The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

ALTHOUGH the mechanical and chemical characteristics of certain iron-nickel-silicon alloys have been investigated,1 the available literature shows no results of a systematic investigation of the constitution of this system. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the constitution of the iron-rich iron-nickel-silicon alloys at 600°C. Data on the constitution of the included binary systems obtained in other investigations have been correlated with the structure of the ternary alloys. Jette and Foote2 have presented a tentative constitutional diagram of the iron-nickel system following X-ray studies on quenched specimens. This diagram shows that the alloys at 600°C. containing from zero to approximately 4 atomic per cent nickel consist of a body-centered cubic (alpha) phase, the alloys containing 4 to 24 atomic per cent nickel consist of body-centered cubic (alpha) and face- centered cubic (gamma) phases, and the alloys containing from 24 to 100 atomic per cent nickel consist of a face-centered cubic (gamma) phase. These investigators recognized that it was not possible to retain the gamma phase in equilibrium by quenching alloys containing less than approximately 25 atomic per cent nickel and that high-temperature X-ray methods were desirable to determine the gamma-phase solubility limit. In a later investigation of the iron-nickel alloys, Owen and Sulley3 determined the alpha-phase solid solubility limit to be 3.5 atomic per cent nickel at 600°C. High-temperature X-ray methods showed the solid solubility limit of the gamma phase to be 14 atomic per cent nickel at 600°C. Since the high-temperature X-ray method should reveal equilibrium conditions in these alloys better than the quench method of other investigators, the results of Owen and Sulley pertaining to the gamma-phase boundary are to be preferred. As the result of an X-ray investigation of quenched iron-silicon alloys, Greiner and Jette4 have shown these materials to consist of a body-centered cubic (alpha) phase containing from o to 26.4 atomic per cent silicon at 600°C. The alloys containing from 26.4 to approximately 50 atomic per cent silicon consist of two phases at 600°C.; namely, alpha and eta. The eta phase corresponds to the stoichiometrical formula FeSi (33.4 wt. per cent Si).* The literature pertaining to the constitution of the nickel-silicon alloys has been reviewed by Ackerman,5 who found disagreements in the results of various investigators on several parts of the system. Slippery and unstable working platforms spoiled not only by natural weather conditions but also by the effects of the construction process (drilling mud, grout slurry) are among the main sources of hazards. Due to this fact a set of recommendations for execution and maintenance of working platforms are presented in this paper, which is based on a study on this subject that is being carried out by AETESS, the Spanish Federation of Geotechnical Contractors. The main objective of this paper is to establish the basis for the right execution and maintenance of working platforms for geotechnical jobs with the idea of increasing safety and productivity. All the aspects involved in working platform safety are analyzed: ground and equipment characteristics, geometric conditions and working platform maintenance. From this analysis a set of general requirements is proposed together with the necessary specific controls before and after the equipment arrival to the job site. In order to facilitate this analysis some flow charts and tables and specific appendixes for each geotechnical technique are included.

The August 2007 Crandall Canyon mine disaster raised national awareness of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) in Utah as well as general interest in how seismic monitoring might improve mine safety in the region. Unlike the situation in most other mining areas in the U.S., local seismographs in Utah?s Wasatch Plateau (WP) and Book Cliffs (BC) coal fields are an integral part of a modern real-time earthquake information system developed by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) as part of an Advanced National Seismic System. The UUSS earthquake catalog contains a continuous record of MIS at all active mine sites in the WP-BC region since 1978 (more than 18,000 seismic events = M 4.2). We describe characteristics of MIS and current seismic monitoring capabilities in the WP-BC region. We then demonstrate, using MIS from an example Utah coal mine, the ability to refine event locations with estimated absolute errors of ~200 m or less using a combination of (1) a double-difference relocation methodology and (2) ground truth information provided by mine operators. This approach enables sufficient spatial resolution to correlate MIS with mining activities, providing a useful tool to help improve mine safety.

Defining the concept of sustainability is an important step for industry and society. It is necessary in order to clarify what it means when debunking the many misinterpretations pervasive in different levels of anthropogenic activities. Essentially, the extractive industry has a harvest of differences. Mining involves the extraction of natural resources which are finite, exhaustible, non-renewable, unsustainable, and pay only once. It is remarkable that the definition of sustainability that we will shortly arrive at has totally different characteristics from the definition accepted throughout society. We categorize nature as having its own destiny which is controlled by its own rules and principles and its own society, and is part of nature; therefore, society depends on nature and not vice versa as the initial focus. To society there are no conditions to humanize nature but only respect nature?s rules. It was a challenge to find simplicity for this task not only for the definition but also for the explanation of this concept specifically, to answer the question, ?what is the true meaning of sustainability?? Finally, we are also able through this definition to provide fuel for wide discussions and stimulate critical thinking to improve such a concept. As a result, we present this definition as the tool for society today and for future generations.

Although for many years considerable attention has been given to devising safe and efficient methods of using explosives, with some success, relatively little has been done to provide satisfactory storage facilities for them. This was known long before the present war began, but it was emphasized during the past 30 months? inspections of explosive magazines by employees of the Bureau of Mines in administration of the Federal Explosives Act of December 26, 1941. These inspections have revealed woeful in adequacy as well as definite hazards and the urgent need for obtaining better storage facilities either by remodeling old magazines or constructing ink new ones that would afford suitable protection for the contents against theft, fire, deterioration, and detonation. The purpose of this paper is to offer suggestions and to show by sketches and drawings some of the fundamental features of suitable magazines. Type of construction and available materials differ with different; localities, but the information herein contained can be applied to most magazines, whether already constructed or the construct: on of which is planned. It is hoped that this information will be helpful and will aid persons who are trying to provide suitable storage for explosives end detonators. It is also hoped that States and cities will be made aware of the unbelievable laxity practiced in storing explosives in the United States and will take some remedial action.

Costs of disposing of steel slag are estimated based on the present method and a proposed alternate method for a steel mill in the Pittsburgh area. Estimated cost data were calculated by the Bureau of Mines and do not reflect the investment and operating costs and credits of a specific steel mill and processing plant. The alternate method of steel slag disposal would result in an appreciable cost savings to the mill and concurrently supply the industrial and commercial markets with low-cost, high-quality construction materials.

THE Hamilton Works of The Steel Company of Canada is a fully integrated steel plant with an annual capacity of three million tons. Located on the south shore of -Hamilton bay, it is in the centre of Hamilton's industrial belt. The heavy concentration of industrial activities found in this area, accompanied metallurgical well-known sources of pollution which are normal to urban areas is creating a pollution problem which concerns both industry and the general public. The Steel Company of Canada has recognized this problem and, accordingly, has adopted the policy of integrating suitable pollution control devices into its new installations. Much effort is also being expended to control the emissions of air contaminants from the existing equipment. At the Hamilton Works, there are two main sources of metallurgical dust emissions to the atmosphere -the Open Hearth furnaces and the Sinter Plant. The Bahama's petroleum-dominated minerals sector constricted again in 1985. The declines were mostly the result of a soft market demand for crude oil and petroleum products. In early 1984, it was a growing unprofitability that prompted Charter Oil Co. to cease using the 350,000-barrel-per-day Bahamas Oil Refining Co. facility that it jointly owns with Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd. After midyear 1985, because of poor petroleum economics, Chevron announced it would close the refinery, leaving only a maintenance crew. In 1984, the refinery exported less than 26 million barrels of petroleum products. Chevron's throughput was reported as averaging about 8,000 barrels per day at the time of the announcement. The crude oil transshipment terminal also registered declining activity and financial losses in 1984 and 1985. Transshipments of petroleum in 1985 amounted to about 100,000 barrels per day, one-half as much as in 1982.

The recurring problem of joint failures in ofjshore structures, coupled with the catastrophic collapse of many of these structures during Hurricane Hilda (1964), hay forced reconsideration of techniques presently used to design sfuctural joints. This paper presents results of studies conducted for this reconsiderat?on. Only right-angled T-joint,s and cross-joints where a brace was welded directly to the undisturbed surface of another tube (the chord) were considered. Tests were performed on seven T-joint and 12 oross-joint specimens of two types which were designed to give a broad but practicd range to the geometrical parameters believed to be of significance to the problem. These paramefers were expressed in dimensionless form. Each specimen of the T-joints was instrumented wirh both electrical resistance strain gauges and deflection dials. After the elastic tests were concluded, each specimen was loaded to failure by applying an axial tensile load to the brace. The cross-joints were tested to failure without measuring elastic strains. Theoretical solutions for the stresses in a cylindrical shell due to a distributed radial load over portions of its surface were numerically evaluated. The experimental results are compared with calculated values obtained using Bijlaard's and Dundrova's theoretical analyses. INTRODUCTION During the last IS years a large number of structures were built for the offshore exploration of oil both in the Gulf of Mexico and dong the Pacific Coast.' In all these offshore platforms, the tubular shape was extensively used since this shape provides outstanding strength in proportion to its weight, compared to other shapes, when all directions (x, y, z) are considered. Past use of tubes was hampered because of connection details. But with the advent of welding, it became no more difficult to connect tubular shapes than to connect rolled shapes. However, some problems have been encountered in actual construction in making welded joints that are adequate and yet economical. In trying to connect tubular members, designers have used a varied number of methods; consequently, some of the joints seem to be very expensive in detail while others appear weak and underdesigned. An inspection of offshore platforms owned by different companies indicates the use of a large number of joint arrangements and configurations. Such a variety of joint types in current service indicates the wide divergence of opinion that exists on how such joints should be designed, stiffened and strengthened. Fig. 1 shows the various types of connections that have been used in practice. This paper reviews the present state of art on tubular joints of the T and cross type, and presents results of experimental and analytical work being conducted at The U. of Texas and elsewhere. It is believed that such information will be of great help to designers for the formulation of proper design procedures for joints. CONNECTION PROBLEM Recently, cracks have been observed in several welded connections in offshore structures. Fortunately, until about 1 1/2 years ago, these failures have been localized and have not resulted in the collapse of structures or loss of life. For example, one platform installed in Louisiana during 1955 in about 60 ft of water had been subjected to four tropical hurricanes. This platform successfully withstood these forces and was later removed because operations at this location had been completed. Many joint failures were observed during the removal.

Methylisobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and methoxy polypropylene glycol (Dowfroth 250) bubble thin films were characterized by composition and thickness determinations, using FT-IR spectroscopy and UV-Visible spectrophotometry, respectively. The infrared investigation indicates that the role of frother molecules in creating bubble thin films is based on their effectiveness in inducing H-bonding reorganization of the surrounding free water molecules into a coherent network. From UV-Visible interference patterns, it is found that MIBC forms films with a measured critical end thickness of less than 160 nm, compared to 612 ± 30 nm for Dowfroth 250. The observed values of the free water layer thickness are comparable at 5.65 ± 0.28 µm for MIBC and 6.75 ± 0.34 µm for Dowfroth 250. A higher stability of an MIBC bubble over a Dowfroth 250 bubble is related to the different polarization and orientation of the molecules sustaining the boundary surface water network. The findings are used to explain the different action and associated froth characteristics of the two common industrial frothing agents.

"Italy is one of the major producers of ceramics in the world. Ceramic production requires large quantities of K-feldspar, which is commonly sourced from granites, alkali-granites, and “granitic” sands. These rocks contain other minerals, such as quartz, plagioclase and mafic minerals, which are undesirable for ceramic production. Due to the coarse mineral grains that constitute these rocks, a reasonable liberation is achieved at a relatively coarse grind size.This paper reports a study conducted on the separation of K-feldspar from quartz, plagioclase and biotite, from a feed of ground granite. The feasibility of the separation using a dynamic dense medium separation system has been investigated, as an alternative to the traditional flotation technique. The use of a two stages cylindrical vessel (Tri-Flo) was preferred to a conical vessel, due to the improved separation efficiency. Tests were conducted on two samples of crushed granite having size distributions of –3 +1 mm and –1 +0.5 mm.Heavy liquid analysis was performed on the two samples. As the rheological properties of the dense medium interact with the separation efficiency, the stability and viscosity of the dense medium were controlled and kept within an appropriate range; which was achieved with the addition of an artificial contaminant (clay) to the dense medium."

"Copper and copper alloys remain key materials for society today, with important uses found in the electrical, transportation, and construction industries. Copper demand is rising, with projections indicating that by 2025 global refined copper demand will increase to 29.5 million tons, up from the 22.4 million tons anticipated for 2015. This will require the opening up of dozens of new mines and numerous new smelters over this time period. Fortunately, Africa has significant reserves of copper, and African copper can once again play a key role in contributing to meeting the rising global demand for copper. This paper provides a brief overview of the current copper smelting operations in Southern Africa. INTRODUCTION Copper and copper alloys are essential materials for today’s modern world. The familiar green copper patina colour seen on buildings and other structures sometimes belies its true “green” characteristic – copper is essential for key emerging technologies such as wind turbines, tidal generating systems, solar energy systems, electric cars and the like. Consequently, it is believed that there will be continued growth in copper demand in the years ahead. Projections indicate that by 2025, as an example, global refined copper demand will increase to 29.5 million metric tons, up from the 22.4 million ton level anticipated for 2015. This will require dozens of new mines, and of the order of the equivalent of 10 to 12 new 0.5 million tons of copper/year-sized copper smelters (after factoring projected copper produced by electrowinning (EW))—overall, a huge undertaking. Fortunately, Africa has significant reserves of copper, and African copper can once again play a key role in supplying this rising global demand for copper. Africa’s share of global mined copper production was about 10% in 2014; however this will increase significantly in future if announced new projects eventuate. Southern Africa has an important role to play in this process. The present paper provides a brief overview of copper smelting in Southern Africa."

"In order to achieve a high recovery of particles finer than 10µm, three types of dry Tower Mill (VD-1, KD-1, KD-2 and KD-3) have been developed. These mills differ from each other in the size of the comminuting part, the inside diameter and shape of the classifying part and the system involved in the collecting process. The last version (KD-3) of tower mills in which the comminuting and classifying operations has been separated, can produce particles finer than 10µm from a limestone ore sizing from 420 to 3360µm. In this tower mill, products in comminuting section are blown up and transported into the classifying column, made of an inverted cone on top of a cylinder, before they agglomerate and settle down. Fine particles are deported and recovered in a cyclone with a central spiral ribbon.Previous studies on the grinding efficiency of the tower mill KD-3 have shown how the maximum size of collected products increased with the airflow velocity, disturbing in the same way a smooth regulation of the grinding operation with the tower mill KD-3. A complete knowledge of factors that influence the maximum size of collected products is needed, therefore, to increase the efficiency of the grindingclassifying operation and ensure a better control over the collected products. The present study deals with this issue and, assuming that the structure of the classifying column could be one of these factors, its internal structure was modified (insertion of vertical plates, cone or horizontal nets) before carrying out comminution tests that would establish a relationship between the inward shape of the column and the maximum size of collected products. It was found that the weight of products collected in the cyclone decreases when a cone or some horizontal nets are inserted inside the column. At the same time, the weight of products collected in the column increases. This is due to the fact that coarse particles blown up from the comminution section collide with the base of the cone or the nets and settle down the bottom of the classifying column. Therefore, the cone and some horizontal nets inserted inside a classifying column, have the particularity to stabilize the maximum size of particles (15.1-17.5µm and 8.4-11.3µm) in the cyclone even when the airflow velocity in duct increased. These tools could of great help in the production of particles of definite size to fit for instance the paper industries requirements (production of limestone material sizing - 10µm as paper filler)."

The author would like to refer to his contribution to the paper `Design of pillar systems in South Africa' by Ozbay et al. 1. The authors agreed `wholeheartedly that further research, together with carefully planned field trials, in pursuit of this potentially highly rewarding concept' of the small span small pillar method is warranted. On 30 September 2010 the author went underground at the Kroondal Chrome Mine to observe how the concept of smaller spans was being applied. He was pleasantly surprised to find that the typical coal mine bord and pillar sytem was being used very successfully. Although the deepest mining was taking place at a depth of only 450 metres, Kroondal would be an ideal mine to do further research together with carefully planned field trials. At Crown Mines Gold Mine, where the author worked, he was informed that the first recorded rockburst took place at a depth of 635 metres below surface. The depth of the platinum and chrome mines is increasing, with the risk of an excalation in injuries and fatalities due to 'backbreaks' and siesmic activity. The rock engineer at Kroondal was not aware of backbreaks occuring on the mine. It is important that the rock engineers of the base mineral and gold mines get together and give more serious attention to the host rock environment in which the pillars are situated.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

This marks the 100th year that the aggregate industry has been served by a national association. Of all the accomplishments this longstanding relationship has achieved, there is probably none greater than the progress made, in worker safety. Perhaps the best way to measure this success is to examine injury trends in the aggregate miner population. For example, in the first half of the 20th [ ] century, 16 quarry mining disasters (a "disaster" is an incident with five or more fatalities) claimed 157 miners between 1909 and 1952. The largest of these was the disaster at the Sandts Eddy Limestone Quarry near Allentown, Pa., on March 26, 1942, where 31 miners died of asphyxiation by fumes/explosion. Thankfully, no mining disasters have occurred in the aggregate industry since 1952. It is these kinds of information that help us characterize improvements in aggregate worker safety over the last 100 years.
