"In regular CIL circuits, activated carbon is used for two purposes: avoiding solid/liquid separation after cyanide leaching, and minimizing gold losses in the tails. The carbon distribution and gold profiles in the successive CIL stages are operating variables, not objectives. When the CIL feed contains a preg robbing constituent however, such as native carbon, there will be competition for gold cyanide and this conflicts with minimizing of losses of gold to CIL tails. This paper examines some of the limitations of activated carbon in CIL circuits handling preg robbing Carlin Trend ores.INTRODUCTION Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) has been a great success treating regular gold ores, but the technology is still challenged by preg robbing feedstocks. Little information is available in the gold milling literature on CIL gold extraction from “free” milling gold ores which are preg robbing, or on autoclave discharge (POX’ed) slurries of double refractory ores. Neither feedstock is readily available for experimentation. No literature reference could be found describing deliberate modifications to CIL operations or CIL circuits due to the presence of two types of carbon: “native” and activated. There is some literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of native carbons (Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001). Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices (Tretbar, Arehart & Graves). In this paper, the term “native” carbon indicates (severely) preg robbing carbonaceous materials found in gold ores. There is considerable literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of man-made “activated carbons”. Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices. These tests are comparative, i.e. results relate to a standard carbon and depend on the test methodology and carbon history. The test results are equilibrium oriented, hence of limited value to CIL circuit designers or plant operators handling preg robbing solids; in CIL circuits most carbons are not loaded to capacity. Information on gold cyanide adsorption and desorption kinetics might be more relevant and that is one subject explored in this paper."

Draglines are massive machines extensively utilized in opencast mines for overburden stripping. The demanding working environment induces fractures, wear and tear, and fatigue failures in dragline components and eventuates in extended maintenance, lengthy downtimes, and loss of production. The bucket is the main source of external loads on the machinery, since interactions with ground materials take place in this region. This study aims to develop a generic finite element model of the stress on an operating bucket. This entails (i) three-dimensional modelling of a dragline bucket, (ii) analytical estimation of resistive forces in the bucket movement, (iii) three-dimensional simulation of the moving bucket using finite element analysis (FEA), and (iv) sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of formation characteristics on stress variation. Simulation results imply that the drag hitch and digging teeth are the elements of the bucket that are most prone to failure. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicates that internal friction angle of the formation is the dominant parameter leading fluctuations in stress values. Changes in stress level are least influenced by formation density.

"This study presents an approach to establishing relationships between metallurgical performance and the characteristics of the bubble population (gas dispersion) inside flotation cells. Bubble size Db, superficial gas velocity Jg, and bubble surface area flux Sb (Sb = 6Jg/Db) measurements were obtained along with metallurgical samples in full-size equipment processing different ore types. The gas dispersion was manipulated by changing the operating conditions of the cells (gas flowrate and frother type) and the metallurgical performance (grade-recovery) was determined. In two cases, the Sb had a strong relationship with grade and recovery, hence, Sb could be used as practical operating parameter. In another case, Sb did not correlate with recovery. The reasons were attributed to creating small bubbles using frothers with desired anti-coalescence properties. This illustrated that bubble size was the key parameter for metallurgy rather than Sb.INTRODUCTIONUnravelling the mechanisms that govern the relationships between metallurgical performance and the characteristics of the bubble population (gas dispersion) inside a flotation cell remains a major challenge. Information on this subject is scarce in the literature, particularly, plant-scale data. The report of Jameson and Allum (1984) appears to be the first gas dispersion study conducted in industrial (mechanical) cells. To introduce concepts, some aspects of their work are reviewed here.The prime motivation of that study was to establish whether any particular cell design (among 44 cells surveyed) could produce very small bubbles (< 0.1 mm), which laboratory research suggested would increase the recovery of fine particles. Although one of the outcomes was that the (examined) cells did not seem to produce such small bubbles (Sauter mean1 D32 ˜ 0.9 mm), the analysis highlighted the importance of including other factors. Jameson and Allum indicated that, besides bubble size (Db), other characteristics of the bubble dispersion should be considered, namely: gas holdup ?g – the fraction of cell volume occupied by bubbles, superficial gas velocity Jg – is the gas flowrate divided by the cross-sectional area of the cell and, bubble surface area flux Sb – the rate of production of (new) bubble surface area (m2/s) per m2 of cell cross-sectional area. It should be noted that, whereas Jg, ?g and Db can be measured directly, the Sb is derived: Sb = 6Jg/Db, where Db is usually substituted by the Sauter mean diameter (D32)."

Embankment piles are common in the Scandinavian countries (Kjellman, 1940) and in Southeast Asia as support of fills, light structures, bridge abutments and deep excavations (Eide, 1968) as described in the following. Untreated timber piles are often used for light structures and shallow fills when the ground water level is high since they are inexpensive and readily available. When the applied loads are relatively high precast concrete piles and steel piles are preferred. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Embankment piles carry the load from a fill or a struc-ture either through skin friction along the sides of the piles (Fig. 1a) or through a precast concrete slab or through pile caps at the top of the piles (Fig. 1b). When the load is carried by skin friction it is often economical to use small diameter timber piles because of the large surface area (Asplund, 1939). For precast concrete or steel piles concrete caps are used to transfer the load to the piles due to the relatively high capacity of the piles since the skin friction resistance alone is not sufficient to transfer the load to the piles.

Cleveland-Cliffs lron Co., which operates Marquette lron Mining Co.&apos;s Republic mine, conducted a test whereby 35,000 tons of self-fluxed pellets were produced in the grate-kiln system from specular hematite flotation concentrates. A brief description of the pelletizing plant is presented along with pertinent operating details. Date is included which compare operating conditions and the chemical and physical properties of the green and fired pellets for the self-fluxing pelletizing test with the normal acid pelletizing operation. The success of self-fluxed sinter in enhancing the operation of the blast furnace during the past few years has reasonably led to the assumption that the use of self-fluxed pellets might result in even greater furnace efficiencies. A great share of development work in agglomeration has been directed towards techniques related to the production of self-fluxed pellets, but only a limited tonnage of self-fluxed pellets had been produced on a commercial scale until this past year when The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. produced 35,000 tons of such pellets by the grate kiln system at the Republic mine during the period May 21-June 5, 1962. REPUBLIC&apos;S GRATE-KILN PLANT The grate-kiln pelletizing process consists of four stages, namely: feed or balling circuit, traveling grate, rotary kiln and annular cooler (Fig. 1). The balling section is conventional and utilizes four 9x30-ft balling drums in closed circuit with 5x14-ft vibrating screens having 3/8-in. rod decks. The traveling grate is 12 ft wide by 126 ft long and has 14 windboxes — six in the drying section and eight in the preheat section. The rotary kiln is 15 ft ID shell and 114 ft long. The annular cooler is 40 ft in diameter and has 12 windboxes. The cooler is divided into two zones by a moveable curtain wall. The high temperature air from the first zone is used as secondary combustion air in the kiln. Normally the only heat supplied is through the burning of No. 6 oil in the single kiln burner. Hot gases pass counter to the pellet flow through the system. The exit gases from the kiln pass down draft through the preheat section through cyclones and are drawn through the drying bed prior to exiting via the stack. The temperatures are normally held within the following ranges: Kiln 2400-2445 °F Preheat 1850-1950°F Drying 480-520°F Exit gas 200°F Pellets 120°F The design capacity of the Republic mine grate-kiln system was 2500 Itpd. Sustained production in excess of 35% over design capacity has been achieved. No screening of the cooler product is practiced. PELLETIZING TEST CONDITIONS When a decision was made to proceed with a test at the Republic mine pelletizing plant to produce 35,000 tons of self-fluxed pellets, several potential failure factors had to be carefully considered. Research work on a batch and pilot plant scale indicated that the grate-kiln system at Republic would require some major changes in order to obtain optimum conditions. In many cases compromises were agreed upon as major equipment changes and revisions were not feasible. The pelletizing conditions which laboratory development tests revealed were required in order to insure successful production of self-fluxed pellets were: 1) Good mixing of limestone and concentrate and proper moisture control; 2) Higher gas flow rates in the preheat section than are normally used; 3) Higher preheat temperatures than normal; 4) Maximum kiln temperature 2350°F. There was just cause for concern about balling problems that might occur. Approximately 10% of dry pulverized limestone was to be added to the specular hematite concentrate just ahead of the Pekay mixers on the belt feeding the balling drum. Large scale

Mathematical simulation of reservoir behavior may be used to help understand reservoir processes and to predict reservoir behavior, thereby leading to the most economically desirable form of exploitation. In addition, simulation can be used as a tool for reservoir description to learn more about the physical nature of the reservoir and the mode of primary recovery. This use is essential in most reservoir studies and represents one of the more significant applications of simulation. Prediction of reservoir behavior provides information concerning displacement efficiency, optimum well locations, and the comparison of alternative producing processes. Since oil, water and gas all commonly occur in many reservoirs, a simulation that takes into account the simultaneous flow of three immiscible phases is a prerequisite for obtaining such information. Furthermore, a simulation that describes this flow in two dimensions provides the capability of evaluating combination gas- and water-drive reservoirs with either an areal or a cross-sectional description. Many reservoir problems require such a simulation. The objective of the research described here was to develop a mathematical model and associated computer program for accurate, efficient, and economical prediction of the reservoir flow of three phases in two-dimensional geometry. Several authors have discussed multidimensional reservoir simulation of two phases.l-3 Gottfried et al.&apos; presented an analy- sis of three-phase simulation in one dimension. Fagin and Stewart" and Garrett6 have discussed the simulation of three-phase flow in two dimensions, but their solution techniques were different from the method discussed in this paper. In particular, previous models and computer programs have usually involved either fewer capabilities or inefficient and less rigorous descriptions resulting in limited applicability. In the following sections, we present a description of the model, an evaluation of the method, and the application to reservoir problems. Additional and supporting material is presented in the Appendix. The Three-Phase Model General Description The three-phase model consists of the mathematical description of the flow of oil, water and gas in a reservoir. Conceptually this description considers flow in all three space dimensions, but in the subject simulator it is assumed that no flow occurs in the third dimension. The model includes the effects on reservoir behavior of fluid and rock compressibility, viscosity, gravity, capillary pressure, relative permeability and gas solubility. Within the two-dimensional restriction, the reservoir considered may be completely heterogeneous and anisotropic. The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of nee&apos; water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gal¬lons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain this high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ore near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand for new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements ill the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

The Brightwater conveyance system includes 26 km of tunnels, a 130 mgd pump station, 2 km of micro tunnels, and a 2.4 km outfall. The tunnels extend from Woodinville to Puget Sound through varying soils in 1 to 7 bars of hydrostatic pressure and depths to 185 m. The tunnel diameters range from 4 to 6 m and include numerous lining systems. This paper highlights major shaft and tunnel design, including dual cellshafts, multiple pipe configuration tunnels, polymer concrete segments, and the use of a one pass lining designed to convey high pressure effluent.

Arsenic is a metalloid which has attracted great environmental scrutiny in recent decades. Moreover, its control and deportment is becoming increasingly important in the metallurgical processing of modern complex ores and concentrates. As such the authors of this publication have a combined professional experience of well over 100 years in the study and hydrometallurgical treatment of arsenic. Hence, this paper will cover arsenic fundamentals along with a review of technology for removal, fixation and stabilization. Finally, an application of industrial Alkaline Sulfide Leaching (ASL) of a copper enargite concentrate will be elucidated.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

The extraction of drawbells in Lift #2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody was achieved by single shot blasting, enabled through the use of electronic detonators. This paper discusses the designs considered at the time of the feasibility study and the various changes made to these designs prior to and during the construction phase of the Lift #2 block cave. Operational issues encountered are highlighted, as are ways in which these were overcome. The amount of personnel utilised to mine the drawbells is also covered. Lists of design and operational considerations to be used for drawbell extractions have been included.

"In 1942, commercial mining operations began in what is now the Lucky Friday Ag/Pb/Zn mine in Idaho’s Silver Valley. Wholly owned since 1962 by Hecla Mining Company, the mine has produced more than 145 million ounces of silver and has been a mainstay producer in Idaho’s Silver Valley for over 70 years.However, by the early 21st century, the mill had fallen, technologically, seriously behind the rest of the industry. Accordingly, starting in 2005, the current mill management team set to revitalizing the milling operation. This paper will describe how the mill was systematically evaluated and the aging infrastructure replaced with more current technology. Driven by internal mill review studies supported by QEMSCAN mineralogical balancing, the mill has in recent years been through waves of upgrading – from the installation of new mechanical and column flotation equipment to the introduction of on-stream analysis, a technology well-accepted around most of the industry but alien to this technologically conservative mining district.The experience at Lucky Friday is a testament to the need for ongoing structured mill optimisation and technology upgrading in established mining operations. This paper will describe engineering experiences associated with upgrading equipment in an operating mill, contained in a confined building. Experiences in teaching the team new ways of operating a mill, and finally the metallurgical rewards that have been reaped will be described.INTRODUCTIONMining in Idaho’s Silver ValleyIdaho’s Silver Valley is a 64-km long valley flanked by the US Northern Rocky mountains, seldom more the 3-km wide, and stretching across much of Idaho’s northern panhandle, roughly 150 km south of the Canadian border. Mining has been continuously active in the area for more than 140 years, during which time, the Silver Valley has become one of the richest silver producing districts in the world, and as of 1985 had out-produced the 500 years of production from the famed Potosi district in Bolivia. Since 1885, almost 100 deposits have been discovered and worked in the district (Chapman, 2000)."

Western Australia (WA), alongside Brazil, has remained at the forefront of the global seaborne traded iron ore market for over 40 years. Despite this apparent stability and strong market position, WA continues to face strong external international supply-side competition, mainly from Brazil, but also periodically from often marginal, non-traditional sources of iron ore. Additionally, WA iron ore supply has undergone significant decadal change internally, both of an evolutionary (brownfields expansion) and revolutionary nature (major new greenfields projects). Since 2006, a new generation of WA-focused iron ore explorers, developers and producers have emerged.The majors, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, have expanded mine production to record levels and the Roy Hill project is now approaching nameplate capacity. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) is, however, the largest new market entrant of the last decade, delivering upon their vision of becoming the ‘new force in iron ore’. Unlike most of the other new WA market entrants, FMG’s operations are substantive. Most of the other smaller, new WA iron ore miners have struggled during the period of falling prices, though it is worth noting that collectively they have made a material supply-side impact during the price boom – typical of marginal supply. Finally there have been some contributions from new magnetite projects, however, the delivery and economics of these projects have not met expectations.In this paper, we touch briefly upon the key global market changes of the last decade, namely China-driven demand growth and the changes to the pricing mechanisms for iron ores – before reviewing the rise in WA iron ore supply in response to these markets. We finish by focusing on the most significant WA-focused supply-side development of the last decade, the rise of FMG as a major new supplier and the strategic situation that facilitated its rise. The unprecedented China-led rise in iron ore prices felled many traditional barriers to market entry into an oligopolistic industry, allowing many new market entrants (in WA and around the world). However, the downturn in iron ore prices resurrected these barriers to entry, with only FMG (thus far) breaking the entry barrier with significant scale. Difficult corporate decisions have been forced upon the smaller WA iron ore miners who, in some cases, will now struggle to further expand, or indeed continue to operate in the longer run.The changes that have taken place over the last decade of WA iron ore production hold insights for other emergent mineral commodity exports from the state. Successful market entry, even when industry barriers are high, does not always require an immediate low-cost production assumption alongside a strong balance sheet. FMG could see a new market, within an established commodity market, target an appropriate and new product at it, overcome temporarily-felled barriers to entry in infrastructure and finance, then innovate and aggressively cut costs ensuring it was behind the barriers to entry when they rose again after the price boom.CITATION:Barrere, L, Trench, A, Sykes, J P and Davies, R S, 2017. The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

Deep Mix-in-Place soil stabilisation is achieved by forming columns of soil/cement arranged to overlap by secant intersection. Alternate columns are constructed initially and infilled. The cementitious material injected is designed to retard the strength of the resulting mix thereby allowing satisfactory overlapping. Columns are constructed using a designed large diameter mixing auger mounted on a smaller diameter auger stem. This is firstly screwed to the design depth removing only such spoil as to enable penetration of the auger, and subsequently counter rotated and extracted in a predetermined mixing pattern and grout injection rate to ensure continuous and homogeneous treatment through each successive level. The process is performed whilst monitoring auger depth, grout flow and pressure. Cementation Piling and Foundations Limited used this technique to stabilise allu­vium and to facilitate the construction, by conventional techniques, of a circular pumping station pit of 10M diameter to 10M below ground level. The work was carried out within 3M of adjacent domestic properties, and on a very restricted site in Elland, West Yorkshire. Ground conditions consist of 2M of cohesive alluvium becoming water bearing and increasingly sandy and gravelly with cobbles which overlies the mudstones at 10.0m depth. Sandstones beneath formed an aquiclude to artesian ground water with the underside of the open excavation approxi­mately 1.0M from the top of this material. Peripheral treatment into the mudstone, coupled with pressure relief wells, proved successful and final excavation depth was achieved in "the dry".

Paper 1?South African experience with asbestos-related environmental mesothelioma: Is fiber type important? Neil White, Gill Nelson, Jill Murray The purpose of this review was to illustrate the importance of the type of asbestos in environmental mesothelioma. South Africa is a logical place to assess fiber type. The three major types of asbestos (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) were mined (all asbestos mining stopped in 2002) in South Africa. The association between asbestos and mesothelioma was discovered in South Africa. The occupational literature indicates high mesotheliomagenic potential for crocidolite, less for amosite and less still for chrysotile. Since South Africa has been a major source of crocidolite, relatively high rates of mesothelioma in the mining population is not surprising. High rates of mesothelioma due to environmental exposure is surprising, except perhaps when the authors? point out potential sources for community exposures (e.g., mine tailings used for road surfacing, golf courses, brick and plaster making; insulation in residential ceilings; children playing on fiber-rich waste rock). The authors? reviewed four studies reporting on mesothelioma cases and their sources of exposure and fiber type. Overall 23% of the known cases were attributed to the environmental (not occupational) exposure and about 90% were due to crocidolite asbestos. The proportion of environmental mesothelioma is considerably higher than in Western Australia where crocidolite is also mined. In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project&apos;s planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

Despite low commodity prices and mining industry cutbacks throughout the world, Peru remains one of the industry’s bright spots. The country’s remarkable economic turnaround during the 1990s remains a model for other developing nations to follow. And the Peruvian government has not forgotten the industry that was instrumental in that turnaround. True, the country has not been spared the effects of the mining industry’s retrenchment that has occurred in other parts of the world. However, foreign mining companies remain committed to doing business in Peru. And the government remains committed to attracting foreign investment and maintaining a strong mining industry. This commitment was evident in September 1999during the 24th Convention of the Institutos de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru in Arequipa, Peru. More than 3,000 mining industry professionals from around the world attended the convention. And Extemin, the accompanying exhibit, featured more than 450 companies, many from the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and other countries.

This paper is intended partly as a summary of the conclusions that have been arrived at by various authorities on this matter, and also with a view to initiate some discussion on the subject, especially as most of the quartz gold mines in Victoria are operated without having any proper assay plans or any idea of the real values other than those given by the mining managers, who, from experience in the particular cases, are supposed to be able to arrive at a correct idea of the true values of- the ore, and, in many cases, oppose any other methods than their own, holding the view that no sampling is equal in correctness to the bulk sample of the battery. The necessity of properly sampling and estimating the ore in a mine in every case, perhaps hardly needs to be urged on the members of the Institute, but is not, apparently, so obvious to others.It is proposed to confine this paper to the sampling of ore reserves in a mine, and the various points which have to be taken into consideration in arriving at values, from the assayer&apos;s point of view, leaving the methods of sampling metallurgical products out of consideration for the present. &quot;It is advisable to define&quot; ore reserves&quot; as ore exposed on three sides at least, and accessible to the sampler on all three. &quot;Prospective ore&quot; would include all ore not so fully exposed; but which may, from the nature of the case, and the geological conditions prevailing, be reasonably supposed to exist.
