The structural design of a mine haul road involves the determination of cover thickness requirements above the in-situ or sub-grade material. The specification of these layerworks is a critical component in the overall road design process. Poor design often leads to premature failure of the road, safety is often compromised and productivity and equipment service-life will certainly decrease. Historically, the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) cover-curve design method has been widely applied to the structural design of mine haul roads. More recently, established mechanistic design principles have superceded the CBR approach to haul road design, using a multi-layer model to represent the various road structural layers. The structural design and associated layer thickness requirements are then determined following a maximum strain criterion. This paper develops a case-study evaluation of the CBR cover-curve and mechanistic design methodologies and through a comparative analysis of layerworks and materials, highlights how improved structural design can be achieved mechanistically.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

The United States is rapidly depleting many of its most important minerals and fuels. The first two Annual Reports by the Secretary of the Interior, under the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970, made us acutely aware that the natural resources that enabled this Nation to attain an unprecedented growth in terms of economic well-being, and to set an example of independent strength through the democratic process, are finite. Once they are depleted, large imports will be required. Simultaneously, competition for available supplies, especially of petroleum, is increasing in the expanding European and Japanese industrial communities and in the underdeveloped nations of the world. Even before the crisis of late 1973, the oil-producing nations of the world, principally in the Middle East, but including Canada and Latin America, were recognizing that the worldwide need for crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas could be translated into an unprecedented economic bargaining position. Thus, the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) raised the price of their crude twice during the first 6 months of 1973. By yearend the energy situation had be-come acute, and it seemed probable that regardless of current political developments, the era of cheap energy was over.

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, representatives of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), and members of the mining industry met with other Government and Industry representatives at three seminars held in Pittsburgh, Pa., November 4, 1975; St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 1975; and Denver, Colo., November L1, 1975, to discuss the results of Bureau-sponsored research on coal mine illumination. A critical element of the Transbay Transit Center Program, the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) will extend commuter rail service into downtown San Francisco and accommodate future statewide high-speed rail service. The DTX project includes 1.8 miles of underground construction, comprising significant sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. At the request of stakeholders, an updated cost estimate was prepared early in the project?s preliminary engineering phase. Unsurprisingly, this yielded a cost substantially higher than the available budget. This paper provides a summary of the management processes and planning decisions taken to bring the project back to budget, resulting in a configuration which derives maximum value from available funding and retains maximum flexibility for future system expansion.

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) have conducted an Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) for a 6.2 km, 4-station underground extension of the Spadina Subway from Downsview Station to Steeles Avenue. This Environmental Assessment Study was performed in three phases including routes and general station locations, alignments and station concepts and detailed assessment of the effects of the undertaking. URS Canada Inc. has led the consultant team for this Study. The anticipated total duration of the project is approximately 6 years and its estimated total cost is about $1.4 billion. This paper presents the planning process of the project, the environmental and engineering challenges, and the measures taken to address them.

"The benthic environmental impact experiment addresses environmental impacts at a specific site related to deep-sea mineral resource development. For such a purpose, since 2010 we have carried out essential environmental research at both the BIS and a preservation site. We have acquired several tens multi- or box core samples at 32 sites within the BIS especially between 2011 and 2013, aiming to examine the basic properties of surficial deep-sea sediment as the potential source for deep-water plumes.In this study, we present physical the properties such as water content, shear strength and also geochemical properties such as major elements, rare earth elements (REEs), heavy metal contents at the BIS. Such proxies vary distinctly according to the Facies association. The lithology of all core sediments in the BIS corresponds to both Association Ib (Unit I/Unit II) and Association IIIb (Unit I/Unit III) on the basis of the KORDI classification (KORDI, 2004); Unit I is watery mud and dark grayish brown (10YR4/2) to dark brown (10YR4/3). Unit II is highly bioturbated mud and brownish yellow (10YR6/6). Unit III is very dark brown (10YR3/2) to black (10YR2/1) mud. Physical properties of these sediment types show that Association Ib is distinct from Association IIIb. The vertical profile of water content changed more sharply in Association IIIb probably due to compaction; water contents varied from 230 to 300% in Association Ib and changed from 200 to 250% in Association IIIb. The vertical profiles of shear strength are also quite different between Associations; the profile curve in Association IIb is much more gentle due to bioturbation."

The recycling of metal resources in mining influenced water (MIW) requires a paradigm shift from within the mine water treatment industry. The potential to recover zinc for beneficial use in the micronutrient fertilizer industry was investigated through a survey of zinc micronutrient fertilizer representatives. An application of the findings to a case study of the Argo Tunnel influent MIW was then implemented. It was concluded that the potential to beneficially reuse MIW residuals in fertilizers exists; the current process sequences of treatment will need to be modified if metal recycling is to be prioritized.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

A new minerals engineering education programme is being developed in Australia which aims to provide tertiary institutions with a package of educationally sound, high quality courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals. The programme is jointly funded by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Department of Education Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) and brings together academics from a number of leading Australian universities, each developing modules in their particular area of expertise. The University of Queensland (UQ) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre(JKMRC) are jointly responsible for modules in several areas including comminution, physical separation and circuit design and optimization. Other modules are being developed by the University of South Australia (with the Sir Ian Wark Centre), Curtin University and Murdoch University. The major challenge of the programme is to provide a high standard of education that is accessible to students who may be located at several different institutions and some of whom maybe a long distance from the primary course leader. Rather than taking existing course material and putting it ‘on the web’, the programme aims to improve on past teaching practice through creative pedagogy and the development of interactive multimedia learning resources. Communications technology is used in an unobtrusive way, and the World Wide Web is used to create a flexible, user-friendly learning environment rather than to facilitate delivery of content. This paper describes the instructional design template currently being used and results of early implementation trials with groups of local and remote students.

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. Separations, which form along stratigraphic boundaries in the roofs of potash mines, pose a serious safety concern. If these separations go undetected they can lead to falls of ground. The current method of identifying the location and extent of these separations is through manual scaling (sounding) using an aluminium rod. The potash mining companies would like to have a tool, which could quickly and reliably detect these separations and distinguish between them and clay seams. This paper presents the results of field trials undertaken at various potash mines in Saskatchewan belonging to the member companies of the Saskatchewan Potash Producers Association. A ground penetrating radar instrument from RST called SUSI (stepped frequency, ultra-wideband, synthetic aperture radar instrument) was used. SUSI has the ability of working over various frequency bandwidths. Four mines were chosen for these field trials, covering the different geological characteristics encountered in the Saskatchewan potash mines: Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan?s (PCS) Allan and Lanigan Divisions, Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operations and IMC Potash?s K2 Mine. These field trials indicated that stepped frequency ground penetrating radar technology could be ?tuned? to identify both separations and clay stratigraphy in the softrock, potash mine environment, based on the different spectral responses of the features.

Stimulated by 4 years of continuous economic growth without inflation, demand for energy in the United States reached an alltime high in 1964. Total value of production of goods and services (gross national product--GNP) for the year was $629 billion, an increase of 6.8 percent from 1963. Allowing for price changes based on 1958 dollars, the gain in real terms was 5 percent. In 1964 the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production stood at 132, a rise of 6.2 percent. With the impetus provided by personal income and corporate tax reductions during the year, aggregate wages, profits, and consumption reached record levels. Even the persistent balance of payments problem improved. Against this background the national consumption of commercial energy increased 4.2 percent. Energy needs continued to be met largely from domestic resources with imports, mainly crude petroleum and refined petroleum products, accounting for but 7 percent of the total. Mineral energy resources, namely gas, coal, and petroleum, contributed 96 percent of the input of energy into the economy during the year. The remaining 4 percent came from hydropower and nuclear power.

"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite.Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis. Quantitative methods for the determination of pymlusite and cryptomelane in Groote Eylandt manganese ores have been developed, A large amount of isomorphous substitution may occur in the manganese minerals and a number of minor and trace element associations have been noted. A correlation has been established between the potassium and cryptomelane contents for a wide range of ore types. Anomalous calcium, magnesium, and sodium values occur in samples containing todorokite, and barium is associated with psilomelane. Groote Eylandt lithiophorite appears to contain negligible amounts of lithium (<O· 05 per cent).A relationship between the H20+ and the Al203, K20, and Fe203 contents has been estahlished indicating that much of the combined water content is due to the presence of kaolinite and goethite, and cap be removed by beneficiation of the ore.
