Diesel-powered haulage equipment has recently been tested and approved for permissibility by the Bureau of Mines for use in mining in the United States. Achievement of this advance in safety involved extensive studies, both in the testing station (2, 3, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27)3/ and in the field 1, 4, 13, 30), of the operating characteristics of diesel engines in relation to the toe of such engines underground. The results of these studies formed the basis for establishing the requirements that should be met by diesel-powered haulage equipment approved for permissibility. Considerable interest has been manifested in the development of diesel-powered haulage equipment fur mines. The purpose of this paper is to retrace briefly the course of this development and to answer such questions as: What is the history of the use of diesel engines underground? Why has the Bureau of Mines been interested in the development of diesel-powered haulage equipment for use in mines?

The widely employed IPCC models for the release of methane from underground coalmining operations are reviewed, and put in the context of the South African National Communication on greenhouse gas emissions. Then attempts to calibrate the model via measurements on South African coalmines are described. These attempts failed because it rapidly became clear that the IPCC model, involving methane adsorbed by the coal and released (a) by the depressurization of the strata caused by mining, (b) from the broken coal and (c) from coal remaining in roof, floor, pillars or goaf after mining, was not valid. Instead, measurements showed that the methane release was very variable, sporadically falling to zero. Carbon dioxide concentrations were monitored at the same time as methane, and followed methane concentrations. An alternative model was developed, in which methane was largely displaced from the coal and held in fissures, cleats and pores, which, when intersected by mining, released methane into the ventilation stream. In a key test of this hypothesis, methane concentrations around a continuous miner were monitored both during operation and after shutdown. Even during operation, methane became undetectable. It is hypothesized that heating of the South African coal-seams during the emplacement of the igneous dykes that cut so many of the seams caused displacement of the methane from the coal into the pores. This fissure-held methane, or free methane, is released rapidly once a pathway through the coal into the mine atmosphere is established. In contrast, methane adsorbed in the coal, and measured as the seam gas, desorbs relatively slowly. Measurements suggest that on average about 50%of the adsorbed methane is lost one day after mining. By that time, the coal will have left the mine, so that the remaining seam gas will be released to the atmosphere outside the mine. Attempts to measure methane emissions from surface coal-mining operations showed very little detectable methane. Coal from surface operations, which was milled and exposed to atmosphere, adsorbed gas from the air. It is concluded that methane release from surface operations is probably less than 3Gg/a. It is estimated that the total methane release from the coalmining industry amounts to about 72 Gg/a, as opposed to the National Communication estimates of 323 Gg/a in 1990 and 317 Gg/a in 1994. However, there are large errors associated with these estimates, and it is recommended that the methodology outlined in this report be extended to as many mines as possible to reduce the errors that are inherent in the physical processes underlying the release of methane from South African coalmines.

This publication summarizes, for potential contractors and other interested parties, the research, development, and demonstration contract projects programed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1982 (October 1, 1980 -September 30, 1981) under its Minerals Health and Safety Technology program. Contingencies may require that a significant port ion of the program be deferred into fiscal year 1983. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

Contractor's working in an urban environment face a multitude of working conditions. There is no typical "Downtown" job site. From afar we just see the skyline, or up close a specific building. This, of course, does not give us a clue as to the site conditions the foundation contractor faced in doing his work. The open, downtown building site is still available on some projects, but they are becoming rare as our cities are becoming more developed. A typical site today might include any one or several of the following problems: A. Deep pit with no ramp access B. Multi-type known or unknown obstructions C. Height limitations D. Load restrictions E. Existing adjacent building founded on shallow foundation F. Existing foundations G. Existing tunnels, utilities or subways

The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Diaphragm walls (D-walls) are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation elements. In addition, they are also quite often used as deep groundwater barriers, called Cut-Off-Walls (COW). Shanghai ranks third among the most densely populated metropolises in the world. In 1990, only eight million people lived there. Today, Shanghai has about25 million inhabitants. The increasing demand to accommodate the infrastructure of growing megacities like Shanghai pushes the required depth for subway, sewage and foundation projects to the limit. Future projects will demand excavation depths of more than 100 m (328 ft) on a regular basis. Already carried out reference projects will be described and a general outlook for upcoming projects will be given. The paper also explains the installation process in general focusing on the use of trench cutter technology. INTRODUCTION D- walls are known as underground structural elements, commonly used as retention systems for excavation pits and shafts as well as permanent foundation walls or elements. It is anticipated that, with the increasing trend of utilizing more and more underground space to accommodate environmental considerations and urban/suburban development, there will be an increasing requirement for diaphragm wall usage in even more difficult conditions and with increasing depth. The trench cutter is the most important tool for performing this work. The hydraulic grab, a well-known and valuable excavation tool for d-walls reaches its limits in terms of depth and when cutting rock. Therefore the trench cutter technology will be in the focus of this paper. The trench cutter itself is a reverse circulation excavation tool. It consists of a heavy steel frame with two drive gears attached to its bottom end, which rotates in opposite direction around the horizontal axis. Cutter wheels are mounted onto the drive gears. As they rotate, the soil beneath the cutter wheels is continuously broken up, removed, mixed with the bentonite slurry in the trench and moved towards the opening of the suction box of the pump? A centrifugal pump located right above the cutter wheels conveys the slurry via a hose system up to a desanding plant. There the slurry loaded with soil and rock particles is cleaned and returned into the trench.

Standard erosion plots (4.6 m by 22.1 m on 9 percent slope) were constructed on the Alston Surface Mine of Peabody Coal Company in Western Kentucky to evaluate the effects of placement technique and density on the erodibility and eroded size distribution from mine spoil and reconstructed topsoil. PLots were constructed with a dozer and scraper pan from shale spoil material, topsoil (A horizon) and subsoil (B and C horizon mixture) using soils stockpiled at the Alston Surface Mine. Plots were evaluated under fallow conditions with a tilled plot surface and two compacted conditions. One compacted condition was generated by tracking the surface with a dozer and rolling with a loaded scraper pan. The second was generated by rolling the surface with a solid wheel compactor. Rainfall was supplied with the Kentucky Rainfall Simulator at a rate of 63.5 mm h-l with the plots in three different soil moisture conditions; dry, field capacity, and very wet. Runoff was evaluated for flow rates, sediment concentrations, and aggregate and primary particle size distributions. Sediment yields and the Universal Soil Loss Equation E130 indexes were calculated from the data for each plot. The erodibility was calculated from the tilled plot data using a weighted soil loss and E130 value from the dry, field capacity and wet runs, and a cover management factor calculated for every other condition. For the topsoil and subsoil plots, sediment yield was greatest for the dozer scraper pan plots and lowest for the tilled plots. For the shale plots, erosion rates from the wheeled compacter plots were the highest and tilled plots the lowest. Average erodibilities were 0.14, 0.38, and 0.41 tons ac h ft-1 tonf-1 in-1 hundred ac-1 for the shale, subsoil, and top-soil plots. Cover management factors for each plot were 1.29, 1.42, and 1.17 for shale, topsoil and subsoil plots compacted with the solid wheeled compacter and 1.29, 3.79, and 2.51 for shale, subsoil, and topsoil plots compacted with the dozer scraper pan conbination. The accuracy of the Wischmeier erodibility nomograph was evaluated on the data collected. Erodibilities were accurately predicted for the topsoil plot and poorly predicted for the sub-soil plot. The accuracy of the CREAMS procedures for predicting the composition (size distribution) of eroded particles was also evaluated. The composition was well predicted for the topsoil plots, moderately well predicted for the shale plots and poorly predicted for the subsoil plots.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to determine if phosphogypsum, a waste material from the processing of phosphate rock, contains hazardous toxic materials as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and whether leaching of these toxic materials and radium may occur. Samples of the phosphogypsum stockpiled material were evaluated using the EPA extraction procedure, atomic absorption, neutron activation, x-ray diffraction, and chemical and physical means. Radiological tests performed used both the germanium-lithium and emanation methods. The data show that the phosphogypsum stockpiles are not hazardous toxic waste as defined by EPA criteria. Trace elements and radium are not leached from the phosphogypsum stockpiles. Absorption of trace elements and radium by phosphogypsum is the major reason for their not being leached. The standard error of measurement of radium concentrations was 4.7 pCi/g.

INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. Most of the tunnel is horse-shoe shaped and unsupported, but approximately 3,000 feet is supported by timber

US 4,190,436 - In the cyanide leaching of gold ore in tailing or ore dump piles, or gold ore in vats or on pads, the ore is agitated and oxygenated by introducing timed bursts of air, along with cyanide in a cyclic or regulated manner. The leach liquor is drained from the material by providing a continuous flow of air. Fines are homogenously mixed, thereby reducing channelling In the ore bed. Steel and concrete piles and power-actuated hammers have developed almost entirely within the past 100 years. Prior to that time, piles were mostly timber, driven with a drop hammer or a maul. The Engineering News Formula ? for timber piles driven with a drop hammer at a factor of safety of six ? was promulgated by Wellington in 1888. Steel com­panies supplied fabricated and rolled shapes for piles in the early 1900's. The thin shell and then uncased concrete piles originated about that time. Now leads have become sophisticated to accurately spot a pile at any required batter. Hammers have grown to phenomenal size and vibratories are being accepted at full value.

Due to the international depletion of reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, the ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia, have changed drastically from hard hematitic to more goethitic ore types, such as pisolitic and Marra Mamba ores. The level of impurities and loss on ignition in iron ore has also been slowly increasing. Finally, the proportion of fine material in the available products has increased considerably for most iron ore fines. This has been found to have significant impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. Magnetite concentrate is typically high in Fe grade and releases extra heat when oxidised to hematite. The amount of magnetite concentrates is expected to increase due to the recent development of a number of magnetite projects. Some of these magnetite concentrates will end in sinter blends. This will not only improve the sinter quality and but also have a beneficial impact on the fuel consumption of the sintering process. However, most of the concentrates available are very fine, which will negatively impact the green bed permeability and consequently the productivity of the sintering process. Linking Ashford International Station to the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link required over 5000 rotary bored and CFA (continuous flight auger) piles to form tunnel walls and viaduct foundations and to support overbridges and trackside barriers.. Much of the work was carried out close to the existing railway infrastructure. Plunged columns were used to maintain traffic flows over the tunnel site during construction. The results of an extensive programme of vertical and lateral load tests on bored and CFA piles in heavily overconsolidated Weald Clay are compared to illustrate the relative importance of stress relief and of prolonged exposure to bentonite. The completion on schedule of this major piling and ground engineering contract (value £30 million) demonstrates that collaborative working in partnership produced cost effective solutions to a series of challenging technical and logistical problems.

Thermodynamics data for silicates have applications in the fields of extractive metallurgy, ceramics, and geochemistry. To facilitate these applications, up-to-date tables of heats and free energies of formation are needed. It is the purpose of this report to supply such tables for anhydrous silicates. During the last 15 years the heats of formation of a substantial number of anhydrous silicates have been reliably determined at or near room temperature. This resulted from the development (first by the Bureau of Mines and later by the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, by the Institute of Geology of the University of Helsinki, Finland, and by the Department of Geology of the University of Chicago) of accurate solution calorimeters, employing hydrofluoric acid as the reaction medium. Specific references to work of these laboratories will be made in the next section of this report. Also, entropy data at 298.150 K. and high-temperature heat-content values are available for many of these silicates, mainly owing to work of the Bureau of Mines. Most of these entropy and heat-content data have been compiled in Bureau of Mines Bulletins (13, 15).3

The underground Neves Corvo copper-tin mine in southern Portugal currently disposes of its tailings in a ætraditionalÆ wet tailings impoundment. With the development of new technologies for preparation and transport of thickened tailings or paste, alternative tailings disposal options have become available that provide a more sustainable water management system and a higher degree of environmental protection. In addition, growing European resistance towards subaqueous disposal may well result in mandatory use of dry disposal methods in the near future. Twenty-four tailings disposal alternatives were evaluated through a cost-effective and easily-implementable bench-scale geochemical screening program conducted at site. Since the tailings are pyrite-rich and highly acid generating, particular emphasis was placed on monitoring likely indicators of sulfide oxidation under the various simulated disposal scenarios. Dependent parameters investigated as part of the program included moisture content, use of alkaline additives (lime, cement), use of a bactericide, and agitation. Response parameters included paste pH, specific conductance, and temperature as indicators of oxidation. The testing was carried out for 30 weeks. Results indicate that a number of relationships between the geochemical stability of the samples (ie sulfide oxidation) and sample characteristics can be readily identified. Based on the results of the screening program, a limited number of tailings mixtures have been selected for further long-term testing in field weathering cells to aid in the identification of the optimal mix design for future tailings disposal at the Neves Corvo Mine. This type of testing provides an inexpensive and reliable methodology for semi-quantitative comparison between tailings disposal alternatives, in particular at locations where more rigorous evaluation through long-term, fully replicated testing is not immediately feasible.

CRU estimates that the global supply of metallurgical grade alumina (MGA) grew by 5 percent during 2005 to a little more than 61 Mt (67 million st). About 30.7 Mt (33.8 million st), or 50.3 percent, of that originated from Oceania (principally due to the commissioning of the CAR refinery in Australia) and Latin America. In this context, Chinese production surged by 20.5 percent year-on-year to 7.7 Mt (8.5 million st) on the crest of a 17-percent rise in that country’s primary aluminium production. Meanwhile, on the demand side, there was a 6.7 percent climb year-on-year in global consumption to 62.3 Mt (68.6 million st). This reflected a healthy demand for primary metal from aerospace, construction, packaging and passenger transportation (to a lesser degree) in the United States, China, Brazil, South Korea and India. So there was an overall supply deficit of more than 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st). This, combined with an 18.3-percent diminution in closing stocks (down to 35 days of requirement), lifted the average spot price of MGA by 17.6 percent year-on-year to US$448/t (US$406/st).

Snodgrass presiding: PRESIDENT SNODGRASS (condensed report): The meeting will please come to order. As President of your Institute, I take pleasure in welcoming you to this convention, and to those who come from outside of the city, I take pleasure in Welcoming you to the city of Denver. This is the first convention at Denver in fifteen months. I hope that the annual rather than the semi-annual meetings will prove satisfactory to all, and that no mistake has been made in that respect. We are gathered together here to discuss problems common to all of us, and I am sure that we will profit by such discussion. We have with us, outside of the membership of our organization, representatives of two other organizations, Mr. Callbreath of the American Mining Congress, and Mr. Huntress of the National Coal Association. We will be honored by having them with us, and we shall expect to hear from them during this meeting.

Flooding of open pits now receives considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulphides. A state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit lake model is used to verify that a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy for the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia is to adopt a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit upon cessation of operations. By filling the pit initially with highly saline waters from evaporation/infiltration basins and naturally saline deep groundwater, followed by capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within 1 to 2 years, followed by the rapid onset of sulphate reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulphides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental management strategies. The proposed plan allows for: 1) safe storage of saline evaporation basin waters; 2) the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepages from other mine site operations should they arise; and 3) a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

Installation of initial tunnel support is often the most uncertain element of work in the design of, and a contractor bidding on, construction of a rock tunnel. The risks the construction contractor and owner assume are delineated to a great extent in the technical specifications portion of the contract documents. It is intended that this paper identify current practices for specifying initial tunnel support and the impacts each case has on the assignment of risks associated with providing the initial tunnel support. Examples of recently completed tunnel designs are given.
