"THE TITLE I have chosen is certainly not one of those self-explanatory ones. I shall endeavour to make its significance clear during my remarks but, in the hope of minimizing that inevitable exodus which follows a good lunch such as this, I am going to withhold the final key to its meaning until the very last sentence of this talk.Some explanation is due at the beginning, however, so for those of you unfamiliar with Spanish I will explain that casa means house, or home. The casa about which I am going to talk necessitates a wide .and generous interpretation of the word, because I am using it to indicate principally that portion of the North American continent which is the home, in the western hemisphere, of British and American ideals of justice and freedom, the dignity of the individual and his right to exercise private initiative .and engage in private enterprise. In a wider sense, I am including the entire western hemisphere, which may yet stand as the last bulwark of political and industrial democracy.As for the treasures of which I am about to speak, may I remind you that there are no• material treasures but those derived from the earth, and they are derived by one of two processes, -mining and farming. These two fundamental industries are the basis, and the sole material basis, of our welfare, our wealth, our very existence. From farming, whether it be farming of the land. or farming of the sea, we obtain the food to keep us alive, healthy and able to work."

The possibility of diamonds occurring in Canada was first raised by W. H. Hobbs in 1899, who concluded: "that the apex of the fan of diamond distribution probably lies somewhere in the strip of the territory bordering James Bay on the east." This was based on the occurrence of diamonds in surficial sediments at various locations south of the Great Lakes. There are two recorded discoveries of drift diamonds in Ontario: (a) the Peterborough Diamond, 33 carats in size, poorly documented and found sometime before 1920;and (b) the Jarvi Diamond, 0.255 carat, found during 1971 in Sheraton Township near Timmins . Both discoveries were in surficial sediments and their source(s) have not been located. During 1960, Selco Exploration Company Ltd. started a heavy-mineral sample program of river gravels in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario. This was continued by Canadian Rock Company Ltd. (1962-1963) and the Ontario Division of Mines (1973). The surveys discovered the presence of kimberlite minerals in gravel samples from streams draining the Moose River Basin. A total of 53 pyrope grains, four magnesian ilmenites and one grain of chrome diopside were identified from 32 sample locations. A study of the distribution of these minerals suggested the kimberlite source rocks to be located along the north margin or within the Kapuskasing gravity "high" in the area immediately south of James Bay. The Jarvi Diamond, found on an esker east of Timmins, could well have originated from this area. During 1965, an esker was sampled by the Geological Survey of Canada, and the results attracted attention to the area south of Lake Abitibi. At 9 out of 34 sites sampled along the Munro esker, Lee recorded the presence of pyrope garnets and very minor chrome diopside.

Drilling activity in the South Texas area, which includes the South Corpus Christi and Laredo districts, showed a marked decline during 1941 from that of the preceding year. The rate of new discoveries, however, 'compared favorably with exploratory results of 1940 because of the many new productive sands opened in existing fields. South Texas completions for 1941 were about 12.3 per cent below the 1940 figure, compared with an increase of approximately 5.5 per cent in the total number of completions in the United States during 1941 over the 1940 total. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940. Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost more than $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high costs make extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. Operations research techniques are used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate, over 35%, of the total US longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation was used to generate models of transfers under Carving conditions; and the economic feasibility of tine-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure was investigated.

New sedimentological and biostratigraphic data indicate that the Leron Formation in the Markham Suture Zone, Papua New Guinea (PNG) represented Pleist- ocene alluvial fan-delta deposition in shallow marine to lacustrine environments. The distribution of sedimentary regimes in the Leron Formation indicates that during collision zone evolution, various tectono-sedimentary regimes do not always track the movement of the triple-junction systematically as idealized by Crook's (1989a) model. The migration of various tectono-sedimentary regimes are also controlled and influenced by the effects of second-order geometric features of the convergent margins. Leron Formation in the Markham Valley represents late to post-collisional marine to fluvial molasse. Foraminifera indicate that the collision and concomitant suturing of the Markham valley occurred after 1.32Ma.

This paper provides updates to the paper published by the lead author at RETC 2011 with a summary of developments in technologies, products, and approaches to corrosion analyses of gravity sewer tunnels and microtunnels. This paper presents approaches in evaluating degradation of reinforced concrete liners. Also, the carbon footprint of conventional concrete liners and alternative “green” liners are compared and their life cycle costs are considered. A few case histories from the past decade are provided indicating the latest and emerging trends in liner protection.

The long-term supply of nickel to society was assessed with theWORLD7 model for the global nickel cycle, using new estimates of nickel reserves and resources, indicating that the best estimate of the ultimately recoverable resources for nickel is in the range of 650–720 million ton. This is significantly larger than earlier estimates. The extractable amounts were stratified by extraction cost and ore grade in the model, making them extractable only after price increases and cost reductions. The model simulated extraction, supply, ore grades, and market prices. The assessment predicts future scarcity and supply problems after 2100 for nickel. The model reconstructs observed extraction, supply and market prices for the period 1850–2020, and is used to simulate development for the period 2020–2200. The quality of nickel ore has decreased significantly from 1850 to 2020 and will continue to do so in the future according to the simulated predictions from the WORLD7 model. For nickel, extraction rates are suggested to reach their maximum value in 2050, and that most primary nickel resources will have been exhausted by 2130. After 2100, the supply per capita for nickel will decline towards exhaustion if business-as-usual is continuing. This will be manifested as reduced supply and increased prices. The peak year can be delayed by a maximum of 100 years if recycling rates are improved significantly and long before scarcity is visible.

The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. "INTRODUCTION When nations throughout the world are pitted against each other in a war in which petroleum plays a major role, scientist and engineers of the petroleum industry must give serious thought to ways and means for recover¬ing greater percentages of oil from natural reservoirs than in the past. Petroleum and its products are vital to highly mechanized modern warfare, and the victorious nations will be those whose armies, navies, and air forces are supplied with adequate fuel oil, gasoline, and lubricants until the war is won.Efficient recovery of oil from underground reservoirs depends on many interrelated techniques; evaluation of the producing performance of wells upon the basis of their productivity indexes is one such tool. Oil wells usually yield oil at a maximum rate when first ""brought in"". The rate of production begins to decline soon after the first oil is delivered to the tanks, and although part of the decline usually can be attributed to natural reduction of reservoir pressure as oil and as are withdrawn from the reservoir, a larger proportion frequently is caused by greater saturation of water and as in the producing formation about wells and clogging of the pores of the sands by silt, organic salt, and insoluble hydrocarbons. If the maximum quantity of oil is to be recovered from reservoir sands and rocks by wells, it is then imperative that the ability of wells to produce oil be watched closely and all adverse influences that affect the case with which oil can flow to wells be corrected if possible."

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR), a well-established geophysical technique generally used for shallow civil engineering applications, has, in the last decade, found increasing acceptance as a complementary tool in mineral resource evaluations. As new sites are trialled with the method, a greater understanding is being garnered regarding the most suitable environments for long-range radar. Although successful projects have been conducted worldwide for mineral sands, iron ore and alluvial projects – tropical weathering environments have produced some of the most impressive results. Specifically, tropical nickel laterites have shown to be, with some notable exceptions, ideal GPR environments.Such high-resolution remote sensing has particular relevance to bulk commodities or those which possess significant rheological variation within geological units, and has led to some innovative downstream uses within exploration, project development and the larger mining industry. In this paper, we examine the application of long-range GPR in Indonesian nickel laterite deposits in general, to highlight some of these novel applications with particular reference to resource modelling, mine geology and operational economic implications.CITATION:Francke, J, Smith, D and Ramdhani, A, 2014. Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Following his return to the United States and a brief interlude as assistant to the president of the National Steel and Wire Company, he had resumed his mining career, first as timekeeper, then as

In another part of this issue we have reported the results of some test results made upon one of the safety powders. It will pay every c o n t r a c t o r, miner, or user of explosives in any form to carefully re a d the article re f e r red to. Dynamite has done a gre a t work in the service of man, as did black powder before it; but its i n h e rent dangers are admitted by all and are proved by the long list of deaths and injuries, and destruction to property which annually occur through its use. Why should we continue to use an explosive that annually kills and maims hund reds of men, when others are available which are equally powerful, no more expensive and far less liable to accidental discharg e ? Dynamite when first manufacture d is pure and comparatively safe; but most unfortunately it does not always stay pure; it “rots,” and then it is exceedingly dangerous. More than this, the explosive part of dynamite is a liquid, nitro - g l y c e rine, which is absorbed or soaked up by sawdust, wood pulp or the like. So long as this liquid nitro - glycerine remains pure and remains “soaked up,” or absorbed t h e re is little danger. It has been found, however, that the nitro - g l y cerine leaks under certain conditions. During thawing it fre q u e n t l y leaks out of the stick, or if it becomes wet the water causes the n i t ro-glycerine to leak out. In either case free liquid nitro - g l y c e r i n e escapes, and in that free state it may be exploded by any very slight shock. Nor is this all, if a stick of frozen dynamite be bro k e n a c ross it has been found by tests that the frozen nitro - g l y c e r i n e w h e re thus broken is very sensitive to shocks afterward .

"AbstractThe Söderströmstunneln is part of the Citybanan project that is currently under construction in the centre of Stockholm. Main part of the lot Söderströmstunneln is a 300m long immersed tunnel connecting the inner-city islands Södermalm and Riddarholmen. It consists of three tunnel elements that have been immersed in summer 2013. Since the solid bedrock is descending in that area to more then 40m depth, the tunnel elements have been placed and are permanently supported on four pile groups that have been constructed in advance. The common Swedish system of steel core piles has been used to built the pile groups. Drilling and installation of the steel cores piles in free water depth of up to 20m had to be done from a pontoon. The steel core piles are connected with underwater concrete pile caps.IntroductionCitybanan is a new 6km long double track railway tunnel running beneath central Stockholm including two new underground stations Odenplan and Stockholm City. When completed in 2017 commuter trains will have their own tracks through Stockholm, whereas the remaining railway traffic will continue to use the exisiting two tracks (see Fig. 1). This will double the capacity of the railway traffic through Stockholm. The Swedish transport administration Trafikverket is the client for this project. The design and built contract is carried out by the German contractor Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH together with their Swedish subsidiary Züblin Scandinavia AS.As the new Citybanan tunnel is in large parts situated below the bedrock level, it can be executed as rocktunnel in the common drill and blast method. Between the two inner-city islands Södermalm and Riddarholmen the tunnel is crossing the Söderström, an arm of the lake Mälaren. Here the bedrock is descending to a deep valley with more then 40m depth. To connect the rock tunnels between these islands a 300m long immersed concrete tunnel supported on pile foundations is currently under construction."

THE area dealt with in this paper is included within a radius of about 3 miles of the Poimena township. Several thousand tons of tin have been won from this field, and probably £200,000 spent in exploiting it.PREVIOUS LITERATUREThe field has been reported on by Government geologists on four occasions and several ,articles on it have appeared in the mining journals. The work done by Government geologists is summarized below:-"Report on the Blue Tier Tin Mining District and its Tin Deposits", 1886.Speaking of the tin-ore occurrences, this paper states:-"In the primary granite the lodes of tin ore occur, also dykes and belts of more recently obtruded porphyries. The really valuable metalliferous deposits may be classified as follows :-1. Lodes (of which the Lottah mine is typical).2. Dykes- (a) Indurated or hard (as shown by the formations at the Anchor and Cream Creek mines). (b) Soft (eg Hayley's Lease).
