This report describes the results of a study of longwall ignition hazards and specific suppression systems to minimize each of the major hazards. The major ignition hazards were identified by conducting a literature search and conversing with knowledgeable individuals in the United States mining industry. Three classes of potential ignition suppression systems are discussed: triggered suppression systems for face ignition, passive suppression systems, and control of ignition hazard in the gob. The triggered suppression systems included protection for the shearer, head and tail gates, welding equipment, and the shearer power cable. Passive systems include improved ventilation and water sprays, and charges in the shearer head. Gob protection can be improved by isolating the gob from working areas and by introducting inerting agents into the gob.

NEW YORK'S largest hotel, the Pennsylvania, will be filled with mining and oil men and metallurgists the third week of February when some 3000 AIME members, their wives, and guests will gather for the Institute's 1948 Annual Meeting-its 166th general meeting. Except for the usual Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division at the Columbia University Men's Faculty Club, the big assembly will be under one top and members will not this year have to consult compass and map to find their next session. Possibly enervated by the stupendous effort of the Anniversary Celebration last spring and the plethora of highly successful fall meetings, the various committees have been a trifle slow in arranging their social and technical programs, but in mid December as we go to press there is already much to report indicative of substantial fare and high interest. The definite timetable schedule will appear in the February M&M.

This paper examines our core values as people and makes some observations about what it takes to really succeed in the mining industry.

The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.3 and 2.6 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year production period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 indexes. Initial capital investment is $34.6 million for the 1.3-MM-tpy mine and $63.5 million for the 2.6-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $50.8 and $92.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $38.51 and $34.91 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $13.41 and $12.27 per ton for the 1.3- and 2.6 -MM- tpy mines.

ELECTROSTATIC methods are used to separate and concentrate or purify granular particles derived from ores or various synthetic and agricultural products. Compared with other separation methods that require many technological refinements, the electrostatic attraction of fibers, grass, and seeds to charged surfaces clan be accomplished under the most primitive circumstances, and the early development of this method of beneficiation seemed very promising. Precise application of the method to provide high selectivity, however, is a complex procedure, and interest in this method declined. During this period Mr. O. C. Ralston initiated a Bureau of Mines research program oil electrostatic separation. It is the purpose of thins publication to describe the development of the electrostatic method of particle separation from the early beginning to the present resurgence of interest. Most of the information for this description bas been derived from references, a few of which were not available for thorough review. Much information has been drawn from the investitions of the Bureau. Acknowledgments Mr. O. C. Ralston, former Chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, began the research program on the subject and did research on the mils literature. Both Mr. Ralston and Mr. H. B. Johnson, former president of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co., furnished patent references. A critical review by Mr. F. D. Lamb, Research director, and Mr. M. J. Spendlove, Supervisory metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, College Park Metallurgy Research Center, lifts been of much value in preparing this report.

The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent'. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year's plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

Bolting the mine roof is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. The main contribution to the noise is the drilling of the roof bolt holes, especially drilling in hard rock. Previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling bolt holes is inversely proportional to the bite depth (i.e., penetration per drill revolution). Less specific energy at a reasonably high bite depth means less energy is wasted in the drilling process for producing heat, bit wear and noise. Therefore, proper control of the drilling operation to achieve a reasonably higher bite depth can reduce drilling noise from its sources as a proactive noise control approach. In order to explore the feasibility and develop the proactive technology for reducing drilling noise, drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings. The preliminary results show that significant reduction in noise dose can be achieved by drilling in medium hard rock with uniaxial compressive strength of about 276 bars (4,000 psi) and at a reasonably high bite depth of about 4.6 mm/rev (0.18 in./rev). This paper presents the findings from laboratory experimental studies.

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. Résumé Cent soixante (160) câbles d'ancrage ont été installés au toit de la rampe à la Mine-laboratoire de CANMET à Val-d'Or, Qué bec, Canada, pour prévenir toute dégradation suite à l'élargissement de la voie de roulage dans un secteur tournant à 180 degrés, communément appelé Virage Santa Barbara. Le roc à cet endroit est de nature bloqueuse et stratifiée, et son épaisseur au toit de la rampe est limitée à environ dix (10) mètres, le tout sous une couche de terrain meuble saturée en permanence. Le soutènement mis en place a été conçu pour former une zone de compression et supporter une strate de roc d?environ quatre (4) mètres d'épaisseur. Les critères de conception et les méthodes d'installation sont présentées. Un contrôle de qualité rigoureux a été effectué au moment de la mise en place du support, notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en tension des câbles eux-mêmes et la qualité du béton utilisé lors de l'injection. Des instruments de mesure seront mis en place sous peu pour dépister tout mouvement éventuel au toit de la rampe. Abstract Design and installation of an active mine ground support using tensioned cables at the Experimental Mine, Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada. One hundred sixty (160) cables were installed at the back of the ramp at the CANMET?s Experimental Mine located in Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada, to prevent any degradation of the ground after the enlargement of the roadway in a sector turning at 180 degrees, usually called Virage Santa Barbara. The nature of the rock mass in this area is blocky and stratified, and its thickness above the ramp does not exceed ten (10) metres. Eight (8) metres of soil, mostly saturated, cover the bedrock on top of the ramp. The ground support was designed to form a compression zone at the back, aimed to carry a strata of rock of around four (4) metres thick. The design criteria and the methods of installation of the ground support are described in the paper. A strict control of the quality of the grout used for injection and the tension placed in the cables was carried out during the installation of the support. Ground monitors will be installed soon, to detect any movement that could take place above the ramp.

GOLD AND SILVER, the monetary metals, have presented in the last year a striking contrast; gold has experienced unusual prosperity, while silver has been depressed more severely than ever before. Gold mining has been hailed as the only basic industry that is able to thrive on depression; the new gold produced is thought by many to be the most important material for the reconstruction of prosperity. Silver production, meanwhile, has been sinking to its level of 40 years ago, and its price to a level never before recorded. These factors have reduced the value of silver produced in 1932 to about the value of the average annual production more than a century ago, that of the decade 1801-1810. No other major commodity in world trade appears to have suffered a greater decline during the present depression.

"In February 2018, drawn in part by the states’ proud mining heritage, SME took its Annual Conference & Expo to Minneapolis, MN for the first time. More than 5,000 people and 554 exhibitors converged on the Minneapolis Convention Center for three days of networking, exhibiting and technical sessions.The state’s mining legacy, one that continues today, is fueled in large part by its vast iron ore resources in the northern part of the state. The historical significance of the mines in the Mesabi Range, otherwise known as the Iron Range north of Lake Superior, cannot be understated. “Mining is a way of life here,” said U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District. A native of the Iron Range, the three-term U.S. congressman was one of the featured speakers of the opening keynote session. “We like to think we contribute enormously to the well-being of this country and the world. We were the source of the iron ore and steel that helped win two world wars. And we like to think that we are part of the progress that has taken place in the United States ever since.” Nolan kicked off the keynote sessionthat focused on innovation and its part in the mining industry. The session included Rene Aquilar, vice president of corporate affairs and sustainability, Antofagasta Minerals Group; Bob Anderson, vice president for research and development, 3M; Rolf Weberg, executive director, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Christopher Beck, executive vice president and president, Nalco Water. The panel session looked at U.S. and global minerals production, and the importance of the United States to maintain a major role in the minerals industry, both as a producer and as a technology leader. The panel also touched on the global mining industry and the issues that impact mining around the world. Sustainability, the use of water in mining and earning a social license to operate were among the topics discussed by the panel.Speaking of the importance of mining, Nolan conceded that talking about the benefits of mining to the crowded auditorium at the SME conference might be akin to a preacher speaking to the choir, but, following the adage that all politics are local, he continued to illustrate his point by emphasizing the importance of mining to the Great Lakes.“A study by Homeland Security concluded that 13 percent of the nation’s GDP comes out of Lake Superior through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie and most of that is iron ore,” said Nolan. “That study found that, if those locks fail, it would create a national depression. It would put millions of people out of work. That ore and those minerals supply the steel mills, the auto industry, the heavy industrials. They are the heart of our economy. The study concluded that if the states that make up the Great Lakes were a nation, it would be the fourth largest economy in the world.”"

The present rapid growth of coal stripping in the United States is a curious reversal of the tendency of mining to proceed from outcrop to depth. A combination of technical and economic factors bas stimulated the use of stripping methods until today many million tons of coal We being recovered by open cuts from sites that an earlier generation of engineers would have passed by as not commercially mineable or, if workable at all, only by underground methods. The total quantity of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States by stripping in 1928, the latest year for which detailed figures are available, was 19,789,000 short tons. Of this, 71,000 tons came from small workings not equipped with power shovels and 587,000 tons from properties in which stripping and underground work were carried on at the same mine; but as neither of these types is representative of modern stripping practice, they will be omitted in the discussion that follows. The total from strip pits proper in 1928 was 19,131,000 tons, produced by 176 pits employing 385 steam or electric shovels.3 Figures by States are given in Table 1. More than 5,300 mining professionals from around the world attended the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, March 1-3 in Denver, CO. Seventy three technical sessions highlighted innovative technologies and applications for the development of mineral resources. And the exhibit featured 421 companies worldwide and 632 exhibit booths. The 1999 SME Annual Meeting had 10% international attendance. Professionals from outside the United States were guests at the first SME International Reception.

Introduction Any person concerned with the welfare of mining in British Columbia cannot help being perturbed by the fact that the industry, to an alarming extent, is living on its capital. The great majority of mines and mining camps of today represent a heritage handed down by the prospectors of yesterday. It is true that mining engineers, geologists, mineral dressers, metallurgists, and their fellow scientists and engineers have played an honourable, indeed a vital, part in he1ping to make our producing mines, often after costly and extensive underground development and extended researches. It is also true that the mineralization at the Sullivan, Britannia, and Copper Mountain mines was all discovered before the turn of the century. Likewise the Cariboo, Bridge River, Hedley, Ymir, Rossland, Boundary, Slocan, Salmo, and Portland Canal mining areas, although they had not all been developed, were all known more than fifty years ago. Furthermore, every one of these camps owed its discovery and eventual exploitation to the fact that encouraging ' mineralization occurred at the surface. Where would the mining industry of British Columbia be today had those precious outcrops been buried beneath twenty to forty feet of glacial drift or other overburden? Anybody familiar with the geology and geography of British Columbia will probably agree that finding new mining camps is going to be an increasingly difficult and costly business: disappointments there will be in abundance. Nevertheless, most persons will probably also agree that other valuable mines and even mining camps await discovery by those who will prove resourceful and lucky enough to unearth them. It has become increasingly obvious to the authors of this paper that any new too1s which can aid either prospectors or engineers in their search for new orebodies should be welcome. This paper outlines our efforts to develop biogeochemistry and related techniques to the point where they may be considered as useful tools in the search for hidden mineralization.

A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Stoffgesetz vorgeschlagen um hydromechanisches Kluftverhalten numerisch zu Modellieren. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d'interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l'applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. Les résultats montrent la bonne application du modèle mathématique et le rôle hydraulique fondamental joué par les fractures.

Real gross national product increased at a larger-than- expected annual rate of 8.3 percent in the first quarter of 1984, with both consumption and investment spending increasing significantly in real terms (table 1). Residential and nonresidential fixed investment increased at annual rates of 25.7 and 14.6 percent during the first quarter of 1984, and investment in nonresidential structures, which declined in 1983, also increased during the first quarter of 1984, nearly attaining its 1982 level. The annual level of personal savings increased $27.7 billion, while the personal savings rate (the ratio of personal savings to disposable income) increased to 5.8 percent during the first quarter. The increase in the personal savings rate comes as welcome news to analysts concerned over the flow of loanable funds to the private sector and the impact on interest rates in 1984 of increased private and Government demands. U.S. Minerals Industry Performance A major upswing in the performance of the metal mining sector occurred during the first quarter of 1984, with production increasing almost 11.2 percent from January to March, The recovery of the metal sector is also reflected in the performance of primary metal industry profits, which were positive during fourth quarter 1983 following seven consecutive quarterly losses (table 1). Two thousand nine hundred more metal mining production workers were employed in February 1984 than in February 1983.

The accident-prevention record of the coal-mining industry in the United States was more favorable in 1936 than in 1935, both from the standpoint of the relative safety of the individual miner on the job and of the price in life and limb that the Nation paid for its year's supply of coal. The increase in relative safety of the individual miner was indicated by a lower death rate and a lower injury rate than in the preceding year per million man-hours of exposure to the hazards of mining; that is, per million hours of work performed by the employees. (See table 1.) A reduction in the price in life and limb that the Nation paid for a year's supply of coal was indicated by a smaller death rate and a smaller injury rate per million tons of coal produced. Thus the individual miner was a better insurance risk, as far as accidents were concerned, in 1936 than in 1935, and a ton of coal used in the homes and industries of the country represented less human suffering than in 1935. The two points of view are distinct, and both should be kept in mind when considering accidents and safety in coal mining or in other industries. More men were employed in 1936 than in 1935, and more workdays were available for the individual miner. Large gains were also made in the total number of man-shifts and man-hours worked in the industry as a whole. In number of tons of coal mined, 1936 showed large gains over 1935. Moreover, the average output of coal per man-hour worked was higher in 1936 than in 1935. All of these gains were made without lengthening the average number of hours of work per man per day.

The austenitic and ferritic stainless steels do not undergo any phase transformation that induces very fine grains in the product through thermomechanical processing as practiced in most other steels. Considerable grain refinement can be achieved by intense multistage deformation descending through warm to cold working; notably multi-axial forging of bulk material can attain high strains with diminished risk of cracking. Hot working to improve ductility yields finer grain sizes as the T is reduced and strain rate E raised; increased strain has limited effect due to the steady state regime. Ferritic steels develop subgrains with size diminishing as E rises and T falls with the advantage of retained strain hardening; recrystallization delivers grains several times the cell size. In austenitic steels, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) provides finer grains at higher E and lower T with a lower limit due to intergranular cracking. The DRX grains contain a strengthening substructure that can easily be retained by quenching; if static recrystallization is allowed to occur the grain size rises markedly. Multistage rolling with diminishing T is able to provide grain refinement to the same degree as straining at the finishing T yet provides better ductility. grains on recrystallization. As a result of the strain induced transformation to martensite, small subzero deformations of austenitic or duplex steels produce very high dislocation densities that yield marked grain refinement when they revert upon reheating.
