A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on the pressure oxidation (POx) pretreatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pretreatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperatures. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. "The Cityringen project foresees the construction of a new circular metro line in and around the city center of Copenhagen. Both drives, the north and the south one, required the TBMs to be equipped in order to cope with contaminated water table and soil. The north drive mined in water contaminated with chlorinated compounds, including chloroform and vinyl chloride, while the south TBMs excavated in a highly benzene contaminated area, becoming the first TBMs to complete such a challenge. Despite the pollution and the stricter operative procedures, the production has been extremely successful with record up to 520 m in one month and 32 m in one day. 1 INTRODUCTION The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line. The 15 km long twin tunnels will form a new circular line with 21 new stations (17 + 4 crossovers). When finished it will interchange with the existing metro, rail and bus infrastructure at key locations around town, taking 90% of Copenhagen citizen at less the 600m from a metro station (Figure 1). The Contract has been awarded in April 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Tunnels are being excavated with 4 Seli-Kawasaki EPB TBMs, two of which manufactured in Denmark by Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, which is also operating them. At the moment this article is written 50% of the tunnels have been completed and over 40% handed over for the electromechanical works. Seli Tunnelling Denmark is a Danish company constituted in 2012 as a subsidiary of Seli SpA for this project and subsequently acquired by the Salini Impregilo Group in 2015."

Bentonite represents one of the main players in the stability of the drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution affect the physical properties of the drilling mud especially the rheological properties. Therefore, a specific particle size distribution was recommended by American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in drilling mud. To clarify the effect of individual size and size distribution, in this study, the bentonite sample was classified into different size fractions. Each size fraction was tested separately in terms of controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness, and packing density. The effect of each size fraction on the rheological properties of the suspension was correlated to the behavior of the whole particle size distribution in the bentonite sample. The results indicate that the coarser the particles, the higher the rheological properties; in this case, the API mixture is the highest. The filtration loss and cake thickness for the API mixture are lower than that of the individual size fractions due to its wider size distribution due to the filling of voids between larger particles with smaller ones, which lead to bed compaction and consequently lower fluid loss and cake thickness.

The Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is replacing its aging Pleasure Bay Interceptor (PBI) with a new 54-in interceptor in a 3,250-foot long 8 to 10-foot diameter tunnel and a new 50-mgd main pump station (MPS). A comprehensive phased geotechnical investigation was performed, including SPTs, CPTs and geophysics. A channel filled with soft marine sediments was identified. The tunnel is set in stiff to hard marine soil to enable using a less expensive open-face TBM. The thickness of tunnel cover under the channel is optimized through numerical analyses to avoid a deeper pump station yet maintaining tunnel stability with controlling seepage.

Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of nickel ore, with its nickel laterite resources mainly distributed in the Moluccas and Sulawesi regions. However, there is scant research on the mineralogical characteristics of nickel laterite deposited in southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study aims to investigate the mineral phase structure, chemical analysis, thermal properties and element distribution characteristics of the middle and lower part of the rotten rock zone located in the southeast Sulawesi ophiolite belt.

The floor-heave and no-floor-heave phenomena at a western U.S. coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria. Although the previous numerical study using FLAC3D very reasonably demonstrated these phenomena, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. As a result, the latter models predicted floor heave that agreed with relative amounts of observed heave from each gateroad system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

Uranium is an element incompatible with respect to the major rock-forming minerals crystallizing from granitic magma, entering in- stead trace minerals such as zircon. The relationship between the saturation limit (SL) for such a mineral and the bulk distribution coefficient (Do) for U is central to understanding the distribution of U and its availability to late- stage fluids which can form ore deposits directly, or labile U which can be remobilized later. Low SL values imply early crystallization of zircon, but in very small proportions, minimizing Do and maximizing the degree of enrichment of U in late-stage fluids. Thus, granitic rocks with low Zr contents (due to a low saturation limit for zircon) are most likely to evolve U- enriched differentiates; this will be reflected in a high U content of the zircons (but not necessarily high U abundances in whole-rocks). Thus, the ratio of the U content of zircon to the Zr content of the corresponding whole-rock is potentially a very useful parameter in identifying granitic rocks which are most likely to have U-enriched solutions associated with them. The granitic rocks associated with the U deposits of the Midnite Mine area, Washington, have geochemical characteristics which fit very well the model presented here. The rocks are very low in Zr (100 ppm) and contain zircons with extremely high U contents (3,000-4,000 ppm).

SELENIUM AND tellurium are by-products of electrolytic copper refining. Copper anodes contain 0.01-0.2 % Se and up to 0.04 % Te; during electrolysis these deposit as a slime at the bottom of the cell. Such slimes contain 2-15% Se and 0.5-8 % Te, as selenides and tellurides of gold, silver, and copper. The following compounds have been identified in the slimes: (Ag, Au)Te2, Ag2Se, Ag2Te, CuAgSe, Cu2Se, Cu2Te. Anodic slimes from copper electro¬lytic refining are a grayish black powder, minus 200 mesh. When this complex mixture is decomposed in an acid medium, elemental selenium and tellurium can be obtained, while in an alkaline medium, both metals go into solution. Acid leaching The slime is charged in acid digesters of 800-900 lb capacity, heated to 260°C with 78 % H2SO4, for 8-12 hr. During digestion the following reactions take place:

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

At a time when the US mining industry is struggling to emerge from a lengthy recession, the burden of new, unnecessary regulations could shorten the life of, or be fatal to many domestic mining companies. The possibility of new restrictions on the use of diesel equipment operating in underground mines is one example of unnecessary regulations. These could cause serious harm to the economic health of many mining companies. Whether future health-related Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations restricting the use of diesel equipment are unnecessary, depends on whether these restrictions are supported by fact or created in a political environment. The mining industry has benefited from the use of diesel equipment in underground metal-non-metal and coal mines for more than 50 years. Since first introduce to underground mines in the early 1940s, the use of diesel equipment has grown in numbers and size. During this time, the mining industry in America has achieved much higher productivity rates and improved safety. Although all these gains cannot be attributed to the greater use of diesel equipment, a high percentage can be. I began my professional mining ca¬reer in 1970 working in the Missouri lead mines. At that time, the use of diesel equipment was well established in metal-non-metal mines throughout the United States and many parts of the world. As director of mining research for St. Joe Minerals Corp. (now The Doe Run Co.), I was involved in research to improve mining productivity and safety. This involved investigating the better and safer use of existing or new mining methods, products, equipment and people. Within this group, diesel equipment had the single largest positive impact.

Borehole mining, as a viable concept for recovering deep sedimentary mineral resources, historically has been long on promise but short on results. Application of the technology seems best suited for recovery of Miocene phosphate resources on the East Coast of the US. These deposits are potentially enormous in scope and underlie sections of the coastal plain and the near offshore continental shelf. The landside portion of these deposits is generally too deep to mine using conventional open pit methods. Recovery of these minerals requires development of alternative mining systems. A significant proportion of the offshore resources appear to occur at depths below the practical limits of cutter suction dredges and may even exceed the limits of bucket ladder dredges. In most cases, these deposits are covered by overburden that must he removed and redeposited before the mineral section can be mined. The depth, thickness, composition of overburden and environmental sensitivity of a particular location would greatly impact mining system selection. It is probable that dredging would not be an environmentally acceptable mining method in many of the areas underlain by this phosphate rock. In cases such as these, new processes such as borehole mining must be evolved or the resource will remain undeveloped. A borehole mining test program, using an existing prototype borehole system, successfully extracted Miocene phosphate in northeast Florida in 1984-1985. The top of the main mineral zone was 80 m (261 ft) below the surface. Based on the results of this test program. plus subsequent laboratory testing and engineering studies, a new prototype borehole mining system was designed in 1986. This design incorporated several innovations of offering potentially higher productivity and lower power consumption than was achieved with the previous test unit. Economic restraints at that tine prevented the actual construction and testing of this new design.

Plant testing of DuPont's Activator Technology in the vat leach circuit of the Homestake mine shows increased gold recoveries of 3-5%. Activators are catalysts of gold dissolution in cyanide solution. DuPont received the patent for this technology in January, 1996. The test was run in the west sand plant alternating control and activated vats to reduce the variability in head grade and cyanide consumption. Activated vats had gold in the preg solutions earlier, higher gold recovery, and lower gold residuals. Activator addition did not adversely affect mill operations or the environment. Optimization of the technology continues.

Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been consuming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from conventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "unconventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support industry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas-bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. By developing reliable resource characterization techniques and applying effective stimulation technologies we intend to elevate the Devonian shale from the status of a potential gas resource to that of a proven gas reserve. Once we have done this the private sector can take over the large-scale commercial development of the Devonian shale gas resource. WGSP The second largest project (both in terms of complexity and level of funding) is the WGSP. The primary targets for this project are the low permeability (< 1 md) gas sandstones of the Piceance, Uintah, and Greater Green River basins and the Northern Great Plains Province. Project success in these four primary geologic locales will permit investigating additional low permeability sandstones in 16 other sedimentary basins. It appears that the only practical means of increasing permeability and resultant flow rates from these sandstones lies in the use of massive hydraulic fracturing techniques. This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program conducted to characterize the moment-rotation behavior of skewed flat radial joints from large diameter (45 ft) tunnel lining. Both positive and negative joint moment-rotation behaviors were measured experimentally using two-segment joint combination assemblies. The results are compared to closed form methodologies used by designers, e.g., the Janssen method. The differences in observed and model behavior are discussed within the context of design practice.

The goal of the U.S. nuclear waste management program is to provide assurance that existing and future nuclear waste from military and civilian activities, including spent fuel from the once-through nuclear power cycle, can be isolated from the biosphere so as to pose no significant threat to public health and safety. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for defining and implementing this national waste management effort. The Environ- mental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) are responsible for providing a framework of criteria, standards, and regulations that will assure that the disposal methods developed by DOE are consistent with the achievement of the goal of safe, long-term waste isolation. Within DOE, the responsibility for implementation of the national waste management program rests with the Office of Nuclear Waste Management. The nuclear waste management effort involves three major activities: The Defense Waste Management Program, the Spent Fuel Storage Program and the Commercial Waste Management Program. The major programmatic effort in the Commercial Waste Management Program is the National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation on the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). 

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.
