The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a large-scaJe facility to study the self-heating of a large coal mass under conditions that simulate a gob area of a mine. The insulated coal chamber can hold up to 13 short tons (st) of coal and is provided with a forced ventilation system and computer-controlled temperature and gas measurement systems to monitor the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in the coalbed. Three experiments were completed with high-volatile C bituminous coals that exhibited high spontaneous combustion potentials in laboratory-scale tests. In the first two tests, a sustained heating was not achieved. In the third test, temperatures throughout the coalbed increased steadily from the start, with thermal runaway occurring near the center of the coalbed after 23 days. The thermal reaction wne then moved toward the front of the coalbed. The results of these tests showed that the self-heating of a large coal mass depends not just on the reactivity of the coal, but also on the particle size of the coal, the freshness of the coal surfaces, the heat-of-wetting effect, and the availability of O2 at optimum ventilation rates.

Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

Since the beginning of this century Boliden Mineral and Atlas Copco have worked together in stages on improving the accuracy and quality of drilling. Navigation of the drill rigs with IREDES has been in use in the Boliden mines for several years. Recently the capability of the system has extended with map navigation to more accurately follow the ore in cut&fill mines. The system allows for changes on the individual round level to follow the ore without changing the whole design for the heading. Those changes are done in a CAD-system and remove the need for face markings and will allow for even better accuracy in both height and wall position. All the information between the CAD-system and the drill rigs is exchanged using the IREDES standard. This paper describes the workflow and the use of the IREDES standard.

The owners of large infrastructure projects are challenged on how to implement sound engineering and construction contracting strategies that address their prime expectations: a quality job, on time and within budget. With the increasing number of large engineering and construction projects worldwide, owners continue to search for alternative contracting strategies to address their risk, quality, sustainability (operability and performance), schedule, and budget concerns. Coupled with the shortage of resources, delays, political pressures, and other obstacles in procurement and negotiation processes, engineers and contractors are also looking for creative ways to optimize contract packaging strategies for efficient and successful project delivery. This paper compiles an array of decision making criteria and suggests a balanced evaluation, ranking and selection strategy in procurement of both engineering and construction services for large tunneling and other infrastructure projects. A number of owners? general preferences and viewpoints are discussed on large tunnel programs encompassing water and wastewater conveyance systems, pump stations and treatment facility upgrades. Contract packaging strategies and project phasing and segmenting alternatives for preliminary engineering, final design, construction management, and actual construction of facilities are featured for several large water and wastewater infrastructure projects. While the selection (and the relevant selection process and criteria) and performance of service providers, whether for engineering or construction, have profound effects on the outcome of any given project, this paper only examines strategies for con-tract packaging. More specifically, the authors evaluated case studies and developed a range of recommendations for packaging of large water and wastewater infrastructure projects with multiple components.

Continuing progress in a petroleum and natural gas research program of world-wide significance makes it difficult to pinpoint accomplishments within definite time limits, and it is helpful to look back as well as forward in attempting to introduce and summarize the petroleum work of the Bureau of Mines in the fiscal year 1953. The 1952 report2 / indicated progress in a long-range program applicable in large part to both defense and peacetime requirements. The present report indicates a continuation of that program, modified partly by new demands and interests of government and industry, and is highlighted by a number of significant contributions to the knowledge of petroleum and natural gas and their production and utilization. The intent of the program was clearly epitomized in a statement made near the end of the fiscal year at a general conference of Bureau of Mines personnel where the record was critically reviewed:

The effects of adding varying amounts of type I portland cement to hydraulic backfill are described. Six different fill materials, each with three cement contents, were tested to determine which fill properties have the most significant effect on cemented strength. Two strength prediction equations, based on the physical and mineralogical properties of the fills, were formulated, and these accounted for 96 and 99 percent of the variability of the data. Results of both unconfined compression and triaxial tests of cemented fills are given, and the effects of moist curing and fill densification on the 7-day strength are discussed. Permeability test data are given, and the decreased permeability due to cement content and curing time is shown graphically. A discussion of the limited evaluation of other potential stabilization additives (expansive cement, fly ash, sodium silicate, gypsum, and asphalt) is included in an appendix.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. Slag from stainless steelmaking is known to disintegrate, which is an environmental problem and prevents the cooled slag from being utilized. This disintegration is due to the transformation from the ßto the ? polymorph of di-calcium silicate. The transformation is accompanied by an increase in volume of about 11% and a total disintegration of the slag. AOD slag from stainless steelmaking was re-melted in a laboratory induction furnace, together with olivine and calcinated dolomite, to investigate the prevention of disintegration by increased MgO content of the slag with small changes in CaO to SiO2ratio. The modified slag was examined with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The trials showed that an increased MgO content can change the mineral composition towards formation of more Merwinite and Bredigite, which prevents disintegration of the slag. The Quaternary Age aeolian dune sands of the Sibaya Formation on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast are well known for their heavy mineral content. Although ilmenite, rutile and zircon are the economically important members of the heavy mineral suite, many other nonsilicate minerals such as monazite, xenotime, chromite, magnetite, and spinel that are normally considered to be eitherun common or even rare are also present and these sands provide a unique opportunity to study such complex minerals. Monazite is the general term used for a complex series of rare earth phosphates dominated by lanthanum, cerium and neodymium with monazite-Ce, monazite-La and monazite-Nd recognized as distinct end members of the solid solution series. In addition to the elements indicated by the simplified formulae (LaCeNd) PO4monazite can also accept significant quantities of other elements from the lanthanide and actinide series (Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy,Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Th, Pa, U, Np). The monazite grains in the Sibaya Formation occur as both composite grains, composed of two or more distinct mineral phases, and homogeneous grains. The net physical properties of the composite grains, and their response to magnetic and electrostatic separation methods are related to size and composition of non-monazite component. However, the homogeneous monazite grains also display significant variation in their physical properties related to their chemical composition.

"Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

Ballast Nedam is in Surinam constructing two bridges that will improve communications in the coastal region. The bridges will cross the Coppenam and Surinam rivers and will be founded on open-ended steel piles over 60 meters in length. The majority of piles are inclined and support prefabricated concrete girders forming the roadway. In most locations the stratum is consolidated cohesive layers extending to a depth in excess of 60 meters. For this reason, before pile driving operations commenced, it was decided that a number of test loads would be carried out determine the capacity of the piles. Loading tests were carried out on specially installed piles as well as on piles that would be used as working piles to support the structure. Working piles were dynamically tested using Pile Driving Analysis (PDA) equipment. This decision was based on the inclination of the piles, the cohesive nature of the soil and the increase of strength after the piles are driven. A good insight has been obtained into the real strength of the soil by comparing dynamic and static loading tests on vertical test piles. This made it possible to determine the required length of pile.

In the United States the performance characteristics of permissible explosives are controlled by routine tests, which include firing the explosive into a gallery filled with a methane-air mixture. These tests are made by the staff-of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines and are similar, in general, to those employed in other countries. This control has helped to reduce the frequency of accidents involving the ignition of firedamp by explosives but has not clarified the basic causes of the ignition. To advance this control and to minimize potential hazards further, this fundamental knowledge is needed. Some of the results of recent research on the causes of the ignition are described herein. NATURE OF THE PROBLEM When an explosive ignites firedamp in the gallery tests, the source of the ignition must be one or more of the emissions from the steel borehole. It has been accepted generally that these emissions are (1) particles, (2) the shock wave, and (3) hot gases and flames. Photographs show that the shock wave emerges from the borehole first, followed closely by hot gases. At first the velocities of these are high and approximately equal, but the velocity of the gases decreases more rapidly than that of the shock wave, and by the time the reactions causing the flame are complete the shock wave travels in an otherwise undisturbed medium. The particles are originally enveloped in the hot gases but some soon begin to break through and eventually out-distance the shock wave. The approximate geometry of these emissions about 1 millisecond after the shot is fired is illustrated in figure

The analysis of subsidence due to the opening of an underground void (mining, water exploitation or civil works hole) is a problem usually hard to solve. First of all, it requires a predictive model, in order to define both the displacement magnitude and area affected by subsidence. Such model should be validated with measurements of the actual movements sustained on the surface, in order to adjust it properly and enable influence of future behaviour in a reliable way. Two different kinds of problems might arise. On one side, it is necessary to control and measure surface movements in a very exhaustive way during a long period of time, beginning before underground works take place and finishing years after they are over. Furthermore, three factors bring in errors, some times of magnitudes higher than the displacement magnitudes measured. These include: the fact that reliable and long-term information cannot always be achieved; the precision of measuring devices; and the design of the topographical network itself. In addition, the predictive models more widely used only apply to certain excavation geometries, mainly to horizontal holes. In light of this background, the Group of Rock Engineering, of the University of Oviedo Mining Department, has developed a working methodology and a specific software tool, Subsidence 3D, to estimate ground displacements and strains. The program will allow for predictive models to be defined and also allows the treatment of data related with topographical marks and its comparative analysis with calculated results. The software has been programmed using Visual C++. Graphical outputs however are generated using AutoCAD 2000. This paper mainly refers to a practical situation, an underground coalmine, remarking the main difficulties arisen during the study of the available information and proposing how to solve them. "The Phase I Mill at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan was designed to accommodate a very specific high grade uranium ore. As this high grade ore was depleted, construction was undertaken on a new mill circuit (Phase 2) to process a more conventional lower grade ore deposit.The Phase 2 Mill expanded the ore throughput to 800 tonnes per day. The new process employs crushing, grinding, leaching, counter—current decantation, solvent extraction and magnesia yellowcake precipitation and drying to produce a yellowcake concentrate.This paper discusses the process decisions required for this expansion and outlines the new mill circuit. Included is a review of the start up in August, 1984.1.,INTRODUCTION The Cluff Lake Uranium deposit is located 720 kilometers north of Saskatoon in northern Saskatchewan. A high grade deposit was discovered in 1970 with the first production taking place in 1980 after lengthy hearings. The original mill (or Phase 1 Mill) was specifically designed to accommodate this very high grade ore for a very limited plant life.Pilot plant work was carried out in 1981 on the other lower grade ores found in the immediate Cluff Lake area. Feasibility and process selection studies were then undertaken as the Phase 1 mill was nearing its end of life. These studies were completed in March 1983 when approval was given to construct the new Phase 2 mill."

One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated two different conventionallongwall gate entry systems in the Southern Appalachian Basin, where mining and geologic conditions are conducive for coal pillar bumps. These gate entry systems were in a coal mine located in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed under approximately 2,000 ft of overburden and a massive quartzite sandstone member, and both employed a center abutment pillar flanked by yield pillars. The 8O-ft-square tailgate abutment pillars within the first study area began bumping 500 ft in advance of mining. This was accompanied by face bumps on the tailgate corner of the longwall face. The 120-by 180-ft tailgate abutment pillars within the second study area did not begin to bump until mining was approximately 100 ft past. Coalbed stress change and abutment pillar dilation data demonstrated that a 15-ft-wide perimeter of yielded coal surrounded a highly stressed core in both sizes of abutment pillars. The 62 pet more core area per foot of gate entry in the larger abutment pillars prevented excessive load transfer to the corner of the tailgate panel and eliminated the face bumps experienced with the original gate entry design.

Selection of a suitable coal or coals for the manufacture of coke of desired quality with due consideration of the purpose for which the coke is intended requires careful thought, and often it will pay to go to consider able expense in testing such coals as may be available. In general it will always be possible to obtain a satisfactory coal or blend of coals for the particular purpose in view, but in some places the cost of transportation would be prohibitive. It may then be necessary to consider a coal or coals inferior in grade, rank, or both. At times, in fact, only one inferior coal may be available, when the problem becomes mainly one of selecting equipment and operating conditions best adapted to that coal, keeping in mind that the end product of the plant must compete with the imported product in the market the plant will serve. This applies particularly to new projects for which it is necessary to build a plant and start with a clean slate, so to speak. However, it will pay every coke-plant manager to employ a force to continually test the coals used and the coke produced to make sure that the quality is not changing appreciably. Furthermore, if the supply of coals used becomes exhausted it will be necessary to use other coals. Continual testing is particularly necessary at plants using borderline coals or blends, where slight changes in the composition or in operation of the ovens may render them dangerously expanding. In this connection it should be stated that control in the newer coke plants is considerably easier than for those built a decade or so ago, consequently in the new ovens a given operating program can be maintained more precisely. This point is important, because one of the main requirements of the coke user is uniformity in both physical and chemical characteristics. For example, any appreciable changes in the quality of coke delivered to the blast?-furnace operator will involve changes in operation if the best results are to be obtained. Such changes are expensive usually they take considerable time and involve production of inferior iron.

The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. A series of small-scale tests was conducted to evaluate the effect of micro-fracture development, imposed by blasting, on the material properties of the rock as well as its resistance to crushing and grinding. The uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, Poisson’s ratio, Pwave, S-wave velocity, point load test index, crushing, and grinding work indices were evaluated for samples without any blasting load and for samples which had received a variety of blast loads ranging from a single impact with a lowstrength detonating cord to a combination of impacts at different times and significant impacts with powder factors close to those used in practical blasts. It was shown that the rock mechanics parameters change even at low impacts, suggesting easier crushing of the rock. Damage values appear to be affected by timing as stress wave superposition affects the damage process. Fragmentation is achieved at higher impact levels while work index modification of the fragments is also observed when high powder factors are used, suggesting improvements in grinding.
