Underground mining operating costs consist pri¬marily of direct costs such as labor, supervision, ma¬terials, and supplies, plus indirect costs. The material and supply costs vary substantially between mines but commonly range from 35 to 60% of the total direct costs. As part of the preparation of accurate operating cost estimates for a project, information must be as¬sembled to select the material and supply items and to determine the quantities of these items that will be required. Cost data then can be incorporated with the estimated material and supply requirements to determine the total material and supply costs for the project. Estimated quantities will vary considerably between mining projects depending upon factors such as the type of material being mined, the mining method, the equip¬ment selected, drilling and blasting techniques, mucking and haulage methods, ground support requirements, number of men employed, etc. Valuable information often can be obtained from suppliers and manufacturers, including data on current operating practices for similar projects, recommenda¬tions for the specific project, and preliminary cost quota¬tions. However, quotations obtained for estimates are generally higher than the prices paid at the time of purchase. Mines operating in the area, or those mining under similar conditions, also can provide essential design information, but it often is difficult to obtain cost information from the operators. Estimated costs for the most common major items of underground materials and supplies are presented in the accompanying tables. They represent current costs or cost ranges and are intended to be used only as a guide when preparing budgetary estimates for materials and supplies. Cost data were obtained mainly from suppliers and manufacturers, with up to three quotations being ob¬tained for each item whenever possible. In most cases, as noted in the table footnotes, prices were based on quantities representing normal requirements for me¬dium-size mine operations. Every attempt was made to assure accuracy. However, the cost for most items, especially those with multiple sources, can deviate sig¬nificantly for various reasons such as geographical loca¬tion, current market conditions, quantities ordered, size of the customer (which could influence the ultimate quantities purchased), and the ability of the purchasing department. It is also for these reasons that the actual amount individual mines are now paying for specific items may vary from the estimated cost in the tables. The cost for specific sizes of items that do not appear in the tables often can be factored from the data pre¬sented. Costs for many items can be converted easily to a unit that sometimes is more basic, but not as com¬monly used, such as from a length to a weight unit. Other items not listed, such as repair parts for equip¬ment, will involve contact with suppliers to determine specific recommended requirements and to obtain costs for these items as related to each individual project. Costs are expressed in terms of US dollars as of 1978 unless otherwise specified. All measurements, sizes, and weights are expressed in conventional units (i.e. feet, inches, pounds) ; applicable metric conversion fac¬tors follow each table. Costs are represented for drill steel and bits; mining explosives; blasting caps; blasting supplies; ground sup¬port items; ventilation equipment; utility pipe, utility hose, and accessories; mine track and accessories; tires for underground equipment; lubricants and fuels; and miscellaneous supplies.

INTRODUCTION Estimation of capital and operating costs for mines and mills has long been a necessary ingredient of feasibility studies, and though many practitioners have successfully used "rules of thumb" and factor estimating methods for many years, a great deal of work is usually required to prepare an initial estimate and/or to update or revise such an estimate. Development of comprehensive mining and milling cost models during the 1970's by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and by Canadian workers (O'Hara and Mullar) provided the basis for feasibility-level cost estimates, but the numerous equations and the apparent rigor and complexity involved in preparing a project estimate using these models has discouraged many, if not most, potential users. Their acceptance was also hindered by a broad misunderstanding by many engineers in the minerals industries who had little exposure to such procedures, and by a possibly inadequate level of explanation or documentation of the parametric approach to cost estimating. The preliminary nature of most databases, geologic/engineering/ and market, available to the engineer or analyst during the early stages of a mineral project is a universal problem. Basing corporate mega-investment decisions or even individual equipment selection decisions on the usual "SWAG’s has always been a risky practice, but in the current business environment, the "guesstimates" are almost 'verboten', and are certainly becoming antiquated with the advent of both the described models, the ubiquitous microcomputer, and the nearly-ubiquitous hybrid species known as the "computerized engineer". Engineers have almost always sought techniques of cost estimation that can be applied and justified when geologic and engineering information for a mining project is preliminary and incomplete. The answer, in some cases, is the "parametric" approach. Equations, based on actual, past experience are developed to relate capital and operating costs to major physical variables such as the rate of mining or milling, with modifiers for such details as mining method, process characteristics, methods of construction, or types of equipment . Cost Engineering Standards Five major types of fixed capital cost estimates have been defined by the American Association of Cost Engineers : 1. Order-of-Magnitude estimate based on previous cost data and minimal knowledge. usually a "ratio estimate" with no better than +/- 30% accuracy. 2. Many factors must be considered when designing a heap leach pad. Geotechnical properties of the ore, can and will affect how well an ore leaches, the solution recovery, stability of the heap, and settlement. As a heap is stacked some of these properties will change due to the increased load. In order to properly design a heap these properties should be determined beforehand so that the heap performs as intended.

In the estimation of recoverable resources, geostatistical techniques such as Multiple Indicator Kriging require a change of support correction to derive theoretical recoveries based on an assumed level of mining selectivity. The change of support models most widely used in practice entail model based generalized corrections either on a global or local basis. Examples include the affine and indirect lognormal methods. Change of support corrections derived empirically through short-scale conditional simulation realizations often show notable differences compared with theoretical corrections determined using model variogram parameters. The existing changes of support models are reviewed and an alternative method is proposed.

This study highlights the significant presence of submicrometer- sized airborne particles in underground coal mines, especially around the belt conveyor drift areas. Using realtime instruments and gravimetric samplers, the assessment revealed that particle concentrations were notably higher in the belt entry compared to other locations, with a strong presence of submicrometer- and nanoparticle-sized dust. The study’s findings emphasize the importance of addressing small particle exposure, as these particles, composed of harmful substances like calcium, copper and iron, can pose serious health risks to miners. This research emphasizes the importance of improving air exposure estimation through more effective monitoring and characterization techniques to better understand and reduce workers’ exposure to hazardous airborne particles in the mining environments.

Maintenance and inventory are usually the last items considered in mine development. They need to be addressed properly and early. The micro-computer brings sophistication within the reach of even the smallest mines. Maintenance and inventory programs, if properly installed, will reduce costs 15 to 25% and allow management time to address the mining and metallurgical problems at start up. Shops and warehouses are rarely designed properly. Large engineering firms spend 5 to 20 times more than is necessary for first class facilities. There is an optimum design, size, and layout. Take the time necessary to assure you get the right people, programs, and facilities in that order. Maintenance, inventory, and inventory control must be addressed early if a small mine is to have a chance at optimizing costs during the first two years of operation. This is hard work and is usually put on the back burner until the mine is in some degree of trouble. Hiring an experienced maintenance superintendent is important but it is not the complete solution. Maintenance systems, design of facilities, and use of computers are not skills that maintenance people usually have. In addition, the work of ordering spare parts and working with erection people is a full time job and any maintenance people on site during construction are quickly recruited. The end result is that few mines start up with an adequate Maintenance or Inventory System in place. The months, and in some cases years, that the mine attempts to operate without a system are both painful and expensive. Designs of successful integrated maintenance and inventory programs are virtually 100% supported with some outside assistance. Our system is the approach that we are most familiar with and this paper will isolate how Rushton International would go about setting up systems and designing support facilities. Micro-computers are the only way for a small mine to go. ~ini-computers cost more originally and operating costs are many times higher than even the most sophisticated micro system. Micro- computer software is developed further and recent advances in hardware makes medium priced units equal to most mini's in RAW COMPUTER POWER. A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

The platinum group metals (PGM's) are typically recovered by flotation, smelting of the flotation concentrate to matte, and matte leaching. Concentrates too low grade to be processed economically by the conventional process require a new treatment route. PLATSOL, a new pressure leach process, was developed for the Northmet deposit and dissolves in one step base and precious metals (PGM's and gold). Various options exist to recover all pay metals from the leach liquor. The preferred option to date involves a solid-liquid separation, followed by sulphide precipitation of gold and the PGM's, and copper solvent extraction using commercial solvent extractants. This paper briefly summarises the process and the effect of the main leach parameters. Application of the PLATSOL process to various feedstocks is also presented.

The most important safety aspect associated with great mining height in steeply dipping coal seam mining is the stability and control of the roof. When soft coal and hard gangue make up the immediate roof of a working face, the soft-coal interlayer plays a significant role in gangue damage and can cause problems such as roof collapse in front of the support, collapse of partial area supports and other problems that can affect the stability of the supports and the surrounding rock system. This study found that the first weighting step of a multigangue roof is larger than that of a nongangue roof, but periodic weighting steps are similar. The overburden collapse height is lower in a multigangue roof than in a nongangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Failure of the coal interlayer is the key factor in the collapse of multilayer gangue. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the support is concluded by the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer mechanical model. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. Certain measures are proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.

Rend Lake is an Army Corps of Engineers reservoir located in Franklin and Jefferson Counties in south-central Illinois. The lake consists of 20,000 acres of water and 19,000 acres of public access land. The site attracts over two million visitors a year and is surrounded by campgrounds and other recreational facilities. The lake overlies the largest tonnage of low sulfur coal in the state. Coal is being removed beneath the lake from five mines operated by three coal companies. Currently high extraction mining operations are approaching low-lying, environmentally sensitive, and high-use recreational areas. Advanced planning to maximize coal extraction and minimize potential effects of subsidence requires the development of procedures to assess the impact of high-extraction mining on the land use of the area. The Bureau of Mines, the Corps of Engineers, and the coal companies have initiated research to assess the following proposed planning steps to ensure the maximum recovery of the coal resources while minimizing impacts to surface land use: 1) Establish a dialogue between the surface and mineral owners; 2) develop a geographic information system to aid in assessing existing land use and potential changes; 3) assess the potential effects of subsidence on drainage, wildlife habitats, and changes in land use prior to mining; 4) coordinate the mining displacements with surface activities to minimize disruption; and 5) develop appropriate mitigation plans before mining occurs.

A mathematical model of the industrial hydrocyclone based on fluid dynamics is a better alternative to the currently existing empirical models. The swirling-flow velocities are determined by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with an appropriate turbulence model. The solution of the momentum-balance equations yields the flow field inside the hydrocyclone which determines the particle trajectories, and subsequently the classification curve. The essence of the model is that the physical dimensions of the hydrocyclone and the slurry characteristics can be incorporated, and the influence of these parameters reflects on the flow predictions. The predicted tangential and axial velocities in a 250-mm hydrocyclone are in good agreement with the laser-Doppler velocimetry measurements. Finally, the predicted classification curves show good agreement with experimental data measured on a KREBS Dl0B hydrocyclone.

Ilmenite-rich lunar deposits can be converted to liquid oxygen to support lunar base operations and space transportation propulsion needs by a Carbotek-developed process. Iron oxide in ilmenite is reduced at elevated temperatures by hydrogen in a fluidized-bed reactor to water vapor which is electrolyzed to product oxygen and recycle hydrogen. Reaction rate, thermodynamic equilibrium, and lunar-gravity fluidization behavior are key factors which have been considered. Fluid-solids behavior has been modeled from data taken at lunar gravity conditions aboard NASA KC-135 flights. Large-scale pilot plant operations are planned to complete the development.

The key takeaway of this study is the significant improvement in dust protection for roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. The optimized canopy air curtain (CAC), with a redesigned two-level manifold system, provides uniform airflow distribution that effectively reduces dust exposure. By enhancing the protection of operators from harmful respirable coal and silica dust, this technology can reduce the risk of diseases such as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis. The application of this optimized CAC design in real-life coal mining operations can dramatically improve worker health and safety by minimizing dust-related exposure, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and prolonging the lifespan of mining equipment by reducing dust accumulation.

"Once the primary fuel source for the United States and the economic backbone for communities from Appalachia to Wyoming, coal has been on a steady decline since the mid 1990s, and is now at the center of political debate in the United States.The political spectrum of the United States is divided on the future of coal and its place in the energy sector. The coal mining industry and the communities that rely on coal have increasingly been pitted against forces that wish to regulate coal to the history books.In 2008, President Obama launched what many have called his war on coal, and during his eight years in office, he pushed through numerous pieces of regulations and legislation and that he said were aimed at reducing carbon emissions, but that others viewed as direct assaults on the domestic coal industry. Obama led the United States delegation to Paris to sign the Paris Accord in 2016, a 196-country agreement pledging that the United States would do its part to reduce carbon emissions. His administration also instituted clean air, power and water regulations that added extra environmental burdens to many industries, but perhaps none more so than the coal industry.In this month’s lead feature, “A study of U.S. coal mine closures since 1994” (page 18), the impact of the war on coal, and other factors, can be seen in text and figures. Author Jacob Brinkman and coauthors Jay Schafler and Catherine Johnson scoured the data of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to show how coal production and mines have been impacted since 1994 and how the years 1994 to 2000 and 2008 to 2016 were particularly hard on the industry.For example, in 1994 there were 2,354 coal mines in the United States. Currently, there are 1,035 mines in operation.In 2016, then candidate Donald Trump promised to end the war on coal and to put coal miners back to work. In 2017, President Trump has followed up on those promises. He announced plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris Accord, signed an executive order designed to undo the Clean Power Plan put in place by President Obama, halted the research on the health effects of mountaintop removal coal mining, directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revise the guidelines of waste water from power plants and has touted that more than 1,000 coal miners have returned to work since he was elected."

Oil production rate and ultimate primary recovery from a heavy or viscous oil reservoir is usually limited to a very small fraction of the original oil in place. Typically, normal production rate is in the range of up to 10 barrels per day and expected ultimate cumulative production is up to 10% of in place values. Heavy oil reserves are not all alike. The physical properties of the rock, the liquid hydrocarbons, and depths of the deposits are so different that each reservoir poses a unique enhanced oil recovery problem. In some reservoirs thermal recovery by internal heat generation or external heat injection has been successfully exploited. In other reservoirs, mining the oil bearing formation for oil recovery by surface processing has been practiced. This paper will present an overview of the heavy oil recovery state of the art and discuss the critical factors leading to the decision for selection of a conventional hydrocarbon recovery or mining and extraction processes.

At the 25th Peruvian Mining Convention, the start-up of Antamina was called ?the mining event of the year.? Antamina, one of the largestcopper-zinc mines in the world, began operations in May 2001.Augusto Baertl is Executive Chairman of Compañía Minera Antamina, the operating company. He said in a convention address that Antamina would be in full production in 2002. ?I would like to stress that Antamina is, in every respect, a highly stringent operation, as it intends to be the Peruvianmine of the future,? Baertl said. ?Antamina has set the target of being, and remaining throughout time, a model mine as to technology, environmental practices and social responsibility.? [ ] In the areas of technology and operations, Baertl noted that ?we have incorporated the best engineering design available and state-of-the art technology for mining, grinding and transportation processes, among others.? In the environmental area, he said that ?we have carried out careful environ-mental impact studies and have incorporated modern technologies and methods to control and minimize any environmental impact.? In the social field, Baertl noted that ?our relationship with neighboring communities is being developed under the premises of the social responsibility philosophy.? These include popular consultation processes, environmental committees and conciliation discussion committees. The purpose, he said, is to encourage communities located within the area of influence of the project to find and lead by themselves their path toward sustainable development, beyond the life of the operation itself.?

Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator's position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

Construction of a major linear project in any environment is difficult, at best. Construction of a major linear project which includes major subway elements, both cut and cover and tunneling, in the center of an urban environment, approaches the impossible. I believe such a project would be impossible for a private company or a privately owned utility for a variety of reasons. The major two reasons are the funding necessary for such massive projects and the myriad of individual interests associated with private ownership of land. Such projects are possible in the public sector only because the need for the project... as is the case with mass transportation in Atlanta. . .overrides the profit motive. Without the profit motive, private companies, whether utilities or not, are precluded from practical interest in the development of any project. While it is safe to conclude that a profit-oriented business would have no practical interest in developing such massive projects as may include major tunnels, it would be useful, I think, to compare some of the significant differences between private profit-oriented businesses, and an agency, or Authority, such as MARTA, in building a major linear project. Selective Agglomeration experiments carried out to clean ultra-fine coal are examined. Effect of feed size, pulp density, coalescing agent dosage, and mixing intensity and duration on the kinetics of agglomeration are principally evaluated. A computer coded population balance model governing agglomerate size distribution and composition utilizing coalescence and breakage mechanisms is developed. Model calibration, verification and extension are analyzed.

As the world tension relaxes and as the interest and taste for consumer products change, complacency is beginning to prevail over the needs of minerals and primary metals. The current trend towards resources and energy conservation calls for miniaturization of consumer goods, and lowers the demand for virgin materials to produce goods and services. Challenged by the third world countries with high grade ores and low labor costs, industrialized nations with lower grade ores are being pressed into more efficient operation through technological innovation, while protecting the environment. In many countries, domestic mines were forced to close since the oil crises due to rapidly rising energy and labor costs. Research in conventional mineral processing needs to be directed towards breakthrough technologies in order to maintain the competitive edge in the global marketplace. Research activities will provide new challenges in the processing of solid waste and waste water for environmental remediation as well as for resource conservation, in the preparation of new functional materials of extreme purity and/or unique properties for high technology applications and in the development of such future resources as deep sea minerals and extraterrestrial materials.
