"Lake Shore Gold is engaged in commercial gold production at both the Timmins West and Bell Creek mines, located in Timmins, Ontario. Run of mine ore is processed at the Bell Creek mill which consists of a conventional gold mill flow sheet involving crushing, grinding, gravity concentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) for gold recovery. Since 2009, the operating capacity of the mill has been upgraded from 2000 tpd tonnes per day (tpd) to over 3,000 tpd. The most recent expansion involved the installation of a low aspect ratio SAG mill to replace the secondary crusher. Without operational data on the low aspect mill, combined with a site team that was new to SAG milling, there were many challenges in achieving the target throughput from the circuit. Through the implementation of AwaRE advanced controllers, running in closed loop with PRC fragmentation cameras as well as embedded PARC modules within the Allen Bradley PLC, the site was able to rapidly develop a best operating practise and has been successful in creating a stable and consistent operational environment. This endeavor was split into two phases: the expansion of the back-end (Phase 1) and the front-end (Phase 2) of the mill. Phase 1 of the expansion was completed at the end of 2012 and involved enhancements and capacity addition to the leaching and adsorption circuits, which increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tpd. Phase 2 of the expansion commenced at the end of July 2013 and involved the expansion of the crushing and grinding circuits. The expanded front-end of the mill now has a capacity of 5,500 tpd, and processes ore from both Bell Creek and Timmins West mines. The updated flow-sheet, as shown in Figure 1, illustrates the replacement of the two-stage crushing and ball milling circuit with a single stage crusher and a low aspect ratio SAG mill."

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) study in the Russian Exploration Area at the northern equatorial Mid Atlantic Ridge began after signing the contract with International Seabed Authority in 2012. In order to evaluate the SMS resources in the course of exploration the major and rare metals with economic value should be determined. The evaluation is based on geochemistry and mineralogy and particularly on the type of rare metals occurrence in the SMS. As a case study research of the Semyenov cluster of SMS deposits have been conducted.

The recognition that surface mining need not be viewed as a permanent dedication of the land but rather as a temporary non-renewable use in a series of land uses has caused greater emphasis on the re-use of surface-mined lands. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U.S. have been studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, the Indian Head Mine, which is located in Mercer County, North Dakota, has been studied. The Indian Head Mine is presently operated by The North American Coal Corporation -Western Division and has been in operation since 1917 under various ownership. The status of current reclamation and postmining land use planning was reviewed. In addition, the relationship between mine planning and public planning in an area impacted by energy development was investigated. Finally, key factors affecting site potential realization for western surface mines have been identified.

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. My comments and questions are addressed to Mr. Troughton. It seems to me that the tests were very well tailored to determine long term effects on performance of bearing piles as groundwater pressures rise in the London Basin. This rise is being simulated by means of a groundwater recharge system but it would be informative to have further details of the controls of conditions simulated. Ideally the porewater pressure in Standpipes 1, 2 and 3 should be the same throughout the test. Under test conditions are there not practical dif­ficulties? Recharge Well C2 is a lesser dis­tance from the pile than the other wells. Was the rate of recharge to C2 regulated to a lesser rate than the other three? In my experience the rate of acceptance usually varies from well to well. Under a common feed pressure were mea­sures taken to compensate for this? Since the problem does not only affect London, but also Liverpool, Nottingham, Birmingham and to a lesser extent, Manchester, I question whether an ideal procedure is being used. It is well known that rates of acceptance decrease with time and often recharge wells need to be flushed out at regular intervals. Other pro­cedures may need to be adopted to accurately simulate the effect of groundwater rise, if tests of longer duration are to be considered.

Tensile tests were conducted on pure magnesium and on four commercial alloys over a variety of temperatures and strain rates. The high positive slope of the ductility vs testing temperature curves that is found over a short range of testing temperatures for these materaturerials was shown to result from the fact that the microstructure was not stable at these testing temperatures. Pure magnesium did not display a transition temperature, although its sub-room temperature ductility was low. This poor ductility resulted from a grain boundary weakness. The aluminum-bearing commercial magnesium alloys had a higher ductility than the pure magnesium. ness.Thealuminum-bearingcommercialThese alloys did exhibit a transition temperature and grain boundaries that were stronger than the grain material. Both pure magnesium and the commercial alloys began initiating cracks at strains equal to one half of their fracture strain. MAGNESIUM base alloys' enormous potential as structural materials lies in their high strength to weight ratios. At present, the high strength magnesium base alloys such as AZ-80, which will be discussed later, have about as high a tensile strength to specific gravity ratio as the highest strength wrought aluminum alloy, 75s-T6, and, of course, a much higher strength to weight ratio than structural steel. Further, since the magnesium base alloys develop their high strength to weight ratios with moderate strengths and extremely light weights, the ratio of load carrying capacity to the weight of many structures is relatively higher for the magnesium base alloys than their strength to weight ratios would indicate. This results because judicious increases in section size, such as increasing the depth of bending members or adding reinforcing ribs, can frequently increase the weight of a structure linearly while the strength and stiffness increase as the second or third power of the added weight. Strength and rigidity must be designed into lightweight structures by those techniques which establish multiaxial stress states. Consequently, strong, lightweight structures frequently also possess a greater propensity toward brittle failures. In order to insure against these catastrophic failures, an extra premium must be placed on ductility and toughness in light alloys. Current knowledge of the ductility and toughness behaviors—notched behaviors—of magnesium base alloys is limited.* Most of the magnesium base alloys * The state of present knowledge regarding the effect of testing temperature on mechanical properties has recently been summar-ized by Pritchard.' crystallize in the hexagonal system, so that they are expected to exhibit a tough and ductile to brittle transition temperature. Actually, a transition temperature behavior has been reported for commercially pure magnesium in the literature, but the characteristics of this transition temperatureh uggest that it may not be a transition in the usual meaning, but simply the onset of some thermal softening, a performance much like that which face-centered-cubic lead might exhibit slightly below room temperature. If transition temperatures do exist, such important questions as the manner in which they are affected by internal variables such as chemical composition and grain size, or the effect of external variables such as rate of straining or notch severity have never been investigated. The investigation reported upon herein was undertaken in order to define some of the mechanical behaviors of the magnesium base alloys better, to gain a better understanding of the influence of some of the above listed variables, and particularly to understand their effect on ductility and toughness better. This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

Polaris Operations, a Cominco Ltd. lead-zinc mine, is located on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, at Latitude 75°23' N and Longitude 96°75' w. When the Polaris Mine went into operation in late 1981, it became the world's most northerly base metal mine.The Polaris Concentrator, housed in a unique process barge, is a basic lead-zinc concentrator where flotation is used to produce the lead and zinc concentrates.The paper describes the ""coarse lead"" flotation feature incorporated in the concentrator flowsheet and describes the start-up problems and continuing operation of this circuit.

"The chemistry of electrolyte systems containing iron remains generally poorly understood despite their prevalence in many natural and industrial processes, particularly in hydrometallurgy. These systems are typically challenging to study and model due to their affinity for complex formation and precipitation even at low pH. Recent developments in the hydrometallurgical processing of nickel laterites at Anglo American have called for a deeper understanding of the fundamental chemistry of the Fe2(SO4)3–FeSO4–H2SO4–H2O system. This paper details the development of an internally consistent, Pitzer ion-interaction model of this system, with explicit recognition of important contact ion pairs (CIPs). The primary application of this model is a thermodynamic framework for the interpretation of kinetic processes occurring during iron(III) reduction with SO2. Adopting a rigorous thermodynamic basis for the system chemistry facilitates the formulation of simple rate expressions that are capable of inherently capturing complex effects. While the iron(III) reduction case study remains the focus of this work, the developments have more universal applications and the thermodynamic speciation model can be extended into other systems containing acidic ferric sulfate.INTRODUCTIONIron is present in nearly all hydrometallurgical refining circuits typically as both a necessary and unwanted impurity and needs to be removed and disposed in a safe and efficient manner. This is generally performed by precipitation to form a range of solids such as hematite, goethite or jarosite. Numerous studies in the open literature have focussed on the removal of iron from refractory gold sulfide ore (Berezowsky & Weir, 1989; Berezowsky et al., 1991) and zinc pressure leaching (Buban, 1999; Ismael, 2003), and PGM matte sulfide circuits (Dutrizac & Monhemius, 1986). Moreover, since ferric iron is a strong oxidizing agent, it has been used extensively as a leaching agent for sulfide minerals (Dreisinger, 2006). Given the outlook of challenging economic conditions, declining ore grades and increasing levels of impurities, effective iron management is going to become increasingly critical to all hydrometallurgical processes.Against this background, and considering the widespread importance of acidic iron sulfate systems throughout natural and industrial processes, it is unexpected that the knowledge of the fundamental solution chemistry of these systems contains such significant gaps, particularly at the conditions typically found in hydrometallurgical applications. Existing literature describing the measurement and modelling of solution speciation in these systems have highlighted their significant chemical complexity (Magini & Caminiti, 1977; Magini, 1979; Lee & Tavlarides, 1985; Stipp, 1990; Papangelakis et al., 1994; Gil et al., 1995; Majzlan & Myneni, 2005; Kormanyos et al., 2008; Yue et al., 2014). Partially responsible for the lack of quantitative speciation measurements is the strong tendency of ferric to hydrolyse at even low pH (Flynn, 1984), complicating the laboratory study of such systems. Moreover, the large number of aqueous species that may co-exist simultaneously makes the study of individual species and the modelling of the numerous interactions between these species extremely difficult (Dry & Bryson, 1988; Stipp, 1990; Majzlan & Myeni, 2005; Kobylin et al., 2007)."

Having developed a methodology for estimating mining-induced seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities in 2003, in this paper, the importance of measurements are high-lighted in the study of caving and seismic source mechanisms as applied to mine designs. Geotechnical data is analyzed from four case studies to address cave condition, load transfer, and potential effects on stability and resource recovery in four Utah mines using measurements and observations conducted over the last three decades. Cave conditions are evaluated on the basis of measurements in the gob of a western U.S. operation mining under the massive Castlegate Sandstone and indirectly using the results of measurements and boundary-element modeling at panel boundaries at a mine where strata behave elastically. Together with subsidence measurements and microseismic monitoring, regional caving and load transfer in multiple-panel extractions are addressed while the effectiveness of barrier pillars in reducing stress and seismic response where mining under massive stratigraphic units is analyzed using measurements and three-dimensional computer modeling.

The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, it will show what problems can arise when single estimated values are substituted for a distribution of values when evaluating an open pit mine project in the face of uncertainty. Secondly, it will show how the ability to deal with uncertainty and risk in mine project evaluation can have a significant impact on the ownersÆ and stakeholdersÆ investment decision-making. Here a new mine evaluation framework, the integrated valuation/ optimisation framework (named IVOF), is introduced as an alternative tool for mine project evaluation where uncertainty and risk are incorporated in the evaluation process.

The Bureau of Mines is active in programs pertaining to solid waste disposal and land reclamation. Nine reclamation projects of mining companies and six projects of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were investigated to provide information on the procedures, costs, and results obtained from reclamation projects of bituminous coal-waste disposal areas. Refuse disposal costs of mining companies ranged from 9 to 28 cents per ton-mile, and quantities disposed of ranged from 600 to 4,500 tons per day. Spreading and compacting the refuse at the dump site ranged from 3 to 20 cents per ton. Cost of covering with soil and planting ranged from $750 to $1,646 per acre. Total costs of reclamation for the Pennsylvania projects ranged from about $1,800 to more than $15,000 per acre. Refuse preparation costs ranged from $772 to $5,550 per acre. Soil covering and planting costs ranged from $1,083 to $5,086 per acre. The best results were obtained by soil preparation and conditioning prior to planting. The type and depth of soil and effect of climate were also factors.

At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the United States. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before fi ring to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150 kt (165,000 st) of barite in 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, to add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks and to add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around X-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses accounts for an estimated 78 kt/a (86,000 stpy) in the United States.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are made primarily to provide preliminary information to the Department of Interior agencies and to others concerned with planning the proposed Federal power development within the Missouri River Basin . The present report has been designed to permit public distribution of factual data obtained . The field investigations were made during the late fall of 1947 and the summer of 1948. Information on mineral occurrences in several areas in Sweet Grass County also are included in this report because of their close proximity to Park County . Practically all known metallic mineral deposits within Park County were investigated ; some nonmetallic mineral deposits also were investigated. The investigations of the metallic mineral deposits in Park County cannot be considered complete ; some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been missed . Many of the underground openings , especially at the long inactive properties , no longer are accessible ; consequently , much of the information regarding history their and development necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications .

"Laboratory testing, plant optimization, and the interpretation and application of metallurgical technologies can be tedious, time consuming and costly. This paper outlines the use of proven statistical design of experimentation software for rapid laboratory testing and optimization of operating plants with limited representative sample utilization. This results in less costly required testing, a more thorough understanding of results and the ability to simultaneously optimize several variables and outcomes at once. At the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP), this testing methodology has been used successfully in many metallurgical development and plant optimization projects thereby confirming its real world utility and application. Accordingly, several applied examples in flotation and hydrometallurgy will be outlined in this paper. This will include flotation testing of a copper gold ore, flotation testing of a copper, cobalt and gold ore, optimization of an industrial hydrometallurgical jarosite circuit and optimization of industrial nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching of a copper enargite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONWhile flotation technology is now 100 years old, the testing, interpretation and application of lab results can be tedious, costly and time consuming requiring extensive sample collection and preparation. In addition, recent applications like hydrometallurgical pressure leaching and associated unit operations, such as precipitation, still remain more of an art than a quantifiable science. This paper will elucidate the application of STAT-EASE Design-Expert software to minimize required laboratory testing while rapidly optimizing multiple results and outcomes in a statistically valid manner. The STAT-EASE program is based on proven design of experiment fundamentals. In this paper, the real world application of this methodology for lab testing, plant optimization and process development will be elucidated."

THE present truce in litigation between Western smelting and ranching interests gives opportunity for a summary of the results achieved by metallurgists in condensing fume and de-acidifying furnace-gases. In the absence of complete records of past experiments, there has been a good deal of unnecessary duplication of attempts and' failures. Yet, especially under the recent policy of our large corporations, looking to the economic recovery of the values of by- and waste products, original and, in some cases, effective measures have been developed by American metallurgists. In the case of Bliss vs. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the Montana Supreme Court, recognizing the progressive efforts made to render the flue-gases innocuous, and the value to the community of the smelting company's operations, refused to hamper its work, and returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. In the trial, the experimental firms of the company in the so-called "affected region" were proved to be thriving perfectly, showing that immunity was guaranteed to vegetation and stock by the wide distribution of the sulphurous acid gas in the dry air of Montana. Indeed, L. S. Austin has proved that by the time the fume is 4,000 ft.. distant from the stack, the percentage of sulphurous acid has been diminished from 2.28 to 0.00045; and Angus Smith has shown that rain must contain 40 parts per million of free acid before vegetation is affected. The arsenic in the stack-gases is but a very small part of the original content of the ore, of which 80 per cent. and over is rejected in the concentrator and furnace waste-products or recovered in the flues.
