As mining operations progress toward tele-mining and autonomous procedures, the need for machine performance monitoring increases. Presently, through a combination of vision, sound, and other subjective observations, an operator attempts to optimize the mechanical excavator’s operation. As the operator is moved away from the face in the case of tele-mining or completely removed for autonomous operation, the qualitative sensory input is lost. This lost information must be replaced with quantifiable sensory input. Chip formation detection may be a suitable replacement sensory input. Chip formation can be predicted with high confidence (>80%) through the analysis of the load waveform associated with the bit/rock interface.

Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.

Mantoverde Division of Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos S.A., Anglo American Chile, developed an open pit mine to exploit copper oxide ore. Mantoverde mine is located in the Province of Chañaral, Northern Chile, about 1,020 Km far from Santiago. Currently, the East wall of the mine is reaching the condition of final pit. To evaluate the possibility of a pit optimization on this wall a geotechnical study was performed, including slope stability analyses by limit equilibrium and numerical methods. As a result of this geotechnical evaluation, it was decided to allow a probability of failure of 12% for instabilities affecting up to 600,000 tonnes, and use steeper slopes on the East Wall of the mine. This paper describes this geotechnical evaluation and how the results of the stability analyses were used to define a flexible slope design, which allows modification if the observed slope behaviour deviated from the expected one.

The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

A bulk mineral analyser (BMA) suitable for the determination of Cu or Ni in bulk ore samples has been developed at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories. This analyser, which uses the nuclear resonance scattering technique, is highly specific to the wanted element. The technique has previously been extensively field tested for copper at Mount Isa, Queensland.The present paper discusses the field trial in 1982 of a commercial prototype BMA for nickel. The trial was undertaken at the lateritic nickel mine at Greenvale, Queensland. The BMA and its shielding, together with a laboratory spectrum analyser, were sited in the sample shed adjacent to the workings. Two hundred and thirty-eight ore samples taken directly from the mine blastholes were assayed by the BMA. The average mass of sample was 12 kg, metal contents varied from 0.2 to 3.5 wt/per cent Ni and 4 to 43 wt/per cent Fe and free moisture varied from 11 to 55 wt/per cent. A measurement took 10 min to complete, although this time could have been reduced at the higher nickel grades. The r.m.s. deviation between BMA and chemical assays was 0.09 wt/per cent nickel. Iron and bulk density were also determined by the BMA, r.m.s. deviations being 1.7 wt/per cent and 0.03 g/cmJ respectively. Similar results could be expected from a BMA in routine industrial use at other nickel mines.

It is commonly accepted that the tension of roof bolts can be used as a measure of the effectiveness of roof support performance in coal bearing strata. The conceptual base for the assumption originates from beam theory. Roof bolt tension acting across the bedding and other weakness planes increases friction, preventing potential separation and slippage within the roof strata and therefore, increases the stiffness of the roof beam between the open face and the rock-mass enclosed within the anchorage. Thus, it is important to monitor roof bolt tension, especially for research purposes, and consequently many measuring systems were developed based on numerous working principles. Research planned by the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky required a large number of tension measuring devices of high precision. These were intended to operate reliably in corrosive mine environment over long periods of time. After evaluating the existing systems, it was decided to develop a new type of roof bolt dynamometer which would fulfill the above requirements at minimal Cost. Nearly one hundred such dynamometers were constructed, calibrated and installed in two underground mines. They remained in service for a period of one Year, producing a valuable database for the Project. In this paper the working principle of this new type of dynamometer will be described and technical considerations and samples of the collected data will be given.

The United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for the storage and use of Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) in underground non-coal mines. An SCSR is a device capable of supplying, in an emergency, one hour of self-contained oxygen (no breathing of mine air). The information and recommendations in this report were developed primarily from three sources: discussions with mine representatives (including management, labor, and government), site visits in underground mines I and a detailed analysis of every reported non-coal accident which produced d hazardous atmosphere during the 5-year period 1976-1980 -plus ten other major incidents from prior years. Volume IV has three major sections: Recommendations and Discussion (Section 2), Analysis of Mine Accidents (Appendix A), and a Summary of Discussions with Mine Representatives (Appendix B).

The recovery of natural gas (primarily methane) from coalbed deposits is an established and growing source for the U.S and accounts for over 7% of its total production. The gas from on-purpose degassing is often pipeline quality and requires only compression and dehydration before being admitted to the pipeline grid. However, the raw gas is sometimes contaminated with nitrogen (N2) and/or carbon dioxide (CO2) that can make the gas inadmissible to the transportation pipeline. In general, the N2 must be 4% or less and the CO2 should be 2% or less. In treating gas produced from virgin coal bed or from degassing operations where CO2 is present, amine systems are traditionally used for its removal. Engelhard’s Molecular Gate® adsorption system offers an attractive alternative due to its skid-mounted equipment, low pressure and unattended operation, cost and high on-stream reliability. Natural gas can also be sourced from the residual coal, after the coal has been mined. This source can be the GOB or gas remaining in abandoned coal mines. This source is almost universally contaminated, often with a combination of CO2 and N2. If the source is from air intrusion, the source can also be contaminated with O2. In treating CO2 / N2 contaminated feeds, the Molecular Gate adsorption system removes both of the impurities along with a level of O2 within a single processing step. To date, ten Molecular Gate units are underway with three systems having been installed for upgrading gas from abandoned coal mines. The technology consists of specialty adsorbents and advanced PSA processes that are jointly offered as fabricated packaged equipment by Engelhard Corporation and Guild Associates, Inc. Upgrading requirements, project challenges and project arrangements are discussed in this paper.

With a price slowly rising above US$35 per ounce gold became a mineral worthy of prospecting and mining endeavour in the early to mid 1970s. Fortune therefore appeared to smile onNew Zealand with its favourable geological environment for gold and past record of major gold production from both hard rock and placer deposits. This was a particularly welcome development as the post war years, including both the base metal exploration boom of 1967/1971 (which produced major nickel, iron and bauxite mines in Australia) and the earlier period of uranium exploration failed to produce any mines in New Zealand with the exception of the small Tui Mine and iron sand mining. Whilst hard rock mining now appears imminent it is 15 years further along the track since the 1967/1971 exploration boom and eight years since the upsurge in prospecting for gold in 1978. New Zealand still has no hard rock base or precious metal mining. This is not for want of proven or potential gold mining situations for these clearly exist at Waihi, Monowai Reef, Golden Cross, MacRaes Flat and elsewhere.

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

This paper describes a method of conducting rapid lateral loading tests of deep foundations in which the load is applied to the foundation with a time duration of less than one second. For purposes of this paper the loading is applied using a pyrotechnic loading system commonly referred to as Statnamic. However, the method should apply to any lateral loading system which produces a force time history with a loading duration of 20 msec to 1 second. The test provides a measure of the dynamic and static response of the soil/foundation system and must be evaluated as a dynamic loading. Interpretation of the test includes a simple single degree of freedom (SDOF) model which can account for the inertial effects of foundation mass, system damping, and static foundation stiffness. The results of the test measurements are compared with four case histories in which comparative static load test data are available, including pile group foundations and large diameter drilled shaft foundations.

To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. The experimental points which describe capillary pressure curves are determined at apparent equilibria which are observed after bydrodynamic flow has ceased. For most systems, the time required to obtain equalization of pressure throughout the discontinuous part of a phase is prohibitive. To permit experimental points to be described as equilibria, a model of capillary behavior is proposed where mass transfer is restricted to bulk fluid flow. Model capillary pressure curves follow if the path described by such points is independent of the rate at which the saturation was changed to attain a capillary pressure point. Aemodified suction potential technique is used to study cyclic relationships between capillary pressure and moisture content for a porous mass. The time taken to complete an experiment was greatly reduced by using small samples. INTRODUCTION Capillary retention of liquid by porous materials has been investigated in the fields of hydrology,l soil science,2 oil reservoir engineering,3 chemical engineering," soil mechanics,5 textiles: paper making: and building materials In studies of the immiscible displacement of one fluid by another within a porous bed, drainage columnsl and suction potential techniques2 have been used to obtain relationships between pressure deficiency and saturation (Fig. 1). Except where there is no hysteresis of contact angle and the solid is of simple geometry, such as a tube of uniform cross section, there is hysteresis in the relationship between capillary pressure and saturation.2 The relationship which has received most attention is displacement of fluid from an initially saturated bed (Fig. 1, Curve R2), the final condition being an irreducible minimum fluid saturation Swr. Imbibition (Fig. 1, Curve A), further desaturation (Fig. 1, Curve R), and intermediate scanning curves have been studied to a lesser but increasing extent.2 ,3,9-12 This paper first considers the nature of the experimental points tracing the capillary pressure curves with respect to the modes and rates of mass transfer which are operative during the course of measurement. There are clear indications that the experimental points which describe these curves are obtained at apparent equilibria which are observed when viscous fluid flow has ceased; and any further changes in the fluid distribution are the result of much slower mass transfer processes, such as diffusion. Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Oxygen isotope analysis indicates that quartz, carbonates and muscovite could all have formed in near-isotopic equilibrium with the mildly saline H2O-CO2 ore fluid at 330 degrees C. Calculated values for O, C and S in the ore fluids imply derivation from a deep, homogeneous source region and are consistent with formation either as a direct or an indirect result of igneous processes. Values for delta-O18 plot a little outside the accepted magmatic range, but have almost certainly been modified by exchange reactions with wall rocks. These reactions were also the most likely cause of deposition of the ore constituents. The chemical and isotopic character of the fluid was similar to that in many Archaean and later mesothermal auriferous vein systems, especially the Mother Lode region of California. First, a definition of a small scale miner is in order. The US Bureau of Mines classifies him as one who produces 360 t/d (400 stpd) of ore or less. In Canada, he would be refered to as a "junior company." Mexico identifies the small scale miner as one whose gross income from operations is less than $880,000 per year. A small surface mine in India employs less than 400 people, and a small underground mine employs less than 150. Peru considers a small scale miner one who produces less than 54 000 t/y (60,000 stpy) of ore. Obviously, the term is relative. What may be a small mine in one country is a medium or large mine in another. This lack of agreement is understandable since small scale mining does not often cross national boundaries. Rather, its effects are felt at the regional and local levels within each nation. Its importance doesn&apos;t lie with any huge contribution to the GNP or balance of trade. Instead, its value is as a local employer and as a frontrunner in geologic exploration.
