Most tailings storage facility (TSF) failures occur in active, upstream-type TSFs, often due to extreme and unexpected weather conditions—specifically, heavy rainfall and strong winds. This case study of a TSF in southern Arizona examines the use of the optimum safe beach distance (Doptimal, the optimum distance between the crest and decant pond) as a tool for monitoring geotechnical stability and reducing catastrophic failures. A digital model of the TSF was used to determine the critical beach distance (Dcritical) under normal weather conditions, and Doptimal was then determined by adding incremental distances to account for the effects of heavy rainfall (Drainfall) and strong winds (Dwind). To overcome accessibility issues, a drone was used to map the TSF geometry and create a digital model. This model served as the basis for conducting a coupled stress-seepage, finite-element (FEM) analysis with a safety factor of 2.0 to assess geotechnical stability (Dcritical). The safe beach distance increments were determined using the PMP (probable maximum precipitation) and possible maximum wind speed. Based on this analysis, the optimal safe beach distance at the study site was identified as 202.2 m. Since the current beach distance (371 m) exceeds this value, the TSF was considered to be stable and satisfied the design safety factor of 2.0. However, this distance should be reassessed periodically to account for changes in the TSF geometry and other conditions. Furthermore, it applies only TSFs that are well-managed and feature a smooth, non-undulating beach surface with a consistent slope.

Arizona, in 1966, has continued to be the site of an extensive and intensive search for metallic mineral deposits. Over fifty separate entities--companies and individuals--have been actively engaged in mineral exploration programs, both large and small, in the Basin-and-Range portion of the State. Certainly, copper has been primarily responsible for the major efforts, although associated gold, silver, and molybdenum mineralization also has been important in the economic evaluation of potential copper deposits. It is not difficult to explain why the Basin-Range portion of Arizona is receiving such attention. Part of the story, undoubtedly familiar to most, can be illustrated by reference to three graphical presentations. For example, Figure 1 shows Arizona's annual copper production for the period 1955-1965, inclusive, and it demonstrates that new records of production have been accomplished in each of the past 6 years and in 9 of the last 11 years.

At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral investigation of about 85,470 acres of the Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area, to determine mineral resources and mineral resource potential. The study area is in Lake County Oregon, about 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. Fieldwork was conducted in 1986, 1988, and 1989. Geologically, the study area lies on the northwest edge of the Basin and Range physiographic province, a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins characterized by interior drainage. Consolidated rocks are mostly Tertiary basalt and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. Low-lying areas are covered by Quaternary alluvial-fan, sand-dune, playa, lacustrine, and landslide deposits. The principal structural features are normal faults that have large vertical offsets; these faults are typically concentrated at the margins of large horst and graben. The 34,310-acre "additional," or western part of the area was mainly studied in 1988 and borders the east shore of saline Summer Lake. In this portion of the study area there is potential for undiscovered resources of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate as well as by-products, which include magnesium compounds, salts, potash, bromine, lithium, and tungsten associated with brines. No energy or mineral resources were identified in the study area, but brines within lake and playa sediments contain concentrations of chemical components suitable for the production of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate. Possible by-products include potash, salts, bromine, lithium, magnesium compounds, and tungsten. Limestone from the study area could be used in the recovery process of brine components or agricultural uses. The study area includes thermal springs and lies within 2 miles of the Summer Lake Known Geothermal Resource Area. Local production of geothermal power by the binary process may be economically feasible. Soda ash, soda ash products, and boric acid are widely used in fluxing metals, and have important applications and markets in the aluminum industry in the northwest and the developing Chinese counterpart. Evaporite commodities are essential to many "backbone" industries, and to many new applications and advanced materials. Markets for brine mineral products appear to be undergoing steady and strong growth, especially in the Pacific Northwest and in Pacific Rim countries. Soda ash produced near the study area would be 55 percent closer by rail to marine export at Portland, Oregon, than trona deposits of the Green River District (Wyoming). Soda ash and a daughter product, caustic soda, and sodium borohydride will receive increased application in the bleaching of paper pulp for environmental reasons. Caustic soda, used in many industrial processes, is more environmentally friendly when derived from soda ash than when produced from sodium chloride salt, because of the absence of a chlorine by-product. Producing soda ash from brines, a type of in situ" mining, can be done with minimal environmental degradation, and mining natural soda ash is environmentally as well as economically preferable to synthetic soda ash production.

In mid 1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of ASARCO and TAC, initiated a six phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration tar¬gets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable down dip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: Mississippian Humbug Formation replacement mineralization below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City Anticline; Humbug replacement mineralization in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade Humbug replacement mineralization in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein; Permian Park City Formation replacement mineralization in the West End Shaft Area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back Vein in the Judge Mine. Chilean Nationalization in 1971 resulted in a 30% budget cutback. The Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure; five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug, and Doughnut Formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? Hargett Dear Dr. Hanna: As discussed in our phone conversation, we are enclosing a suggested revision to the paper, "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations," published in MINERAL & METALLURGICAL PROCESSING, May 1990. The revision will replace the second paragraph in the article. The reason for the revision is that suspensions have decreased in market share since 1984 and at present comprise an estimated 25% to 30% of fluid mixtures. This represents 6% to 7% of all fluids and only 2% to 3% percent of all fertilizers. Based on national surveys conducted by the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO), suspensions comprised an estimated 25% of all fluid mixtures in 1974, 33% in 1976, 35% in 1980, 40% in 1984, and 36% in 1988. Revision to "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations." Suspension fertilizers are an important segment of the fertilizer industry in the United States. Suspensions allow higher concentrations of nutrients (N, P2O5, K2O) than clear liquid solution fertilizers. K20 content of solutions is limited to about 10%, while suspensions can contain more than 30% K2O. Suspensions can tolerate greater variations in temperature than solutions. In suspensions, if crystallization occurs, the crystals can remain suspended in a clay jell instead of settling as they would in solutions. Solubility is not a limiting factor in suspensions, since complete solubility of phosphate is not required. This allows a wider range of phosphate materials to be used. Also, materials commonly used in formulating suspensions are less expensive and more widely available than those for clear liquids (Getsiner et al., 1984).

The Getchell Gold Hine is located about 40 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Gold was discovered at the mine in 1934 and production was started in 1938 and ended in 1967 for its first phase of operation. Gold production during this period was about 800,000 ounces. In 1983, FirstHiss Gold Inc. purchased the property and initiated an exploration program that proved minable reserves of about 1,300,000 ounces of gold remained in the mine. During the exploration period, metallurgical testing was conducted to determine the most economical process that could be utilized for recovery of gold from the very refractory ore. After extensive investigation, pressure oxidation of the ore was selected, Engineering for the new plant commenced in 1987 and construction was completed in 1989 at a cost of about $87,400,000.00, not including financing cost.

INTRODUCTION Practical experience in mines with known presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in Canada and elsewhere shows that a very high concentration builds up in an unventilated dead end heading. As Holaday et al1 observed, even a minimal air movement results in a drastic reduction in radon daughter concentration. It is therefore obvious that the main objective of radon daughter control in the working environment is to design the ventilation system providing an optimized flow of fresh air into the workplace, resulting in acceptable climatic conditions and achieving radon daughter concentrations resulting in exposures as low as reasonably achievable. BASIC OBJECTIVES Large mining companies, having extensive material resources and professional expertise, have utilized elaborate electrical modelling in the design of mine ventilation systems as early as 1950 (coal mining industry in Europe) and with the advance of computer modelling techniques, their utilization in ventilation systems design is on the increase. Unfortunately, these methods are usually not available to small mining companies and even the large companies might not achieve the fullest benefit from utilizing them, if proper limiting factors are not considered in the modelling. When an evaluation of a ventilation system of a mine is undertaken in literature, a measure of the amount of air supplied underground per one ton of ore mined is used as an indicator of the efficiency of the ventilation system. Yet, even the greatest amount of air forced into the mine might not result in an acceptable working environment if a proper distribution of this air into individual working places is not achieved. The volume and the age of the air are probably the two most important factors in achieving acceptable radon daughter concentrations in the workplace, but other factors also have to be considered. DIRECTOR MINE - ALCAN, NEWFOUNDLAND FLUORSPAR WORKS ST. LAWRENCE, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA Ventilation To illustrate the effects of the design of the ventilation system on the control of radon daughter concentration, let us review the gradual development of the ventilation system of this mine from the earlier years of its development up until its final years of operation. This mine, located near the community of St. Lawrence on the south coast of Burin Peninsula was developed in the late thirties and reached full production by 1942. Unfortunately as was customary at that time, the only source of ventilation was a natural draft. The mine was extremely wet, and no significant attention was initially given to possible health effects of dust. It was not until the mid-fifties, when a number of cases of silicosis had surfaced, that de Villiers and Windish2 observed a significant increase of lung cancer incidence among the miners in comparison to its incidence among the general population of Newfoundland. Suspicions regarding radiation as a cause of the lung cancer were expressed, but it was only in surveys taken in late 1959 and early 1960 that Windish3 and Little4 established the presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in very high concentrations. Windish, de Villiers and Hurley suggested that the most likely source of the radon in the mine was the mine water which dissolved radon during its passage through the granitic country rock in the surrounding geological area. This conclusion was confirmed by analyses of water from various areas of the mine by the Atomic Energy Canada Limited laboratories. The radon values in the samples varied from 4,240 to 12,850 pCi/L5. Following the discovery of the presence of radon daughters in the mine, the company took speedy action to install mechanical ventilation for the mine. The system was not designed as a total unit, but fans were installed rather on a trial and error basis. The basic system installation began in March 1960 and was completed by 1962. It remained basically unchanged with only minor modifications until August 1973 when a wholly new, redesigned ventilation system was implemented. A schematic section of the mine and its ventilation system for the period prior to March 1960 is given in Figure "A", for the period 1960-1973 in Figure "B", and for the period after August 1973 in Figure "C". The ventilation system prior to 1960 is not known. All workings of the mine were ventilated only by natural ventilation. If any measurements of airflows at different or any times of the year ever existed, no records have been preserved. The very minimal natural ventilation was augmented by "blowing" air from compressed air supply lines and exhaust air from drills. It is known that the compressor capacities of the mine were limited and therefore no significant air movement was probably created by the "blowing".

Mechanized underground mines suffer from noise overexposure. Noise levels are often above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) where underground fans are used. Sound levels in active workings can reach up to 121 A-weighted decibels (dB(A)), especially when fans are not equipped with silencers. Use of silencers seldom ensures PEL. Overexposure of noise induces permanent hearing loss among mine workers. A NIOSH-funded research project and field studies at six coal and non-coal mines revalidated the findings. The University of Utah undertook laboratory studies to reduce fan noise at the source. A new silencer prototype with varying noise dampening material was designed and tested. The silencer and associated extension can be repacked with different dampening materials. The silencer and the extension were used in various configurations. Attempts were also made to simulate field conditions. The tests demonstrated a maximum sound level attenuation of about 14 dB(A) at the fan discharge. A properly designed silencer offers lesser resistance and thereby better fan performance and lower energy cost. The re-packable silencer is more likely to be maintained properly. Lowering of noise level happens in audible frequencies (4000 to 8000 Hz) which are important in A-weighting.

With an ongoing concern for safety and health in the workplace, NYCO® requested three medical evaluations be undertaken to study possible health hazards of wollastonite. Two of the evaluations were conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). One was in 1976 (Ref. 1), and the second in 1982 (Ref. 2). The aim of the two studies was to answer the following two questions: 1. Do wollastonite workers exhibit more respiratory abnormalities than workers not exposed to wollastonite? 2. Is there a relationship between prevalence of respiratory abnormalities and accumulated expo-sure time to wollastonite?

In a world dependent in part on the consumption of depletable natural resources, development of new areas of mineralization is a necessity for replacing those reserves. Exploration, which is the initial task of replacement, is an information-gathering process which supplies input for management decisions on mine development. If the demand for resources is the driving force of exploration, then the scientific basis for its pursuance is the hypothesis of anomalous mineralization in a metallogenic province, which is tested by measuring physical characteristics of natural phenomenon. The resulting data are reduced, analyzed, and interpreted to locate expressions or responses associated with possible ore bodies. The process is, in fact, repeated in ever increasing measurement detail to increase the accuracy and precision of information for decision making. Exploration ceases when management makes the decision to develop a mineralized area, to hold a property for more favorable market conditions, or to drop a property because it is not economically viable.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, WMATA, has constructed over 92 revenue miles of rapid transit facilities including some 14 miles of rock tunnel and 12 miles of earth tunnel. The system map is shown in Figure 1. During construction it is not unusual for contractor to encounter ground conditions resulting in major problems and extra cost. Problems such as major rockfalls and a "stuck" boring machine in squeezing rock are not unusual. In recent years, faced with additional tunnel construction projects, the Authority has sought newer tunneling methods which might be less costly. One new method which has been tried is NATM, the New Austrian Tunnel¬ing Method. NATM, which is applicable to both soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling, relies on miners and comparatively small machines to excavate in conventional ways, but it is unique in its methods of obtaining "stand-up" time at the excavated face and its method of using shotcrete as an initial lining, frequently with a drainage system to reduce hydro-static pressure on the final lining. Lower costs result from use of a cast-in-place concrete liner, and from a reduction in the number of work operations at the mine heading which provides better daily production. WMATA has recently completed three twin bore tunnels constructed by NATM technology. The first was the Wheaton Tunnel and Section, followed by the tail track tunnel to total some 4200 linear feet cut through jointed rock up to 270 feet below ground surface, and the last was in soft ground at Fort Totten. Ore was first discovered at the Kidd Creek mine site during the first few days of December 1963 when a diamond drill hole there cut sulfide mineralization. This event marked the end of the search started 11 years earlier with the conception of a geological idea. Economic forces provided the stimulus needed for the application of this idea but other-events, and legal considerations, also played arole in delaying the ultimate discovery. The location of Kidd Creek is shown in Fig. 1. Management of the then Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. had become concerned in 1951 at the company's declining reserves of native sulfur in Texas. This problem was to be alleviated by new discoveries and development of methods to recover sulfur from sour gas. At the time, however, the solution appeared to lie in the recovery of sulfur from pyritic ores. Canada was chosen as the best country in which to find these ores. Walter Holyk was hired in 1951 to conduct the search. By 1952, he was working in the area near Sherbrooke, Quebec, known as the "Eastern Townships" where mineralization consisting of base metal sulfides in volcanic rocks has long been known. His observations here led him to the then revolutionary conclusion that such mineralization could have formed as part of the volcanic process and not, as was generally supposed at the time, by replacement. On learning of the discovery of similar mineralization near Bathurst, NB, he moved there in the spring of 1953. He was able to utilize his new concept and found the Half-Mile Lake sulfide deposit.

"A biodegradable flocculant was produced during growth of Bacillus megaterium. The major component of the bioflocculant was found to be a polysaccharide composed of some proteins. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis revealed the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the bioflocculant, and thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the transition and crystalline melting point at 90-105°C. The effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of mineral suspensions were evaluated. The bioflocculant exhibited good flocculating capability on mineral suspensions and achieved flocculating efficiencies of 90 percent for kaolinite and 85 percent for hematite suspensions at a dosage of only 5 mL/L. The maximum arsenite removal was found to be 90 percent at a bioflocculant dosage of 2 g/L, which is better than traditional chemical flocculants. This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants have potential for application in environmental cleanup, such as in the flocculation of mineral fines and in the remediation of solutions that contain toxic heavy metals.IntroductionBioflocculants are biopolymers produced by microorganisms during their growths. The predominant components of a bioflocculant are extracellular polymeric substances such as glycoprotein, protein, cellulose and nucleic acid (Salehizadeh and Shojaosadati, 2001). Bioflocculants have gained much wider attention due to their biodegradability and safety. In recent years, the study of bioflocculants has attracted wide attention. Bioflocculants can be nontoxic, harmless and eco-friendly. Normally, they exhibit different functional properties, serving as stabilizer, dispersant or thickener. Among these properties, flocculation is of major interest. For example, Phormidium sp. strain J-1, isolated from a drainage channel, exhibited excellent flocculation activity for bentonite particles in liquid suspension (Fattom and Shilo, 1984). A protein bioflocculant produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis could efficiently flocculate suspended solids while losing their flocculating activity by enzymatic digestion (Kurane et al., 1994, Takeda et al., 1991). Klebsiella sp. strain S11 screened from activated sludge was unable to flocculate without the addition of calcium chloride (Dermlim et al., 1999)."

"Superstorm Sandy (Sandy) created a storm surge that inundating many of the tunnels that pass beneath the Hudson and East Rivers. The tunnels are vital infrastructure links for the economy of New York City and the northeast region. The sea water, which contains highly reactive salts, caused significant damage to electrical and mechanical systems. In addition, the salt water inundation left corrosive precipitants on the tunnel linings and on and within electrical duck banks. After the salt water was evacuated from the tunnels, condition assessments were performed using a state of the art approach involving high resolution laser scanning, digital imaging, and thermal imaging. These scans were performed prior to hands on inspections. The damage assessment concluded that, although the tunnel structural linings were not damaged, the interior elements of the tunnels needed major rehabilitation to arrest the continual deterioration of the structures. This paper details the state of the art approach used for these tunnel inspections. INTRODUCTION On October 29, 2012 Super Storm Sandy flooded a large number of both transit and vehicular tunnels in the New York Metropolitan area. The region’s transportation network was severely disrupted. The storm damage is estimated to have been in excess of $30 billion, and with the tunnels out of service, the local economy was losing hundreds of millions in economic activity. Restoration of these tunnels was a very high priority and the resulting expedited restoration process did not always provide adequate time for comprehensive condition surveys. This resulted in many of these surveys being conducted after service restoration. Inspecting highly trafficked transit tunnels is challenging and the logistics of working in short night outages led to a rethinking of the conventional inspection approach. Traditionally, visual and tactile methods are first used to inspect tunnels and then quite often followed by LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanning and perhaps infra-red scanning. For multi-mile tunnels, the time required to visually map tunnel features can be quite extensive. By performing the scanning first and then performing the visual and tactile inspections, one is able to use the scan data to identify the specific areas that need detailed inspections. This approach was used quite successfully for a number of the NYC tunnels."

"The use of composite linings, consisting of permanent sprayed primary and secondary linings with a sandwiched spray applied waterproofing membrane is expected to improve efficiency and reduce lining thickness, but it also brings complex primary-secondary lining interaction. This issue is further complicated by the uncertainty regarding the long-term behavior and parameters of the sprayed concrete–sprayed membrane interface.This paper aims to address this issue by presentation of a series of numerical analyses of a typical shallow SCL tunnel in soft ground with a range of design assumptions on the interface behavior: (1) compression only; (2) compression and tension; and (3) compression, tension, and shear.The results demonstrate that the assumed interface behavior has a significant impact on the primary-secondary lining interactions. A design approach of ignoring the tension and shear bond at the interface may not be conservative particularly for serviceability. This paper explains the rationale behind these conclusions and discusses the implications for design.INTRODUCTIONSprayed Concrete Tunnel Lining SystemsSprayed concrete linings (SCL) have been used in conventional tunneling for decades. However, details of SCL systems may differ to a large extent depending on ground conditions and specific tunneling methodologies.In hard rock conditions, for example, drill and blast excavation is typically supported by rock bolts and sprayed concrete (NGI 2014). Such tunnels are usually designed fully drained and the above-mentioned support elements considered permanent without the need for a further inner liner. Therefore, there is no structural interaction between separate lining shells to consider.In conventional tunneling in the European Alps, a double shell lining is typically utilized, consisting of an outer (primary) sprayed concrete lining and an inner (secondary) cast-in-place concrete lining, separated by a waterproofing system. The primary lining normally includes rock bolts and may include other support elements. The waterproofing system is usually based on a plastic membrane and a geotextile fleece. The tunnel may be designed fully or partially drained or fully undrained. Although there are two structural lining shells interacting, investigation of such interaction is generally irrelevant to designers because the primary lining is considered only temporary (fully sacrificial in the long term). An overview of reasons for this assumption is given, for example, by Lemke (2014). The secondary lining is designed to resist all foreseeable loads on the tunnel. The primary lining may, in reality, interact structurally with the secondary lining during the life span of the tunnel. However, since the secondary lining design must cover all possible (extreme) scenarios, investigation of such interaction does not bring any value to the design."

ennec?tt's Bameys Canyon Mine personnel developed an mnovahve process to extract gold from a small (1.8 million tons) sulfide ore zone in an oxidized ore body located at the Bameys Canyon Mine. This approach consists of extracting the sulfides from the ore via flotation, shipping the concentrate to Kennecott's new smelter, and mixing the flotation tailings with the oxide ore, agglomerating the mixture, and stacking the resultin tailings/oxide ore combination on the heaps. Conventional heap leaching technology is utilized to recover the gold from the mixed materials. Overall, the total gold recovery from the sulfide ore is esti­mated to be 90%. This approximation is based on a smelter gold recovery of 98% from the concentrate and an 88% recovery from the tailings during heap leaching

Point load strength (Is50) and slake durability (ID2) indices provide a measure of the strength and durability of rock fragments and are related to the alteration intensity and frictional resistance of the materials. Samples were collected from the rock piles, alteration scars and debris flows at the Questa mine with the purpose of examining relationships between Is50 and ID2, mineralogy, chemistry, weathering, hydrothermal alteration, and other geotechnical parameters. The Is50 from the various rock piles ranges from 0.6-8.2 MPa and the ID2 ranges from 80.9-99.5%. The Is50 and ID2 results indicate that the samples from the debris flows are stronger (average Is50= 4.0 MPa and ID2= 98.4%) than the rock-pile samples and that the alteration scar samples are weaker (average Is50 = 2.8 MPa and ID2 = 89.2%) than the rock-pile samples, but still most of these rocks are strong in terms of their Is50 and ID2. The Is50 decreases as the degree of alteration increases in some rock pile and alteration scar samples, but not in all. However, the majority of the rock fragments within the rock piles still indicate high strength, even after 25-40 years of weathering.

The history of Australia is a narrative of the discovery and development of its mineral wealth. The gold strike at Ballarat, Victoria, in 1851 transformed the colony by triggering the first great influx of migrants to Australia, and the development of subsequent mineral discoveries lead to a vast resource industry. However, beneficiation of base and precious metal ores carried with it an environmental penalty, not addressed until the last quarter of this century. In particular, the extensive deposits of gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc reside in sulphurous ores which often contain arsenic, antimony and mercury as significant contaminants that are released as unwanted by-products during smelting and refining. Until recently, these toxic concentrates were discharged to the atmosphere or receiving waters, collected in tailings ponds close to the smelters, or dumped at sea. Although such procedures . were acceptable in the past, more stringent environmental controls have required a re-examination of these practices and encouraged intensive efforts to develop enduring solutions to the disposal of these wastes. From this research has emerged a promising new generic technology called Xtaltite (pronounced crystal-tight). In this approach, geochemical principles are employed, first, to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals to low levels, and second, to identify and engineer suitable repositories for the permanent disposal of the consolidated waste form. In this paper, we emphasise the application of Xtaltite to the disposal of arsenious smelter fumes derived from gold winning. The principles ofXtaltite will be described and its technical and economic performance compared with conventional technolo­gies.

Fighting the challenge of diminishing ore grades, low base metal prices and a changing pattern of ore supply, Boliden has now taken the second generation of the fully­autogenous grinding concept on stream, Using new design and a highly-developed process control system the benefits of conventional two stage autogenous grinding technology are obtained with a wide range of ore types. The APC grinding system has been developed further. A new design of the Boliden Pebble Extractor together with an advanced control strategy make the performance of the APC concept superior to all other grinding systems with any ore quality. The capacity and simplicity of the autogenous grinding concept is equivalent to the best SAG installations but the operational costs are up to 25 % lower than for SAG or other primary ball or rod mill systems. The concept is as flexible as conventional crushing and rod mill installations but investment and operating costs are of the order of 25 % lower. Also, from the metallurgical point of view, the different types of autogenous grinding system outperform all other comminution systems including SAG. From 1989 to 1991 four fully autogenous grinding sections have been installed at various concentrators at the Boliden company. Old crushing plants and rod and pebble grinding circuits have finally been replaced by highly productive and cost-efficient autogenous grinding equipment. Significant savings in operational costs have already been reported. Power consumption and maintenance costs have been reduced significantly. Productivity expressed as milled tonnes per operator has been improved. Metallurgical results have developed favourably.
