In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

"INTRODUCTION Determination of the thermodynamic properties of metallurgically important compounds of chromium has been one of the activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines. Earlier reports have dealt with the entropies 4/ 5/ of chromium, chromic oxide, and chromous and chromic chlorides, with the thermodynamic properties of the chlorides of chromium, 6/ and wits the thermodynamic properties of the carbides and oxide of chromium. 7/ Evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of chromite, FeO.Cr2O3, is desirable, as this material in impure form constitutes the only natural source of chromium of any consequence.Two general methods are available for directly determining heats of formation - (1) measurement of heats of combustion and (2) measurement of heats of solution. Neither of these methods is directly applicable at present to ferrous chromite, which accounts for the lack of previous data. Combustion of a stoichiometrical mixture of iron and chromium under conditions prevailing in a calorimetric bomb yields a mixture of iron and chromium oxides rather than chromite. None of the usual calorimetric solution media dissolve chromite at temperatures low enough for solution calorimetry. Sulfuric acid and an oxidizing agent, such as MnO2 or CrO3, are known to dissolve chromite, but the possible calorimetric use of t is medium would require long preliminary investigation. Consequently, recourse must be taken to some indirect method. At the start of the present work, the most promising method appeared to be the determination of equilibria in the selective, reduction of the iron in chromite by hydrogen;"

The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. Effective gas management in coal mines, as well as proper ventilation design, is very important for maintaining the safety of underground coal miners. Advances in numerical modeling techniques have enabled evaluations of the coal mining environment using advanced grid designs and computed gas distributions through detailed mathematical models. These models help engineers to see the unseen areas of the mine through visualization of the data and ultimately help improve worker safety. This paper summarizes the modeling efforts conducted by NIOSH in the U.S. and CSIRO in Australia to address various gas management issues encountered in longwall mines. The modeling studies involved two of the most widely used grid-based techniques, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical reservoir modeling. This paper discusses the application of these techniques for gob inertization and gas control for spontaneous combustion, pre-mining degasification of coalbeds, gob gas venthole design and performance evaluation in longwalls, and gas management during development mining.

"Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised.In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations:• Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie. to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits.• Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant.Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation.Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early 1980's. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill® projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product.JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. The natural cementation strength of retorted oil shale is the focus of this investigation. The optimum retorting temperature and residence time to obtain natural cementation strength in retorted Green River oil shale from western Colorado were determined as follows: [Optimum Conditions for Natural Cementation Maximum Residence Obtained Retorting Time at Compressive Mode of Temperature Temperature Strength' Retorting °F °C hr psikg/cm-2 Direct 1,520 822 2.0 270 19.0 Indirect 1,530 832 2.9 325 22.8] 1 Scattered samples were tested at strengths as high as 463 psi (32.6 k /cm 2) (Run 8, indirect mode) and 406 psi (28.5 kg/cm2) (Run 48, direct mode), but these high strengths were not confirmed by nearby tests. Minus 0.5-inch (1.3-cm) Green River oil shale was heated in a differential retort under conditions simulating potential full-scale retorting processes. The variables investigated were retorting temperature, residence time, retorting mode, and shale grade. Samples of the retorted Green River oil shale were moistened to optimum plus 2% (25%) moisture, compacted to 95% Proctor density, sealed and cured at 100°F (38° C) for up to 40 days. Lower curing temperatures, which are likely in the field, would probably result in significantly slower development of cementation strength, and might lower the ultimate strength developed. However, these effects were not studied in this project. The cured samples were tested for compressive strength, and correlative equations were developed for the increase of compressive strength with curing time as a function of retorting temperatures and residence time. Petrographic analysis indicated that the cementing mechanisms may be the interlocking growth of acicular hydrated calcium aluminum sulfate crystals between the contacts of retorted shale fragments. Samples of the retorted shale were also tested for optimum Proctor density and moisture. Permeability and quality of the leachate of shale from typical runs were determined. The effect of use of retort rather than tap water on compressive strength and leachate after curing was determined. The retorted shale effectively filtered several mineral constituents from the retort water.

In the first paper on the Russell process presented by Mr. Stetefeldt, in May, 1884 (Transactions, xiii.), the process was treated from a purely theoretical standpoint.. 111 his second paper of October, 1886 (Transactions, xv,), the details of the plant, the chemicals used, and the manipulation in both mill and laboratory were treated. The aim of the present paper is to present economical results recently attained, new data affecting the preparation and manipulation of ore in the mill, and a more complete and systematic scheme of laboratory work. This paper is compiled mainly from Mr. Russell's notes of his own experience. Many of these notes, particularly those relating to work at Cusihuiriachic,* Mexico, have been upon work directly under the personal observation of the compiler, who takes pleasure in thus presenting to the Institute, data and considerations of much interest and value pot only to users of the Russell process, but to mill men generally. The description of the chemicals used and of the preparation of the mill-solutions being' in part the same now as when Mr. Stetefeldt's second paper was published, some use is here made of portions of that paper. No theoretical matter is here given. For a treatise containing also the theory of the process the reader is referred to Mr. Stetefeldt's complete work on " Lixiviation of Silver Ores by Hyposulphite Solutions," now in preparation. To facilitate the consultation of this paper, the following synopsis and index is prefixed. The figures in parenthesis indicate the page of this paper on which the subject is treated.

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

Tantalum is a rare element ; estimates indicate that there is less tantalum than gold in the earth's crust . After remaining a laboratory curiosity for many years , it was used to a limited extent and for relatively few years (1903- 1911) for incandescent electric-light -bulb filaments . Another wave of interest in tantalum appeared when its electrolytic-valve action was taken advantage of in charging storage batteries , especially for radio work . Tantalum chargers were eventually displaced by other types of chargers , but for a time they were manufac tured in sufficiently large numbers to create a demand for the metal and to bring about its production on a commercial scale in the United States . As tantalum became available in larger quantities and at substantially lower prices , and as high prices for platinum encouraged the employment of tantalum as a substitute , the metal was put to many new uses . Ferrotantalum was made and sold before the World War , and patents have been taken out for a number of special alloys for industrial purposes , but probably the largest use for the metal to-day is in vacuum tubes .

The Australian underground coal mining industry has made extensive use of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) classification system for a diverse range of purposes in recent years. These include mining method selection, and coal pillar and roof support design. This paper outlines a series of case histories, from large-scale feasibility studies to local support design investigations, that collectively illustrate the broad applicability, advantages, and usefulness of the methodology, as well as some of the current limitations. The key role of the CMRR in an overall hazard definition methodology is demonstrated for a major Australian project, and some ideas with regard to the future application of the CMRR, in the context of geotechnical risk management within a progressive, highly productive extractive industry, are put forward.

Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Additional construction related issues associated with the complete relocation of the GCC plant to Whim Creek will be covered in the conference presentation.

"Soil contamination by oil as well as by other organic pollutants poses a major problem to the environment. Various methods have been used to remove organic contaminants from soil, such as: biological, thermal, chemical and physical. Methods based on Mineral Processing principles have also been used (cyclone separation, gravimetric separation, attritioning and washing). This paper studies the possibility to remove a rich-in-contaminant soil fraction by applying flotation. The contaminated soil was artificially prepared by mixing soil with diesel fuel. Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and a tertiary amine (TA) were used as collectors. The effect of collector quantity added and conditioning time was studied. The results showed that the removal of a rich-in-contaminant soil is feasible while a clean fraction is also obtained. In several cases, the removal of oil-contaminated soil approaches or reaches 100%. Introduction Human activities are intimately associated with environmental pollution to the air, water and soil, as well. Soil pollution from inorganic and organic compounds is of equal importance with that of air and water, as it results in soil degradation and its concomitant problems with respect to meeting the human needs (house building, agriculture etc). Heavy metals along with their compounds are encountered among the most usual soil inorganic pollutants. The corresponding organic soil-pollutants are oil, oil-derivatives, pesticides, various aromatic (benzene, phenols, cresols, toluene etc) and poly-aromatic (naphthalene, anthracene etc) hydrocarbons, as well as various other organic compounds (pyridine, cyclo-hexane etc). Oil remains the basic energy source sharing 38% of the global needs, being followed by coal and gas with a share of 26 and 21% correspondingly [1]. The entire activities related with oil production, transport and consumption promote pollution in the air, water and soil. Consequently, soil pollution from oil is favoured at refineries, storage sites (due to possible pipe and tank leakage, tank cleaning works, loading and transportation) and, finally, at the oil-selling sites. Oil (or diesel-oil) fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons, with 10-20 carbon atoms in the chain of each. It is mainly composed of paraffins, naphthenes and various aromatic compounds. In general, oil is composed of 20-30% in aromatic compounds, 5-6% in naphthenes and the rest is paraffins [1]."

Sustainable development of mineral resources is based on a spatial model of the orebody that is only partly known from exploration drilling and associated geological interpretations. As a result, orebody models generated from the available information are uncertain and require the use of stochastic conditional simulation technique. This paper considers three methods for simulating orebody geology: (1) pluri-Gaussian simulation that limits the allowable contacts between the various units; (2) sequential indicator simulation using indicator kriging; and (3) an experimental multiple-point approach that captures some higher-order spatial statistics. The data requirements of the methods, how to meet them in mining applications, and performance characteristics are discussed. The application of these methods in a hypothetical deposit consisting of three geological units provides a comparison and illustrates the advantages of the different simulation approaches.

"Development of Barrick Gold’s Pierina gold mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of nonore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low-quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high-quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock.A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of highand low-quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included.This paper discusses the unique challenges presented by the site and waste materials, the design methodology and stability analyses, and planned monitoring systems."

Over the years, predictive techniques for Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) and the natural processes affecting acid generation have received considerable attention. Less emphasis has been placed on the sampling strategy and the integration of testwork results with the geological data base. The sampling strategy employed and the development of a geological model to determine the spatial distribution and volume of acid producing material are often crucial for developing cost-effective containment and mitigation measures. The geological model provides a link between the occurrence, timing, destination and placement of mined waste rock. Careful and accurate interrogation of a comprehensive geological database provides this linkage. The AMD testwork program at Cadia in NSW has been designed to identify the temporal selective handling requirements that will be required during operation. Sampling involved collection of representative combinations of all waste rock types identified within an extensive geological database. These samples were subjected to static, kinetic and accelerated weathering predictive tests. Preliminary results have been used to construct a waste block model for the deposit that identifies the quantity and distribution of acid producing material. Integration of the block model with the mine scheduling determines when the material will be mined.

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. "Comparison of the two most commonly used classes of depressant in the South African platinum industry is complicated by the fact that these polymers induce different effects on the surfaces onto which they adsorb. The use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is ionically charged in solution, can lead to increased particle dispersion in addition to the effect of reduced surface hydrophobicity (depression). Guar is typically only slightly charged in solution. Comparison of these two depressants is complicated since it is uncertain whether differences in their action is a result of either depression of dispersion effects.This work investigates the role of dispersion independently to that of depression in the batch flotation of a platinum bearing ore. An inorganic dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (NaHMP) was added in parallel to the uncharged guar depressant to simulate the action of depressants with varying degrees of dispersion. By distinguishing between the material recovered by entrainment and the floatable gangue and by including the effects of froth stability it was possible to decouple the effects of dispersion and depression.The results show that both dispersion and depression led to increased grade of the sulphide minerals. Depression leads to a decreased recovery of floatable gangue minerals. Dispersion leads to an increased recovery rate of these minerals and an accompanying decrease in froth stability."

In the present study the reductive behavior of dust from the rotary kilns (RK), in ferronickel production from nickeliferous Greek laterites, is investigated. The study concerns dust of various origins (washing towers, electrostatic filters, polycyclones) and pellets made from the dust. Reducibility was studied in the temperature range of 700 °C to 850 °C in a laboratory tube furnace. Experimental results showed that reduction degree increases with temperature up to about 800 °C. The rate of reduction is great during the first minutes, giving a reduction degree R% equal to about 25%, in only a few minutes. After this, the rate is decreasing until it diminishes to zero after about 10-20 minutes of reaction. Maximum reduction degree achieved is 26 to 28%. Rates and reduction degrees at various temperatures are higher for the dust samples than those of the respective pellet samples. Keywords: Ferronickel, metallurgy, laterites, pellets, reduction
