Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

Native asphalt was produced in 1981 by five companies in three States, Alabama, Texas, and Utah. Texas was the leading State in production of native asphalt. Total production increased in 1981 to 1.26 million tons, while value increased 10.5% to $27.7 million. Bituminous limestone, used primarily for street and road repair, was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co., both in Uvalde County, Tex., and Southern Stone Co., Colbert County, Ala. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co., Uinta County, Utah, and Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp., Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

[ ] A period of heavy rains caused the river Adda to flood parts of the Valtellina, one of the Alpine valleys of Northern Italy. The exceptionally high waters put under considerable strain the whole system of embankments and levees controlling the river and protecting the adjacent towns and lands. In some places the water breached and washed away the embankments, submerging large tracts of cultivated land, buildings, roads and railway tracks. The town of Talamona, in the lower Valtellina, was hit particularly hard: in its proximity the river overrun and then washed away 300 m (1,000 ft) of embankment (see vicinity map, fig. 2), depositing large amounts of riverbed debris onto over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of fertile land.

This report describes the development of skip and guide desings for vertical shafts in deep vein mines. Skip and guide systems for bottom dump skips are identified as being used in current practice. Mine visits were made to obtain current information on the needs and problems of operating mines. Methods of structural and mechanical analysis of skip bodies and bails are outlined. A dynamic computer model was written to find the dynamic interaction between skips and guides for guides with geometric misalinements. A materials evaluation section identifies currentavailable and applicable materials that can be used effectively for new skip construction. Guide materials are also presented. Analysis includes the economies resulting from streamlined buntons and from low skip payload ratios. Selection of materials is based on strength, abra¬sion and corrosion resistance. Design requirements related to the shaft environment are presented. Consideration for the selection of guides and buntons is also given. Conceptual design includes the concept of cylindrical skips, center-seeking guide rollers, and asymmetric bail design to decrease dynamic interaction. An outline for field tests is presented. Future research areas are: testing, guide geometry measure¬ment, advanced suspension, dynamics, and structural configurations.

There have been major changes in the makeup and nature of the uranium exploration industry in recent years. Significant price increases precipitated an increase in exploration activity-according to the Department of Energy, exploratory drilling in 1977, by 140 companies, was almost 8 million m (26 million ft). This represents a 37% increase over the prior year's drilling. Projections for 1978 indicate at least 9 million m (30 million ft) of exploratory holes will be drilled in the US. Exploration expenditures in 1979, including land acquisition, drilling, and other costs, were estimated by DOE at over $236 million. Domestic expenditures for 1978 are estimated at over $250 million.

Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

The key questions about fault reactivation in shales concern the potential enhanced fluid displacement through a previously low-permeability aseismic shale formation. Here we selected a critically-stressed fault cross-cutting the underground research facility of Tournemire (France) which is located in Toarcian shales. Several inclined boreholes were drilled across the 8.5 m thick fault zone characterized by a fractured damage zone (FDZ) and a central 2.4 m thick complex core (FC) made of multiple shear bands with gouge intercalated with highly fractured lenses. The fault was pressurized using a straddle packer system defining a 2.4m long injection chamber normal to the fault surface. Three fault zone intervals were tested, two in the fault damage zone and one in the fault core. A three-dimensional displacement sensor set in the chamber allowed continuous synchronous coupled monitoring of fault movements, injection pressure and flow rate. An anticlockwise 0.22-to-0.05 mm fault slip was captured associated with a 10-to-100 hydraulic aperture increase of the fault. Preliminary analyses of the experiments show that leakage in the fault zone is controlled by strength and stress magnitude contrasts between the fault core and the fault damage zone. Fault damage zone discontinuities display a much higher peak static friction angle than the fault core shear zones, respectively of 34 and 22° that could be related to complex interactions between healing and sealing processes. Fault core leakage is much more dependent on strain than on effective stress variations. Discontinuous, pulse-like leakage, develops following complex failure processes that may simultaneously take place in the gouge zones and along the large pre-existing discontinuities. Such results may be of importance in evaluating fault seal integrity in oil and gas exploration, production or CO2 storage or underground excavations monitoring.

"Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. Thirty mines and prospects were studied; 22 are within the Dolus Lakes RARE II area. Three properties within the area and one adjacent to it were determined to have indicated or inferred gold, silver, or molybdenum resources (fig. 1 and table 1) associated with quartz veins and shear zones or quartz-pyrite stockworks in granodiorite. Five other properties in the area and three just outside have potential for the discovery of gold and silver resources. Minor amounts of very fine-grained placer gold are in glacial outwash in and near the area. The John G. Carlisle Mine (fig. 1, no. 9) produced 120 oz (3.7 kg) of gold between 1897-1899. The Independence Mine produced 481 oz (15 kg) gold, 197 oz (6.1 kg) silver, and 189 lb (86 kg) of copper between 1926 and 1935. These mines are adjacent to the study area's northern boundary.

Representative samples of the hydrothermal vein deposits of the bulk complex sulphide ore deposit, 10 km south of Ishiagu, in Ebonyin State, South Eastern part of Nigeria were collected from two small scale mining companies. The samples were mixed and successively crushed in a jaw crusher and cone crusher, and ground in a rod mill. Characterization was carried out with SEM, EDX, XRD, XRF and ICP-OES. Mineralogical analysis revealed the presence of sphalerite, galena, siderite, pyrite, quartz and chalcopyrite. X-ray Diffractometry showed that sphalerite mineral in the ore occurs as sphalerite ferrous with varied percentage of Zn and Fe within the various sizes while chalcopyrite occurs as a chalcopyrite group mineral with chemical formula Cu2MnSnS4. Results of the elemental analysis showed variations in elemental composition within the different sizes.

This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. "The need for production of a competent fill was recognized early by the project partners. Consequently, a 4000 Ud paste fill plant was constructed and commissioned in early August 1994.In order to fine tune the process without risk to the underground workings, a closed pumping loop was devised on surface. After two months of this exercise, the first underground slope was filled according to specifications obtained from the pilot plant trials.This paper will focus on the operational problems encountered and the solutions adopted so far, and on a comparison between expected and actual fill production and characteristics.RésuméLa nécessité de produire un remblai de propriétés mécaniques suffisantes a été rapidement reconnue par les partenaires du projet. "SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. In addition, the methodology of entering into contract negotiations with the objective of establishing a fair and sustainable relationship is discussed.IntroductionOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Surface mining, for example, may use contractors to conduct drilling and blasting operations or load and haul operations. Common surface operations such as mineral beneficiation, waste disposal, security, and product transport may also be outsourced to contractors.Many companies have a business model that utilizes contractors for the entire mining cycle, maintaining a small head office to provide direction and control. The difficulty with this option is that often mining companies will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the implications."

Not too many years ago, mining was in one of its cyclic down-sides. This forced mining companies into some innovative thinking to bring down the costs of production. And they have. Mining equipment and processing plants have become more efficient, mostly due to technological advances. The mining industry is now in a boom period, one that some analysts believe can sustain itself. But even with higher commodity prices, sky-rocketing energy costs and the costs associated with environmental and reclamation regulations have not allowed all mines to reach their full profitability potential.

Two DFI committees independently organized two complimentary panel sessions for the recent American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Geo- Risk 2023 "Advances in Theory and Innovation in Practice" Conference in Arlington, Virginia, July 23-26. The Geo- Institute (GI) specialty conference welcomed more than 200 professionals and students interested in risk from around the world to the Washington, D.C., area for three full days of plenary keynote lectures, papers and no-paper sessions. The GI Risk Assessment and Management Technical Committee organized the event, which is the third in a series planned on a 6-year cycle. The previous two events were in 2011 in Atlanta and 2017 in Denver.

An hydraulic-powered reel system to minimize peak tension transients in shuttle car trailing cables has been theoretically designed and analyzed using a computer. A single spring-loaded take-up sheave stores or gives up cable to maintain tension within specified limits. Controls have been incorporated to shut down the vehicle before all cable is removed from the reel and to de-energize the cable in the event of a reel/cable jam. Full-scale hardware configuration drawings sufficient for manufacture of a test system have been completed.

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines, describing mining methods and performance at individual mining operations throughout the United States. The objective of these papers is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating reliable technological information on mining methods, practices, and performance. Limestone deposits in Iowa are extensive and reserves are large. Most of the past production came from the eastern third of the state, although over half of the counties in the state have produced, or are now producing limestone. The stone is used as aggregate, road metal, agricultural lime, riprap, fluxing stone, railroad ballast, and in the manufacture of cement and lime.

The objective of this study was to categorize mining operations in the stone, and sand and gravel industries into areas of similar ground control functions and define initial factors affecting operational safety in each area, by means of utilizing publicly available data, telephone interviews and on site observations. The findings and recommendations presented in this report are based on the information collected during the two phases of the project. They also contain, in part, the collective qualitative opinion of the operators with respect to government rules and regulations on ground control safety and the implementation of these rules and regulations by government inspectors.
