Introduction The world has been suffering from an excessive production of all kinds of raw materials, and the metals and petroleum are no exception. As a consequence, at the moment, the urge to find new mineral deposits is almost non-existent and prospecting languishes. But from previous experience we know that sooner or later new supplies will be needed. Mineral deposits become exhausted, and to keep up the supplies of our metals and petroleum, new deposits must be found. Even now, a supply of petroleum of domestic production would not be unwelcome in Canada. It is not, therefore, so entirely malapropos to discuss means of finding ores and oil as it would seem. Almost any physical property connected in definite manner with minerals and rocks may be made the basis of geophysical exploration. This is particularly true of electrical resistivity, and its utilization in electrical prospecting has been the deciding factor in the discovery of such big ore-bodies as Buchans mine, Newfoundland, and the large copper ore-bodies in northern Sweden, etc., as well as in the solution of many foundation and structural problems. The importance of electrical prospecting has been growing steadily, and already there exists hardly any exploration project involving geological problems which may not profit by its application. Electrical prospecting is marching on, and neither temporary failures, nor incompetence, nor over-optimism, nor ill-will and pessimism, nor bad times and business depression, will be able to halt its progress.

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

When I retired in the fall of 1998, I looked forward to spending a lot less time traveling and a lot more time around home. After 4 years, I’m still traveling and still wondering how to find a few more hours in the day.

The mechanism of resulfurization in the desulfurization process with magnesium vapor produced in situ by aluminothermic reduction of magnesium oxide was clarified in the present work. The influences of various operating parameters on the resulfurization were studied and the methods that could prevent resulfurization were proposed. There are two kinds of mechanisms of resulfurization in the desulfurization process with magnesium. One is decomposition of the desulfurization product of MgS under the inert atmosphere. The other is oxidation of MgS under the oxidative atmosphere. Under the present experimental conditions, lowering operating temperature and oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere could effectively prevent the resulfurization. Adding CaO onto the melt surface was an effective method for preventing the resulfurization due to transformation of the desulfurization product of MgS into the more stable compound of CaS. Since addition of the activated charcoal powders greatly decreased the transfer rate of oxygen in the atmosphere to the melt surface, it also reduced the resulfurization remarkably.

Twenty field-scale tests were conducted in a 28 MW pulverized coal power plant in Healy, Alaska, to examine mill power consumption in relation to coal grind size. The intent in this field-scale study was to verify if grind size truly impacted power consumption by a detectable amount. The regression model developed from the data indicates that grind size does impact mill power consumption, with finer grinds consuming significantly more power than coarser grinds. However, other factors such as coal hardness (i.e., the lower the Hardgrove Grindability Index, or the harder the coal, the higher the power consumption) and mill throughput (i.e., the higher the throughput, the higher the power consumption) had to be included before the impact of grind size could be isolated. It was also observed that combining amperage and flow rate into a single parameter, i.e., specific amperage, hurt modeling. Cost analysis based on the regression model indicate a power savings of $19,972 per year if the coal were ground to 50% passing 76 mm rather than the industry standard of 70% passing 76 mm. The study also demonstrated that size reduction constituted a significant portion of the power consumption.

The Chinese energy and mineral industries are readying themselves for a period of dynamic transition, unprecedented in the country's long and sometimes turbulent history. The transition comes as a result of the government's new program of "Four Modernizations" in its agricultural, defense, industry, and science and technology sectors. The announced program is generally considered by Western observers to be a moderate, pragmatic approach to get China on the road to industrial parity with Western nations by the year 2000. The game plan calls for integration with the West to beef up Chinese know-how and the purchase of foreign technology to supplement areas where China lacks the ability to do so itself. While the role of energy and minerals is not specifically mentioned in the program, it was made clear to ME that China realizes the basis of any sustained modernization program is tied closely to the health of its minerals sector. Various published reports have indicated the existence of an already vibrant energy and minerals sector with world rank production in coal, iron ore, tin, antimony, cement, pyrite, asbestos and tungsten to name just a few. For the most part, except for the export metals, the primary focus of China's production has been on fulfilling domestic needs. Now the new initiatives are aimed not only at self-sufficiency, but also on propelling the country's natural resource clout into international prominence. With a mineral resource base that is considered by many westerners a potential bonanza, China's new long march toward modernization will be an exciting adventure, well worth watching. Big Projects Spark Excitement China's renewed commitment to a more liberal program is as much a desire to "walk on its own two legs" as it is a backlash from the frustrating years that followed the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s. Much of the early excitement was initiated by China's Premier and Party Chairman Hua Guo-feng in speaking to the fifth National People's Congress (NPC) in 1978. Here, Chairman Hua presented the Communist Party's 10-year blueprint for economic development. Specifically, the Party's plans called for completion of 120 large-scale industrial projects by 1985. Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

In the past ten to fifteen years, many organizations have applied business process re-engineering (BPR) to significantly improve their business competitiveness or stave off closures. The mining industry in Southern Africa is no exception and documented examples can be drawn from South Africa. Although the concept is superficially simple, its application has been marked by a high failure rate of about 70 per cent because it has been generally misunderstood. Shabanie mine, a chrysotile asbestos fibre producer in Zimbabwe took cognisance of this fact by cautiously embarking on a modular BPR programme in October of 2002. A year was used as a complete cycle or module for re-evaluation of the programme. Shabanie mine adopted BPR as part of management efforts to remain competitive amid serious threats to operational viability. These threats included hyper-inflation driven rising production costs, a declining world asbestos market and a possibility that Russia could take over the shrinking world asbestos market by dumping low-priced asbestos fibre. The only competitive advantage that the mine had was the high quality of its long-fibre chrysotile asbestos. The major BPR thrust was therefore to redesign processes for improved productivity and ultimately achieve a lower cost per ton of final asbestos fibre product. In addition, corporate culture change and cost-saving were also factored into the programme. This paper discusses the implementation experience of the BPR programme at the mine. The main BPR beneficial highlights are improved productivity, sizeable cost-savings, positive corporate culture change and identification of secondary projects. One of the lessons learnt from this programme is that mining companies will have to deal with the HIV/AIDS pandemic if they are to sustain high levels of productivity into the future.

I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum' and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.' Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. "Taseko Mines Limited recommenced operation of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine in 2004 and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3) project included a second stand-alone copper-molybdenum concentrator, a stand-alone molybdenum separation plant and associated services. Ausenco was contracted to commence the detailed design in 2Q2011, commissioning commenced in 4Q2012 and first ore was processed in 1Q2013. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the GDP3 Concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Gibraltar Mine (Gibraltar) property is located in the Cariboo Region of south central British Columbia, approximately 360 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. The site is accessed via an 18 kilometer paved road from the town of McLeese Lake, which is located on the province’s main north-south highway between the cities of Williams Lake and Quesnel. Gibraltar was originally developed by Placer Development and commenced production in 1972. Gibraltar was acquired, while on care and maintenance, by Taseko Mines Limited (Taseko) in 1999 during a period of unusually low metal prices. Taseko recommenced operations at Gibraltar in 2004, and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The 1972 Gibraltar process flowsheet incorporated two-stage crushing followed by rod and ball milling and flotation. In 2008 Gibraltar completed their first development stage that included the installation of a SAG mill, converting the existing rod mills to ball mills and adding additional flotation capacity. Gibraltar continued development with the installation of an in-pit primary crusher, expansion of the bulk regrind circuit, expansion of the cleaner flotation circuit, replacement of the tailings pumping system and replacement of the concentrate filters and dryer."

The Somita plant processes low sulphide gold ore in Burkina Faso with a CIL process. After experiencing recurrent low gold recoveries, Somita undertook an investigation on the source of the problem. COREM conducted a mineralogical study on different pit samples. A series of tests was also conducted on a composite sample from the plant which shows a content of 3.4 g/t in gold and 0.48 % in graphite. A reference test in laboratory resulted in a recovery of gold of 75%, similar to plant recoveries for the evaluated ore. In these tests, even if cyanide is not deficient, it was diverted mainly into iron cyanide complex, copper cyanide complexes and by graphite adsorption. Causes of low recovery were also identified and quantified. Solutions to increase gold recovery were suggested such as increasing gold dissolution kinetics by O2 or by lead nitrate addition, change in activated carbon addition point location to the 1st cyanidation tank and finer grinding to increase liberation. Increase in the pH could also contribute to reduce cyanidation consumption. Following these recommendations, Somita changed carbon addition from tank 2 to tank 1 in the CIL circuit. This change led to an increase of more than 5% in gold recovery. A system for the addition of lead nitrate is also under implementation at the plant and benefit will be evaluated in 2013. Finally, pit management for cyanidation will be done based on mineralogy instead of gold content in the future.

This investigation was divided into two major phases. Phase I of the study was an examination of the occurrence and production of acid water within the Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho. The second phase of the project involved the study of water movement through an abandoned tailings pile. Mineralogy and hydrogeology were determined to be the two most important factors in the acid mine drainage problem. Low pH water was formed in the mine in areas of lead-zinc ore rich in pyrite. Water movement in the mine was important in the production of acid and the transportation of heavy metals. Areas of recharge to the mine were identified. A data collection network was installed to monitor water quality and quantity changes. The quantity of acid drainage from the mine was found to vary directly with surface runoff events. The study of the abandoned tailings pile was performed to determine the characteristics of water movement through the tailings material and the resultant impact on the hydrologic environment. The Page Tailings Pile, abandoned in 1969, was utilized as a study area. An extensive network of piezometers and meteorological data collection sites were installed in and near the pile. Data collected to date indicate the presence of a ground-water mound under the east half of the pile. Some transfer of ions from the tailings pile to the ground-water system has been detected.

In this study, spent grain was used as an adsorbent for the removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions, the process parameters such as contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose, and initial Hg(II) concentration were studied in batch experiments. The initial adsorption process was fast, 91.08% of adsorption occurred within 5 min and equilibrium was reached at around 30min. Adsorption process was found to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics. The equilibrium data were better fitted to Langmuir isotherm than Freundlich isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity 41.36 mg/g. The structure and component of spent grain before and after adsorption of Hg(II) were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX), these analysis also confirmed the adsorption of Hg(II) onto spent grain. The results indicated that spent grain had potential as a new inexpensive adsorbent for Hg(II) removal from aqueous solutions.

Brownfield project portfolios are notoriously hard to manage. Day to day there is a constant stream of changes and challenges within projects and across the whole program. When the budget year is over, we?re often left wondering: did the facilities get what they really needed? Did we get value for the capital that was spent? Did we get all the project control and process improvement that we paid for? Great work has been done over the years by the Project Management Institute, Construction Industry Institute and Independent Project Analysis to identify what leads to project success, develop project delivery systems and equip project leaders to perform better. But is attention to individual projects all we need when the job is to deliver a portfolio of many projects? Let?s work with an analogy for a moment, and say a project is like a car, and a project manager the driver. Why can?t all the projects in the portfolio get home in time for dinner? The answer, of course, is that the commute home is about traffic, not just about cars. The road, the signals and the actions of other drivers affect us in our individual cars. Optimizing traffic flow is not about managing individual cars, it is about creating the conditions that allow all traffic to move as smoothly as possible. When we?re stuck in traffic, it doesn?t really matter that we are skilled drivers who know our exact location and our engine?s vital signs. Success with a brownfield portfolio requires more than the equivalent of driver training and a good GPS in every vehicle. Managing the annual budget requires more than tight management of each project. This is not a suggestion to abandon project management in the brownfield multi-projects world; the idea is to find and apply the right tools for delivering a portfolio. Remember, we want confidence in 3 areas: 1. that the facility is getting what it really needs, when it needs it 2. that we are getting value for money invested in facility modifications and improvements, and 3. that our controls are adding value by guiding our improvement What are those portfolio tools? The job they have to do is distinct from project-level thinking: ? Create a clear and balanced business pull for project ideas ? Maintain a respectable plan for fiscal, resource and business control ? Organize the work into a steady flow ? Manage the nature and timing of value-driven project substitutions and priority changes ? Focus on overall business value added and best use of resources ? Repurpose the projects organization into being the way the facility gets improved

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. Industrial minerals are generally considered to include non-metallic minerals, mineral products, or materials that provide raw material inputs for the construction, chemical, and manufacturing industries. They are often relatively low-value and bulky materials that are generally used close to where they are produced; however, some raw materials may be transported hundreds of kilometres to manufacturers and customers (ENDM, 2021). They do not include the metallic minerals, mineral fuels, or gemstones, and are used in industries based on their physical and/or chemical properties (Wikipedia, 2021). In contrast to most metallic minerals, a general distinguishing characteristic of the industrial minerals sector is their general low degree of market elasticity in relation to the market prices and product specifications. The estimation of either a Mineral Resource or a Mineral Reserve (MRMR) for an industrial minerals deposit can be affected to a significant degree by a number of factors that are not typically applicable to metallic mineral deposits. These factors can include such considerations as the particular physical and chemical characteristics of the final product, product quality issues, market size and market access. In some cases, such information may be confidential and proprietary. One of the key challenges of the industrial minerals sector is to define a commonly accepted listing of which types of minerals, materials, or mineral deposits can be considered as industrial minerals (Mining Standards Task Force, 1999). Although definitions for what constitutes an industrial mineral can vary in detail, general descriptions can be found in American Geosciences Institute (2021), Fastmarkets IM (2021), Snowden (2019), SME (2021) and Wikipedia (2021). A brief listing of some of the materials and minerals that are generally considered to be industrial minerals is provided in Table 1. For the purposes of this document, all references to industrial minerals include not only the minerals, materials, and mineral deposits themselves, but also the various commercial products that are derived from these sources.

The new Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in the United States (Chinese Embassy) is located in the Embassy Row portion of Northwest Washington DC. The 475,000 ft2 (44,125 m2) structure has five levels below ground and four above, making it the largest embassy in Washington DC. The structure approaches the property line on all sides, and is immediately adjacent to several foreign embassies and a secure U.S. Federal Building. A vertical soil nail wall was used as the primary support of excavation (SOE) system for the project. The soil nail wall was irregularly shaped, benched in areas, and reached total heights up to 98 feet (29.9 m). The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. Tight excavation requirements were defined for the project due to the location of the building relative to the property line, requiring fairly precise wall positions and shotcrete tolerances. Design challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, underground utilities, and seismic impacts from blasting. The paper will focus on the design, construction, and performance of the soil nail SOE system, as well as touch on the logistical and political factors that influenced the design. The paper also notes the Value Engineering and communication approaches that were generated during construction. These efforts resulted in a significant improvement in the quality control and quality assurance exhibited on site, expedited the schedule, and led to significant cost savings to the contractors, engineer, and owner.

A new prinicple of side dumping front end loading for underground mucking machines has completely changed the concept of underground loading and haulage equipment arrangement both in production and development work loading. Versatility and adaptability of this type of machine permits combinations with a broad range of haulage means not possible with -conventional overhead loaders. Steel "armored" conveyors serving this type of loader are replacing conventional rail mounted car haulage to give a continuous loading operation and effect important economics of reduced manpower, faster loading rates and fewer working areas for a required production. First used in Germany this easy to control and highly efficient means of placing rock from the muck pile on or into haulage means has advanced the art of underground rock loading more in the past three years than any other advancement since the first successful small crawler mounted air powered loader was introduced in 1954. Bucket type loaders with a relative new side dump principle are gaining in popularity for underground loading. They are replacing conventional overhead loaders in present applications and becoming first choice in new ones. Primarily for hard rock development and production loading they are also widely used in production loading of coal and other soft materials. This discussion briefly traces the historical development of hard rock underground loaders to the new side dump type and its present population. In more detail various applications, loading techniques and the advantages of operation, production and economy with the side dumper in hard rock loading will be dealt with.
