Micropiles are routinely used in the United States for foundation support and underpinning applications. The high capacities achievable with the use of micropiles, combined with specialty rigs for easy installation in low headroom and difficult access areas makes them a good choice for situations often encountered on existing commercial projects. The bond zone of the pile is typically drilled into a competent stratum such as sands, gravels or bedrock. In this paper, the authors will discuss a project where the lack of a shallow ?competent stratum? led the geotechnical contractor to create their own bond zone for the micropiles using jet grouting. Due to problematic clay (CH) soils, the original foundation of a six story office building in west Houston had experienced up to five inches of differential movement in-between the shallow under-reamed shafts. The owner desired a permanent solution to the problem without disturbing the majority of the tenants. The structure was underpinned with a hybrid system of jet grouted micropiles as well as jet grouting alone and the structure was re-leveled using hydraulic equipment to within a 0.25? tolerance. Design, construction and sequencing of the project are discussed in the paper. QA/QC methods are also discussed, including coring for verification of jet grout column diameter as well as a full-scale micropile compressive load test. The structure was successfully re-leveled and the entire project was completed without disturbing any tenants on the floors two through six.

In November 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake caused more than 100,000 cubic meters of rock and debris to tumble down and bury the transportation infrastructure below Ohau Point in New Zealand. All routes between the northern and southern portions of South Island were severed. To undertake the rebuilding efforts, the New Zealand government established North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) – an alliance to repair the road and rail networks between Picton and Christchurch. NCTIR’s aim was to have the road open by Christmas 2017, but work also continued into 2018 to complete a number of safety improvements along the highway. The presentation will review the initial remediation attempts, the necessity to re-evaluate the original efforts, the need to incorporate techniques that were “outside-the-box” and different from traditional methods, and the logistics and planning that were required to complete the work safely. INTRODUCTION Shortly after midnight on Monday 14th November, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the small South Island settlement of Waiau in North Canterbury, 100km north of Christchurch. The quake was the largest in New Zealand since the magnitude 7.8 Dusky Sound earthquake in 2009 (GNS 2016). While shaking was widespread with over 15,000 recorded ‘felt reports,’ the worst shaking occurred about 50 seconds after the quake rupturing started. The energy of the tremor progressed north over several minutes with surface rupture recorded on a total of 21 faults. The length of all the fault ruptures combined was close to 100km (GNS 2016). The degree of ground shaking was high, recorded as Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) Level 8 – Severe. This level of shaking causes considerable damage in ordinary buildings with partial collapse including fall of chimneys, factory stacks, columns, monuments, walls, etc. At a human level, people experience difficulty standing; while furniture and appliances shift. Geologically, the damage depends on the geological setting. In Kaikoura and the surrounding area, especially the coastal highway State Highway 1, north and south of the town, many of the slopes consist of over steepened weathered, fractured greywacke. During the quake, the shaking caused significant and widespread damage with a total of 26 major slips (and many smaller slips); closing both State Highway 1 and the Main North Rail Line between Picton and Christchurch.

Since 80's we built the first deepwater wharf of Shenzhen chiwan port which has 3 berths of 10000 dwt, We have built 3 berths for vessels of 40000 dwt both in Shekou Port and Chiwan port. The berths for carriers of 10000 dwt in Yantian Port of Dapeng Bay are constructing now. In the five years, We built more than 20 deepwater berths of 5000 dwt to 40000 dwt. This paper will introduce how to solve the difficulties of the complex geological conditions and how to use the new fashion construction. We will reduce the period of engineering construction and get good quality and make a good beginning of rapid development of port construction in ShenZhen Special Economic Zone.

When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.

THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their'ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- "The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. "A 15 cm diameter by 732 cm height, fully automated pilot column was installed in the Agnico-Eagle’s Laronde concentrator (Québec), for evaluating the performance of newly developed sensors and advanced process control algorithms. For eventual comparison purposes, the pilot column is continuously fed with the same slurry feeding the copper-circuit third cleaner column. It is equipped with electrical conductivity-based sensors for estimating the three variables used in the multi-variable control algorithm under evaluation: froth depth, fraction of wash water underneath the interface and gas hold-up. Froth depth is regulated using a PI controller while a predictive controller is formulated as the minimization of the tracking errors of gas hold-up and bias rate, keeping several operating constraints between their practical upper and lower limits. In particular, an unreachable high set point of gas hold-up can be selected in order to maximize the bubble surface area available for particle collection, while maintaining bias rate above a minimum value required for froth cleaning. The proposed strategy may indirectly help optimizing flotation column operation by using these secondary variables, without the implementation of a real-time optimization layer.INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have already been used for more than 30 years, mainly in cleaning stages, as a result of their froth washing capabilities. Despite their widespread usage, the measurement of some pertaining variables and their use for automatic control is rather scarce. Among the most important variables directly related to the process metallurgy (concentrate grade and recovery), froth depth (hf) is the only one normally monitored and controlled. Even though commercial sensors are available, gas hold-up (eg), a variable directly related to concentrate recovery, is seldom measured and never controlled. Another important variable, bias rate (Jb) responsible for concentrate cleaning, is simply not measured at all, as there is no commercial sensor available. Therefore, besides froth depth, continuous monitoring of process variables is limited to flow rates (gas, feed, tailings, wash water), i.e. to manipulated variables. Some new available sensors have been industrially tested, e.g. the Sonar-TracTM for eg (O'Keefe, Viega & Fernald, 2007) and the McGill hold-up sensor (Tavera & Escudero, 2002). Others, for bias rate and frother concentration, have been successfully validated at laboratory scale by Laval’s LOOP researchers (Maldonado, Desbiens, del Villar & Chirinos, 2008b; Maldonado, Desbiens, del Villar & Aguilera, 2010a). Some devices have been extensively used for monitoring bubble size and space distri-bution, e.g. McGill bubble viewer (Gomez & Finch, 2007) and others."

"INTR0DUCTIONThis publication is a third of a series devoted to falls of roof and coal in coal mines of the Western States. It gives the results of examinations of the mines of the Rock Springs coal District of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which represent the principal coal beds therein and approximately 75 percent of total production of the State.A study was made of safety conditions at all the producing mines of the district and suggestions were offered the operators regarding methods and practices which would, in the opinion of the writer, provide additional safeguards to prevent accidents from falls of roof and coal.In presenting the subject, consideration must be given to such features as character of the coal beds, depth of cover. methods of mining, timbering practice, roof testing and supervision, and for comparative purposes to certain statistical matter bearing upon relation of accidents to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and lost days due to accidents during the 3—year period covered by this study.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer acknowledges the cooperation of the officials of the various coal companies, without whose assistance this work could not have been completed.F0UR REPRESENTATIVE COAL OPERATIONSThis report relates to four representative coal operations in the Rook Springs district of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which are referred to as mines A, B, C, and D. This paper describes the behaviour, under creep conditions, of a cast lead creep specimen consisting of five crystals, the boundaries of these crystals being substantially at right angles to the direction' of tension, i.e., across the long axis of the specimen. This particular specimen was obtained in an attempt to produce a single crystal in the manner described in the appendix of a previous paper (1).Thus, the specimen was of the same shape and size, was composed of the same purity lead and received the same preliminary treatment as the single crystal test-pieces.The object of the experiment was mainly to observe the effect of the crystal boundaries on both the deformation of the test piece and the process of recrystallisation and to compare the creep rate of the test-piece with that of a specimen consisting of one crystal only.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe specimen had an effective test length of 10 cms. and a cross $ection of 0·5 in. x 0·25 in. In Fig. 1 is given a sketch of the specimen to scale showing the positions of the crystal boundaries on all four surfaces. Two magnesite ores containing 3.15% and 8.73% SiO2 and a calcined magnesite product assaying 2.6% Si02 were first reduced in size to -20 mesh by roll crushing. 'They were then treated dry on a high intensity magnetic separator to reduce their silica content by rejecting iron-stained silicate minerals in the magnetic fraction and obtaining marketable magnesite or calcined magnesite as a nonmagnetic product.

As a discipline, geophysics covers an enormous range of scales and applications - from planetary geophysics through to the monitoring of acoustic emissions of rock samples. Although it is not a core discipline within the mining industry, geophysics has a useful role in providing information on the nature of the rock mass and the way it is responding to the mining process. For coal mining purposes, geophysical studies mainly seek to - delineate boundaries between the coal and the various layers within the surrounding strata - determine the physical properties of the rocks in-si tu, and - monitor the response of the rocks to the mining process Some of these applications may be associated primarily with mine planning, but once a mine is underway, most geophysical results can be used for the purposes of ground control. For example, insights into the nature of a geological fault mapped by a 3D seismic reflection survey will be relevant to determining support requirements while mining through it. In some instances there are parallels in the use of geophysics by the petroleum industry. Seismic reflection and wireline logging techniques have mainly been developed for petroleum exploration where their on-going development continues to provide spin-offs for the coal industry. The 3D seismic survey techniques that we now routinely employ were in their infancy 25 years ago and, almost certainly, the high quality borehole scanning tools that are now available would not have been developed without the need for petroleum well evaluation. Mining has also led to the development of specific techniques. An example is microseismic monitoring for the management of roof conditions during longwalling, and also the prediction of rock and coal bursts. The use and success of this technique have grown greatly over recent years. Another example lies with the use of geophysical wireline logs to predict rock strength and in rock mass classification. Coal seams also provide an unusual geophysical situation in that they form seismic and electromagnetic waveguides. The in-seam seismic and radio imaging methods have been developed to exploit these geological properties. In this paper I address the development and application of geophysical methods such as these with a particular emphasis on their role in ground control. We will see that there have been many developments over the past 25 years but we should also think about the future and how geophysics needs to be developed. From a miner?s perspective, one obvious area of need is in the detection of voids in the vicinity of current mine workings, be they old workings or karsts within nearby carbonate beds.

"Recent innovations in metal smelting technology utilize continuous oxygen-enriched smelting and converting processes which are capable of producing off-gases containing up to 60% SO2 or more. Other SO2 recovery processes, involving solvent absorption and steam or vacuum regeneration, can produce off-gases with SO2 concentrations nearing 100%.Processing of these high-concentration SO2 off-gases in conventional sulfuric acid plants can cause excessively high catalyst bed temperatures and poor SO2 conversion. In order to avoid these problems, a conventional acid plant design must dilute these high SO2 process gasses with dilution air in order to provide the required oxygen to effectively convert the SO2 and provide a heat sink (via the inert N2) such that the exothermic reaction, SO2 + ½ O2 ???SO3, does not exceed the temperature limit of the catalyst or the converter vessel.MECS, Inc. (MECS) has proven that a high SO2 feed gas design can be a viable option which can increase energy recovery, reduce energy consumption and potentially reduce capital costs."

The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

As part of a purchase of a fleet of Caterpillar 785 trucks, Round Mountain Gold Corp., Cashman Equipment Co. and Caterpillar Inc. entered into a four-year contract for the major maintenance of the fleet of trucks. This contract includes fixed costs and guaranteed availability. The results have been excellent, and the fleet of trucks performs well. History The Smoky Valley Common Operation is a unique mine. Through a mixture of diligence and foresight, it has become the largest open-pit, heap leaching gold mine in the world. This was no small feat considering the remote area surrounding the mine. Round Mountain is located in north-central Nye County, NV. To the east of the town and mine lies the Central Toquima mountain range. To the west is the Toiyabe mountain range. Between them is the Big Smoky Valley, a flat expanse of sagebrush, salt grass and fine dirt.

A study was conducted to investigate the damage potential to underground multiseam openings caused due to vibration generated by open-pit coal mine blasting. The objective was to recommend optimal explosives weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit blasts to ensure the safety and stability of underground openings. Sixteen blasts with varying charge weights and initiation sequences were conducted at Samleshawari open-pit mine and eighty four blast vibration data were recorded in the Hingir Rampur underground colliery in India. Analysis of vibration data showed that roof of the underground openings vibrated with much higher amplitudes compared to those in pillars and floors. The amplifications of vibration in the roof at the junction were upto 4.3 times the pillar vibration. It was observed that coal chips detached from roof when the peak particle velocity reached 131 mm/s or higher. The vibration magnitude recorded was higher in upper-seam openings than in belowseam openings. Rapid attenuation of vibration was recorded in below-seam openings at similar locations. Appropriate particle velocity-charge weight-distance equations were established to calculate the safe explosive weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit mine for the safety of multi-seams workings of underground mine. The support for the galleries and junctions were further modified for the working seams to ensure greater safety.

The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d'Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party' will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. The paper describes the technology as it is applied to processes where the back pressure at the point of injection is greater than 50 kPaG. It reviews earlier systems of injection and more recent developments that address concerns for instantaneous control in modern smelters. The new technologies fall into two groups, (1) modified pressure-difference control (sub-divided into simple and complex) and (2) mechanical-feeder-based control. Features of current injection systems include feed splitting in two forms, passive and active, and co-current injection.

"Gold cyanidation rates are known to be limited by the rate of oxygen dissolution in the cyanidation tanks. The effect of solids loading on the oxygen dissolution rates is not obvious and the results of previous studies are ambiguous. The present paper presents an analysis of oxygen dissolution rates using a ""spent"" commercial gold slurry diluted to various levels of solids loading. It was found, in an 170 litre stirred tank reactor using an inverted cone sparger, that under certain high loading conditions, there was a decrease of as much as 50 %, i.e., there was a halving of the rate of oxygen dissolution as compared to that in clean water. In particular, it was observed that, due to gas flooding of the impeller, there was a drop in kLa even with an increase of gas velocity. Gas holdup reached a maximum value of only 1.7 %. The total power consumption was between 0.06- 0 .10 kw/m3 within the range of gas velocity before flooding occurred. The decrease in oxygen dissolution rate with increased solids loadings is believed to be mainly due to the increase in the apparent viscosity which reduced the turbulence and shearing effect and resulted in larger bubbles and hence reduced the reaction area a. The interrelations between solids loading, gas holdup, flow pattern, power consumption, and liquid mass transfer coefficient are discussed.IntroductionThe reactors generally used in gold cyanidation are Stirred Tank Reactors (STR). Compared with other types of reactors like fluidized bed reactor and column reactor, STR is of particular importance due to its wide application in industry.
