The one-pass tunneling pipe jacking method has often been the most schedule and cost efficient method for the pipe line installation. The main challenges in jacking pipes larger than 108 inches and for longer runs are: transportation and logistics, requiring high jacking forces, keeping line and grades, control of ground surface settlement, providing adequate external lubrication, and the potential of damaging the joints and pipe spigots. In recent years, 144" diameter pipes have been jacked for short runs of up to only 300 feet. In this article design and construction of installation of up to 1,000 linear feet run of 144-inch internal diameter, reinforced concrete pipes without intermediate jacking station in Chicago O?Hare International Airport are discussed. The article also presents discussions regarding the subsurface saturated silt formation, shallow cover, dewatering, jacking and receiving shafts, jacking forces, lubrication and settlement data.

The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magnetohydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

This paper proposes the further development of a recently identified shear rupture mechanism (fan mechanism) that elucidates a paradoxical feature of hard rocks ? the possibility of shear rupture propagation through a highly confined intact rock mass at shear stresses that can be significantly less than frictional strength. In the fan mechanism, failure is associated with consecutive creation of small slabs (known as ?domino blocks?) from the intact rock in the rupture tip, driven by a fan-shaped domino structure representing the rupture head. The fan head combines such unique features as extremely low shear resistance, self-sustaining stress intensification, and self-unbalancing conditions. Consequently, the failure process caused by the mechanism is inevitably spontaneous and violent. Physical and mathematical models explain unique and paradoxical features of the mechanism, which can be generated in primary ruptures and segmented faults. The fan mechanism provides a novel point of view for understanding the nature of spontaneous failure processes, including shear rupture rockbursts. The process explains, in particular, features of shear rupture rockbursts such as activation at great depths, generation of new shear ruptures in intact rock mass, nucleation of hypocentres at significant distances from the excavation, shear rupture development at low shear stresses, and abnormal rupture violence.

Whereas many researchers and mine engineers have conducted tests on cable bolts using various grouts, water: cement ratios, and physical modifications of the cable to determine the load-carrying characteristics ofa bolt, few studies have been conducted on cable bolts fitted with internal instruments. Those studies that have been done have concentrated on cable response averaged over significant (6.1 m) cable lengths. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Spokane, WA, are investigating the physical properties of cable bolts by replacing the conventional king wire with a modified king wire on which strain gauges have been installed. A numerical analysis was performed to match laboratory results. Loads calculated by the model were then compared to loads measured in the laboratory on 1.83-m-long cables grouted into two 0.91-m-long pull-tube assemblies. Load along the cable was monitored with 20 strain gauges installed along the length of the cable. This paper documents test results on these modified cable bolts. The instrumented cable bolt provided reproducible point measurements of cable load as opposed to load measurements averaged over long cable lengths. Such point measurements can assist in interpreting the influence of cable confinement, grout quality, rock mass stiffness, and other factors. The instrumented cable bolt is a practical field and research tool because it can predict point loading along the cable. The instrument has been successfully field tested at FMC's Granger Mine, Granger, WY; the Meikle Mine, Carlin, NV; the Stillwater Mine, Nye, MT; and the Getchell Mine, Golconda, NV. By monitoring load and displacement of the rock mass using these instrumented bolts, more-effective ground support can be selected and installed, which will lead to safer working conditions for miners.

Drilled displacement piles were constructed as the foundation for a proposed 10-story building in San Francisco, California. At the study location, the stratigraphy consists of 14 to 21 feet of fill and 13 to 23 feet of weak, compressible clay (?Bay Mud?), underlain by dense sand, stiff clay, and bedrock. A sensitive critical public utility is located within approximately 20 feet of the constructed piles along one side of the building. The utility pipeline is entirely within the Bay Mud where it is adjacent to the project site. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) developed limits on the allowable total and differential movement of the utility pipeline. As requested by the SFPUC, inclinometers and piezometers were installed to monitor the soil movement and pore pressure increases in the Bay Mud caused by the installation of drilled displacement piles. Action levels were set such that if displacement and/or pore pressures reached an action level, the installation methodology would be reevaluated and additional measures to reduce these effects would be implemented. This paper will present the sequence of pile installation near the pipeline and monitoring points, and the data collected from inclinometers and piezometers at variable depths and distances from the piles. The data will highlight the build-up and dissipation of pore pressures over time and the displacement of Bay Mud caused by the pile installation. The conclusions of the study are useful in determining sequencing, spacing, predrilling, and other measures that can be implemented to decrease the displacement potential and pore pressure build-up in soft clays.

Full-scale marker experiments at Cadia Valley underground operations have been ongoing for over 14 years. Initial marker experiments were undertaken in the Ridgeway sublevel cave (RW) (2002), and subsequently at Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) (2008) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) (2012) block caves. Over 25 000 markers have been installed at the three caving operations to date (approximately 20 000, 3000 and 2500 for RW, RWD and CEPC1 respectively). These experiments aimed to quantify and assess the geometry of the extraction zone, development of the extraction zone over time, variability of flow behaviour and factors affecting flow behaviour in both the near and far field cave column. This paper discusses marker recovery results from the RWD and CEPC1 caves.With respect to the two cave operations, marker recovery in both the near field (markers recovered vertically within 70 m of the extraction level) and far field (markers recovered vertically above 70 m of the extraction level) indicates disturbed flow behaviour where marker recovery is not spatially uniform during material extraction. Two distinct patterns or transient behaviours in the extraction zone are indicated. For RWD (advanced undercut), early material recovery was close to the major apex, and expanded towards the centre of the drawbell as more material was extracted. The inverse was observed for CEPC1 (post undercut), where recovery occurred in the centre of the drawbell initially, and expanded outwards towards the major apex. This trend of recovery for the two operations continued in the far field. In the region above the major apex, recovery was observed for all heights, with no clear height of interaction zone (HIZ) indicated. All of these behaviours significantly deviate from both conventional ellipsoidal flow theory and Laubscher’s (2000) design guidelines. For this reason these new mechanisms are termed the Disturbed Extraction Zone (DEZ).For the CEPC1 marker experiment, electronic markers were utilised to investigate the vector movement of material in the near field. Marker recovery movement vectors in the near field indicate extraction zone widths in the order 30 m, with localised marker recovery outside this region (significant horizontal movement of material potentially due to cave muck pile rilling and blast burden movement). The most important development that has been taking place recently relating to mining operations in New Zealand would generally be regarded as being the Resource Management Law Reform. This has been widely publicised by the Government as a comprehensive review of the laws governing New Zealand's natural and physical resources. Submissions have been sought and a free phone provided to encourage public participation. Recently a Discussion Paper has been prepared by the Core Group coordinating the review to explain progress on Phase One (Ministry for the Environment, Directions for Change: A Discussion Paper, Wellington 1988). It outlines Government decisions already taken which impinge on the Review and describes the possible models for resource management laws. However, it is possible that some fundamental practical issues of significance to the mining industry will not be addressed and may be lost sight of in the much wider issues which are to be covered. The purpose of our paper is to address one of these issues namely, the interrelationship between any new resource management legislation and the Conservation Act 1987 (as recently amended) in the context of Ministerial consents. The importance of this issue can be seen from the fact that as at 7 June 1988 there were 279 mining licence applications and 223 prospecting licence applications waiting to be determined by the Minister of Conservation. Since April 1987 only 19 mining and 13 prospecting licences have been consented to. In addition a major proportion of New Zealand's mineral resources are contained with land administered by the Department.

El presente trabajo explica el panorama historiográfico del proyectoToquepala, -en tanto proyecto industrial de la historia minera del cobre-, así como su influencia en el desarrollo económico y manufacturero del Perú. El depósito mineral de Toquepala está situado en el departamente de Tacna, zona sur del país. El reconocimiento como zona cuprífera es partir de Velarde en La Minería enel Perú (1908) y Basadre en Estado actual y porvenir de la industria minera en los departamentos del sur del Perú (1918). Posteriormente en 1937, Juan Oviedo de Villegas denunció los depósitos en Toquepala y fue el geólogo Schmedeman de la cerro de Pasco Corporation, quien reconoció la mina como un depósito de pórfido de cobre. Es a partir de 1938 que se inicia la explotación y en 1948, la Northern Peru Mining and Smelting Company se hace propietario de la zona minera. La exploración del depósito de Toquepala se realizó por medio de taladros verticales, perforados con máquinas de diamantina y de percusión. Durante el periodo de perforación, se realiza un sondaje de percusión previo que determina la extensión hacia otros hoyos para muestrear los valores y así medir la capa y espesor del mineral, mientras que el sondaje diamantino informa sobre la interpretación geológica del subsuelo de esa sección. Para la comprobación de los resultados de la perforacíón se buscó comparar los resultados de perforaciones de diámetro pequeños y grandes, con aquellos del minado del mineral en volúmenes de muestras relativamente grandes. Los métodos de muestreo empleados fueron acorde a las prácticas más estrictas actualmente recomendadas en este tipo de trabajos y supervisados bajo el control de un personal técnico. Luego del trabajo de comprobación del depósito de Toquepala, a mediados del año 1955, se unieron cuatro compañías para formar la Southern Peru Copper Corporation y en ese mismo año el gobierno peruano aprueba el desarrollo del programa y operación de este proyecto . Los planes de minado fueron terminados en 1955 minero. El avance de los trabajos de preparación de este proyecto se realiza a través de dos partes: la construcción de los servicios necesarios para la operación y los trabajos de preparación preliminares a la explotación minera. El ajuste de constucción y minado del programa se culminó en cuatro años (1952 - 1954), dando inicio a la operación en 1955. Finalmente, hablar la inflluencia del proyecto de Toquepala en el desarrollo económico industrial en el sur del Perú, es señalar su apoyo en el manejo de las vías de comunicación, favoreciendo el intercambio comercial entre las zonas ganaderas de la sierra de Tacna, Moquegua y el resto del país, así como del progreso de pequeñas industrias. El acceso a la educación y la erradicación de bajas condiciones sanitarias son elementos que también ayudan al avance social de la población, otorgándole a este proyecto sureño, un lugar importante en el panorama industrial y minero del país.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."

Southern Copper Corporation (SCC) is one of the world’s largest copper companies and is finishing the modernization of the Ilo copper smelter. A single ISASMELTTM furnace will start smelting 1,200,000 tons per year of concentrate at the end of 2006. Three existing Peirce Smith converters are being upgraded plus a new one for converting the matte to blister copper is being installed. Two new anode furnaces and a twin anode casting wheel have being operating since January 2006. This represents one of the main changes in the process because the final product of the smelter is now anode copper instead of blister copper. A new oxygen plant, acid plant, and others facilities are in the ramp-up stage. This environmental project will ensure that the new smelter will comply with the environmental regulations of Peru by the end of January 2007. This paper summarizes the background to the modernization project, describes the different stages of the project including engineering, procurement and construction, describes the main areas of the new copper smelter and also the pre-operational testing, commissioning and start-up of them. This is a brown field project with a target of reducing as much as possible the production losses of the existing operation. This paper presents the details of the development of the Ilo Smelter Modernization Project and explains the main aspects of the new facilities, the products to be obtained and the associated facilities for their commercialization, including a Marine Trestle for bulk acid exportation.

The installation of the George Fisher flowsheet in the lead/zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The George Fisher flowsheet involved moving flotation capacity from the lead circuit to the zinc circuit and changes in zinc circuitry, changes in the reagent regime and increased regrinding capacity, using IsaMills, to regrind some streams to 80 per cent passing seven microns. The project was highly successful, delivering a five per cent increase in zinc recovery within a fortnight of commissioning. The George Fisher flowsheet was developed over six years. Laboratory work built upon the knowledge gained from investigating and processing the Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion of the existing lead/zinc concentrator had significant involvement from the operational, maintenance and technical personnel. Experienced personnel were seconded from the concentrator to the design and construction groups to ensure smooth integration of the new flowsheet into the existing concentrator with minimum downtime, and maximising the reuse of existing equipment. The combination of thorough design, good project integration with operations, and a good commissioning plan allowed almost immediate delivery of project gains. The project was highly successful, the full design improvements were achieved within two weeks, allowing the focus to move to developing future improvements.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

Development of Process for Beneficiation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Samples from Orissa, India The paper deals with the results of characterisation and beneficiations studies undertaken on two low-grade Indian iron ore samples (IO-1 and IO-2) with a view to develop process for beneficiation of composite of the two samples to a high-grade concentrate, suitable for iron making through pelletisation. Indian iron ores contain relatively high iron but cost effective reduction of alumina within the specified limits has been a challenging task. Characterisation of the samples revealed the ore to be laminated and fine grained with hematite as the major mineral. Clay is the dominating gangue in most of the ore pieces followed by silica. Occasionally goethite and quartz/jasper were recorded. Clay occurs either as patches within the hematite mass or as cavity/fracture fillings. Liberation studies on the representative samples crushed to 2 mm indicated that around 95 per cent of the grains are liberated below 105 micron. Beneficiation of the two individual samples and their composite based on gravity and magnetic separation techniques resulted in products with varying yield and grade of the products. The effects of various process parameters were studied. Granulometry of the feed was observed to be important for improving quality of concentrate. The results of bench-scale studies were validated through pilot-scale continuous trials. Based on the studies undertaken a suitable process was developed for beneficiation of the composite sample, comprising 60 per cent IO-1 and 40 per cent IO-2, to a high-grade product assaying over 65 per cent Fe and material balance was computed. A commercial plant for beneficiation of low-grade iron ore to produce DRI pellet grade concentrate is proposed to be installed.

"The Rietveld numerical method was used to calculate the relative abundances of phases in both synthetic binary mixtures and synthetic and natural ores, using X-ray diffraction data. The results were compared with those of image analysis and a chemical method. The ranges of the relative errors were estimated. The Rietveld method is found to be acceptable for determining the abundances of major and minor phases and the amorphous component of partially crystalline samples. In complex mixtures, where there are several trace phases (~<2 wt%) present, the technique becomes less accurate. It is most useful as an alternative technique to image analysis when sample preparation is problematic or sample particle sizes are sub-micron. It is a manual method which requires user input during the fitting process, but is both simpler and faster than image analysis due to the reduced set up time and sample preparation required. It is now implemented at CANMET as a technique for quantitative analysis.INTRODUCTIONUntil recently, the Applied Mineralogy group at CANMET used only image analysis and chemical techniques to determine phase quantities. An effort to develop quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been on-going for several years. Initially, the reference intensity ratio (RIR) method with external standards was tried with some success (Szymanski and Petruk, 1989). The main difficulty with this technique was finding adequate standard material for each phase present in the sample. This shortcoming made the method ultimately impractical, given the wide variety of materials which come to the laboratory for analysis.The Rietveld refinement method of quantitative XRD (Hill et al 1993, Mumme et al 1996), in contrast, requires no standards and requires minimal sample preparation and therefore a more rapid turnaround compared to image analysis. The Rietveld method also has advantages over image analysis in that it can identify and quantify polymorphs, ultra fine materials and many types of hydroxide products. As well, it is useful for analyzing materials such as bauxite or talc, which do not polish well enough for making mounts of the quality required for image analysis. To quantify amorphous material and phases which are present in amounts below the detection limit of XRD, the addition of a standard material is still required. However, in such cases only one standard is needed, which is alumina."

Within a 30-mile radius of Sudbury, Ontario, the Ontario division of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., operates nine underground mines and two open pits. Prior to 1966, ore removal from the underground workings was mainly by scraping, using 125-hp electric slushers in blasthole and caving mining, and 30-hp or less air-operated slushers for fill- method mining. The development and evaluation of low-profile, diesel-powered front-end loaders, designed specifically for underground operations, was followed with keen interest during the period 1964-1965.

In March of 2013, an undisclosed gold mine (MINE X), located in the Western United States, performed blast movement monitoring of three blasts occurring in one of two active pits. Blast Movement Monitors (BMMs) were placed in the bench before blasting, and located after the blast to determine vectors of movement. Using blast movement software, ore/waste boundaries were translated. These locations were compared to MINE X’s standard ore translation procedure, which consisted of moving polygon boundaries by 17.5 feet (5.3 m) in the burden direction of the blast hole pattern. This translation amount, identified by MINE X as “average” motion, had been ascertained by performing a previous blast movement study.

Low carbon 11.5% chromium stainless steels are finding increasing use in industry as square or rectangular tubing material for the construction of structures by welding. During processing, resistively welded circular pipes are bent into square or rectangular shapes. During this process longitudinal cracks can sometimes develop atone of the inner corners of the section. An investigation has shown that the processing of round into square tubing with very sharp corners can cause excessive cold working at the inner corners of the squared tube. This, together with the high tensile residual stresses and a susceptible microstructure due to the presence of grain boundary carbides, can result in brittle cleavage cracking. Measures that can be used to reduce the problem are described.

Few studies have been conducted regarding the location, movement, and relative magnitude of the rear abutment of a longwall coal mine. The rear abutment, or the abutment pressure arch in the gob area, is controlled primarily by the quality of pack of the gob; the more compacted the gob is, the larger the stress would be theoretically. While there is no definitive location for the rear abutment, early studies showed that it could be located as far back in the gob as 300 m (1,000 ft). Like the location of the rear abutment, there has been little research conducted and very few answers as to the exact magnitude of the rear abutment load. Due to the fact that the rear abutment has been studied considerably less than the front or side abutment, the need for further studies is evident. From a ground control standpoint, the location and magnitude of a rear abutment could reveal information on the caving process associated with longwall mining, such as when the initial cave could be expected to occur in future panels. Besides the possible importance of the rear abutment from a ground control perspective, evidence related to the longwall rear abutment could be vital from a ventilation standpoint. The peak rear abutment location could serve as an area for harmful gases, such as methane, to accumulate because forcing air through repacked rock is more difficult than through loose rock. The objective of this study is to determine whether passive seismic tomography could image the location, movement, and relative magnitude of the rear abutment as the longwall face retreated, in addition to the forward abutment and gob. The results of a passive seismic imaging study at a western US longwall show evidence for the location, movement, and relative magnitude of a rear abutment. A clear zone of highlystressed strata is shown where the forward abutment is expected and a low-velocity, damaged zone is shown behind the face where the gob is located. These two zones retreat with the face over a three-week period. In addition, the images show a return to stress levels behind the gob that are slightly higher than overburden stress levels, which is presumably the rear abutment. This occurs at a distance behind the face that is approximately the same as the face width for this mine.
