A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960's. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

The installed world steel capacity remains 20% above the present world steel demand. Energy costs have risen enormously in recent years, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The role of the sinter plant is becoming more exacting as it becomes vital to minimize energy consumption. Continuous grate sintering, although pioneered in the United States, has always been the second grade burden preparation route, due to the predominance of easily up- graded ores which were more readily agglomerated by pelletizing. To achieve blast furnace performance up to best world standards, sinter of consistent high quality must be produced with virtually no atmospheric pollution. The plants must be capable of achieving this demanding level of quality whilst utilizing high proportions of revert materials, iron ore concentrates and fluxes . However, with the present difficult economic climate in the iron and steel industry, the economic production of sinter and ultimately steel is becoming increasingly important. The iron and steel industry is looking closely at costs and is identifying the need for sinter plants that will cope with a wide range of sintering materials to give the cheapest blend at varying output levels dependent upon demand. In order to meet these requirements, sinter plant builders are designing plants with particular attention on flexibility.

In some ore grinding circuits it is desirable to make separations purely on size. The normal choice for this is vibrating screen equipment. Developments in screening process technology have led to improvements in the capacity and efficiency of vibrating screens, through the adoption "Thin Layer Wet Screening". This process can reduce recirculating loads and equipment requirements in the ore grinding circuit.

Up to the middle of 19 14, when I had reached what seemed like the advanced age of 30, I had enjoyed far more than my share of success and a lot of minor adventure. But the exciting experiences in distant lands that Soldiers of Fortune had made me long for had not yet materialized. And I had not accomplished the two goals that Mrs. Hughes' geography class at Belmont had set up for me. They were to see In its tropical home the enormous yellow bill of the toucan bird and to ride on a straw "bolsa" on Lake Titicaca. These aims were gratified In the next five years that were the epitome of "romance" in its German connotation of facts seen through the rosy glasses of imagination. Dr. Louis Ricketts was to a large extent responsible for my opportunity. I had been lucky enough to do a lot of work for and with the Doctor, as he was affectionately called by the mining men of the southwest. My association was in connection with his work with John Greenway on the complex metallurgical problems at Ajo. Soon after the Ajo investigation Ricketts had been made chief consultant for the Anaconda Copper Co. When Anaconda decided to undertake a cam- paign of exploration of the west coast of South America Dr. Ricketts thought of me and arranged with Greenway to give me a leave of absence from my Calumet and Arizona job. It took three days in New York in June 1914 to arrange the expedition. Ben Thayer, executive vice president of Anaconda, did most of the planning and I was to report to him. T.H. France, a 45-year-old mining engineer who had been driven out of Mexico by the Madera Revolution, was to accompany and help me. He spoke excellent Spanish and his years of Mexican experience had taught him how to get along with Latin Americans. He went ahead to Bolivia, our first target, to get an idea of the country and the problems. This was lucky as I hardly knew where Bolivia was.

"The excavation of a tunnel in highly weathered and strongly fractured rock masses due to tectonic actions is still a challenge. In order to maintain reasonable productivity, excavation through a wide zone of highly tectonized rock mass requires a detailed, integrated study of the construction solutions and a monitoring system to minimize the process time and to optimize the adopted consolidation measures in accordance with a predefined matrix of possible support systems. This paper summarizes some interesting data acquired during the excavation of the Brenner Railway Base Tunnel system between Italy and Austria. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs through the fault line between the European and the African tectonic plate. This big fault zone is called “Periadriatic Line.” In particular, data acquired in the exploratory-service tunnel have been analyzed. Furthermore, the base concepts for defining the consolidation and support solutions adopted for the excavation of the exploratory tunnel are described. INTRODUCTION The Brenner Railway Base Tunnel (BBT) is a system of underground structures and tunnels that is designed to connect Italy and Austria using new railway standards. It is based on high speed (HS) concepts and applies the European Standards for Interoperability (TSI). The railway includes twin tunnels for a total length of about 55.0 Km without considering the connection tunnels to the existing underground railway in Innsbruck. Including the latter, the total length of the tunnel system reaches 64 Km, and is among the longest tunnels in the world. The Italian section passes through the so-called ""Periadriatic Line,"" which is an important tectonic structure generated by the collision between the European and the African tectonic plates. Despite the extensive investigations carried out (boreholes down to 700 meter depth), significant geological and mechanical uncertainties inside the Periadriatic formations remained unsolved. In order to elevate the level of confidence and observe the behavior of the rock mass at a representative scale, the BBT Authority decided to excavate in advance the service tunnel, which has taken the function of an exploratory tunnel. The data and observations collected during its excavation would provide important insights for the design of the main tunnels."

The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. He had gone on ahead to arrange for our reception Finally a graduate student from Ann Arbor named Steinberg was to go along as Interpreter. We soon found out that if his Russian was no better than his English his interpretlng couldn't be trusted too much I knew nothing about the millions of square miles In Russia and Siberia, and even less about what mineral deposits might be found, but I was delighted at the prospect. In an age where customer service and quality drive today's industry and business, no service or product is exempt from these demands. Industry and business are streamlining everything from people to equipment and today have a heavier reliance on the performance and quality of their assets and equipment, (one of the keys to staying competitive). In the mining process industry, the centrifugal slurry pump is a key piece of equipment that keeps product moving and aids in generating revenue for its owner. The continued improvement and customer success lies in a team effort between the mining industry and the pump manufacturers. We, the pump manufacturers, need to keep improving our designs to further extend the life of our pump with fewer failures and promote to our customers proper maintenance of the pumps to continually keep unexpected failures to a minimum. Strict equipment maintenance, as thoroughly demonstrated by the military, is key to the long life and success of any piece of equipment. In the often harsh duty of the centrifugal slurry pump, maintenance is something that requires "attention to detail". No area of the pump is exempt from attentive maintenance. Here, discussions will focus on the areas of the mechanical drive end, wet end, seals, and extended pump shut down and start up. There has not been a slurry pump designed to maintain or repair itself. So in effect, each pump warrants able bodied maintenance persons to maintain them who continually observe all the rules of safety. Prior to any maintenance discussion or action, the issue of safety should always be addressed. Here, as with everywhere, the same rules apply. Work at a safe pace, note all safety precautions, use associated safety equipment and personal protective attire, observe all tagout and lockout procedures, and most importantly, be aware.

Of these, Transportation and Specifications are of particular importance to market evaluations in the field of industrial minerals. The market researcher, working closely with technical personnel in geology, mining and processing, can determine the technical and economic acceptability of the product to be produced from the prospective property and can often create areas of opportunity for marketing of industrial minerals.

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

As energy requirements in the United States expand with the growth of the Nation, use of coal also can be expected to increase. This optimistic outlook for the coal industry is based on our vast reserves of high quality coals and the possibility of converting coal to end uses other than electricity and metallurgical coke. Potentially, millions of tons of coal might be needed in the form of gas and liquid fuels to supplement our reserves and imports of these natural products. Exactly when they will enter the economy on a large scale depends on many factors. On January 1, 1960, the estimated remaining reserves of coal were 1-1/2 trillion tons, about 50 percent of which is bituminous coal. In 1965, the production of bituminous coal and lignite passed the 500-million-ton mark, emphasizing the steady upward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons, and if the present rate of increase continues within the next five years, output should pass the alltime high of 631 million tons achieved in 1947.

To fully utilize a ventilation simulator as a planning and production tool, the network database must keep pace with mining progress. By using AutoCAD's attribute-definition function, the branch data and node coordinates can be stored as part of the branch-diagram file, and updated with the drawing. Attributes are drawing entities that contain text which can be extracted in a standard spreadsheet format or as an ASCII text file. The data can be subsequently loaded into a ventilation simulator with plotting capabilities, such as VNETPC. This paper presents the methodology for using AutoCAD's attribute feature in a ventilation simulation.

The Regional Copper-Nickel Study was initiated in large part because of fears that copper-nickel development might cause adverse effects on the environment from air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SOZ) emissions from a smelter, and water pollutants such as acid mine drainage. The Study comprehensively examined the potential for ad- verse effects on the environment and possible mitigation measures on both a local and regional scale by first characterizing existing air and water quality, and existing sources of pollution, and then developing hypothetical development scenarios to model potential adverse effects. This paper gives a brief overview of the Study's findings concerning air and water resources.

Minproc Engineers Inc. (Minproc) recently completed the construction and start-up of a process facility to treat 14,000 t/d of gold-silver ore at Kori Kollo, Bolivia. The comminution circuit consists of crushing and SAG-ball mill grinding. Breakage characteristics of the ore were determined and a circuit model developed. This enabled variations of the circuit to be simulated, and evaluated in terms of predicted performance to provide the criteria for final engineering design. Subsequently, analysis of the operating circuit provided data for circuit model-fitting. The validity of the original model and circuit performance predictions are discussed.

A thermal plasma assisted laminar flow reactor has been used to evaluate the kinetics of converting alumina to sodium aluminate in flight. Free energy minimization calculations were used to determine experimental conditions. The experimental variables include: alumina particle size, alumina/sodium nitrate molar ratio, temperature and residence time. A mathematical model for the conversion was developed and validated. Experimental and mathematical results are presented.

"An ore is a rock regardless of its rarity or value."* The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has some impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

This paper describes research and development efforts leading to a wet process for the beneficiation of Western talc ores in which the values are primarily present as soft, platy talc mineral. The mineralogy of the ore, as it relates to the logic of utilizing an uncomplicated, attrition-scrubbing sedimentation process is described. Bench-scale laboratory testwork and a pilot-plant test program are described. The pilot-plant program included production of several tons of products. The thickened talc slurries were very difficult to dewater prior to the drying step. Dewatering difficulties were overcome by use of a high-speed centrifuge. The centrifuge cake was dried either by tray, flash or spray drying. The successful use of one high-grade talc product as titanium dioxide extender in paper is discussed. The talc product has extremely low abrasion values, an important characteristic for minerals used in paper manufacture. It is concluded that this wet process for soft talc ores is capable of producing high-purity talc products for paint, paper, cosmetics and other industrial uses re-quiring very pure soft talc.

The need to move large tonnages of slurry has grown as mines have become larger. As existing tailing depositories are filled up, new mines developed, or environmental requirements dictate, it becomes necessary to transport tailing particularly over longer distances. A typical slurry transport system is shown in Figure 1A. Figures 1B, 1C and 1D show sketches of the system auxilliary components: feed box, receiving sump and drop box, respectively. There are two basic types of slurry transport systems, packed flow and slack flow. Packed flow is typified by a pipe running full; slack flow by a launder or pipe running less than full. Slack flow in launders or channels is also referred to as open channel flow. Generally slack flow slurry transportation involves a flow with less than 65 per cent solids, and there is an upper limit on particle size, depending on the slope of the system.
