Processos de fundição de ligas de alumínio com altos teores de Mg são um desafio da indústria, uma vez que diferentes taxas de resfriamento ocorrem em geometrias diversas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a liga de alumínio AA5052 com variações em teores de Mg por meio de experimentos de solidificação direcional transitória, e compreender seus efeitos com relação a evolução de parâmetros térmicos, microestruturais, e propriedade mecânica. As leis experimentais de evolução do espaçamento dendrítico primário (?1) com relação a taxa de resfriamento resultam em: ?_1=640 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_1=300 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga com 3,2%Mg. As leis de crescimento de espaçamento dendrítico secundário (?2) com relação a velocidade de solidificação resultaram em: ?_2=27 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_2=15 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para as ligas com 2,6%Mg e 3,2%Mg. Maiores teores de Mg na liga AA5052 proporcionaram uma expressiva redução no valor de ?2 para uma determinada VL. A evolução da dureza mostrou-se diretamente relacionada ao tamanho e a distribuição dos intermetálicos presentes, sendo ?2 o fator predominante neste controle.

Detailed descriptions by operating area of the Kidd copper smelter are presented, together with accounts of complement staffing, training, and preparation activities for smelter start-up in June 1981. Concentrate tonnages smelted in the first twelve months of operation were constrained by the capacity of the furnace off-gas system. However, modifications designed and introduced over that period, plus sustained efforts by operations and maintenance personnel have resulted in stepwise improvements in smelter performance.. Consistent operation at design feed rates has been well demonstrated over the third and fourth smelter campaigns and efforts continue on further improving the continuous smelter on-line times and increasing campaign life. In November 1982., following a seventeen month preproduction period, the Kidd smelter attained full operating status.

Whether you buy your minicomputer from a manufacturer or another vendor, the first thing you must do is define your needs. With good planning, the initial cost will be low and your return on investment will be maximized over the long term. Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

We report the studies of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM FC) and hydrogen storage materials at McMaster University for the last 14 years. From the initial investigation of ionic conduction mechanism to the revelation of the origin of non-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as well as the synthesis and characterization of high temperature polymer electrolytes, both experimental and theoretical works have been compiled for the fuel cell membranes. In addition to the discovery of suppressed ionic conduction in Electrode-Membrane Assembly (EMA) and novel hydrocarbon PEMs based on micro-emulsion, the first evidence of hydrogen adsorption saturation by carbon nano-tubes was also achieved, which has been the bottleneck for the application of PEM FC. Prior to our study, a number of controversial publications have claimed the hydrogen capacity of these materials to be between 0.1 to 10.0 wt.%, and none demonstrated a plateau of adsorption with pressure that is consistent with monolayer saturation. Others suggested that the tube bundle structure is opened under high pressure to enable higher adsorption on newly uncovered surfaces, but received no confirmation. Using our home made high-pressure instrument with in-situ electrical probes, we found that a plateau is nearly achieved at about 300 atm in the room temperature isotherm, and that nanotube bundles actually compress with pressure instead of splitting, using in-situ electrical measurements.

Modern shaft kilns in Europe are fully mechanized and burn cement of acceptable quality at 700,000 Btu per bbl and lime at 3.2 million Btu per net ton. Rotary kilns for cement have increased in thermal efficiency by using exit gas heat for preheating incoming raw material and by recovering heat from outgoing clinker in air-quench coolers. The dry process Lepol or ACL kiln has the lowest fuel consumption, 580,000 to 630,000 Btu per bbl, and very low dust loss, about 1 pct weight of clinker. The Holdebank-Gygi system reaches 720,000 Btu per bbl. The calcinator kiln for the wet process consumes 1.1 million Btu per bbl. IN every country economic circumstances prescribe the method used to produce a commodity at lowest cost. In Pennsvlvania a man's wages for working 4 hr buys a ton of coal wholesale; in Germany a laborer must work 40 hr, or ten times as long. In western Europe, therefore, conservation of fuel is of primary importance, and recent practices of burning lime and cement differ from those employed in the United States. LIMESTONE surpasses any other rock or mineral in the number and diversity of its uses and in the quantity consumed fur industrial purposes. Either in the raw state or when calcined to lime it enters directly or indirectly into the manufacture of a great variety of products and its sphere of usefulness is continually expanding. The term "limestone" as here employed includes all varieties from high-calcium limestone, consisting almost entirely of the mineral calcite, to the highly magnesian variety, largely dolomite. Lime is also discussed .because lime is simply calcined limestone and often the material may be used in either the calcined or natural state. PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. THE CHAIRMAN.- This meeting is under the auspices of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and I think the germ of the idea originated in the steel business. Last year there was a meeting of prominent people in the steel industry with the idea of getting together and discussing practical phases of their business, so that everybody could contribute and from that there might be benefit derived for the industry. Several months ago when Mr. Bain was in Salt Lake City, he and Mr. Oldright asked me what I, as an individual, thought of it. From that originated this idea of having the copper people come together to discuss reverberatory smelting and all its phases. In starting out, it seemed the best plan to ask members what particular subjects they wished to discuss first; that is, the ones that would be considered more important. We asked Mr. Oldright, or suggested sometime ago that the meeting be postponed until May because May is a lovely month in Salt Lake. There are a number of attractive features around the city. We have a number of smelters here and I think that probably the most of the benefit will be derived from talking in an informal way and visiting the various plants around. the valley. At any rate, speaking as a resident of Salt Lake, I am glad to see all of you gentlemen here, and hope you have an interesting and instructive time. The tentative list of subjects for discussion at this conference is as follows: Construction Walls, etc. Walls, proper design and thickness of brick for various types of charging. Bottoms, construction of. Binding steel, correct weight and arrangement, where thrust of arch should be taken. Refractory materials, feasibility of using different material in various parts of the furnace. Water jackets, where applicable. Should bricks be used inside of same. THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November. 191(j.) I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION. 1. Historical. ALLUVIAL gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river; by Paulino, a Brazilian convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, Cirubé, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Tat, and Couriége. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysée, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about $5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary between the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company,, the Dutch Guiana French Mining Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have pro-duced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of the production went through French Guiana and

The Minerals Data Source Directory is a compilation of descriptive information on the availability, content, and location of minerals data in the Federal Government. It is intended to assist Government personnel and the general public in locating and acquiring minerals information. Included in the Directory are descriptions of data bases, publications, information systems, and information offices containing data pertaining to ail aspects of mineral production, consumption, trade, and related information. These mineral data sources include the Federal agencies such as the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey whose major mission is the collection and dissemination of mineral information. Also included are agencies such as the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, State, Transportation, and Treasury, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Environ- mental Protection Agency, the Federal Reserve System, the interstate Commerce Commission, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, whose primary mission is the collection of data in nonmineral subject areas, but in which the mineral industry is a component.

The objective of the project descibed in this report was to design and field test a model health and safety program at a coal mining company and a gold mining company. The model program was implemented primarily by providing training on loss control, accident investigation, and the operation of mobile equipment; and by providing technical assistance to help solve health and safety problems. Data were obtained from company records on occupational injuries, illnesses, accidents, and "near misses"; and through direct observation of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs. At the coal mine, employees were observed five times over a 15-month period. At the gold mine, employees were observed six times over a 16-month period. During the study, the percentage of sampled jobs containing one or more safety deficiencies decreased from 74.3 pct to 36.6 pct at the coal mine and from 86.4 pct to 19.1 pct at the gold mine. Work on this project was performed by Woodward Associates, Inc., under a Bureau of Mines contract.

"Variable speed mill popularity has grown during the last 10 years with almost every SAG mill fitted with a variable speed drive. In addition, many of today’s larger ball mills are running a variable speed drive for various reasons. In the past, motor suppliers, especially gearless drive suppliers, have considered mills as being an overpriced rotor. This has lead to mills demanding more torque than what a motor can generate. This paper identifies the reasoning of what has happened and how to mitigate the mismatch in the future. Technical and economical issues are discussed, allowing mill operators to make an informed decision of which path to take in deciding what motor to put on a mill.INTRODUCTIONIt has been generally accepted in the past that motor suppliers and specialists in engineering companies understand the workings of a SAG mill or a ball mill and although there is a fair knowledge within the industry, in regards to mill torque requirements, the advent of variable speed drives in ball mills has shown the writer that a complete understanding of the mill torque requirements are not fully understood.This paper will discuss two aspects of mill torque requirements, (operating torque at various charge levels and start up torque), and how it relates to specifying the proper motor torque requirements.MILL OPERATING TORQUEMill operating torque at a given charge level and density in a mill is essentially constant throughout the entire speed range. For the purpose of this paper, we will take a 38’x 22.5’, 20’ EGL, SAG mill and provide the power draw at variable speeds but fixed loading conditions.The power draw and mill torque of this mill at 8% ball charge and 28% total loading (Highlighted) is shown below as Figure 1, at variable speeds."

Yielding rock bolt support systems have been developed to accommodate ground movement in shifting ground such as in coal operations; in creeping ground such as salt, trona, and potash; and in swelling ground associated with some clays. These systems, designed to remain intact despite ground movement, should enhance mine safety and help contain costs in areas where rebolting of rigid non-yielding systems is typically required. Four such systems were tested in straight tensile pulls in the laboratory. They include the Slip Nut System from Dywidag Systems International USA, Inc., Ischebeck's bolt mounted Titan Load Indicator, Rocky Mountain Bolt Company's Yielding Cable Bolt, and a rock bolt installed variation of the yielding steel post developed by RE/SPEC Inc. The first two systems are currently marketed products and the latter two are prototype systems. Each system responds to load and displacement by yielding in a unique manner. All are designed to yield at predetermined loads. A description of each system and its yield function is provided. Each system was tested over its prescribed yield range in a test machine. At least five tests were performed on each system. Each system yielded and continued to provide support according to its design. Each shows promise for ground control use in shifting or creeping rock. This work helps to illustrate the comparative differences in performance between these specialized systems and the applications where they may be most useful.

"Hatch and ArcelorMittal Mines Canada have combined their expertise to develop a dynamic model of the latter’s Iron Ore Pellet Plant in Quebec, Canada. This model was used to predict the benefits of different expansion projects, as well as asses the best implementation sequence.Two modelling tools were used: a discrete-event simulation software used to develop the dynamic model of the Pellet Plant and an in-house process simulator. The latter was based on operational data and known behavior of the process, and was calibrated with historical data gathered under different operating conditions.The results of the process simulator were used as input values for the dynamic model, which included all of the operation steps of the pelletizing process, from concentrate beneficiation to baking of the pellets. The model has been validated by assessing its capacity to represent adequately the operation of the plant during a 20-month operating period. It was able to reproduce the plant capacity within a precision of 1.2%.Simulated “what-if” scenarios allowed quantifying the production increase associated with the addition of new equipment such as ball mills or balling discs, implemented individually or in combination. Results revealed a potential 10% increase in the annual plant production by adding additional equipment in the two most limiting sectors of the plant, grinding and agglomeration. The simulation results made it possible to quantify the synergistic effect of two projects on plant throughput; the model showed that the combination of two projects resulted in a greater production increase than the sum of the same projects evaluated individually.Now that it has proven reliable, the simulation tool can readily be used by ArcelorMittal Mines Canada process engineers to perform simulations for equipment optimization, and to evaluate the impact of various operating parameters such as equipment availability and tonnage, product mix or concentrate quality. This work showed that a reliable model can be developed based on known parameters in combination with the proper integration of the process knowledge."

T SEEMS almost sheer presumption to attempt' to discuss Russia in its present chaotic political and economic condition, and were it not that at least two certain absolute factors are continuously at work, it would be impossible to' even approach the subject with any degree of intelligence. These are the inborn love of peace of the people and the national character of the cooperative movement. The love of peace inborn in the soul of every Russian, the desire to be left alone and to- live his life among his home village surroundings, is probably one of the two greatest factors that will make the continuance of the present conditions of civil war impossible. One army or the other may sweep up and down the country. but the Russian peasant will: remain in his own village if not literally darken out. This love of peace is evidenced by the fact that there is no country where personal safety is greater than in Russia in normal times. I have traveled in many isolated parts, carrying considerable sums of money and persolial equipment that; in itself, would be a fortune to any peasant, and have never even encountered a condition in which the most wildly imaginative person looking for adventure, 01: trouble, could muster up even a suspicion of fear. This statement applies also to Southern Siberia and Northern Turkestan, which are inhabitated by the nomadic tribes of Khirghese origin.

The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and constructed in 1785. The Capitol is of great historic and architectural significance to not only the Commonwealth of Virginia but to the nation. It is the oldest operating Capitol in the U.S. and required a total restoration/renovation as well as an expansion to continue to remain functional. Site conditions dictated that the expansion (a new visitor center) be placed underground on the south side of the Capitol building, requiring a 40-foot deep excavation approximately 5 feet from the Building. Because of its historic significance, every measure had to be taken to ensure the safety and function of the Capitol during construction. The construction techniques that were used to make the deep excavation and protect the historic Capitol included a tied back concrete slurry wall, jet grouting, compensation grouting, and instrumentation monitoring. This paper describes the history of the Capitol building, the techniques that were employed for construction of the deep excavation, results of the latest movement monitoring, and factors contributing to meeting the restrictive movement goals.
