consumed during leaching when solvent extraction, rather than cementation, was used for copper recovery. Iron, contributed by cementation with scrap iron, plugged the ore bed containing 32 percent fines.

EXPERIMENTAL work on the properties of high-purity alloys of the copper-manganese-zinc system has necessarily required extensive metallographic work to determine the equilibrium conditions in this system. Previous work on these alloys is fragmentary and, unfortunately, based on alloys made with impure grades of manganese, thus introducing significant amounts of iron, silicon, aluminum and carbon. Since these elements are known to affect equilibrium conditions, it became desirable to re-examine these alloys made from the pure metals. The alpha solid solution field was of particular interest and, therefore, was chosen for the initial work, which was outlined to determine the composition limits of this field. PREVIOUS WORK Heusler1 conducted an extensive survey of the liquid-solid regions of this system and also made an estimate of the solid-phase boundaries at 340°C. The pertinent part of his diagram is given in Fig. I, but it is of limited usefulness, since it applied to a single temperature only and is based on impure alloys under admittedly nonequilibrium conditions. Bauer and Hansen,2 likewise working with impure alloys, have determined the phase boundaries for alphabeta brasses containing small amounts of manganese and indicate an increase in the extent of the alpha field with increasing manganese. This is not in accordance with Heusler or with data obtained on pure alloys.3 They also described a third constituent precipitating in the alpha plus beta field below 350° to 400°C. but did not identify this constituent. Guillet4 and Heike and Ledibur5 have also noted this precipitate Each of these investigators recognized that impurities present in the manganese could and did have an effect on the structure and properties of their alloys. Corson6 in particular pointed out the hardening effects of silicon, aluminum, and carbon in copper-manganese alloys and Heusler reported that his alloys containing more than 25 per cent manganese were extremely brittle. In all probability this brittleness was due to the impurities present. This early work, therefore, should be taken as a general guide for preliminary studies only, and high-purity alloys may be expected to produce different results. The work of the Bureau of Mines laboratories with electrolytic manganese has been briefly summarized by Dean7 but includes only a short section on this system. Later work3 outlined a limited portion of the alpha field in the neighborhood of 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, and 25 per cent zinc. The present work was under-

Keywords: Furnace, decommissioning, care and maintenance, re-start, funding, nickel Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) operates two nickel mines, and treats concentrates from these mines as well as toll concentrates from the region around its Bindura Smelter and Refinery (BSR) complex. At the smelter, concentrates of at least 5% nickel content are blended and dried to 4% moisture in a coal-fired rotary kiln. Matte smelting of concentrate is carried out in a six-in-line electric arc furnace, where the furnace slag is granulated and discarded. Furnace matte is transferred via ladles into Peirce-Smith converters, where, after granulation, a leach alloy containing 68%Ni, 20%Cu, and 6%S is produced. Converter slag is recycled via the matte-smelting furnace. The onset of the global economic recession towards the end of 2008 resulted in a collapse of metal prices, worsening the local situation that was already marred by unfavourable macro-economic conditions in Zimbabwe. As a result, BNC mines were put on care and maintenance in November 2008, followed by Bindura Smelter and Refinery in February and March 2009 respectively. The business environment has since changed, and BNC is getting ready to re-start the plant. This paper describes the decommissioning of the Bindura furnace, asset preservation during the care and maintenance programme in the past two years, and preparation for starting up of the Bindura smelter in the near future.
