"The autoclave noble metal desorption in apparatuses with a dense stationary sorbent layer is perspective for the technology of sorption gold and silver extraction from solutions and pulps by carbon sorbents. The study of the mechanism and optimization of the autoclave desorption process involve some difficulties. To overcome them it is necessary to use mathematical and quantum-chemical modelling. The given paper deals with a mathematical model for the dynamics of gold and silver desorption from active carbons by alkali solutions based on the physical-chemical notions of the process. The kinetics and the mechanism of the process were investigated using the mathematical model for gold and silver desorption.The calculation of the efficient mass-transfer coefficient (ße) for various initial and intermediate noble metal concentrations in carbon (Cy) made it possible to find that the dependence of ße on Cy in case of gold desoprtion shows a clear extreme character. The value of the initial metal concentration in carbon therewith does not influence the character of the curve the inflection point of which is changed essentially at elevated process temperatures only. The revealed characteristic property, in the author's opinion can only be indicative of the change in the mechanism of gold desorption under autoclave desorption conditions. The assumed [Au(CN)(OH)]- type intermediate that has a higher diffusion coefficient in comparison with the adsorbed complex [Au(CN)2]- can be considered as an intermediate compound in the process of gold desorption."

OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. "Copper–cobalt extraction is a reagent-intensive process resulting in acid consumption greatly contributing towards production costs, which in the current market conditions curtail profitability. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have become an attractive approach in the mining and minerals industry for product concentration and reagent recovery based on the ability of the membrane to separate monovalent ions from divalent ions. NF membranes can selectively separate acids from metals and salts allowing acid to be recycled as well as the concentration and purification of product streams. Membrane technology in the field of copper–cobalt processing focusses on the concentration of Cu2+ and Co2+ in the pregnant leach solution, recovery of acid from waste streams to neutralization, recovery of valuable metals from waste ponds and process water recovery. This paper aims to provide insight into the potential applications of NF membranes in copper–cobalt processing circuits as well as a brief overview of the effects of process conditions on membrane performance and process development. INTRODUCTION The copper–cobalt industry commonly uses inorganic acids, such as sulfuric acid, in large quantities for primary leaching of copper–cobalt oxide ores and releaching during product purification (Stuurman et al., 2014). This results in numerous acidic intermediate streams containing high metal concentrations and acidic waste streams with low metal concentrations. Acid consumption typically accounts for 10–15% of the operating costs of mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia (Acid Plant Database, 2015). Due to remote mine locations, poorly maintained roads and cross-border conflict, the cost of sulphuric acid can range between USD 300 and 400 per ton. The pivotal role of acid in the copper–cobalt extraction process has driven many mines to build sulphuric acid plants on site to ensure a reliable acid supply, however elemental sulphur still needs to be imported which faces similar logistical challenges and contributes towards operating costs."

"MMG (Minerals and Metals Group) operates the LXML Sepon’s mineral processing facility located 40 kilometers north of the town of Sepon, in the Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The Sepon copper plant produces 70,000 tons/year of LME grade A copper cathode using leachautoclave- SX/EW-flotation technology (Baxter et al., 2003). Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid and soluble ferric ion for the leach circuit. Low pyrite recovery has been an on-going challenge in the flotation circuit. Final tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute (Bassell et al., 2006) showed that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines.In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-MMG technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt and was unavailable for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the low pH (< 1), high dissolved metal ion environment and will not complex with metal ions in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which was subsequently followed by on-plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.INTRODUCTIONLow pyrite recovery has been an ongoing problem in the flotation circuit at Sepon. Sulfur recovery (indirect measure of pyrite) was improved from 40% to 65%-75% in mid-2005 when on site laboratory work confirmed that AERO® 8045 Promoter was a more effective collector then AERO® 407 Promoter. However, sulfur recoveries above 65% could never be achieved. Sepon requested the Ian Wark Research Institute to complete a surface analysis study using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to determine if clay coated pyrite played a role. It was concluded that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse (+ 100µm) liberated particles and finer (-74µm) particles that have been coated by clay fines. The majority of the losses appear to be due to the former. In December of 2005, a series of diagnostic tests were performed in Stamford using synthetic plant water in order to identify what chemistries would likely be robust in the slimy low pH and high dissolved metal ion solution environment. Results showed that several chemistries would not complex with ferric, ferrous or copper in solution and therefore should perform well in the Sepon flotation. The incumbent collector, AERO® 8045 Promoter was complexing with metal ions in solution. This resulted in the collector not being available for adsorption onto pyrite."

While Russia continues to be a worldwide leader in asbestos production, the environmental and health status around Russian asbestos mines is not well known and understood, internationally. A literature review was performed to evaluate the potential impact of Russian mining operations on mesothelioma incidence rates in the Ural region where the majority of the asbestos deposits are located. Asbestos that has been mined in this region includes chrysotile, crocidolite, and anthophyllite forms. The Nicholson-Peto (1986) model was applied to published exposure data and mesothelioma mortality statistics in different cities and villages of the Ural region to estimate mesothelioma potency factors (KM) for the various associated fiber types. It was demonstrated that mesothelioma potency factors, as determined by Berman and Crump (2008), could be used to predict mesothelioma risks of non-occupationally exposed individuals in locations where either pure chrysotile, or both crocidolite and chrysotile, are mined and milled. A mesothelioma potency factor was calculated for anthophyllite that appeared to be higher than expected based on previously published studies. The highest incidence of mesothelioma was identified in a community close to a crocidolite mine. The study confirms the validity of utilizing current risk models for non-occupationally exposed populations near asbestos mining activities where asbestos exposures are relatively low and provides methods of characterizing mesothelioma risk in the former Soviet republics (FSRs).

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

"The profitability of mining and metallurgical operations continues to lag behind that of other industries despite the technical advances that have occurred in recent years. A primary reason for poor performing in this economic sector is the lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information. The mine cut-off grade can be optimized if mining and metallurgical engineers have the data to optimize milling for the type of ore in hand.Integration of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays is the key to determining the economics for each blast strategy in a mining site. Real-time information from manufacturing assets greatly affects the profitability and flexibility of a company, but gross errors from faulty sensors, inaccurate instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt actionable information. New software tools can model the process, sift through available data to identify and eliminate gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to create materially balanced and consistent readings. The reconciled data is unified for use by both monitoring and decision making processes.Creating a real-time information environment where upgrade and change are allowed is becoming an accepted methodology to accelerate and simplify the integration of applications such as production monitoring, equipment performance management and yield and inventory management."

"The use of High Pressure Grinding Rolls is gaining significant interest as a replacement for SAG milling in the comminution of hard rock ores because of the potential for reduced costs in terms of energy and grinding ball consumption. Estimation of expected energy consumption for fullscale operations has conventionally involved the testing of a few fairly large samples in pilot scale HPGRs. This paper describes the development of a small-scale batch test method for determining a work index for HPGR of a large number of samples that can be used to show the variability of the ore as an integral part of a geometallurgical approach to circuit design and production forecasting.The test equipment that was developed comprises a hydraulic press with adjustable pressure operating on small batches of ore in a locked cycle test procedure. A work index measurement was determined that links the specific energy consumed in the test to the breakage achieved such that the index can be used to predict comminution energy requirements.The measurements were calibrated against laboratory scale HPGR equipment to develop a model for design and forecasting that includes crushers, HPGRs and ball mills in a complete comminution circuit.INTRODUCTIONEstimation of the expected energy consumption for full-scale HPGR operations has conventionally involved the testing of a few fairly large samples in laboratory and pilot scale machines (Danilkewich, 2006). With the financial input of five mining corporations, SGS Lakefield Research has developed a small scale test capable of providing relevant information on the variability of energy consumption and size reduction from drill core samples. It is our intention that the values measured in the test will be scaled up, through benchmark comparison with pilot sized and full sized HPGR units, to allow plant design and throughput forecast on a block by block basis of the mine plan using a new CEET program. CEET® (an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool) is an advanced grinding design and performance predicting tool that uses energy relationships to model the performance of SAG / Ball mill circuits."

The Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) project will extend commuter and future statewide high-speed rail service into the Transbay Transit Center, which will be located in the business district in downtown San Francisco. The DTX project includes 1.5 miles of underground construction, comprising complex sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. As part of the DTX preliminary engineering process, development of appropriate contracting practices, including contract packaging, procurement methods and contract terms for the underground construction, has been initiated. This paper provides a summary of the evaluations undertaken, preliminary conclusions reached, and proposed next steps to promote industry interest and maximize bid competition.

One of the basic processes of process engineering is the production of dense suspensions. The major two equipment of this task are the periodically operating propeller mixer, and the continuously operating mixer tank based on the flow principle. In the laboratory of the Department of Process Engineering at the University of Miskolc, laboratory scale experimental setups had been built of both types of mixers in the frame of the FKFP 0504/1999 signed research project, supported by the Hungarian Ministry of Education. By these experimental setups many systematical experimental series had been carried out by test materials of water as the dispersing media and sand, power plant fly ash and magnetite as the granular solids. On the basis of the literature and these experimental investigations, scale-up methods had been developed for both types of mixers for the determination of the main technical parameters of industrial size equipment.

This circular deals primarily with the various methods of longwall mining used in some mines in certain districts of the Middle Western States. In some instances underground methods were considered comprehensively, and in others only the actual methods of mining and face advance were noted. Results obtained by the mines in output per man were compared only on the basis of an operating day, since idle time and number of men employed would not, be comparable due to the great difference between mines in different districts. Man-hours per ton per operating day are noted in a general way. Material and power costs are not included. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this paper was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the presidents and other officials of the comparnies operating the mines described. "The Institute of Applied Geology, Manila, Philippines, is jointly sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippines Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund). It provides, in its fourth year of operation, an interesting example of international cooperation in mineral development. Objectives include: (1) the training of mining engineers in modern techniques of mineral exploration; (2) assisting government and industry in discovering new ore deposits; and (3) providing the basis for the establishment of an economically oriented graduate school of geology at the University, the first of its kind in the country. Training of engineers requires roughly one full year, which is divided between academic study and actual field practice. Lecture and laboratory instruction include courses at university level designed specifically to up-grade those aspects of the geological sciences that are required by mining engineers now qualifying as mineral exploration engineers-economic geology, applied geochemistry, geo-physical exploration, petrology and structural geology. The field training involves direct participation in actual mineral exploration projects arranged with the co-operation of the Bureau of Mines and private interests engaged in mineral development and production. The system works well in practice, and the Institute staff and trainees were responsible for outlining new evidence of economic mineralization. It is also apparent from the application of the exploration methods available to the project -geological mapping, air photo interpretation, magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, self potential and gravity surveying as well as geochemical prospecting -that, under the humid, tropical, mountainous conditions in which the practical program was conducted, air-supported geochemical prospecting with attendant reconnaissance geological mapping affords the most economical and effective approach to mineral exploration for at least some of the deposits characteristic of the region."

Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

I. HISTORICAL. BARITE has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State-namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties:, Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties-Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell-but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

"Mine decommissioning is the final phase in a mining project. Planning for decommissioning must commence for a proposed mine even before the government approves it. Queensland mining approvals require proponents to commit to completion (or closure) criteria defining successful rehabilitation. Queensland mining project statutory environmental authorities must also specify how progressive rehabilitation is to occur throughout the mining project. Final landforms with graded banks together with creek and run-off diversions are often required and constructed early in the life of a mining project. At closure, mining projects must demonstrate that future medium-term risks are not significant, or failing this, a residual risk financial payment must be made to the state. CSIRO climate change projections indicate that Queensland is likely to become warmer this century with less rainfall in parts and with extreme rainfall events likely to occur more frequently. This project was undertaken to?determine: if current rehabilitation planning tools assist in determining the environmental risks from mining closure not adequately addressing climate change if these risks are addressed by current rehabilitation outcomes.The north-west Queensland mining region and the central Queensland coalfields were represented in this project by five study sites. Local data sets for temperature, rainfall and rainfall intensity were produced using conservative greenhouse gas emission scenarios representing likely future atmospheres, and using the SimCLIM climate model, Evaporation data sets were also derived from available climate parameters. These projected climate variables supported equations and models used in Queensland to determine mining project rehabilitation completion criteria. Storm intensities and return intervals were directly applied to assess the likelihood of failure of engineered structures such as stormwater diversions and banks. Plant cover change determined by an existing growth model together with rainfall intensity and changes in the R and C factors of the universal soil loss equation (USLE) erosion model enabled estimates of long-term erosion rates. Flood estimates were undertaken using regional rated catchments.The study found that stormwater diversions and banks on recontoured rehabilitated landforms, if constructed to currently accepted completion criteria, would likely fail within 30 years and with the likelihood of failure steadily increasing thereafter. The change in likelihood of failure was able to be estimated and could be applied to the determination of residual environmental risk for approval of a surrender application involving rehabilitation. The USLE model showed that long-term erosion rates increased as a consequence of climate change from north to south across the Queensland mining precincts. Because the growth model did not consider carbon dioxide fertilisation affects, results would likely be worse-case.Likely climate change outcomes have consequential residual environmental risks of mining project rehabilitation failure. This increased risk may result in increased payments to the state from mining projects where high consequences exist. The liability to the state and risk to the environment can be avoided if today’s completion criteria address tomorrow’s climate change impacts.CITATION:Evans, M C, 2014. Mabey Inc. is providing for the shoring design for the Naples bay Center project, located in Naples, FL. The excavation is approximately 374' long by 164' wide and is 27'-8" deep at the shoring line with a groundwater level six feet below present grade. The project Excavation is for a multi-use facility for residential and retail with underground parking. The shoring design will be incorporated into the foundation walls for the building. Mabey is using its pre-engineered Super Powerbrace Plus (SPP) wales and Mega Struts to support the excavation in two phases. The system design and the design of all the pre-engineered components are by Mabey. The foundation is supported on drilled shafts arranged with the building column grid. The excavation will be completed in two phases to allow for equipment mobilization and operation on a site with limited access. The construction sequence will begin with placement of the drilled shafts. The drilled shafts will also serve as the building columns. After the drilled shafts have cured, 630 AZ24-700 x 45 ft. long sheet piles will be installed. The sheets will be arranged in two phases, divided by a center row of piles. Since de-watering in south Florida is very expensive and often downright impossible prior to placing the seal slab, all the initial foundation and excavation bracing work will be completed with groundwater in situ. The entire excavation will be excavated to 5 ft. below ground surface to allow for the installation of the wale support brackets at 12 ft. on center, welded to the sheet piles. After the support brackets are installed, the SPP hydraulic wales and the Mega Strut hydraulic braces may be installed for both phases. Once the frames and struts are in place, Phase 1 excavation is completed, followed by Phase 2 excavation. The 4-ft. thick seal slab is then placed and cured in the wet. De-watering is now possible with the seal slab in place. Once the excavation is de-watered the leveling slab is placed and cured. The center row of sheet piles is then cut off at the top of leveling slab. With the leveling slab cured, the sheet piles have enough strength to support the excavation without the frames and struts near the ground surface. The permanent sheet piles are then seal welded for water proofing and the foundation walls are cast with the sheet piles. The design is modelled in 3D using REVIT to ensure accuracy of the design. The earth pressures are developed using Coulomb theory as there is a top frame and the frame and sheet pile are flexible and move to develop an active pressure wedge. Earth pressure uniform loads and loads from predicted surcharge are modeled in STAAD to determine load effects on the SPP frames and Mega Struts. Coulomb theory and Mabey’s structural model will be tested through monitoring with Mabey’s LIVEPin system. LIVEPin will be placed in struts for each phase of construction. The LIVEPin results will be calibrated with the structural model to determine actual frames forces and will also determine the actual earth pressures applied to the system from surrounding soil. Mabey has used the LIVEPin system in similar applications and this has helped us determine modelling accuracy.

Numerous features should be incorporated in any efficient , well - developed safety plan ; in addition to first -aid training safety work , to be reasonably effective , should include the establishment and maintenance of a safety organization , safety competitions between mines or sections of mines , safety- inspection committees , accident - investigation committees , safety meetings of mine officials , safety bulletins and posters , employees ' safety publications , Holmes Safety Chapters (which provide for monthly safety meetings of all employees ) , and numerous other activities looking to safe operation of mine or plant . These features are supplementary to the fundamentals of safety-- adequate and effective supervision and discipline . Years of experience , however , have demonstrated that first - aid training is a good accident -prevention auxiliary and should be made an integral part of every company's safety program . Many safety-organization plans have failed because they have been based upon the assumption that the supervisory force should be given full authority and responsibility for achieving safety and eliminating accidents and that the workers , who are most vitally concerned , are nonessential . First -aid training causes the employees to feel that they have a personal and full participation in the safety program and is now available so readily that no individual or organization has any valid excuse for not having it . Early investigations made with a view to bettering health and safety conditions among the employees in the mineral industries demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured employees because , under the difficulties inherent in the occupation , seemingly unimportant wounds , when not treated promptly, became infected and caused permanent disability and even death . Many seriously injured persons , brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers who were ignorant of the approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation

"The separation of raw materials in the separator with ferromagnetic liquid occurs due to differences in magnetic and gravitational properties of respective components in relation to each other and to the liquid. In the separator with wedge-shaped pole shoes and the working space axis inclined at a certain angle to the horizontal direction, the paths of grain movement at fixed separation conditions depend on its physical properties. Due to this, the levels of grains outlet from the separator working space are differentiated according to differences in their physical properties. The distance between the levels of outlets from the separator working chamber depends on magnetization of the liquid which is proportional to the liquid density, on the magnetic field intensity and the inclination angle of the separator working passage to the horizontal axis. The separation accuracy is higher the larger is the distance between the outlet levels.The paper will present the methods of visual observation and recording of movement paths of coal grains of different physical properties in the paramagnetic liquid which was the water solution of manganese chloride. The paths were recorded with a video camera in the working chamber by means of a specially constructed device, acting as a periscope, which were then transformed into digital images. Experimental movement paths were confronted to the paths obtained in a theoretical way by means of solving differential equations of movement by a numerical method, achieving good compatibility of experimental and theoretical results. The equations of movement were solved with taking into consideration the drag force, expressed by formula for laminar and dynamic conditions of motion.The course of the path of grain movement depends on grain and liquid physical properties, magnetic field intensity and inclination angle of the working space to the horizontal direction. The two latter parameters can continuously control the process of separation."
