In flotation, hydrophobic particles are selectively collected by air bubbles, and the bubble-particle aggregates enter the froth phase. However, less hydrophobic particles drop off from the froth phase, while more hydrophobic particles are recovered. Thus, the froth phase provides an important cleaning mechanism. In the present communication, the froth-phase recovery process has been modeled by considering particle retention times and the carrying capacities of bubbles. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data reported by Seaman et al. (2006). The results show that the froth-phase recovery varies with particle size, particle hydrophobicity, and bubble coarsening.

This paper summarizes the results of an investigation sponsored by The Coates Steel Products Company. The objective was to determine the relative effects of certain chemical and physical properties on the wear resistance of grinding balls when grinding cement. In making this study, a number of types of balls were used in both dry and wet grinding in commercial ball mills. The radioactive-tracer technique was used in separating the test balls from the rest of the mill charge and in sorting the different types of halls that were all tested at the same time for each of the grinding operations. PROCESSING OF GRINDING BALLS In order to determine whether the properties of grinding balls, namely, composition, microstructure and hardness, can be related to the rate of wear, the halls used in this study were selected to represent various combinations of these properties. It was recognized that the mechanism of wear was not the same in the wet mill as in the dry mill. Therefore, the types of balls tested in each of the two environments were not necessarily the same. However, all of the types of balls evaluated in the dry mill were tested simultaneously for one time period, while those evaluated in the wet mill were tested simultaneously for three different time periods. All of the test balls were separated from the charge when the mill was dumped. All of the balls were of 0.940-inch diameter when charged, and all but the regular production balls were finish ground to this size to eliminate the decarburized surface layers. The steels and processing methods used, as well as the micro-structures and hardness levels of the balls, are described as follows: Regular production forged SAE 1095 steel balls were used in both the wet and dry mills. They were forged to a nominal diameter of 0.940 inch and quenched in oil from the forging temperature. Each retained a partially decarburized surface layer from the forging bar stock; the maximum depth of this layer was about 0.030 inch and the decarburization was negligible where the ball was sheared from the bar. The hardness at the surface was 40 to 46 Rock-well C in the partially decarburized area and 57 to 62 Rockwell C in the areas not decarburized. The hardened zone extended to a depth of about one-third of the radius. Below the decarburized layer, the hardened zone consisted primarily of hard as-quenched martensite with varying amounts of retained austenite. This structure changed to fine pearlite at a depth of about one-third of the radius. In order to eliminate the effect of the decarburized layer, a set of production balls of SAE 1095 steel was forged to about a 1-inch diameter, quenched in oil from the forging temperature, and ground on ball-bearing grinding equipment to a 0.940-inch diameter to remove the decarburized layer. The balls' hardened zones were similar to those in the previous set. The hardness of the finished surfaces was 52 to 60 Rockwell C. A slight amount of decarburization apparently remained after the removal of about 0.030 inch from the surface. Balls of this type were tested in the dry mill only. The report covers several aspects of mine safety ground systems, primarily for underground coal mines. The design of a combined ground fault-ground check monitoring system is presented. An analysis is made of grounding systems for dc shuttle cars. Complete resistance data and results of physical inspections of self-salting ground rods are presented. A detailed resistance and economic analysis is presented for the use of composite materials for building inexpensive and effective ground beds in high-resistivity areas. The desireability of penetrating the coal seam with a borehole safety ground is investigated. A report is made of a Mine Substation Grounding and Bonding Workshop.

"The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

Two triggered barrier systems and several extinguishing agents were tested against coal dust explosion propagating in the main entry of the Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. One system used a high-pressure cylinder to propel the extinguishant; the second system used pressurized nitro-gas or Halon 1301 (CF3Br) in a low-pressure system to power the disperser. The relative efficiencies of the extinguishants were determined by compar¬ing calculated concentrations of the extinguishant clouds present in the mine during suppressing of the explosions. Results showed the following trend of increasing effectiveness: Purple-K (KHC03)<water<hybrids consisting of foam or water combined with Halon 1301<Halon alone. On a weight basis, water was two to three times as efficient as Purple-K, whereas the hybrids and Halon alone were only marginally superior to water. Maximum efficiency of an extinguishant is attained by high rates of discharge from the barrier and by minimizing the time interval between onset of discharge and flame arrival to that necessary for discharge. Both the high- and low-pressure barrier systems were demonstrated to be capable of suppressing coal dust explosions; however, because of the potential hazard of the former, the low-pressure system is considered to be the most attractive prototype.

The decay of 222 Rn yields a series of short-lived decay products which become attached to the surface of a plate or wire exposed in a 222Rn-bearing atmosphere. The alpha-activity of two of the decay products, 218Po and 214Po, can be measured by simple counting techniques. This phenomenon may have direct application to uranium exploration. Laboratory studies have shown that: (a) radon decay products can be collected on a wide variety of materials (including various kinds of metals and plastics); (b) activity increases as a function of the surface area of the &apos;collector; and (c) the collection of the decay products is enhanced by applying a negative charge. The new technique was used in situ to delineate the anomaly above the South March uranium-copper occurrence. A related technique was developed to measure radium in soil samples. The results of both studies compared favourably with those obtained from conventional methods.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. The works recorded in this Test Report have been performed by Rade Roncar - Electrotechnical Institute of Zagreb, SFR Yugoslavia in collaboration with Bureau of Mines. The main objective of these investigations was to investigate the possibility of fabrication of thin-walled square enclosures of satisfactory safety factor in accordance with requirements of effective technical regulations. The results and the investigations can be divided in three main fields: - investigations of thin-walled enclosures with the view of determination of pressures causing technological deformations before performing tests in accordance with effective applicable regulations, - finding the safety factor by means of tests of metal-foam pressure vents, - comparison of enclosures with and without pretreatment by technological deformation.

The 5 km (16,194 lf) of 6.1m (20 ft) diameter TBM driven tunnel built by the J.F.Shea Co. will serve as sewage overflow storage. The TBM tunnel and four connecting tunnels excavated by drill and blast methods in hard granite will remain unlined. Based on the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR), the Contract documents provided a design with no required pattern of rock bolts, no probing, no pre-excavation or consolidation grouting, and lastly, no final lining of the tunnels was deemed necessary. This paper will provide a general overview of these topics with the emphasis on the actual ground conditions encountered versus the projected conditions provided in the GBR and how the GBR reflected the design of the project. Proposed modifications to the temporary and permanent ground support will be presented and the necessity of probing and pre-excavation grouting will be evaluated.

"In conventional flotation, fluoride ions selectively would react with the aluminum site on the microcline surface and produce negative charged sites for amine to be adsorbed (Smith, 1976). According to this view, aluminum site is considered as a key feature in feldspar flotation. Generally, fluoride ion has been widely used as a modifying agent in silicate flotation. Since O'Meara's patent appeared on HF -amine reagent system to selectively float feldspar from quartz in 1942, relatively few contributions have been devoted in this issue. The reason might be that the process works very well, and accordingly there is no initiative to investigate in this area. However, due to the awareness of international community to restrict using of hazardous reagents like HF, sound engineering practice to search for alternative methods, not utilizing HF, has been launched. Inspection of literature, one can find several works dealing with this issue.In this contribution, the effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases."

This work was done by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with an uncomplicated, first-approximation method for designing blast patterns, considering geologic structure, and to show the valid use of the technique by comparing drill and blast pattern dimensions used in the quarry with those determined by the presented method. The author visited 12 limestone and dolomite quarries in Ohio (Adam, Crawford, and Highland Counties), Wisconsin (Milwaukee, Racine, and Waukesha Counties), and Minnesota (Fillmore, Olmsted, and Wabasha Counties); observed the blasting practices; studied the major geologic features; and after discussion with the quarry managers, foremen, and blasters, compared the quarry blasting patterns with those as calculated by the empirical formulas (after R. L. Ash), with geologic structural considerations. When geologic structure such as bedding, jointing, folding, and caves, as well as explosive properties and field performance characteristics are accounted for in a manner suggested by the research, the presented empirical formulas may be used as a good first approximation. The included steps in planning a blast design and generalized blast patterns should be of help to the quarry operator. Design changes are recommended for those quarries where problems are occurring.

The Statnamic loading test is a new and innovative method for testing deep foundations. The test is relatively inexpensive, quick, easily mobilized, provides for direct measurement of applied load and corresponding displacement, and is capable of very high loading capacities. The long duration of the applied loading, as compared to a dynamic loading test, allows for a straightforward determination of the static behaviour of the foundation tested. A new method of analysis of the Statnamic loading test, the Equilibrium Point Method, is presented. A description is given of the pile-soil model and a demonstration of how the static load-displacement behaviour of deep foundations may be predicted from the Statnamic loading test data. The Equilibrium Point Method of analysis is applied to three types of deep foundations in soils which respond differently to fast loading rates. These case histories, from Canada and the United States, include data from static loading tests for direct comparison, and demonstrate the ability of the Equilibrium Point Method to predict static behaviour of the deep foundations.

"Trial application of air decks on a production shot improved fragmentation (32% reduction in x50). Empirical fragmentation models and digital image processing software were used to estimate fragment size distribution of the blasted muck pile. The x20, x50, and x80 passing fractions, and top size were 42, 265, 683, and 1,455 mm, respectively. Air-deck application reduced explosives load in blastholes, lowering total charging cost by US$20/hole (15% decrease) and the powder factor to an average of 0.86 kg/m3 (12% decrease). Blast results were 443,624 t of blasted material from the block (90% of total muck pile) was smaller than 900 mm.RÉSUMÉ L’application pilote de trous d’air dans le cadre du coup de mine effectué pour commencer la production a amélioré la fragmentation (une réduction de 32 % des x50). Des modèles empiriques de fragmentation et un logiciel de traitement numérique des images ont permis d’estimer la composition granulométrique des fragments du tas de déblais abattus. Les fractions de passé de crible de x20, x50, x80 et la dimension supérieure étaient représentées par des dimensions respectives de 42, 265, 683 et 1 455 mm. L’application de trous d’air a permis de diminuer la charge d’explosifs nécessaires dans les trous de mine, réduisant ainsi les coûts totaux de chargement de 20 $ US/trou (soit une réduction de 15 %) ainsi que le facteur de chargement (facteur poudre) à une moyenne de 0,86 kg/m3 (soit une réduction de 12 %). INTRODUCTIONThe main objectives of production blasting are to achieve optimum rock fragmentation and to minimize overall production costs. Because blast fragmentation significantly affects the profitability of a mine, blasting is the first step of the size reduction in mining: An optimum size distribution is required to maximize the performance of mining and subsequent milling processes. If the fragmentation size distribution can be modelled and controlled, operations performance will improve. Blast fragmentation modelling is important in mineto- mill optimization: It allows the estimation of blast fragmentation distributions that can be modelled in downstream mining processes to determine the optimum blast design."

"INTRODUCTION In the State of Alabama few mines produce coal clean enough to be marketed directly without being washed. This is particularly true where the coal is to be used for the production of metallurgical coke. In washing plants where single-compartment jigs alone are used to treat a large range of sizes, it has been found that the washed coal finer than 1/4-inch contains a large proportion of free impurities and is much higher in ash content than are the coarser sizes. To reduce the ash content of this fine material with jigs usually entails a greet reduction in capacity and a loss of coarse coal in the refuse. This investigation, conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Alabama By-Products Corporation, was undertaken to determine whether the fine washed coal from jigs could be economically re-treated on coal washing tables.COALS TESTEDThrough,the cooperation of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, samples of fine-sized washed coal were obtained from their washeries at Bradford and Gamma.The Bradford mine, on the Black Creek bed, yields a low-ash, medium-volatile coal with fairly good coking properties. This coal is blended with coal from the Mary Lee bed for coking purposes and compensates for the high ash content of the latter. The Black Creek bed is about 30 inches thick and seam analyses show an ash content of from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. In the Bradford mine the undercut is about 6 inches high, so that a large proportion of fines is produced."

The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970&apos;s attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses. This Bureau of Mines publication comprises 19 tables of data concerning domestic barite production and consumption, imports, and world production for the years 1880 to 1976. Barite is vital to the petroleum industry, with 90 percent of domestic consumption used in drilling muds. Domestic production has traditionally fallen short of consumption: in 1976, 41 percent of the 2.2 million tons consumed was imported. World production of barite increased from 269,000 tons in 1923 to 5.2 million tons in 1975 but is in danger of falling short of future demand. The compiled data provide a comprehensive base of information.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia&apos;s geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and N02 fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau&apos;s large closed gallery facility (7.2 X 104 liter expansion chamber) and in the standard Crawshaw-Jones apparatus (90--liter expansion shamber) using a prepackaged charge configuration containing about 450 g of explosive.4 The theoretical calculation of toxic fumes was achieved with an equilibrium detonation code called "TIGER,," Contrary to initial expectations, the NOx (= NO + N02) fumes from the large gallery test were found to be in essential agreement with the Crawshaw-Jones results. It was also concluded that (1) "TIGER" calculations offer a good approach to the prediction of toxic fumes; (2) there is a basic problem in extrapolating laboratory measurements of CO fumes to mine conditions--this being due to postdetonation oxidation of CO to CO2; and (3) the detonation velocity decay rate of an explosive is a useful experimental parameter for correlating toxic fumes production with nonideal detonation behavior.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an interactive computer program that enables mine operators and others to identify the effect of cut-ting system changes on relative dustiness at the face. The program, which simultaneously evaluates machine parameters, coal seam parame-ters, and operator-controllable parameters, was developed for use on any microcomputer using BASIC programming language. The program allows the user to change one or more of the cutting system parameters at a time to see how these changes affect relative dustiness. A complete program listing and flowchart are included along with operating in-structions and sample outputs. An example showing how to use the program is also included.
