During the past decade, international mining companies have descended on South America. Countries like Chile, Brazil and Peru have seen billions of dollars in exploration and development funding turn their once meager mineral industries into mining giants that have become the envy of the world. Part of this outpouring of foreign investment in those countries has been because each has privatized its state-owned mining companies and has liberalized its foreign investment laws. In addition, they have rewritten their mining codes to encourage minerals development and passed new tax laws that have made natural resource development more attractive. Now these same international mining companies are turning their attention to Argentina. This a country that, like Chile, Brazil and Peru, has a wealth of largely un- tapped mineral resources. And Argentina wants its share of the foreign investment that its neighbors have enjoyed. With that in mind, ministers of Argentina's natural resource agencies came to Denver, CO to meet with mining executives and pitch their country's mining industry. The meeting, attended by about 200 people, was sponsored by the US Trade and Development Agency and organized by the World Trade Center Denver. Others involved were the Colorado Mining Association, the Colorado International Trade Office and the Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Mining of Argentina. The following is a summary of a report on Argentina's mining industry. It was prepared by Anderson & Schwab Management Consultants and distributed to attendees as part of the meeting's program.

Breakage of rock by machine is one of the major methods of excavation. With the development of modern engineering techniques, the advantages of using this method have become even greater. Improving efficiency and reducing the cost of rock breakage is the main goal of mechanizing the rock-breaking operation. For a given stratum, the efficiency of a machine excavation depends, to a large extent, on the design and method of application of the tools used. In a planetary cutter head, the subcutter heads move like planets around the main drive shaft. The general structure of the cutter head is shown in Fig. 1. As shown in this illustration, the main drive shaft (1-1) is connected to the tie bar (1) and, thereby, to a gear(5) that meshes with a fixed-gear ring(2). The subcutter head (4) is rigidly connected to the gear (5) by the subcutter-head axis (2-2). When the main drive shaft (1-1) rotates, the subcutter head (4) rotates around the axis (2-2), under the action of the tie bar and with the help of sleeve pipe (3).At the same time, axis (2-2) also rotates around the main shaft (1-1). A variety of mathematical techniques are available in the pertinent literature concerning the interpretation and reduction of aeromagnetic data. The quantitative methods applicable to this data en¬compass a wide spectrum including filtering, continuation, derivatives, reduction to the poles, spectral analysis, and "undraping" of flight line data. With the aid of the digital computer, the techniques listed, and others, can be computationally performed on a gridded data set. In addition, current sophisticated computer hardware permits the systems analyst greater latitude in the storage and retrieval of data and in the display of resultant naps on a digital x-y plotter than previously available. Although many interpretive techniques concerning magnetic data have been published and computer machinery has been on the market, little has been written incorporating both disciplines into a unified digital processing system. In the present paper, a general purpose system in given which in designed for routine use in the interpretation of aeromagnetic (and other potential field, etc.) maps.

The 79th Street Water Tunnel Extension Project was initially designed by the City of Chicago, Department of Public Works, to increase the capacity of the City’s south side water distribution system. MWH preformed a design review, prepared the final design and provided construction management for the City of Chicago Department of Water. Construction commenced in September 1995 and was completed in October 1999. The Project connected two existing water tunnels with a new 5.8 km (19,044 ft.) long, 4.9 m (16.08 ft.) finished diameter concrete lined rock tunnel utilizing TBM, drill-blast and mechanical hoe-ramming methods. In addition, approximately 61 meters(200 feet) of concrete lined variable cross section tunnel, a new gate shaft and a temporary construction shaft were constructed. This paper describes the construction of these features and the geological conditions encountered.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed a laboratory evaluation of exhaust emissions from a diesel engine using an oxygenated diesel fuel. The fuels tested were soy methyl esters in a neat (100%) form and low sulfur, petroleum number 2 diesel fuel (D2). The engine tested was a Caterpillar 3304, indirect injection, naturally aspirated, 75 kW, diesel engine that is typical of engines used in underground mining applications. The objective was to determine the extent to which oxygenated fuels, such as methyl esters, reduce diesel particulate matter (DPM), and their influence on upon gaseous emissions such as total hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NO2, formaldehyde, and other exhaust emissions. Heavy- and light-duty transient tests were used to simulate load cycles typical of mine applications. The soy methyl ester fuel produced greater amounts of volatile DPM (organic material) but much less nonvolatile DPM (carbon soot) for overall DPM reductions. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) typical of the type commonly used in metal and nonmetal mines was tested with both fuels. The DOC further reduced the volatile and total DPM when used with the soy methyl esters, but increased the total DPM for D2 due to sulfate formation. The soy methyl ester fuel reduced CO and hydrocarbon, and NOx emissions. The DOC further reduced CO and hydrocarbon emissions.

Geological domain modeling is an important step in mineral resources evaluation. The procedure can be laborious and time-consuming, especially in multivariate settings. However, estimates are significantly improved when carefully limited by geological variables. This paper proposes a workflow for geological domain modeling suited for stratigraphic deposits. The workflow consists in automatically defining the domains by using clustering algorithms, generating the surfaces that represent the contacts by interpolation and subsequent triangulation, and simulating the surfaces. The proposed workflow produces consistent and realistic results and allows the user to test different domain configurations and assess volumetric uncertainty automatically and quickly.

Underground coal mining machinery utilizes portable electric sables, "trailing cables." to obtain power from load centers or distribution boxes. Cables are frequently damaged since mobile equipment, poor lighting, and restricted space are inherent to coal mining operations. Normally, the damage is repaired by splicing--the joining of one or more severed conductors and replacing insulation and jacket. Figure 1 illustrates a typical single conductor splice. Although the repair seems simple, difficulty of the splicing process is exemplified by the many safety hazards and frequent production delays that result from defective splices. Forty-two cable splice related injuries were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, 17 splices related fires were reported in the three year period prior to December 1972. Assuming the damaged area is quickly located, an average splice time for a two conductor cable is twenty minutes. Some operators estimate this delay is incurred once per day per operating section. If one ton per minute is averaged throughout the shift, each unit could loose 4800 tons per year from splice delays. An estimated cost for materials and labor to make a splice is $20. The expenditure could result in a $4800 annual cost per section. The estimated expense does not include wages of other personnel waiting for the repair to be completed. Nevertheless, labor and materials cost is minor compared to the income lost from decreased production.

Introduction The 150 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this article is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to burn low ranking coals or coal wastes. These include anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash-plant-waste slurries. This article also addresses the impact of fuel characteristics on plant design. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements. The uncertain economic environment in which utilities must now operate has shifted the industry's interest away from large, base-loaded generating units to small, more versatile installations. Utilities now consider purchasing new generating capacity in smaller increments and staging its deployment to correspond with demand increases. In this way, they lower their risk in the increasingly hazardous art of long-range load forecasting. This strategy has many advantages. Multiple, smaller units have inherently greater turndown capability and better availability than a single larger unit of the same size. In addition, the smaller units will each have better cycling capability. And, with CFB combustion, the smaller units will have greater fuel flexibility. General plant description The 150 MW powerplant described here is a grassroots CFB unit. Fluidized bed technology differs from conventional combustion techniques. With CFB, solid fuel, together with inert material such as sand, gypsum, limestone, or ash from the fuel, is kept suspended in the combustion chamber. This is done by using the action of the fluidizing air distributed below the bed. Fluidization promotes the turbulent mixing conditions required for good combustion. The turbulence causes the entire mass of solids to behave like a liquid. The result is improved mixing. This allows heat to be generated at a lower and more uniformly distributed temperature that is below the ash fusion temperature of most coals. The fluidizing mechanism offers several other advantages over conventional combustion. There is less volatilization of alkali compounds, which cause deposits on boiler tube surfaces. And there is less sensitivity to the quantity and nature of the ash in the fuel. The low combustion temperatures prevent vitrification of the ash particles and minimize problems associated with furnace slagging. The ability to select from many fuels is one of the major advantages of CFB combustor technology. Fuels that can be burned in CFB plants to produce steam and electricity include: low grade coals with high ash or sulfur, lignite, peat, wood and pulp products, biomass, refuse, anthracite culm, petroleum coke, and oil shales. The plant's turbine cycle uses superheated steam at 12.4 MPa (1800 psi) and 538°C (1000°F), with single reheat to 538°C (1000°F). Two high pressure and three low pressure, closed, feedwater heaters are furnished. So is a deaerator, which is an open, direct-contact heater. The CFB plant exceeds EPA's New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for air emissions. The design limits sulfur dioxide (SO,) emissions to 0.25 kg/GJ (0.6 lb per million Btu). As part of a program to address the long-term need to ensure adequate supplies of domestic phosphate raw materials, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has conducted considerable research on dolomitic phosphate rock beneficiation. The discovery that alkyl diphosphonic acids act as phosphate mineral depressants led to the development of several processes involving a carbonate flotation step for the effective beneficiation of these problem ores. Most recently, a partial deoiling process in which the reagent consumption is greatly reduced has been developed. The reduction is achieved because part of the initial feed is beneficiated without passing through the separate carbonate flotation step. Using this method, a phosphate product containing 30.6-30.9% P2O5 and 0.7-0.8% MgO was obtained from a Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble that contained about 23% P2O5 and 2.0% MgO. The P205 recovery was 80.8-86.5%.

INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from

A detailed investigation of the stability in cyanide solutions of native gold and gold-silver tellurides in a flotation concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, has been undertaken to assess whether leaching under different conditions can be used to quantify the distribution of Au between native gold and gold-silver tellurides, as suggested by, for example, Chryssoulis and Cabri (1990). The leaching was carried out on +20 µm native gold and gold-silver tellurides separated from a high-grade flotation concentrate and then diluted with barren quartz. The material leached assayed 270 ppm Au and 118 ppm Te and the leach conditions used were:- Stage 1: Leaching in dilute cyanide (0 .1 % ) at pH 9 .5 for 24 hours to dissolve native gold but not gold-silver tel­lurides. Stage 2: Leaching the residue from Stage 1 in strong cyanide (2%) and pH 12.5 for 96 hours to dissolve gold-silver tellurides.

Individual ball mill circuit design and operating variables can be related to overall circuit performance through two distinct parameters for classification and breakage. The ball mill circuit functional performance equation is presented. Applications in the industrial plant and in the research field are discussed.

Interpretation of the histograms, variograms, and drifts of the data in the context of depositional environment and post-depositional geological history is discussed. A multivariate geostatistical technique for checking the accuracy of seam correlations is demonstrated.

After being forgotten or ignored for nearly 100 years, the ability of bromine chemistry to extract gold from ore has been rediscovered. While bromine chemistry is similar to chlorine, there are some important differences. Bromine in its elemental form is a dense, fuming, red liquid. Elemental chlorine is a gas and requires a substantial amount of equipment to handle, store and deliver to solution. Bromine has an advantage in its ability to rapidly and completely oxidize heavy metals to water soluble halide salts. The first patent for use of bromine chemistry for gold extraction was issued in 1881 (1). By 1895, work done in Colorado concluded well roasted ores required approximately 1-1/2 lbs/ton of elemental bromine for superior extraction of metals (2)). At that time, bromine was deemed to be cost effective vs. chlorine even though it was more expensive on a pound basis than chlorine. The advent of cyanide technology virtually eliminated both chlorine and bromine from consideration for leaching of ores. Cyanide was so inexpensive that it made deposits requiring unique technologies unattractive for mining. Only since the deregulation of gold price has bromine/chlorine technology been considered for those ores not amenable to cyanide. While chlorine has found its way into the pretreatment steps, bromine is just beginning to realize its niche in the marketplace.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that uses gravitational force to mine massive, steeply dipping and deep-seated ore deposits at lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. As caving is a dynamic process, designing an effective ventilation system is challenging; therefore, estimating the airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

INTRODUCTION The term "Rapid Underground Excavation" is generally associated with high speed tunnel advance with large volumes of excavation, and indeed this is the type of work for which most of the recent innovations in methods and new machinery have been developed. However, the term applies as well to any underground excavation process that results in an earlier project completion than would be expected with conventional methods, and hopefully with a decrease in total unit excavation cost. Often significant progress has been made during the primary stages of an underground construction project and then an inordinate amount of time and effort has been expended on small units of "miscellaneous" excavation which has delayed the overall project completion and escallated overall unit costs. Construction at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission for underground testing frequently requires significant amounts of so called "miscellaneous mining" such as short access drifts, cross cuts, alcoves, niches and concrete keyways. Many of the keyways must be excavated without disturbing the rock beyond the excavation lines and construction scheduling often dictates that much of the work must be accomplished without disturbing sensitive electronic equipment already installed. As duct-fan systems push the envelope of power, length and cost, their design calls for a more comprehensive technoeconomic analysis to ensure they deliver the expected results without failure and cost overrun. This work explores the numerous factors to include in the design of an extensive (semi-)rigid duct-fan system. Besides delivering a given airflow, the system must satisfy component limitations and power constraints during its lifetime. We evaluate the assumptions underlying the positioning of in-line booster fans in a long gapless duct-fan system and propose a strategy for specifying the location and blade pitch of successive booster fans to prevent system failure due to a partial vacuum.

Computer based techniques for solving the Ultimate Pit Limit Problem have appeared in mining literature since the early 1960's. The majority of papers pertaining to this subject can be partitioned into one of two categories: discussion of the pros and cons of a particular algorithm, or a case study presenting specific applications of an algorithm. Subsequently, there has a1 so been considerable debate concerning the best techniques between, essentially, two camps: those favoring the moving cones techniques, and those favoring the techniques which yield true optimal pit designs. The purpose of this paper is not to add to this debate, but rather to present a few new ideas (partially a new look at an old idea), which can be easily implemented to noticeably improve any ultimate pit limit approach independent of the particular algorithm used. These ideas fall under the heading of "bounding the optimum" (Barnes and Johnson, 1980).
