"Abstract: Wolf Creek dam, on the Cumberland River in Kentucky, US, operated and maintained by the Nashville District of the USACE, is the Corps' largest reservoir east of the Mississippi river. The 1748 m (5,736 ft) long Wolf Creek dam combines earthfill and concrete gravity sections. Construction began in 1941 and was completed in 1950. The dam showed signs of instability in the 1960’s, and in the late 70’s an in-depth project of rehabilitation was undertaken, using both grouting and secant piles. The works saved the dam, but in the late 90’s further signs of distress worried the Nashville district of USACE which, after a study conducted on the water seepage, concluded that construction of a new concrete barrier cut-off wall was needed. In 2009, the $341.4 USD million contract was awarded to TREVIICOS-SOLETANCHE JV.The new wall, located upstream of the concrete monoliths, has a minimum thickness of 60 cm (24 in.), and runs the length of the embankment, into the right abutment, for about 4,200 feet. The founding depth reaches 84 m (275 feet), well below the zone of solutioning. With a total surface approaching 92,903 sq.m (1,000,000 sq.ft), the Wolf Creek barrier wall is unlike any other project in the world.The construction of the cut-off wall followed a complicated but logical sequence of several operations, involving a variety of technologies: grouting, hydromill, directional drilling, and secant piles with reverse circulation. The intensive rock grouting program was aimed to minimize the risk of slurry loss and extend the positive cut-off further deep. Subsequently, an Encasement Concrete wall was installed with hydromill, toeing into the rock, to protect the embankment during the following phases. Smart holes were then drilled into the Encasement wall down to the final depth. Eventually, the holes were used to install the secant piles by employing the reverse circulation piling method.An extensive verification campaign has confirmed the superior quality of the cutoff wall consisting of 1200 secant piles, exceeding by far USACE’s requirements. The main project was substantially completed in early 2013. A small portion of secant piles wall will be installed downstream of the dam, to close the switchyard, finishing the project in the early months of 2014.IntroductionWolf Creek Dam is located on the Cumberland River in south-central Kentucky. This lake is the largest reservoir east of the Mississippi and the ninth largest in the United States, and attracts 4.89 million visitors, more than Yellowstone National Park (2.87 million).This paper describes the recently completed works for the rehabilitation of the dam, accomplished by TreviICOS-Soletanche JV with the construction of a new Barrier Wall."

One model each of three different makes of portable displacement seismographs was calibrated on a shaking table capable of 5,000 pounds of force, Calibration tests were conducted in the frequency range of 5 to 200 c.p,s, and in the amplitude range of 0,002 to 0.05 inch peak-to-peak, The seismographs were tested under two mounting conditions: (1) The feet of the instrument were bolted to the shaking table, and (2) the feet were resting on emery cloth affixed to the table, The results of these tests show that, in the frequency range of 5 to 40 c.p,s, and for vibration levels less than 0.2 g, the magnification for all three instruments is constant with input level but varies slightly with frequency. For vibration levels greater than 0.4 g. and for frequencies greater than 40 c.p.s., the magnification of all three instruments shows large variations with frequency and amplitude of table motion.

"The Quintette coal property lies in the Rocky Mountain foothills of northeastern British Columbia (see Figure 1). Quintette and the adjacent Bullmoose property of Teck Corporation are soon to become the first commercial coal mines in the Peace River Coal Field, which is estir1ated to contain 10 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal reserves.Denison Mines Limited acquired the original Quintette coal licenses in 1969 and 1970. Exploration began soon after and the first feasibility study was conducted in 1975. Denison devoted the following six years to extensive planning and feasibility studies of the project. During this period, the provincial and federal governments also undertook studies to assess infrastructure requirements and economic viability of development in this part of the province. Many of the proposed mine sites such as Bullmoose and Quintette were at least 100 to 150 kilometres from the towns of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, the nearest centres serviced by good highways and a railroad, and a complete network of services would have to be provided if such mines were to be developed. The overall project became known as the North East Coal Development.Concurrently with the feasibility studies, numerous technical and sales missions to Japan were made by representatives of Canadian industry and government, culminating in January 1981 with agreements for Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation to supply a total of 115 million tonnes 8 million tonnes per year for 15 years of primarily metallurgical coal to the Japanese Steel Industry."

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

This report describes the results of a program to design, procure, install, and evaluate a multi-channel underground telephone system of modern design in the Sunshine Silver Mine near Wallace, Idaho. Although the evaluation portion of the program was deleted, this report contains a cost benefit analysis for such a system using estimates of operational data for the Sunshine Mine. The results show a centrally switched telephone system of conventional design with ruggedized phone enclosures and special environmentally sealed dial pads to be the most economical.

In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

"Blast vibrations are essentially a strain/stress wave propagating in rock or structures inthe vicinity of a blast. However, blast vibration has always been quantified in terms ofpeak particle velocity (PPV) or acceleration (PPA), and a meaningful relationshipbetween blast vibration and strain/stress has not been established. The determination ofthe dynamic strain from blast vibration may improve quantification of blast damage andselection of a blast vibration limit for critical structures or high walls. Dynamic strainrelates to rock mechanics or material strength more directly than peak particle velocity(PPV). This paper documents a method to calculate the three-dimensional dynamic straintensor from recorded blast vibration signals. The method is based on determination of thedisplacement gradient at a point of interest for each time instance during the vibrationduration. The method to calculate dynamic strain is applicable to generic seismicwaveforms including near and far field blast vibration from a production blast withmultiple blast holes. In order to minimize measurement errors the specifications of thespacing between monitors and the sampling frequency of the vibration recording aredescribed."

"The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

The Umiray Angat 13,2 km long tunnel in Philippines have been bored through extremely variable and difficult ground conditions including a number of special events. In particular the following adverse conditions were found: faults in decomposed ground, high temperature rocks, extremely rapid and important convergence phenomena, water inflows up to 800 litres per second. The special El Nino climatic conditions caused a long dry season and lower the level of the lake that was granting the access by barge to the site under the minimum navigable level. Many equipment have had therefore to be transported to site by a 10 ton capacity helicopter, after having been partially dismounted. For the same reason most of the tunnel drive have been bored servicing the site by 1 ton capacity helicopters to transport materials, spares and personnel. In order to overcome the above geological and logistic problems several innovation were introduced and tested in this project. Despite all that difficulties the 13,2 km of tunnel were bored in about 24 months, with a global average of 500 m/month.

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. The effects of the slagging components Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of the gas/slag/matte system with major elements “Cu2O”-“FeO”-SiO2-S are characterised using an integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling approach. The experimental technique included high-temperature equilibration experiments using a spinel substrate in controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/SO2/Ar), quenching of the sample and subsequent measurement of the compositions of equilibrium phases with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). Thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using the computer system FactSage. In previous experimental studies on this system, the separate effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO were determined. In the present investigation, the combined effects of these additional components are investigated at 1200oC and P(SO2) = 0.25 atm and a range of P(O2)’s. Special attention is paid to ensuring chemical equilibrium is achieved in each case, for this reason possible kinetic factors are systematically analysed. The results obtained are presented in the form of graphs showing the compositions of matte and slag phases as functions of copper concentration (matte grade). The new experimental data are used for the improvement of the thermodynamic database for multicomponent copper-containing systems. The effects of the slagging elements on this multicomponent system will be presented in the paper. INTRODUCTION Whilst Fe-O-Si form the principal components of copper smelting and refining slags, additional impurities are present in industrial practice typically at 2–5 wt.% Al2O3, 1–4 wt.% CaO and 1–2 wt.% MgO levels (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002). These elements are introduced into the slag as impurities in concentrates and other feedstocks, in fluxes added to the process and in refractory materials. Understanding, and accurate description, of the changes that take place in the smelting process in the presence of these additional elements is of major importance to the optimization of industrial operations. Although experimental data are available on slag/copper matte equilibria, further work is needed to accurately characterise the influence of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on phase equilibria and elemental distributions of elements in gas/slag/matte systems. The individual effects of the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components on equilibrium phase assemblages under selected conditions have been quantified in a recent series of studies on the Cu–Fe–O–S–Si-(Al, Ca, Mg) gas-slag-matte-metal system (Fallah- Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018; Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hidayat, Hayes, & Jak, 2017a, 2017b; Hidayat, Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018a, 2018b; Jak et al., 2016; D. Shishin, Decterov, & Jak, 2018; Denis Shishin, Hayes, & Jak, 2018). Since, thermodynamically, the condensed phases do not behave ideally, it is to be expected that the effects of individual elements may not be additive, and the additional interactions between the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components will also have to be taken into account. These additional effects are expected to be smaller than those of the individual components, so higher accuracy is needed. The present paper describes analysis of the precision and accuracy of the experimental technique on multi-component, multi-phase equilibria in these systems to enable the combined effects of Al2O3 + CaO + MgO on slag/matte/spinel equilibria, i.e. for high Fe/SiO2, to be accurately measured. The effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the gas - slag - matte are analysed using a thermodynamic modelling approach with the computer package FactSage.

"In mineral exploration and mining applications, it is sometimes necessary to reduce sampling error in order to improve representivity of individual sample assays. Historic efforts to reduce sampling error have relied on the belief that larger samples exhibit less sampling error. Justifications for this belief traditionally have coupled the binomial theorem with an ideal geological material consisting of ore and gangue particles of equal size and shape (an equant grain model) and empirical tests of geological materials, to illustrate an inverse relationship between sample size and sampling variance. To date, no proof exists of this sample size-sampling variance relationship in real geological materials exhibiting variations in grain size, shape, composition, and degree of liberation.Using first principles calculus and the formula for the mean, sample mass and sampling variance are proven to be inversely proportional in all geological materials. Distribution assumptions and physically ideal geological models are not used in this proof. Furthermore, algebraic manipulations of expressions describing the variances of equant grain models consistent with binomial, hypergeometric, and Poisson distributions reveal that these models also exhibit an inverse sample size-sampling variance relationship. Thus, the sampling behaviors of these models are numerically consistent with the sampling behaviors of real geological materials, and these models can be used to estimate sampling errors in real geological materials using simple sampling parameters."

Geological hazards such as faulting, basement ridges, and zones of "thin" (< 6 m) coal have a major impact on mining economics of underground operations in Huntly Coalfield. Experience has shown that drillhole-based investigations do not yield sufficiently detailed models of the coal seam to allow management of the planning risks associated with these hazards. Consequently, operational performance is affected by unplanned costs associated with lower productivity, loss of coal reserves, and expensive strata control remedies in problem ground conditions. Huntly Coalfield is a challenging environment for acquisition of good quality seismic reflection data due to the very thick (10-85m) weathering layer. Since 1994, successful acquisition of 2D and 3D data has been achieved through a combination of careful testing of technical parameters and experimental trials prior to committing to production recording. High resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) is proving to be an investigations technique which generates accurate and reliable models of the coal seam and associated structures, such as normal faults and topography of the surface on which the coal seam rests. The HRSR technique has been applied and developed in the Okowhao Sector where Huntly East Mine is developing and extracting coal reserves. Results of a recent 3D survey demonstrate that this technique is capable of revolutionising risk management in mine planning for underground mines in structurally complicated coal deposits.

"Abstract - More than 2800 published fluid inclusion data (primary inclusions) from eighteen typical Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn-Pb deposits and districts were examined to study possible relationships between MVT fluid properties and metal tonnages and ore grades. The mean Th and salinity values for fifteen MVT deposits and districts are 122°C ± 21°C and 20.7 ± 2.6 wt% CaCl2 equivalent, respectively. In general, temperatures increase from pre-ore to ore stages, and salinities decrease from ore to post-ore stages. From post-ore to late calcite stages, salinity and temperature decrease with various trends within specific districts.Several conclusions are drawn: first, results show that Hanor’s (1996) salinity threshold for metalrich basinal fluids applies to typical MVT ore fluids (~16 wt% CaCl2 equivalent). Second, the lower limit of mean Th values of measured MVT deposits and districts (n = 15) of ~75°C is similar to Hanor’s (1996) observed temperature threshold for metal-rich basinal brines of ~60°C (n = 224). Third, there is no statistically significant relationship between fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures (Th) and metal tonnages or ore grades. Fourth, there seems to be a tendency for large tonnage districts/deposits to be associated with mean fluid salinities that are relatively low (~16 to 21 wt% CaCl2 equivalent) within the overall range of salinity means (~16 to 26 wt% CaCl2 equivalent). There is also a correlation between higher ore grades and higher salinities. Finally, comparison with other sedimentary rock-hosted Zn-Pb deposit types shows a trend of salinity decrease and temperature increase from MVT, sandstone-hosted and diapir-related Pb-Zn deposits, to vein-type and Irishtype Pb-Zn deposits, and then to sedex deposits. However, more data are needed for sedex deposits. The salinity threshold for significant Zn-Pb transport decreases to =~10 wt% CaCl2 equivalent at ~250°C. This study suggests that fluid inclusion analysis during exploration may be useful in assessing ore-forming potential (threshold salinity) and possible ore grades (salinity)."

Three well-known copper and gold deposits in northern Luzon, Philippines are located in the Mankayan Mineral District. These are the Lepanto Copper-Gold Deposit, the Far Southeast Porphyry Copper Deposit and the newly discovered Victoria Gold Deposit. The latter discovery led LCMC to shift from a predominantly copper mine to a gold mine. The pre-Eocene Lepanto basement andesite and the middle Miocene Balili volcaniclastic sequence underlie the Mankayan Mineral District. They are intruded by tonalitic to gabbroic Bagon Intrusive followed by diorite-quartz diorite intrusions. Diatreme emplacement of late Miocene-early Pliocene Imbanguila dacite pyroclastics and porphyries took place much later. Faults in the district mostly form a conjugate fracture pattern dominated by north and northwest trending shears, east-west trending extensional fractures and few north-south trending fissures. Victoria is an epithermal gold-base metal rich quartz vein deposit. The veins occur along tensional structures and it is common to observe crustiform and banded features among the sulphides and gangue minerals. It is an open space infilling type of mineralisation. The Victoria vein systems are divided into zones based on continuity. In each zone are major veins and associated spits. Dacite pyroclastics and porphyries predominantly host the major veins with a few narrow veins hosted by the Balili volcaniclastics and the Lepanto metavolcanics. The veins generally trend east-northeast with 75 - 80 dips towards the south. The longest vein can be traced fairly continuously for a horizontal distance of about 600 metres. The vertical persistence of major veins exposed on three level drives has a range of 150 metres and can reach as much as 400 metres based on drill hole intercepts. The vein widths vary from two to eight metres. Right lateral movements of either the NW or NE shear faults could have produced the east trending tensional fractures. The development of ore shoot patterns was recognised and has been helpful to the mining operations. Cymoid loops with defined pinch and swell features are noted both laterally and vertically. Complementing the structural pattern is the distribution of gold values along veins where lateral and vertical continuity is also observed. Gold is associated with quartz, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. In relatively high gold zones, the abundant sulphides are sphalerite and galena. In relatively high copper zones, there is an abundance of chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite. Galena is always associated with sphalerite but less in abundance. Chalcopyrite occurs either as separate bands from or associated with sphalerite-galena. Chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite appears contemporaneous with sphalerite and galena but in some portions the former cuts the latter sulphides. The predominant gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and gypsum. Rhodochrosite is the predominant carbonate gangue. Few sulphides are found in the carbonates. Gypsum (anhydrite) is found cross-cutting early mineralisation. It carries very few sulphides. The alteration halos around veins are relatively narrow. In an outward sequence, the silicic alteration occurs very near the veins, followed by sericitic-argillic alteration then to propylitic zones. It is also common to observe veins bounded by propylitic alteration. Preliminary paragenetic studies show apparent three stages of mineralisation, the early-quartz (-gold) stage followed by a carbonate stage and a late-gypsum stage. The abundance of base metals relatively decreases towards the gypsum stage. The Victoria gold deposit could have some genetic associations with the Lepanto Cu-Au deposit and probably indirectly with the FSE porphyry system. It is relatively apparent that the Victoria quartz-gold-base metal veins could have occurred similarly as the quartz-gold roots overprinting the Lepanto enargite mineralisation. This overprinting signifies the waning stages of the entire hydrothermal system.

A complete dust-control policy can keep these emissions confined, sealed and suppressed, protecting the environment from fugitive, airborne dust. Material handling and processing, storage and traffic are the major dust producing sources. All industries that convey dry, light material need a dust control system.

This paper describes the application of modern data-analysis tools, such as data mining, to determine a representative cost driver for haulage activity. This cost driver was subsequently used to trace incurred haul costs by bench for openpit optimization. For this purpose, large amount of previously unused cost and production data from an open pit mine was extracted, loaded, transformed and integrated into a data warehouse. Predictive modeling was performed using Microsoft Decision Trees algorithm to compute expected unit haul costs by bench for future mine expansions. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to determine the effect of two cost drivers (if any) for incremental haul costs in the final pit outline process.
