White Pine Copper Company operates a mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan using a modified room-and-pillar system for extracting ore.1 Mine production averages 15, 500 tons per day. The terrain is predominantly level and the depth of cover varies from 500 to 800 feet over the present workings with depth increasing as mining progresses down the dip. The deposit is situated on a low angle plunging, anticlinal structure composed of sedimentary beds. Local terminology for the stratigraphic units which contain the ore horizons, named in ascending order, is as follows: lower sandstone, parting shale, upper sandstone and upper shale. The ore zones of copper enrichment are, contained in the parting and upper shales. The parting shale will vary; from 6. 5 to 9.0 feet thick; the upper sandstone from 2 to 10 feet; and the upper shale from 1. 5 to 6. 5 feet. Two variation of the room-and-pillar system are used to extract the ore depending on grade and local ground conditions. One system is called the parting shale method and recovers the parting shale only. This system requires a mining height of 8 1/2 feet to accommodate large-scale, high-capacity equipment and this working height is obtained by removing approximately 1 to 2 feet of the barren lower sandstone with the ore. Under the second system, locally termed full column, the mining height is about 14-1/2 feet and this system removes the parting shale, the upper sandstone and the lower mineralized zone, approximately 1-1/2 feet, of the upper shale at which point it is possible to maintain a competent back (Fig. 1).1

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is developing new dewatering technology to permit the recycling of iron values contained in wet steel plant sludges. In laboratory tests, Q-BOP fume sludge was dewatered to 12% moisture by displacing water with acetone in a plate-and-frame pressure filter. Acetone is reclaimed through distillation at lower cost than conventional thermal drying of the sludge. The projected additional energy requirement for acetone treatment of the sludge, including acetone recovery, is $5 to $7 per dry ton.

The decade of the 70?s saw a series of landmark environmental resource programs enacted by the Congress. Many states followed suit, so that by the end of the decade air quality, water pollution, and the conservation of other natural resources, including minerals, were the subject of a wide-ranging body of laws, policies, regulations, and procedures. Many of the actions required or permitted by this rule-making involved areas for which adequate information and substantial experience were not available. Moreover, goals and objectives were sometimes established which were enormously difficult to achieve technically, or of such formidable expense as to cause concern about their consequences in the marketplace. It is therefore hardly surprising that one product of all this activity has been a mass of litigation. Court dockets are crowded with suits and counter-suits involving both substantive and procedural aspects of environmental protection. Indeed, it is probably fair to say that the volume and range of environmentally-related disputes brought before the courts parallels that generated by the civil rights movement a decade ago. There were also some new dimensions to the environmental movement. For the first time, the national environmental policy act required agencies to prepare environmental impact statements when proposed projects or activities would have substantial impacts on environmental resources. Another requirement of many of the new programs mandated meaningful citizen participation in public decision-making. Here, as elsewhere, the purpose was admirable, but guidelines were vague, and the result often was inaction, polarization, and litigation.

Fall of ground is a leading source of worker injury and fatality indicating a persistent need for ground monitoring technology. The HRTMM is an experimental convergence monitor utilizing a digital camera and custom software to track the position of one or more lasers across the target. Apparent laser movement is proportional to target convergence. The HRTMM was installed in an underground mine near active operations to test its response to the mining environment. This included intense blasting vibration and mine fog. Results and potential of the new monitoring technology will be discussed.

A new, large mine is about to be born. Many years and millions of dollars have been invested in exploration. An orebody has been found and proven. All necessary political and legal work to establish rights and conditions for development are complete. The feasibility studies are favorable. Financing has been arranged. Board approval has been given to proceed. The time has come to engage a contractor to design and build the new facilities in a location, as is the common case today, far re¬moved from the centers of advanced technologic development where the minerals will ultimately be used. A select list of Engineering and Construction (E&C) companies is asked to prepare proposals. At this point the common viewpoint among mining companies is that the company's sole remaining problem, a major one to be sure, is to select qualified contractors to design and build the project at the lowest cost and shortest time possible so that production can start generating a return on investment. The purpose of this discussion is to explore the viewpoint of the large E&C contractor toward such projects. It differs in important ways from that of the client mining company and it is these differences and the reasons for them that must be understood by the client if severe difficulties and misunderstandings with the contractor, starting at the beginning of contract negotiation and continuing through design and construction to final startup are to be avoided or minimized. Often enough, the difference is in degree, not kind, which only serves to obscure the fact that a difference exists.

A geometallurgy study aims to link metallurgy and geology to reduce technical risk and enhance the economic performance of a mineral-processing plant. It does so by accounting for variability in a deposit to develop cash-flow models with variable throughput rates. High-quality sample selection for metallurgical test work that is representative of the deposit is an essential component of a geometallurgy study, but the large multidimensional data set makes sample selection a daunting task, as classifying the data set while respecting its heterogeneity is difficult. This paper presents a streamlined approach for sample selection, using statistical analysis techniques in Python. It cuts down time to select samples from around 1,200 s per drillhole to about 60 s for data classification and from 12 h to 8 h for handpicking samples from the classified data set, translating to cost savings. The cumulative sum method and k-means clustering method are used in the methodology to elegantly classify the data and select representative samples. The effectiveness of the methodology is demonstrated by presenting data from a prefeasibility study of a copper-iron mine in which 40 samples were selected for flotation test work.

Sulfur containing collectors have been shown over the years to function as strong, selective and non-selective sulfide mineral collectors. Unfortunately, the majority of the widely known sulfur based collectors are of low molecular weight, volatile and subsequently, possess an objectionable odor. Higher molecular weight sulfur based collectors (C9 and higher) are significantly less odiferous due to lower volatility and lower vapor pressures. In this study, a specific proprietary higher carbon number collector, Orfom® MC 37, was blended and used successfully to recover 2-3% additional molybdenum in a laboratory flotation system, when compared to a standard collector blend. Copper recoveries were also positively affected. Further testing is required to give additional conditions favorable to increased copper and molybdenum recoveries, but indications at this time show the proprietary sulfur based collector blend to be a selective collector of molybdenum, while providing a significant increase in copper recoveries.

The porphyry copper province of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is the largest copper producing region in the world. Most of the deposits occur in Arizona which now produces over 54% of the newly mined copper in the United" States. As the many recent discoveries are brought into production, Arizona's share of the nation's copper production will increase. The term "porphyry copper" as used in this paper includes all deposits of generally low grade disseminated copper mineralization amenable to bulk mining techniques. Therefore, copper deposits such as Pima-Mission, Twin Buttes, and Vekol where the copper mineralization occurs principally in the intruded rocks will be considered as "porphyry copper" deposits. Most of the deposits have been discovered since World War II, consequently, the southwest, and particularly southern Arizona is perhaps the most intensively explored area for copper deposits on earth. Most of the major natural resource companies in the United States and Canada maintain exploration offices in southern Arizona. To illustrate the success of exploration efforts, the location of porphyry copper deposits either known or producing prior to World War II are shown on figure 1 and the deposits discovered since World War II which are either in production or in the exploration and development stage are shown on figure 2.

In this paper we apply continuous-time option pricing theory (Dixit 8 Pindyck 1994) to show how to obtain an optimal investment rule for a mining project which requires sequential in- vestments. The application per se is to some extent very simple. The main purpose of the paper, however, is to draw the attention of mining people to how the option pricing theory may be used to capital investment decisions. This topic in economics is quite new but is attracting a lot of attention.

The Homestake Mine, located in Lead, SD, has been in business for 113 years. Until 10 years ago, conventional mining methods were used to extract ore. Due to complexities in the ore bodies and increasing costs, new technology was introduced to the mine. An integral part of this technology was mechanized cut-and-fill mining. This mining method currently produces about 50% of the annual production and has proven to he safe and economical. As a result, the Homestake Mine remains competitive in today's market.

For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

In the present experimental study the geochemical stability of inorganic polymers was studied by immersing them in various solutions (distilled water, seawater and 0.5N HCl) for a period of 7 months. Inorganic polymers were synthesised by mixing ferronickel slag with kaolinite, potassium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution. The cement like paste was heated at 80 °C for 48 hours and left for curing at room temperature. Their structural integrity was assessed by compressive strength testing after subjection to freeze-thaw cycles as well as high temperature heating. XRD studies were carried out in order to identify new formed phases and provide useful information regarding the progress of the mechanisms involved.

INTRODUCTION The air flow in the mine ventilation network can be categorized in three ways: natural splitting, controlled splitting, and semi-controlled splitting. In natural splitting, the air flow in branches of a ventilation network apportions itself according to the aerodynamic resistance of the branches. In controlled splitting, a prescribed quantity of air is circulated through each branch. In semi-controlled splitting, flow in some branches is fixed to a desired quantity while in other branches it is split naturally. In practice, the mine ventilation networks present the latter two situations. Usually, the resistance of each branch in the network is known and the quantity of air in the working place is predetermined by safety considerations. If the number of branches whose airflow quantities are known is equal to or larger than the number of the fundamental meshes in the network, then the network becomes a controlled splitting network (Wang, 1982 a). Otherwise, it is a semi-controlled splitting network. If no booster fans are used in the network, the problem can be solved as either controlled or semi-controlled splitting networks in order to determine the main fan pressure and regulator size and location. All techniques are based on Kirchoff's flow and energy conservation laws and Atkinson's Equation. Booster fans can be used in controlled and semi-controlled splitting networks. It has been proven both theoretically and practically that using booster fans in these ventilation systems can improve flow distribution and reduce consumption of power (McPherson et al., 1985). The current techniques used in determination of booster fan location and size include simulation, linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. These techniques can be classified into two groups. The first group, including linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing techniques, deals with controlled flow networks. The second, simulation, can be applied to the handling of semi-controlled flow networks. Mathematically, the problem of controlled splitting networks can be solved more easily than that of semi-controlled splitting networks. This is because the controlled flow network can be formulated as a linear programming problem, for the solution of which there are several sophisticated algorithms. Moreover, the semi-controlled flow network is usually modeled through nonlinear programming, for which there are no universally applicable solutions. The procedure described by Wu and Topuz, 1986, can be used to convert a semi-controlled network to a controlled flow network, and the problem can then be easily solved by the techniques used for solution of a controlled flow network problem. In practice, a mine ventilation network may change from controlled splitting to semicontrolled splitting with advancement of mining. This dynamic nature of mine ventilation makes the problem more complicated and necessitates development of new solution procedures which will consider the overall economics of the system. CONTROLLED SPLITTING NETWORK The problem in controlled splitting networks with booster fans is to determine the operational characteristic of the main fans, and the location and size of booster fans and regulators. The objective is to satisfy the air flow rate requirement for each branch while minimizing consumption of energy. The techniques used for the controlled splitting network problem include linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. The P/B collision and attachment interactions in fine particle flotation have been quantitatively analyzed. New models for attachment probability and kinetics of ‘true flotation’ have been developed. The results are given for both a single bubble and a bubble swarm. The mechanism of the attachment event is also examined. It is shown that (i) impact collision mechanism and rolling mechanism can be ignored in actual fine particle flotation and sliding mechanism is of importance for attachment of particle onto the bubble surface (ii) the attachment probability of fine particles is independent of bubble size and determined by the kinetic measure induction time of hydrophobicity. The theoretical predictions are also compared with the experimental data.

The ever increasing need for treating fine complex mineral bodies has led to the evolution and rapid development of advanced processing techniques for fine grinding, classification an if mineral separation and purification. With the introduction of these new technologies and understanding of underlying fundamental principles, mineral processing is now being applied to materials ranging from ceramics and composites to superconductors. In this review, current and potential applications of mineral engineering techniques to advanced materials processing are discussed. Particularly, material processing involving ultrafine grinding, dispersion and flocculation and thin film formation is examined. Novel techniques of solid/liquid separation involving manipulation of interfaces and use of high intensity high gradient superconductor magnetic equipment for solid/solid separation are discussed.

Contract mining has a definite place in the mining industry, both in the United States and around the world. A mine owner should evaluate the utilization of contract mining in the devel­opment and production of mining properties. This evaluation of contract mining should be performed at various times in the life of a mining prope1iy from the development and initial operation of a new mining project, periodically throughout the mine's life, and at mine closure. Many factors must be considered in ana­lyzing and evaluating the potential of contract mining and those factors are both quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative factors are those factors for which costs or measures can be determined or estimated objectively; and qualitative factors are those factors for which costs or measures must be determined subjectively and do not lend themselves to objective determination or estimation. Some of the qualitative aspects may provide only yes, maybe, or no answers while others will provide a tendency or partiality toward one answer or the other without a quantified cost. The major quantitative aspects include operating and capital costs, monitoring costs, capital preservation, acquisition and disposal of new and used equipment, direct payroll and administrative costs, recruiting and training costs, and employment and termi­nation of staff and hourly personnel. The major qualitative areas include corporate philosophy, risks associated with capital and operating costs, financing the project, operating control, operat­ing flexibility, recruiting and training of personnel, employment and termination, administrative concerns, and owner/contractor relationship.

In galena flotation, lead ethyl xanthate, Pb(EtX)2, is precipitated and is physically adsorbed in the form of multilayers on the chemically adsorbed first layer of Pb(EtX). 1,2) The solid particles are coated with layers of Pb(EtX)2 in heterogeneous manner over surface areas possessing both anodic and cathodic character (3,4) It is anticipated that the mode of formation of Pb(EtX)2 and the number of ions present, together with stable or unstable by-product species, have great influence on the surface characteristics of galena. The information obtained from a study of these parameters may have important practical applications in flotation. Lead ethyl xanthate is sparingly soluble in water. The metal and xanthate ions released to the aqueous solution during its dissolution undergo various types of reactions depending upon the pH values of the system. Extensive work (5,6) has been carried out to elucidate the mechanism involved in acid decomposition of xanthate ions. Different decomposition paths (7,8) have been proposed for the hydrolytic decomposition of xanthate in neutral and alkaline solutions, The concentrations of lead ions vary due to a number of chemical reactions, regulated by the pH and the temperature of the bulk phase. The hydrophobic character of Pb(EtX)2 may change with the nature of chemical reactions. Some of the numerous by-product species in solution may adsorb on the solid and change the properties of surface film either favourably or adversely. The flotation performance of galena, therefore, may depend to a considerable extent on the physical and chemical stabil¬ity of Pb(EtX)2 layers. Since little work has been reported in literature dealing with the stability of Pb(EtX)2 and its correlation with the flotation of galena, attempts have been made In this study to evaluate the behaviour of freshly formed Pb(EtX)2 in aqueous systems at various pH values.
