The problem of assessing uncertainty in grade estimates has been a topic of research and debate since kriging was first introduced. Use of the kriging variance was originally touted as all that was necessary in order to produce confidence limits for grade estimates. Since then the prudence of using the kriging variance for confidence interval estimation has been questioned, and techniques such as the jackknife and conditional simulation have been proposed to develop "true" interval estimates. This paper compares the differences between interval estimates produced by the three methods and makes conclusions about the performance of confidence intervals produced by the different methods.

In order to improve the thermal environment in deep coal mines, two principles can be applied: firstly, the reduction of heat flow into the air stream, and secondly, cooling of the air current. First of all one should try to minimize the heat-flow rate into the air stream underground by the mining method itself. German coal mines prefer the caving system of advance longwall mining simultaneously on several levels with ascensional ventilation. The effects of descensional ventilation and different face ventilation layouts on the thermal environment are discussed, besides the effects of pneumatic and hydraulic stowing. Application of all mentioned possibilities together instead of today's common mining method would reduce the Basis Effective Temperature considerably. In the future, hydraulic haulage of the raw coal underground substituting belt conveying may be a mean to improve the thermal environment further on. If the working depth of a coal mine exceeds about 1 000 m, cooling of the air stream under-ground will be necessary in addition to the above- mentioned measures. Generally, in German coal mines different types of indirect-contact air coolers located nearby the face are used. Besides such so-called cooling coils, large-capacity spray coolers are used because they work more efficiently if a great cooling duty is demanded. Common designs of both air cooler types and their possible utilizations are demonstrated. Deep coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany need up to 30 MW of total cooling capacity. Mostly, the needed chilled water is cooled by large-capacity refrigeration plants placed on surface, underground or in combination of the above locations nearby the shaft. Due to the increasing underground cooling demand, the distribution of the chilled water and the control of the air coolers become more important. The conception of a control system is discussed, which is based on the control of the single air coolers. All air coolers of a mine are controlled so as to optimize the supply water-flow rate with regard to the demanded cooling duty of the coolers. On the next upper level of the control system the whole chilled water network and finally the refrigeration plant is regulated. Present research work deals with the use of ice for cooling mines. There are some unsolved problems in this new cooling concept. Some aspects of making, transporting and storing ice are described. The use of ice may probably reduce the cooling costs of German collieries, which are at present approximately 4 DM per ton of saleable coal.

Mining is most vital to our civilization. The current model of extraction technologies was designed without an expiration date and therefore generates environmental effects that are severe. Mining results-effects have been traditionally accepted and promoted around the world since Agricola described mining. Mining’s extractive technology is outmoded and standardized and inflicts negative results-effects on nature. Those results are liabilities dimensioned in legacy and type of nature able to provide to the next generation. In order to design, build, and transform mining effectively we must ask: What is the vision of mining? Mining has exhausted its antiquated mindset of over 200 years. Now it merely pilots us into crisis. The challenge today is to resolve the socio-environmental conflicts globally with a radical transformation of the mining business at its core. This paper illustrates that old mindsets must be radically updated or the concept of mining will continue to be trapped. Changing the mindset will enable discourse toward a new destiny. These changes will change mining for the better. We are able to evolve and get different results than in the past by pursuing a new legacy to live in harmony with nature for many more years. INTRODUCTION Minerals are supported by the law of conservation of mass. They have the unique characteristics of being finite, exhaustible, unsustainable, and have an unlimited recycling. Minerals are also hard to find because we have explored and virtually exhausted the whole crust of this planet. Orebodies that used to be considered world class are almost exhausted. In the short-term, it would be almost impossible to find new world class orebodies unless they could be extracted from the ocean, the moon or other planets like Mars. Mining is designed to extract minerals for profit and to keep civilizations functioning. Subsequently, mining has a social issue that is an economic issue. Thus, mining must be seen as a real and urgent subject matter that must be protected in thought and in fact. The actual mining extractive technologies produce disequilibrium in nature that has unknowable effects in the course of time. History is filled with the negative consequences to nature due to the model of mining. The evidence of these effects from mining’s model is apparent in repetitive liabilities around the world. The effects negatively impact nature without any consideration to how these impacts will manifest themselves in the future. This model of mining is widespread and extolled in every corner of the planet because it is old and familiar and although wasteful and outdated, we do not want to expend financial resources from profit or elsewhere to explore newer ideas, methods, or technologies that would help us keep a sustainable harmony between extraction and nature. We need a new vision for mining today and to explore in what way academia can and must play a social role in the teaching of mining methods. We need to question why we continue to support the old model of mining and to ask ourselves what prevents us from updating and modernizing the method of mining to meet the current needs not just of civilization but the urgent needs to undo some of the damage to the earth. This paper hopes to develop a method to change our minds about how we conduct the business of mining in order to control the destiny of it.

This paper presents best practice data management for monitoring of extensometers in Australian underground coal mines. This work is based on the combined experience of the authors and the available literature. The information and ideas presented herein are a culmination of many years of database development founded from mine site-based ground support design, underground inspections, extensometer data management and data analysis. Each author has more than ten years’ experience as a practicing geotechnical engineer at several operating industry wide research project focused on utilizing mechanical extensometer data for data analytics and machine learning. Principal hazard ground control management plans, stipulated in Australian coal mining legislation, outline the mandatory installation of ground monitoring devices during routine mining activities. After 20+ years of data gathering the barrier to implementing modern data analytics remains the challenges imposed by inconsistent data structure and data quality. This inconsistency is still routinely found between sites, companies and mining regions. Through the relatively simple application of a standardized database structure, the potential to shift from simplistic tracking of trigger levels, siloed at individual sites, to an industry standard method for compilation & comparison of monitoring data is enabled.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the manufactured product. Clearly, the engineer who is responsible for selecting a mode of transport must base his decision, at least in large measure, on economic comparisons. And today, the engineer usually finds that he has to choose between several modes, including slurry pipelines. For the purpose of an initial economic screening, it is not necessary to go deeply into the technical details of a slurry system. What is usually needed, however, is a method with which the engineer can make a quick economic assessment to determine whether a slurry pipeline should be included in the detailed final analysis. This paper presents a rapid method for making such a preliminary appraisal. Experience with commercial slurry pipeline systems in several countries and with a variety of solid materials has shown that if several assumptions pertaining to critical design variables are made, it is possible to roughly estimate the transportation cost of a slurry system on the basis of only three factors: the specific gravity of the solid material, the length of the system, and the quantity of slurry to be pumped each year. It is assumed that conditions pertaining to field construction, corrosion inhibition, and the like, will be favorable. This assumption is critical because any factor which analysis shows to be particularly unfavorable will raise the total transportation cost estimate which this paper establishes. If the engineer employs this estimating procedure and decides that the use of a slurry pipeline is economically unattractive, his chances of being wrong are small. Conversely, if his quick appraisal indicates that the use of a slurry system is economically favorable, the engineer is justified in committing the time and money needed to make a more detailed investigation of the slurry pipeline potential.

The process design of a metallurgical plant follows logical steps, one built on another, to define the circuit requirements. The methodology used and documentation produced is the same for a pre-feasibility study, feasibility study or a complete design, regardless of the process complexity or the commodity. The only difference is the amount of detail developed at each stage. SRK Consulting, an independent, international consulting practice that provides focused advice and solutions to clients, mainly from earth and water resource industries, has consulted on many mining projects around the world. The company was formed in 1974 and now employs more than 1,600 professionals in more than 50 offices on six continents. According to SRK experts, the first element in plant design is collecting metallurgical testwork or operating data from an existing plant. The testwork identifies the process, the metallurgical recoveries and product qualities and establishes the process parameters for economic recovery of the commodity. Test samples must represent both the whole orebody and the feed over the life of the mine, showing the mineral?s variability. With this data available, the process design can be developed.

This paper compares the covariance and multiquadric functions in some mining and geological applications. The basic principals of the two techniques are covered briefly. Similarities and dissimilarities of the covariance and multiquadric functions are discussed geometrically, mathematically and practically. A 14 km2 x 16 km2 area in Baharia Oasis, Western Desert of Egypt, was selected for a detailed comparative test. The gravity anomalies of 48 test stations were computed by using the data of 63 control stations. The results indicated that the covariance function is quite better than the multiquadric one. On the other hand, the multiquadric function is simpler in computation than the covariance, which requires precalculations such as semivariogram and covariogram. Moreover, multiquadric equations are based on geometric and physical considerations rather than covariance functions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. The paper presents theoretical and practical aspects of directed adjustment of physicochemical properties (pH,Eh) and ion composition of recycle and mine water by electrochemical treatment. Treatment is run in the conditioners of diaphragm-type with production of alkaline catholyte of pH value up to 12 and acidic anolyte of pH up to 2. In process of water electrolysis the directed motion of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions is observed from anode volume to cathode one, were they precipitate as hydroxides and carbonates; it leads to decrease of salt content in anolyte and catholyte. The anolyte has been concentrating anions, it is being saturated with oxygen, which reaches 20-35 mg/L. The results of experimental and industrial testing of electrochemical technique for mine and recycle water in flotation of diamond-containing and sulphide-scheelite, hematite, phosporite, apatite-nephelite, bauxite ores indicated the increase of recovery up to 2-1 5% and grade up to 0,5-2%, concurrent with decrease of reagent consumption from 15 to 50 %. The US Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67% copper and with a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5% P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88% of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9% copper at a rate seven times, faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate four times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80% of the phosphate in a 16.9% P2O5 concentrate.

Martin County Coal Corp. is located in Martin County, KY, in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The company's total leasehold covers more then 133.5 km' (33,000 acres). Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corp. is currently 2.2 Mt (2.5 million st). In certain years, though, it exceeded 2.7 Mt (3 million st). About 45% of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal's work schedule consists of two nine-hour shifts a day, 240 days a year. Topography The topography of the area is characterized by rugged hills and ridges and sharp V-shaped valleys demonstrating a cliff and slope topography. This topography consists of alternating benches of outcrop sandstone and slopes. The deep valleys have been carved out by many small streams in the area. These streams are contained within the steep slopes of narrow, twisted mountain ridges. The ridges are underlain by massive sandstones that, being resistant to erosion, create sharp, rocky morphology. The height of the hills above the valley floors ranges from 122 to 244 m (400 to 800 ft).

Concrete pump is commonly used to transport paste and high-density backfill over relatively long horizontal distances. However, since the investment in concrete-pump and its operating cost are quite high, the application of paste backfill is limited in China. For seeking an alternative paste backfill technology, squeezed-transport technique and equipment has been developed. The new technology has been adopted at Tonglushan Copper Mine of Daye Nonferrous Metals Corp for overcoming a difficulty of long-distance transportation of high-density cemented tailings fill. It proved to be an alternative paste backfill method with simple backfill system, saving investment and low operating costs.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100,B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, andTi-500.

This paper presents the case history of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation for the Crosstown Transport Facility, a 10,880 m long, 3.2 m diameter pressure tunnel proposed for construction in San Francisco, California. The proposed tunnel would be part of the City and County of San Francisco&apos;s Clean Water Program, and its purpose would be to convey stormwater and sewage from the east side of the City to the Pacific Ocean. Tunneling conditions were defined by surface geologic mapping, 94 exploratory borings, surface and borehole geophysics, aquifer testing, Goodman Jack testing, pressuremeter testing, and laboratory testing. Through the use of advanced coring techniques and a strictly controlled drilling fluid system, core recovery averaged 90 percent in the sheared and fractured rock of the Franciscan Formation. As a result, over 1,400 linear meters of rock core was recovered and is available for examination.

The results of a previous basic study of the flow and design characteristics of the hydrocyclone has shown that a recovery as high as 99% with a product rating of 0.95 can be achieved on a "batch?2 basis with a single, water-only cyclone if it is configured properly. The next logical step was to demonstrate continuous processing of gob for the efficient recovery of coal by means of a laboratory-size demonstration system. A project to design and construct such a single-cyclone system was also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. A recovery of 93% with a product rating of 0.89 was demonstrated. The system design and the data taken are discussed.

Twin-bore tunnels with a single track in each tunnel are currently the most common subway tunnel configuration. However, a large diameter single-bore tunnel with two tracks separated by a center wall could replace twin-bore tunnels and introduce potential benefits but require necessary modifications to the subway system. In particular, a nominal 40-foot-diameter single-bore tunnel can be considered in lieu of nominal 20-foot-diameter twin-bore tunnels. This paper discusses the benefits and modifications introduced by replacing twin-bore tunnels with a single-bore tunnel, with respect to various elements of the subway related to the tunnel, stations, track, and tunnel systems.

Ground freezing was chosen as an initial support method during construction of two deep shafts at the Mill Creek project. The Mill Creek, Phase 2 tunnel (MCT-2) is utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from the member communities in the greater Cleveland area. The main objective of groundfreezing was to provide a strong support structure to resist soil and groundwater pressures. This was achieved by creating a watertight, frozen-ground barrier around the shaft perimeter. The paper will provide an overview of ground freezing techniques applied during the construction of two shafts, each 250-feet deep.

Current mine development requires the safe, &apos;expedient, economical construction of vertical shafts for ventilation and access in diverse ground conditions. Advancements in large diameter shaft drilling have lead to exceptional mechanical refinements of shaft drilling technology. The author traces the history of the equipment and methods employed by the large diameter shaft drilling industry and explores likely paths of future development. A few case histories are cited to illustrate the adaptability of shaft drilling as a versatile tool for advanced worldwide mining operations. Safety, schedules, cost, environmental impact, and capability are discussed to assist the mining engineer in the investigation of feasible projects.
