Seasonally adjusted new factory orders for primary metals declined in January, February, and March, especially in the steel industry. The decline was part of an apparent slowdown for the entire manufacturing sector. Orders for all durable goods, including not only primary metals, but also clay, glass, and stone products, fabricated metal products, machinery, and transportation equipment, fell in January and February. In March, orders rose a slight 0.8%. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the downturns in durable goods orders in January and February were the first back-to-back declines in 3 years. They were largely attributed to a drop in orders for transportation equipment, mainly auto-mobiles and aircraft, while the small gain in March was due to a surge in aircraft orders. Higher interest rates may be partly responsible for the slowdown in durable goods orders over the past 3 months. The higher rates have also hit the construction industry--another major end-user of minerals. Construction of new homes and apartments fell by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.4% in March, following a 12% decline in February.

Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues that may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Min¬ing Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff cooperation across the country. MEA has also commenced some international teaching initiatives that are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual univer¬sity programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.

Keywords: Recycling, Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite, Ionic Liquids, BMIC Recycling of aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) via electrolysis in ionic liquids at near room temperature was investigated. The electrolytic melt comprised of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) and anhydrous AlCl3. Impure aluminum composite (Duralcan MMC Al-380, 20 vol % SiC) was electrochemically dissolved at the anode and pure aluminum (>98%) was deposited on a copper cathode. The deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractrometer, and mass spectrometer. The influence of various process parameters such as concentration of electrolyte, and applied cell voltage on the recycling process was studied. The recycling process yielded current densities in the range of 200-500 A/m2, and cathode current efficiency of about 85%. The results indicated that impurities such as Cu, Si, Ni, Fe, Mg, Mn, and SiC particles were removed as anode residue. Energy consumption of about 3.7-6.3 kWh/kg-Al was obtained at a cell voltage of 1.0-2.0 V and cell temperature of 100 ± 5°C. Low energy consumption and no emission of pollutants are the two main advantages of this process compared to present recycling processes.

Cyclic behaviour of axially loaded piles has been an issue since studies revealed that the capability to transfer skin friction into the ground is highly depending on the level and the number of load cycles the pile is subjected. It has been shown that degradation of skin friction due to axial cyclic loading leads to accumulating displacements and a severe reduction in pile capacity. In Germany the DIN 1054 as well as the Recommendations of the Working Group 2.1 ?Piles? of the German Geotechnical Society (EA-Pfähle) require the consideration of cyclic loading for the assessment of both the displacements and the capacity. Up to now no broadly accepted design method exists, which enables the engineer to give a reliable judgement on the pile capacity under axial cyclic loading and the displacements respectively. Instead numerous design charts make it possible to distinguish between stable and instable loading levels in order to ensure a design on the safe side. A newly developed design approach based on engineering models is presented which delivers a calculation algorithm for the remaining axial pile capacity after a defined number of load cycles to allow for the analysis of stability of the foundation. Furthermore the computation of accumulating displacements is made possible. The results are verified with pile load tests undertaken at Dunkirk, France and showed that the axial capacity after cyclic loading calculated with the newly developed design approach predicts actual capacity with an accuracy of ±20%.

This paper contains a review of the development of blast furnace? slag handling and processing technology in the Ironmaking industry over the past 30 years, with an emphasis on economic and environmental factors. The requirements and practice of air-cooling slag for use as aggregate and of pelletizing and granulating slag for use in cement manufacture are described. The operation of slag pits, slag pots or ladles, the slag pelletizer and early granulation systems are compared with the new continuous .granulation, dewatering and handling systems developed in the past decade.

The dictionary definition of calibration is: to determine by measurement or comparison with a standard, the corre c t value for each scale reading on a device.1 As a consultant or blast contractor, you assess risk every day. But, have you considered the importance of, and the risks associated with the calibration of your seismograph and the accuracy that is p rovided? Can your calibration pro v i d e r back you up in times of trouble and provide documented evidence that the equipment was functioning within specification? Can their calibration pro c e d u res withstand independent scrutiny and be shown to be traceable to a National Standards for accuracy of measurement? These are important documents that in court provide tremendous support that blasting and monitoring activities are conducted professionally and competently.

Ore concentration processes are a function of the respective particle size distribution; however, most of them do not use an efficient operational method to determine it. From a practical point of view, the surface area can be calculated for any size analysis. The physical principles for determining the size distribution in each method are different, for the results will not be compared directly. During the development of the research project of the sulfide ore flotation method using inert gas, different methods for calculating the specific surface area have been used, such as sieving, sedimentation/X-ray, laser diffraction and BET, i.e. specific techniques to determine the specific surface area of copper and gold ore concentrates. The statistical method of minimum squares was used to achieve practical correlation equations among them. Regarding these two ores, if one knows a specific surface area value using one of the methods above, one can predict the result of the others. Diminution of the reagent consumption was so controlled and it could be even decreased by using inert gas.

Petroleum production in the Rocky Mountain district during 1929 registered a small decline from that of the previous year, conforming with a gradual decrease in the amount of oil produced during the last few years. A number of causes may be mentioned to account for this result, chiefly overproduction in other regions and the apparent desire of operators in this territory to conform to the policy of proration and retrenchment adopted by special agreement among operators in many of the fields. Unit operation has been adopted to control oil production from the Sundance sands in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, in line with the general effort to stabilize this phase of the industry and prevent excessive drilling of new wells. Another factor which greatly retarded development in the Rocky Mountain region was the executive order of President Hoover issued in March refusing the award of new prospecting permits to future applicants and threatening cancellation of all existing permits upon which actual drilling had not been done as specified by law. Only four states in the Rocky Mountain region are important oil producers. In 1929 Wyoming led with an average daily output of 52,600 bbl., followed by Montana, with 10,730 bbl.; Colorado, with 6500 bbl., and New Mexico with 2700 bbl. daily average. These states bear the following percentage relation to total production in the Rocky Mountain district: Wyoming, 72; Montana, 15; Colorado, 9; New Mexico, 4., (Table 1.) The total average daily production was approximately 73,000 bbl. and the total production of all four states during the year was 26,534,606 bbl. This is 2.7 per cent. of the total oil production of the United States during this period. O presente trabalho busca verificar a viabilidade técnica de utilização de aços com diferentes percentuais de elementos de liga em sua composição química para a fabricação de brocas DIN 338, com e sem revestimento PVD de TiN comparando com aço AISI M2. A caracterização do material foi realizada em conformidade com a norma SEP 1615 e a identificação do tamanho de grão foi realizada pelo método Snyder-Graff. No teste de furação foi utilizada um centro de usinagem vertical 3 eixos. A aderência do filme PVD foi verificada pelo teste de indentação VDI 3198. As variáveis significativas foram o material do substrato, o revestimento da ferramenta, a velocidade de corte e o avanço de corte. As variáveis de resposta analisadas foram o desgaste da ferramenta, o número de furos produzidos, a rugosidade superficial e o diâmetro dos furos. Ao final do trabalho foi possível constatar que o material Z2 ainda não pode ser utilizado como alternativa ao AISI M2 para a fabricação de brocas helicoidais de aço rápido.

What effect does information technology and automation have on streamlining and rethinking the way we do business in the 90's. This paper covers how these areas have been addressed within the Noranda Group of Companies. It reviews how information technology has evolved, the approach, and what effect it has had on a diversified natural resources company in the mining and metals, forest products, and oil and gas industries.

"The use of stirred mill to complement tumbling mills in grinding fine grained minerals is increasingly becoming an attractive processing option. Parameters such as agitation speed, grinding media type and size, feed pulp density, and grinding time were studied in order to elucidate their impact on stirred milling. Test results showed that the parameters have a profound effect on stirred mill efficiency and operating cost. A comparative test with a tumbling ball mill was also made and the specific energies of both mills in fine grinding were analyzed. A difference of over 40% in energy savings particularly when the product size is smaller than 20 µm was obtained with the stirred mill.INTRODUCTIONIn industrial processes where very fine and ultrafine particles are required such as in chemical, ink, food, paint and lacquer, pulp and paper, plastics, pharmaceutical, metallurgical and ceramic industries, the use of stirred mills for grinding is well established. Mineral processing plants are gradually shifting focus to the use of stirred mills for fine grinding and /or regrinding purposes as the target liberation size gets very small. A number of plants processing finely/sparsely disseminated ores are known to have adopted stirred milling technology for their fine grinding needs (Enderle et al., 1997; Harbort et al., 1999; Gao et al., 2000; Davey, 2003 & 2006; Pease et al., 2006).There are different kinds/designs of stirred mills available on the market but, all can be divided into two sub groups namely fluidized and non-fluidized types. The non-fluidized stirred mills consist of Tower mill, Vertimill, Sala agitated mill (SAM), and ANI-Metprotech (SVM). These mills are characterized by their low-speed and the use of fairly coarse grinding media size, 3 – 20 mm. Hence, they are mostly suitable for relatively coarse grinding application. The fluidized type includes the Isamill, Netzsch mill and Stirred mill detritor (SMD). These mills have a characteristic high agitator speed, use fine grinding media size of 0.5 – 5 mm, and are employed in very fine grinding operations. The superior fine grinding capability of stirred mills is attributable to two main process parameters, which are the use of fine grinding media and a high mill speed."

"The Jameson Cell is a type of flotation machine in which air and pulp are brought together in a vertical tube called a downcomer. Within the downcomer the air and pulp are dispersed into a dense foam of fine bubbles, which creates a favourable environment for bubble-particle collision and subsequent collection of hydrophobic particles. The intense collection zone within the downcomer can be considered similar to the zone between the rotor and stator in mechanical flotation cells.Research into the bubble-particle collision and fluid dynamics of mechanical cells rotor-stator zone has been limited by the difficulty of achieving accurate measurements in production sized machines. With the Jameson Cell the downcomer is largely external and separated from the flotation tank, allowing ready access to the primary contacting zone for measurement and analysis.An investigation has been undertaken into the operating characteristics of the downcomer relating to bubble-particle collision. An effective mapping of the downcomer has been made through measurements of void fraction and bubble size taken across cross sections of the downcomer. Analysis of these measurements has provided an interpretation of the variations in the air and fluid dynamics, bubble size and distribution throughout the downcomer chamber."

"The work in the paper introduces a 2-dimensional finite element model for analyzing particular material processing in a roller press. Two basic roller geometries are considered: (a) smooth rolls (used for milling and compaction) and (b) rolls with cavities, commonly used for briquetting. A model is presented that is suitable to analyze material behavior through all stages of the rolling process: feeding zone, nip region, neutral plane and release section. It can predict pressure, shear stress, slip of the material over the roller surface, material velocity field, failure of the compact during release and the course of other important process variables.MODEL, RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSAn associated Gurson model was employed as a constitutive model for the material. The calibration of the model was based on experimental results from an instrumented compaction die. Coulomb friction law was used to describe phenomena on the material/roller surface interface. Powder River Basin sub bituminous coal fines with moisture content 9% was used as a model material.Two finite element models have been set up, one for the briquetting roll and one for the “equivalent” flat roll. Approximately 3200 plain strain continuum elements with reduced integration (CPE4R) were used. Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach in conjunction with judiciously applied remeshing was employed with the commercially-available, dynamic explicit version of ABAQUS finite element code.Comparison of model predictions with experiment shows that there is an agreement in terms of the general trends of experimental values recorded on laboratory roller presses. Gurson model overpredicts stresses at low densities and, as a consequence, overpredicts roll force and roll torque."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two largest oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana. Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years, and although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

Neste trabalho, foram obtidos compósitos poliméricos de Óxido de Grafite (GO) incorporado em Poli(metaclilato de metila) (PMMA). A obtenção do Óxido de Grafite foi realizada pelo método de Hummers modificado. Em seguida foi ainda adicionada uma etapa secundária de tratamento térmico à 1000ºC no GO obtido a fim de expandir as lamelas de grafite e remover os grupos funcionais aderidos durante o ataque ácido do grafite. As cargas obtidas foram caracterizadas com o auxílio das técnicas de Difração de Raios-X (DRX), constatando a expansão das folhas após o tratamento térmico. O estudo comparativo dos compósitos de matriz polimérica com 3 % de concentração de GO antes e após o tratamento térmico foi realizado com o objetivo de entender a contribuição nas propriedades reológicas do polímero com a adição da carga de GO. Os resultados reológicos apresentaram um aumento da viscosidade complexa tanto no ensaio de Varredura de Tempo, quanto no Cisalhamento Oscilatório de Pequenas Amplitudes (COPA).

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on multiple-seam mining has resulted in two new ground control products. Information Circular (IC) 9495 In some U.S. coalfields, particularly in central Appalachia and the West, most mines are operating above and/or beneath previously mined seams. The effects of multiple-seam interactions can include roof falls, rib spalling, and floor heave. These can seriously threaten the safety of miners and disrupt mining operations. Information Circular (IC) 9495 is a proceedings document containing a variety of papers that summarize recent knowledge about multiple-seam mining. A NIOSH study that analyzed case histories collected from 44 U.S. coal mines is described in detail. The study confirmed that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, and isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries. The study's results were the basis for the Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS) software package. The proceedings also contain two papers describing the LaModel family of software. The original three-dimensional version of LaModel is essential for detailed analyses of complex multiple-seam scenarios. LaM2D implements a simplified, two-dimensional model suitable for quick approximations of the multiple-seam stresses and strains. Three papers in the proceedings focus on case histories. One describes the extensive multiple-seam experience at the Harris No. 1 Mine in West Virginia, a second contains examples of "extreme" multiple-seam mining from the central Appalachian coalfields, and a third describes interactions with regard to longwall mine experiences in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Utah. The final paper reports on a numerical modeling study that provided some insight into the mechanics of multiple-seam mining. [ ] AMSS Software Package NIOSH has developed a simple, user-friendly computer program called Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS). AMSS can help mine planners to evaluate each potential multiple-seam interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS begins by evaluating the pillar design. The treatment plant at Martha Mine was upgraded from a nominal throughput of 110tph (O.93mtpa) to 150tph (1.25mtpa) late 1999. Post-upgrade performance did not meet expectations when treating either the competent primary ore or the clay-rich oxide ore.   ò Plant throughput is constrained by milling capacity when treating the competent primary ore. This is not an issue at present as current plant feed is oxide ore from the top of the open-pit, but will become so in future years as the pit deepens. To counter this future threat, ball mill power has been restored to 1100kW through modifications to the drive train. The addition of a crushing circuit may also be necessary.   ò Plant throughput was originally constrained by thickener and leach/adsorption tank issues when treating the oxide are. Changes to plant equipment and operations has seen the removal of these constraints and throughput on this material is no longer a problem.   The most significant issue facing plant staff at present is the high silver grade and its impact on gold recovery. These high grades impact upon recovery through losses caused by insufficient leach and adsorption capacity. To counter this, the geology, mining, and milling teams are working together to blend the high grade silver zones with lower grade ores - this is seen to be the quickest and most cost effective way to deal with the issue. The plant design has also been evaluated with a view to modifying it to cope with the higher silver grades. The viability of these modifications will depend on cost and time (that is, the length of time to implement any modifications versus the length of time to mine out the high silver zones).

In an effort to reduce the risks to underground miners of health hazards associated with exposure to high concentrations of diesel particulate matter(dpm), the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA) published proposed rules in 1998 limiting dpm exposure in both underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines. The proposed rule for underground coal mines would require removal of 95% of dpm by mass, while the rule for metal and nonmetal mines would eventually limit total carbon exposure from dpm to 160 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift. The comment period for both proposed standards ended on July 26, 1999.In this session, representatives from MSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), equipment manufacturers, labor and industry will discuss the impact of the proposed regulations on mine operations and worker health. Questions will be taken from the audience after brief presentations from each panelist. This paper provides a compilation of written summaries of each panelist’s opening presentation.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are regarded as environmentally friendly light sources due to their high energy efficiency and lack of mercury content. LEDs are used for a variety of domestic and commercial lighting systems, where they are replacing incandescent and fluorescent lamps at a rapid rate. Incandescent lamps inefficiently consume energy because electricity is mostly converted to heat rather than light. This causes unnecessary environmental impacts and energy consumption associated with power generation and transmission from a life cycle perspective. Although fluorescent lamps are more energy-efficient than incandescent lamps, their disposal at end-of-life presents special challenges because of the presence of toxic mercury. Despite the seemingly apparent advantages of LED, very few studies have rigorously addressed potential environmental consequences of their disposal. Specifically, LEDs are designed with III-V semiconductors that presumably consist of toxic and rare materials, including arsenic, gallium, and indium. We hypothesize that, depending on their concentrations and leachability, these constituents may also contribute to render LEDs as hazardous waste at the end of their useful life.
