This paper provides a brief look at a proposed short-longwall for coal, development. The proposed method is an attempt to realize the advantages of longwall mining in deposits that, historically, would only be minable by continuous mining methods. An overview of the proposed layout, development requirements, production rate, ventilation scheme and other associated features is provided. This mining method could help operators in above-drainage seams where minable areas are smaller. It may also have application in areas that are peppered with gas wells and in environmentally sensitive areas which preclude the use of conventional longwalls.

Valuations can be molded, twisted and misinterpreted. Cases of spurious scope setting; limits to the information or access by the valuer; difficulties with the lack of comparative valuations; inappropriate valuation methods and outright speculations are described. None should be accepted by an experienced, independent minerals valuer. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (TheAusIMM) is working on a Valmin Code for which a Manual of Best Practice and Valuation Guidelines may be developed.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. A kinetic model for batch leaching of various metals with different lixiviants has been developed. Overall material balances for reactants and products at the solid/liquid interface were formulated with various types of heterogeneous reactions in place at the interface. The solutions to these mass balances have been identified analytically as well as numerically using a Runge-Kutta method. Applications of these numerical solutions to various leaching systems using the rotating disc or powders have been discussed. Examples of the metal dissolution systems considered in this study include cobalt, nickel, copper and gold in acid, cyanide or ammoniacal solutions.

The primary method of slope stabilization is ground water-control. Recent research has established the properties which slope materials must exhibit in order for stabilization measures to be feasible, but there is little guidance in the literature about suitable field tests to develop the parameters needed for this evaluation. This paper presents a proven method for large scale testing which allows an evaluation of the feasibility of ground water pressure control in a reasonable cost and time frame. Methods of performance and analysis of the test are presented, and the method is illustrated by reference to case examples.

As a follow-up to a laboratory study, a pilot scale column for the flotation of coarse particles was designed and then tested in two different applications. In the first test, the concentration of a coarse phosphate ore (normally beneficiated by skin flotation in spirals) was carried out in a flotation plant in Florida. In the second pilot test, the column was used as a scavenger cell in the coarse flotation section of a potash beneficiation plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. Particle size of the phosphate feed was of the order of 0.6-1.0 mm and the potash feed 1-3 mm. The column was 1 feet diameter and was fed at rates between 0.5 to 1.4 tph. The effect of operating variables such as air and water flow rates, bubble size, frother concentration, residence time, sparger, etc were evaluated. The most important factors in column performance were found to be bubble size, air flow rate and the thickness of the froth bed. Best results were obtained in the absence of a froth bed, with low air flow rates and with small bubbles. The paper presents comparative performance and discusses details of the column design. Phosphate recoveries in the column were better than 90% whereas the conventional skin flotation circuit normally yields about 60% recovery for a comparable concentrate grade. Potash recovery from the tailings of the conventional flotation circuit was as high as 42% recovery. Particle size distribution of the potash concentrate was coarse enough to meet requirements for potash fertilizer.

Before the development of the underground stoping and mining costs can be considered, certain facts about the ore body, the proposed mine, markets, etc., must be known or determined. In the case to be studied, the zinc-lead mineralization occurred with a narrow vertically dipping structure of undetermined length and vertical extent. Exploration completed to date has revealed 6.5 mil¬lion st t of proven reserves. A further 820,000 st of in¬dicated reserves has been outlined and this tonnage is considered capable of being expanded by a factor of approximately four after more detailed drilling. After studying the market conditions and completing a very preliminary feasibility study, it was decided that production would be 730,000 stpy (or 2000 stpd) of ore. First year production would be at the rate of 1500 stpd. The main design criteria for the selection of the min¬ing methods are minimizing surface subsidence, maxi¬mum recovery of the ore body, maximum degree of grade control, maximum productivity, and safe working conditions. Two basic extraction systems are considered capable of meeting these requirements: mechanized cut¬and-fill stoping and sublevel long-hole stoping with filling. The primary development system of the mine has been designed to give maximum flexibility in stoping systems and layout and to permit changes if considered necessary as a consequence of actual production ex¬perience. At the present time, access to the mine is by a circu¬lar concrete lined vertical shaft, 16 ft diam, sunk to a depth of 1380 ft. Two exploration levels have been driven within the ore zone at depths of 165 and 1246 ft below the surface outcrop. The development to date had the objective of sampling the mineralization and produc¬ing detailed information on the outline of the ore body and the distribution and controls of zinc and lead values. In an attempt to satisfy the basic design criteria for the mine, it was decided that production would be best achieved by a combination of 40% sublevel long-hole stoping and 60% cut-and-fill mining. Costs of exploration and capital development of per¬manent underground facilities are normally written off over the life of a mine. Production expenditures, on the other hand, are of a temporary nature and are normally charged as and when incurred as an operating expense. Reasonably accurate predictions of mine production costs can be built up from engineering design and estimates of individual mine activities for ultimate inclusion in the comprehen¬sive data required for financial decision making. The simulated operations can be costed on a detailed basis in the form of a monthly operating budget. The budget format can be generalized or detailed, depending upon the scope of the project. However, ex¬perience suggests that a fairly detailed format has the advantage of assuring that all significant cost items are included. For underground costing it is suggested that the budget structure include five major cost centers (i.e. development, diamond drilling, ore extraction, hoisting/ transportation, and general mine expense). These in turn are detailed under numerous subheadings. The mechanism for compiling an operating budget will be illustrated. Because of its relative simplicity, ore extraction under sublevel long-hole stoping has been chosen for illustration. All other activities, simple or complex, can be estimated in similar fashion. BLOCK AND STOPE DEVELOPMENT Long-hole blocks, used where advantageous, will be up to 250 ft in height, depending upon the vertical con¬tinuity of the mineralization, and approximately 300 ft long. Drawpoints will be at 36-ft intervals and serviced by loading crosscuts driven from a footwall drift parallel to and close to the ore zone. Pillars between the stopes will be 50 ft wide. Stopes will be drilled off with vertical rings of blastholes drilled from sublevels approximately 60 ft apart vertically. This drilling will be done by percussion drilling machines (31/2 in.) mounted on a trackless drilling rig. Load¬haul-dump (LHD) equipment will be used to move broken ore from the drawpoints to the orepass connecting to rail haulage systems. On completion, long-hole stopes will be backfilled to prevent caving and to facili¬tate later pillar removal. From a planned stope layout, a forecast of produc¬tion and development is made in Table 1. Table 1. To be competitive in automotive applications, polymer composites must be processable by high production rate processes like injection molding (IM), reaction injection molding (RIM), structural rim (SRIM) and compression molding. With current fiber reinforced composite materials, performance properties are sometimes compromised to make them compatible with these processes. This is done by decreasing the amount and length of the reinforcing fiber and the viscosity and molecular weight of the polymer matrix. Sheet molding composite (SMC) and thermoplastic polymer blends are examples of polymer composites which are cost effective in many applications and meet the high speed processing requirements for automotive parts.

The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

Many Third World African countries are well-endowed with minerals - especially gold and diamonds - while only a few have important base metal deposits. For decades since colonial rule, political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital. Influence from Soviet Bloc countries, however, has declined with the move toward multi-party rule. And the left wing orientation, once widely favored by Third World African countries, has almost disappeared. With International Monetary Fund (IMF) encouragement, these Third World African countries now encourage representational government and solicit western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The North American mining industry is following the same trail as other capital intensive industries and looking abroad for opportunities. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada released figures that show exploration expenditures in that country were halved between 1987 and 1990. Figures for the United States are not so easily found but every indication points to a downward trend. While total annual expenditures on US exploration by corporations as a group are either declining or remaining constant, expenditures away from North America is increasing. Gold exploration expenditures in 1991 by the major companies tracked by Minerals Economics Group were less in the United States than for Latin America and the Southwest Pacific combined. The same study showed as much was spent in the Republic of South Africa and "Other" areas combined as in the United States. Expenditures by major corporations in these "Other" areas amount to only 5.2% of their total budget. Third World Africa is a major component of these "Other" areas.

Airborne geochemistry became a reality with the advent of a high-sensitivity airborne gamma ray spectrometer with large volume NaI (TI) crystal detectors. Small variations in the concentration of potassium (as K40), thorium (as T1208) and uranium (as B1214) along the flight lines can be determined by measuring the gamma radiation with a sensitive airborne spectrometer. Small volume crystal spectrometers are useful only for detection of major surface uranium (Bi214) variations, but the large crystal volume system is an airborne geochemical exploration method capable of locating hydrothermal mineral deposits. Radioactivity as a guide to ore has been discussed in the literature by Damon (1950), Gross (1952) and others. The theoretical basis is that potassium, thorium, and uranium are concentrated in late stage solutions during magmatic crystallization. Thorium and uranium are concentrated in late stage liquids because their large atomic radius and high ionic charge prevent them from entering into the crystal lattice of common rock-forming minerals (Rankama and Sahama, 1950). Potassium, which has a large ionic radius and small charge, also can be concentrated in the high water content late stage fluids (Heier and Adams, 1964). A large proportion of uranium and thorium in rocks occurs around grain boundaries of the essential rock-forming minerals (Hurley, 1950). Uranium and thorium substitute for zirconium in zircon, a comparatively early forming mineral. However, most of the thorium and uranium is concentrated in residuals where they can be fractionated and incorporated into allanite, monazite, xenotime, and other minerals.

Microprocessor technology has revolutionized the business community by placing tremendous computing power in the hands of the end-user for a very inexpensive price tag. The range of applications covers process control, to office automation, to personal computing capabilities. With the influx of this new technology, which these systems have to offer, also comes some unique operational and control considerations. But before we address these items, let us lay a foundation of common terms to be used throughout this presentation. Due to the rapid advances in microprocessor technology, where a new generation of computers is announced every two or three years, it becomes difficult to define a microprocessor system and have it valid for an extended period of time! Therefore, for this presentation, we will be dealing with a subset of microprocessors called Personal Computers or PC's. At the heart of a PC is a Central Processing Unit or CPU. The CPU performs the actual program and command execution. The programs dealing with driving the various peripheral equipment is referred to as the Operating System (for example: DOS : Disk Operating System, CP/M - Control Program/Microcomputers, etc.). The CPU is normally housed in an enclosure which contains power regulators, peripheral equipment interfacing 'cards', and expansion 'slots' to enlarge the capabilities of the PC system.

Mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be a significant source of fine, respirable dust. About 25 percent of the mass fraction of tailings from a hard-rock mine consists of particles of a respirable size (smaller than 10 μm) [1]. This dust poses concerns, especially for nearby communities, because of its detrimental impact on respiratory health. Respirable tailings dust, primarily composed of quartz or free silica (SiO2), may cause silicosis, chronic pulmonary disease, bronchitis, collagen vascular diseases, and chronic granulomatous infections [2].

The word "line" has been used loosely for many forms of the common steel plant flux. For example, many people use the word "lime" for nigh calcium and dolomitic limestone, for high calcium and dolomitic quicklime (also called caustic lime, calcined lime; burnt lime, pulverized and pebble lime) and ;van for clinkered dolomite. Calcium hydroxide, also called slaked lime and hydrated lime, is called "lime" but is seldom used as a flux except when the quicklime air slakes in open boxes or bins. All of the above forms of "lime" are used in the steel plant. Calcium hydroxide is used for water treatment, acid neutralizing, and as a lubricant for wire drawing. All the other limes are used as fluxes in the sintering plant, blast furnace or steel producing furnaces. In the production of self-flux or super-flux sinter, high calcium and dolomitic limestone fines are used. Where quicklime fines are available, they may be added to the sinter mix also. The blast furnace uses both high calcium and/or dolomitic limestone. A few trials have been made using iron oxide stabilized dolomitic lime in an attempt to reduce coke consumption and to increase the production rate. The trials were very successful but would' not be economical, except in periods of coke shortages, with resulting extremely high coke cost and exceptionally high hot metal demand.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies to evaluate dust control technologies on deep cut continuous mining sections. These surveys have been conducted in different mines using various mining methods, face ventilation systems and dust control systems. The surveys typically consist of respirable dust sampling combined with a time study of mining activities. Measurements of dust control and operational parameters are also made. Critical elements identified for controlling respirable dust in deep cut mining systems include controlling intake dust, dust collector capacity, face ventilation quantities and velocities, positioning of workers, work practices and selection of equipment. This paper discusses how the dust surveys are conducted in deep cut mining sections and how these surveys are used to identify specific dust generating sources.

The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.

The marine geologist and coastal engineer have at their disposal a wide variety of geophysical tools with which to investi¬gate sea floor topography and structure. Such devices include towed magnetometers, shipboard gravimeters and a variety of acoustical systems for recording the relief of the sea floor and buried structural features. The versatility of this latter group of systems lends itself to a variety of applications essential to those projects where excava¬tion of the sea floor is required. This paper describes the use of several acoustic devices and their Limitations and presents a case history in which a rapid survey from a small vessel provided detailed information critical to the planning stage of a specific coastal project. In this discussion, shallow water is defined as depths less than 150 feet. At present, this limit includes the maximum depth of economic dredging and most other offshore activities. To be sure, the maximum depth at which routine useful work can be accomplished is rapidly increasing, but the majority of current marine activities are located in water depths here defined as shallow.

The advantage of using a clean coal as a feedstock in a direct liquefaction plant is improved performance of the plant by several factors e.g., increased throughput of coal; reduced wear and tear of valves, pipes, and pumps; increased liquid yields, etc. This paper examines the technical feasibility for cleaning Illinois #6 coal as a feedstock to a direct coal liquefaction plant via selective agglomeration using a coal-derived heavy distillate, Wilsonville V-1074 as agglomerant. Effects of addition of Kerosene or coal-derived Naphtha as conditioner, coal particle size, slurry pH, oil to coal ratio, and operating temperature on ash reduction and clean coal weight recovery have been studied. Results show that about 70% of the ash can be removed from this coal and the clean coal weight recovery over 85% can be achieved by using this technique with suitable selection of coal particle size, slurry pH, mixing intensity and oil to coal ratio.

Planning the development of the Quartz Hill molybdenum open pit mine in Southeast Alaska required a number of special considerations. Located in mountainous glaciated terrain, about 3.8 m (150 in.) of annual precipitation (with annual snowfall over 10.2 m (400 :in.) was a primary consideration. Mine planning included muskeg and snow removal, avalanche control, clearing timber, water quality control, dust control, seismicity, mine schedule, work force and reclamation. Quartz Hill is in an environmentally sensitive area which has required extensive environmental baseline data collection, four Environmental Impact statements (EIS) and a large number of permits.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface.
