The paper describes prediction, control and validation of face pressures, and special TBM features for the bored tunnels of the New Metro Rail City Project, Perth, Australia. The selected EPB-TBM passed below a heritage bridge and the operational Perth Railway station in ground conditions consisting of fully saturated uniform sand combined with shallow overburden and a horizontal alignment radius of only 135m. Therefore, strict control of volume loss, TBM operations and ground movements was vital requiring continuous evaluation and adjustments to TBM operation parameters. The paper discusses the effectiveness of applied TBM face pressures and the used foam/polymer soil conditioning which was measured against achieved volume loss and the predicted range of ground settlements.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 20,500-acre part of the 104,085-acre Rincon Wilderness Study Area (OR-002-082) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The wilderness study area is located in Harney County, OR, about 12 miles west from Fields. No mineral resources were identified within the study area. A literature search found no records of mining or minerals exploration, nor did a ground search find any evidence of mining-related activity. Of seven alluvial samples taken from the major drainages of the study area, all were barren except one. This sample, taken from a dry streambed along the southern boundary, contained $0.07 gold per cubic yard; however, this small amount of gold is of no economic significance, and the source is probably outside the study area. The Pueblo-Steens mining district extends to within 4 miles east of the study area. No evidence of geological environments similar to those that were responsible for the formation of resources or occurrences of metals and nonmetals within the district is known within the study area.

As part of its program to develop technology that will encourage maximum utilization of the Nation's mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on debrining potash-clay waste slurries by means of flocculation with a high-molecular-weight polymer and subsequent solid-liquid separation on a rotating trommel screen. In laboratory batch tests, potash-clay waste slurries were consolidated from initial clay contents of 8 pct to final contents of 30 pct with a polymer dosage of 1.2 Ib/ton of dry clay waste. Small-scale continuous tests yielded debrined products containing 20 pct solids using a polymer dosage of 1 Ib/ton of dry clay solids.

Proven and probable coal reserves in Iran are estimated to be in excess of 5 Billion tons while the annual coal production is a mere 2 Million tons. Underdevelopment of the industry has proved higher production levels to be impossible, despite growing demand for energy supplies. The existences of numerous legislation are thought to have a detrimental effect on coal mining activities to the extent that some business entities have become uneconomical in many areas. This paper provides an analysis of the prevailing mining laws, policy making, legal frameworks and obstacles. It also outlines some other obstacles enshrined in the law and also highlights areas where foreign direct investment should be encouraged. The costs of lost opportunities are then estimated. The paper concludes by demonstrating that deregulations, amendments and in some cases complete abolishment of the incumbent legislations governing the coal mining industry will greatly enhance development of the industry. The analysis provided in this paper together with the results obtained, can prove useful to macro-economic policy makers both at local and national levels.

Traditional vat leaching methods have had limited success, primarily due to the high cost of loading and unloading the vats. In general, such batch methods are labor-intensive and costly. Heap leaching has emerged as a viable, low- cost alternative, but low recoveries, normally in the 70% range, offer opportunities for improvement. Also increased regulatory guidlelines for effluent and spent heap leach pads disposal offer potential for alternative methods. The Mackie Vat Leaching Jig (MVLJ) has had its incubation at Ortech International, where bench scale through pilot scale testing continues. Design developments and testwork over the past two years indicate that the time may be right for field trials.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

This paper describes the design philosophy and methods employed in constructing the foundation elements for the Little Britain Project in the City of London. The Contract is a design and construct package for the foundations of a 3-storey basement which will be built using "top-down" construction techniques and is to be carried out by Fairclough Piling and Marine on behalf of Wimgrove Nominees. The Project includes 8000 sq.m. of diaphragm wall and barrettes 139 No. large diameter piles ranging from 900mm to 3000mm in diameter and up to 45m deep, and 9 No. cruciform barrettes for the heaviest column loads. Major factors influencing the design of these foundations include differential settlement, heave analysis and a fast track construction approach. Little Britain will provide 43000 sq.m. of space in two linked buildings which will bridge a new road joining London Wall to Newgate Street. The foundation contract is well advanced and the building is due for completion in the Summer of 1990.

To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their Resource Development Navigation Study, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) examined the potential for mineral development near ten Alaska port sites. This report presents the results for the following four sites: Balboa Bay, Beluga, Lost River, and Point MacKenzie. There are 579 known deposits within the area considered for these ports. The majority of the deposits are located within a highway/railroad corridor examined for the Point MacKenzie port site. Based on the current level of knowledge, coal deposits near the Beluga and Point MacKenzie port sites are most likely to be developed in the near future. This conclusion is based on the fact that coal projects in these areas are actively being pursued for development. The mineral wealth surrounding the four port sites is substantial. Mine models were used to examine the potential for mining tin, gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum. The models were based on published reserve and grade data and therefore do not include proprietary company data which, if available, would likely change the analysis results. Of the models examined, the tin placer mine model developed for the Lost River port site proved to be closest to being economic.

PREVIOUSLY I have dealt with the methods of separating silver from copper. There now remains the portion which treats of solidified juices ; and whereas they might be considered as alien to things metallic, nevertheless, the reasons why they should not be separated from it I have explained in the second book. Solidified juices are either prepared from waters in which nature or art has infused them, or they are produced from the liquid juices themselves, or from stony minerals. Sagacious people, at first observing the waters of some lakes to be naturally full of juices which thickened on being dried up by the heat of the sun and thus became solidified juices, drew such waters into other places, or diverted them into low-lying places adjoining hills, so that the heat of the sun should likewise cause them to condense. Subsequently, because they observed that in this wise the solidified juices could be made only in summer, and then not in all countries, but only in hot and temperate regions in which it seldom rains in summer, they boiled them in vessels over a fire until they began to thicken. In this manner, at all times of the year, in all regions, even the coldest, solidified juices could be obtained from solutions of such juices, whether made by nature or by art. Afterward, when they saw juices drip from some roasted stones, they cooked these in pots in order to obtain solidified juices in this wise also. It is worth the trouble to learn the pro- portions and the methods by which these are made. I will therefore began with salt, which is made from water either salty by nature, or by the labour of man, or else from a solution of salt, or from lye, likewise salty. Water which is salty by nature, is condensed and converted into salt in salt-pits by the heat of the sun, or else by the heat of a fire in pans or pts or trenches. That which is made salty by art, is also condensed by fire and changed into salt. There should be as many salt-pits dug as the circumstance of the place permits, but there should not be more made than can be used, although we ought to make as much salt as we can sell. The depth of salt-pits should be moderate, and the bottom should be level, so that all the water is evaporated from the salt by the heat of the sun. The salt-pits should first be encrusted with salt, so that they may not suck up the water. The method of pouring or leading sea-water into salt-pits is very old, and is still in use in many places. The method is not less old, but less common, to pour well-water into salt-pits, as was done in Babylon, for which Pliny is the authority, and in Cappadocia, where they used not only well-water, but also spring-water. Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

One phase of Bureau of Mines health and safety work is promotion of the use of safe and effective dust-collecting devices in connection with rock drilling in coal mines. To insure that adequate equipment of this type is available to the coal-mining industry, the Bureau of Mines conducts investigations and issues approvals for dust-collecting equipment that meets the requirements of a schedule established for testing dust collectors intended for use in connection with roof drilling for roof bolting and for other rock drilling. 6/ Performance tests are conducted under the provisions of this schedule by engineers of the Branch of Health Research. This circular describes briefly the requirements and procedure for approval and lists drill-dust collectors that have been granted approval as of January 31, 1956. The addresses of manufacturers of approved devices are listed alphabetically at the end of this circular.

The liquid membrane separation process was first patented in 1968 for separating hydrocarbons.(1-4) This stimulated many researchers to join in the area of separating organic compounds. l Since then, its applications have been extended to the removal of contaminants from waste water,(12-33) encapsulation of enzymes and/or microorganisms for reaction and/or separation, (24-28) oxygenation of blood (artificial lung),(19) removal of toxins from blood (artificial kidney)(26,20) and metal extraction.(31-63) This paper discusses the possible process schemes for using liquid membranes to separate and concentrate copper ion from its acidic leaching solution.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines case study of pillar recovery in high-grade ore near the Ross shaft at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD, has demonstrated the usefulness of the finite-element method for evaluating shaft pillar mining plans and shaft stability. This report focuses on mine measurements and calibration of the two-dimensional computer model and is the second in a series of three Reports of Investigations describing the Ross shaft study. In this study, borehole extensometers and other instruments were installed to provide data for model verification and to monitor the shaft. Results of the recalibrated two-dimensional model (UTAH2) confirmed the premining stability evaluation. However, after mining began, concern was expressed because cracks and other signs of ground motion appeared at considerable distances from the area of active pillar mining. In part 3 of the study, an intense three-dimensional modeling effort using UTAH3 was initiated. The results again showed that the observed effects were within expectations and that the shaft would remain safe. Three-dimensional analyses of alternative pillar mining scenarios indicated that more of the shaft pillar ore reserve could be recovered than previously thought.

The quality of Lime Cement (L/C) columns is to a great extent dependent on the installation procedure. At a site in the south of Sweden, the client reported problems with the installed columns. To evaluate the operator and equipment dependent part of the installation, Hercules Grundläggning AB was appointed as a competitor to the site contractor. The purpose was to install a number of L/C columns with equal installation parameters for both contractors. A total of 65 test columns were installed in June 1999. The geology is a typical Swedish organic soil profile with a top layer of peat overlying gyttja and clay. Two different binders were used in the comparison; blast furnace slag with cement and lime with cement. After installation, the quality of the columns was monitored by penetration tests and a column sampler for extracting whole columns. The column penetration test were performed 28 and 134 days after installation and extraction 134 days after installation. Inspection and tests of the extracted columns showed that by using a fully computer controlled procedure, the contractor produces columns of superior quality and homogeneity.
