Ramifide conveyor transport of the biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is simulated by Petri nets. There are 6 longwalls with accidental output. 12 belts, and 5 transfer bunkers at this mine. It is necessary to coordinate transport links for recon- structed conveyor system. Many tasks were solved by dynamic simulation, such as estimation of transport lateness, influence of transfer bunkers on an unevenness of total coal flow, maximum filling of each bunker, maximum time of main conveyor refusal, co-ordination of unloading for dependent bunkers, choice of main conveyor. The problem of mine-wide conveyor transport animation for dispatcher is formulated in reference to mine "Komsomolets". OBJECT OF SIMULATION The biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is situated on a south part of Kusnetski coal basin (West Siberia). One mines about 20.000 tons of coal out of flat seams by 2.2-4.5 m thickness in a day. There are 6 fully- mechanized longwalls by output 720- 3600 tons in a shift in mine. Coal haulage to surface is carried out by 12 belts having 1.6 - 4.3 km length. For a smoothing over un- evenness of coal flows 5 transfer bunkers to 300 tons were intro- duced. It is generally accepted, that oxygen is a necessary reagent for the flotation of galena with xanthate. Recent measurements have shown (1) that under plant conditions oxygen may be in a short supply to the extent that it limits the rate of flotation. Thus, it becomes important to define the exact role of oxygen and establish a model for the rational design and control of flotation separations, involving oxygen as a reagent. All theories or, the flotation of galena assign oxygen the role of an oxidant. However, they disagree on a number of questions: 1) Is the galena or the xanthate being oxidized? 2) Is a lead dixanthate or dixanthogen the actual collector? 3) Is the oxidation process in which oxygen participates of a chemical or an electrochemical nature? The last question arises from the observation (2) that an anodic bias as well as oxygen will make a galena surface hydrophobic in the presence of xanthate. Theories which are based an the premise that the influence of oxygen is of an electrochemical nature offer elegant models of galena flotation. However, full advantage has not been taken of available electrochemical techniques to discriminate between theories and this is the area towards which this research has been directed (3).

Cortez Gold Mines is located about 75 miles southwest of Elko, NV. Activity in the mining district dates from 1862. The current operation developed from a 1963 joint venture of Webb Resources, The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and American Exploration & Mining Co. Three years later, the USGS discovered gold on the property following a regional geochemical survey. Drilling in 1966 and 1967 identified 3.4 million st of oxide ore grading 0.28 oz Au/st, and a 1700 st/day countercurrent decantation mill was commissioned in 1969. Heap leaching started in 1971 on low grade ore and continues to the present. The mill was shut down in 1976 following exhaustion of known oxide reserves. Mobile equipment was sold and the proceeds committed to local exploration. In 1980, a new plan of operations was developed starting with existing low grade and newly discovered mill ore. The mill resumed operations in 1981 and has been operating to date. A series of metallurgical innovations, culminating in the commissioning of a new fluid bed roaster in the summer of 1990, has enabled treatment of a series of increasingly refractory ores. Current partners in the venture are Kennecott Corporation, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Placer Dome U.S. Inc., manager of the operation. Idaho Mining Corp. holds a 7.5% carried interest.

Rapid industrial growth in India has caused the country to realize the strategic importance of its zinc and lead deposits. Private companies, nationalized in 1965, are now a corporate public sector organization that is making great strides in developing the nation's lead-zinc mining capability. The main mining area is centered around Zawar at Rajasthan. It consists a group of mines - Mochia, Balaria, Zawarmala and Baroi. Mining activities have also been extended by opening the mines at Rajpura-Dariba at Rajasthan, Sargipallie at Orissa and Agnigundala at Andhra Pradesh. A huge deposit has been explored at Agucha in the Bhilwara district but full-scale production has not yet begun. Annual consumption of zinc and lead in India has risen steadily from 25 and 7.9 kt (27,500 and 8700 st), respectively, in 1973-1974 to 162.8 and 80 kt (179,450 and 88,000 st), respectively, in 1989-1990. Mine production has also risen consistently to cope with the increased metal demand. The mining company hopes to increase production at existing mines and upgrade the beneficiation and smelting facilities. Moreover, mining operations may be expanded by opening up new units that are now awaiting governmental clearances. Various modeling techniques are available for describing ore deposits on the computer. Multiple seam coal deposits can be quite successfully modeled by using the variable block modeling method. In essence, this type of model provides an efficient method for storing the relevant data required for calculating ore reserves and for performing the mine planning. The main advantages of the variable block model over other methods for modeling irregular block or tabular deposits are: 1) The amount of data that has to be stored is minimal, i.e., the most efficient use of computer space is made since only the pertinent seam and topographic geometries need to be stored. 2) The computer logic necessary for calculating ore reserves and performing mine sequencing is relatively simple as compared to the logic that would be required for the three-dimensional block model. 3) A variable block model can be created either by starting from raw drill-hole data or by digitizing cross sections that contain the geologic interpretations. 4) Updating individual or multiple blocks can be performed with relative ease. 5) Display of the model is relatively inexpensive and easy to perform. The objective of this chapter is to describe a developed procedure as used in applying the variable block model to a specific multiple seam coal deposit. The general sequence of operations includes: (1) develop the computer model, (2) design the open-pit limits, (3) compute reserves, and (4) develop a long-range mining plan. The programs developed for this application are an expansion of MINTEC's MEDSYSTEM software. It should be noted that this is just one of many possible applications of the developed variable block model.

The use of surfactants as wetting agents to suppress sulfide ore dust has been investigated. Numerous surfactants were examined to determine their characteristics and to investigate their ability to improve the wetting of the sulfide ore dust. However, the surfactants selected as suitable dust suppressors proved to have a negative effect on the flotation of ore contaminated with such reagents. A method was developed to eliminate the detrimental influence of dust-suppressing surfactants. It consisted of surfactant adsorption on activated carbon and separation of loaded carbon prior to flotation. The technique is simple and requires minimal changes in the plant flowsheet.

Longwall coal mining in southern Illinois occurs beneath some of the best agricultural land in the U.S. This region is characterized by highly productive, nearly level, and somewhat poorly drained soils. Subsidence from longwall mining causes changes in surface topography which alters surface and subsurface hydrology. These changes can adversely affect agricultural land by creating wet or ponded areas that can be deleterious to crop production. While most subsided areas show little impact from subsidence, some areas experience total crop failure. Coal companies are required by law to mitigate subsidence damage to cropland. The objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of mitigation in restoring grain yields to their pre-mined levels. The research was conducted on sites selected to represent conventional mitigation techniques on the predominate soils in the area. Corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max.(L.) Merr] yields in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 from mitigated areas were compared to yields from nearby undisturbed areas. There was no significant (a=0.05) difference in soybean yields averaged over the four years. Average corn yields, however, were significantly lower than reference areas. The impact of subsidence and mitigation is variable and site specific. Results were also related to weather. In wet years, yields in mitigated areas tended to be depressed. This research demonstrated that mitigation of subsidence damage can be successful.

Metallurgists are trained to seek synergisms and to optimize trade-offs in the selection of processes and flowsheets. The subject of my paper and the focus of this entire conference is on synergisms involving more than just metallurgical recovery, but encompassing mining and environmental management too. Operators have always known that by recycling tailings water they could recover some cyanide and lime values or reduce the amount of new flotation reagent additions. The trade-offs have changed at many US mines today where concern about avian mortality necessitates that water in the tailings pond be detoxified. This is just one example of how selection of processes and technology today requires integration of environmental management. MUDDER & GOLDSTONE (1989) showed how cyanide can be recovered from tailings slurries by an acidification­volatilization-reabsorption (A VR) process which was installed in New Zealand, and which in 1992 is being commissioned also at Nerco DeLamar Silver Mine as described by OMOFOMA & HAMPDEN (1992). FRICKER (1990) and FRICKER & OWERS (1992) show how using A VR to recover cyanide from pregnant pulps ahead of gold recovery improves the yield of recoverable cyanide while improving the performance of the gold recovery step and detoxifying the tailings. This is an excellent example of the synergisms that can be achieved ,y applying a "systems approach."

The floatability of a bituminous coal in NaG solutions was evaluated using a modified Hallimond tube to delineate the role of the electrostatic interaction between bubbles and particles in determining the coal hydrophobicity. Zeta potential measurements showed that bubbles are negatively charged in the entire pH range tested, while coal particles are positively charged below pH 6.0 and negatively charged above it. Also, both sodium and chloride ions were confirmed to act as indifferent ions without any specific effects for both coal particles and bubbles. Flotation as a function of pH exhibited a maximum and minimum at low salt concentrations which is shown to be determined mainly by the coal hydrophobicity as measured by a new hydrophobic levitation technique. At high salt concentrations (above 0.1 mole/dm3), the flotation without such maximum or minimum is controlled by the electrostatic interaction between the bubble and the particle.

New permit discharge standards instituted at Hecla Limited?s Lucky Friday Mine required installation of water treatment plants to manage water quality at two outfalls to the South Fork of the Coeur d?Alene River. The 002 Outfall Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a clarification-filtration plant for treating the combined mill and underground discharge water flows. Process optimization efforts were a significant challenge until the negative impact the exploration diamond drilling products had on the clarification process was identified and resolved. The products were being wasted directly to the mine water discharge system which was pumped to the surface WTP. Anionic soluble oil and polyacrylamide based products were causing TSS particle hydrophobicity and dispersion that greatly affected coagulation and flocculation response, resulting in excessive chemical usage and treatment control issues. This paper details how problems associated with the drill products negatively impacted the 002 WTP and how system changes, alternative product usage and treatment at the source resulted in more consistent plant performance.

Management of mineral resources through land-use planning procedures is not a new concept, particularly at the local level of government. Colorado may well be one of the first states, however, to vigorously attempt to evaluate on both the state-wide and regional basis, mineral resource potential and to make certain that potential for mineral resources is included as one of the primary factors considered in the local land-use decision-making process. Less than a decade ago the only consideration given to mineral resource extraction, particularly aggregate resources, was whether or not they could be produced at the particular time they were needed. This attitude has now shifted to the other extreme, not only in Colorado, but other states as well, so that other interests, especially housing projects, mountain subdivisions, recreational and wilderness areas are gaining prime consideration in land-use decisions. Ideally, in a more acceptable median position, mineral resource potential would receive definite consideration at the local level.

In 1971, United States Borax & Chemical Corporation (U.S.Borax) initiated a mineral exploration program on federal lands in Southeast Alaska, with the commitment that any possible development would be done with great care for the environment. This program resulted in the discovery of a molybdenum deposit and the location of mining claims in 1974, in an area 45 miles east of Ketchikan, now called the Quartz Hill Molybdenum Project (Figure 1). At the time of this mineral discovery, the area was part of the Tongass National Forest, managed by the Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture, and open to mineral entry and multiple use. In late 1978, the area was designated Misty Fjords National Monument and closed to mineral entry, and in late 1980 the area surrounding Quartz Hill was classified as Wilderness. These new laws and regulations, as well as the special interest environmental groups which oppose resource development, have significantly delayed and increased the costs of developing Quartz Hill.

The title of this paper implies the presence of silver, nickel, and cobalt minerals at, the Alhambra mine. Perhaps this should be amplified to include uranium, as pitchblende also occurs, possibly in mineable quantifies. A brief history of the Alhambra mine is of interest, both from a historical angle and as pointing up the importance of geology in the-present development. The Alhambra is one of several mines in the Bullards Peak or Black Hawk dis¬trict, ass it is more familiarly known, in southwestern. New Mexico, which was mined for silver in the 1880?s and 18901s, Silver valued between $500,000 and $1,000,000 was extracted from the mine in the 10 years prior to 1893, when operations ceased. Almost all the silver mined was native silver, although a small quantity of argentite was produced. Nickel and cobalt were recognized in the ores, but they were thought to be of no consequence.

(iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

The second Belt Symposium in Missoula, MT, Oct. 9-16, 1983, was designed by its conveners as a field conference on progress in the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup rocks. The symposium was sponsored by the University of Montana with corporate support by Anaconda Minerals. Asarco Inc., Exxon Minerals Co.. Hecla Mining Co., Molycorp Inc., Noranda Exploration Co., and Utah International Inc. Introduction The Belt Supergroup is a thick middle Proterozoic sedimentary sequence deposited in a basin along the edge of the North American craton. Subsequent geological events have modified the basin so its remaining rocks outcrop in Montana, Idaho, northeast Washington, southeast British Columbia, and southwest Alberta. The Canadian equivalent of the Belt is called the Purcell Supergroup. Several similar age basins occurred along the western edge of the Proterozoic North American craton. The sedimentary sequence in the Belt basin aggregates is more than 18 km (60,000 ft) in the thickest section, where the bottom is still unexposed and the top removed by erosion. The limits of the Belt basin are poorly known because of later sedimentation and tectonic disruption. Knowledge about the Belt terrane has been difficult and tedious to obtain because the rocks are generally monotonous and fine-grained. During the last decade, new 1:250,000 scale reconnaissance maps of most of the Proterozoic Belt terrane were published, open-filed or otherwise brought close to completion. These maps provided the opportunity and challenge to consider the stratigraphy and tectonics of the Belt Supergroup as a complete basin. This broader view has contributed greatly to the solution of numerous geological problems created by previous, more focused work. Along with the availability of better geological base, there have been new exploration developments. The 1973-1983 decade saw proof of the commercial viability of the Cu-Ag mineralization at the Troy mine. The conclusion was also accepted that the Sullivan mine was a sedimentary massive sulfide. So was the conclusion that the Cu-Co mineralization at the Blackbird mine at Cobalt, ID, was the result of similar submarine exhalative processes. And there were discoveries of another Cu-Ag deposit "larger and higher grade" than the Troy mine and of two new massive sulfide districts. The Belt-Purcell terrane has long intrigued exploration and mining geologists as the host of Pb-Zn-Ag veins of Idaho's Coeur d'Alene district and of the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, British Columbia, one of the largest Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in North America. In the mid-1960s, Bear Creek Mining Co.'s discoveries of the stratabound copper-silver occurrences in the Revett Formation brought new interest in the basin's geology. The recognition of the Sullivan ore body as a sediment-hosted massive sulfide has also generated minerals exploration activity in the US portion of the Belt basin. This activity increased again after the Australian discovery of the world class Olympic Dam deposit at Roxby Downs, South Australia. This occurred because of some suggested similarities in the regional geologic setting of the Belt basin with the Adelaide geosyncline, the host for the Olympic Dam deposit. Technical Sessions Technical sessions topics included Lower Belt and Ravalli Group stratigraphy, Middle Belt carbonate and Missoula Group stratigraphy, Belt-Purcell stratigraphy, structure and tectonics, strata-related mineral resources, geochronology and geophysics, geochemistry and isotope geology, and a summary of significant problems. Evening poster sessions dealt with the topics and papers presented each day. Since the first Belt Symposium, mapping of the stratigraphic units and their tectonic setting has enabled geologists to progress in conducting a basin analysis. Belt Symposium II revealed no concensus on many aspects of belt geology. However, basic stratigraphic studies have reached the point that models can be constructed. The Prichard Formation is equivalent to the Aldridge Formation, but detailed correlations were not previously available. Studies were made by Finch and Baldwin (Cominco American) and by Cressman (US Geological Survey). These studies established important correlations of key markers within the Aldridge Formation to units in the Prichard Formation. This will help eliminate geologic interpretation problems at the US-Canada frontier and make Belt basin reconstruction more accurate. Also, the Sullivan ore deposit was shown to be formed in the deeper distal part of the basin. This contrasts to the more proximal depositional position of the Prichard Formation. Hamilton

A United Nations (UN) administered degasification technology transfer project, funded by the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) is underway at the Shihao Mine of the Songzao Coal Mining Ad- ministration in the province of Sichuan, Peoples Republic of China. This mine exploits multiple seams at depths ranging from 300 to 600 m below surface. In-seam boreholes and frequently spaced in-mine vertical boreholes, developed from underlying galleries constructed specifically for this purpose, currently degasify the seams in advance of mining at the Shihao Mine. Because of ventilation system constraints and the in-situ gas con- tent, longwall mining of the coals at this mine could not proceed without some form of pre-mining degasification. This paper presents a simulation based degasification plan of long, in-seam horizontal boreholes for the Shihao Mine. Simulations with a coalbed reservoir program assessed time dependent degasification characteristics of both vertical and in-seam horizontal boreholes. The simulations used input data from reservoir and desorption tests conducted at the mine site. The results produced system design nomograms to assist mine engineers in defining the appropriate borehole spacing necessary to degasify the seam in the time available for pre-mining drainage. The predicted effectiveness of the current vertical degasification scheme was compared with that for a horizontal borehole program and served as the basis for the recommended in-seam borehole configuration for the project at the Shihao Mine. The horizontal borehole degasification program requires substantially less gallery and borehole development than the present vertical degasification scheme.

The Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization zone near Molai (Greece) was explored by more, than 60 drillholes. Promising results led to the decision of additional drillholes in order to confirm the expected spatial extension of the deposit. A multiobjective approach is described which optimizes the location of a set of 5 additional drillholes. The decision is based on estimation errors for grade, thickness and depth of the main ore bearing layer, with respect to cut-off values for grade and thickness. The linear combination of these variables defines a favorability index which is used for mapping optimal drillhole locations. The map shows several clusters of favorable cells. A declustrering algorithm is used to select a representative cell for drilling in each cluster.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

The objective of this study was to produce coal dusts for laboratory research that are similar to mine airborne dusts in chemical, mineral, and physical characteristics. In this investigation, dusts produced in laboratory comminution equipment were compared with continuous-miner-generated dust for similarity in physical characteristics. Mining-generated dust (MGD) and bulk coal samples were first collected from an underground mining operation. The bulk samples were then processed in the laboratory for size reduction in various comminution devices. These laboratory-generated dust (LGD) samples were subjected to size and microscopic analyses. Physical properties of the dust particles were studied on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A numerical shape coordinate system (SCS) was also developed and applied to 300 particles from each sample. Statistical analysis was then performed on the collected data and characteristics of the MGD and LGD samples were compared.
