Chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic data have been obtained for suites of plutonic rock samples from the Guichon Creek Batholith of British Columbia and the Mineral-Iron Mountain-Sturgill Peak- Cuddy Mountain-Peck Mountain areas of western Idaho. Intrusions at these two geographically separate localities represent composite plutons ranging from early gabbro through quartz diorite to late grano- diorite and more silicic-alkalic phases. They are early Mesozoic (200 m.y.) in age, and contain porphyry-type mineralization in close spatial and temporal association with late-stage intrusions of porphyry, aplite, pegmatite, and (or) breccia. Country rocks are eugeo-synclinal assemblages of metasedimentary and metavolcanic greenstones of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic age. The petrochemical evolution of these intrusions, and the effects of subsequent hydrothermal alteration and metallization, are illustrated by standard ternary diagrams of the major oxide and mineralogical data. Samples plotted on an AFM diagram suggest a calc-alkaline magma trend. However, their distributions on NKC and Qz-Kf-Pf diagram show well-defined trondhjemitic (Na20-rich) and tonalitic (quartz-rich) variants to this trend, which are similar in part to those reported for mineralized island arc plutons of the northern Caribbean and southwest Pacific, but which contrast markedly to those for continental plutons of the Bingham District, Boulder Batholith, districts of southern Arizona, and elsewhere.

A new method for the design of long- wall chain pillars, called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), is described. The method provides estimates of the relative stability of different longwall pillar designs during all stages of their service life. The key issue addressed by ALPS is the magnitude and time-of-arrival of the longwall abutment loads applied to chain pillars. A field study was conducted and other available field data were analyzed in order to develop an approach for estimating the abutment loads. An example based on longwall experience in the Pittsburgh seam is used to illustrate how ALPS can be used in mine design.

At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. (Fig. 1) The first 1000 t are situated in watertight clay, the rear part in water bearing loamy, clayey sands with interlayers of loamy clays. The figure shows the soft change-over from clay to sand. In 1990, the former Soviet Union ranked first worldwide in the production of asbestos, chromium, iron ore, iron and steel, lime, manganese, mercury, nickel, peat, potash, and titanium. Since the middle of this century, that nation had maintained one of the world's most valuable mineral industries, ranking number two in 1950 and number one in 1990. It is clearly an enormous mining industry, with more than 1300 enterprises and an estimated employment base of 1.2 million persons (Table 1). Despite its size and historical achievements, however, the mining industry of the 1990s in the former Soviet republics is encountering problems in performance, efficiency, transportation and utilization. The industry operates below full capacity and is plagued by outdated technology and equipment, rising production costs, capital shortages and labor strikes, in addition to general economic deterioration and civil unrest. Attempts to boost domestic minerals supply in the republics so far have failed because of economic difficulties. And the republics lack the financing required to initiate new, large-scale development projects.

Over the past several years, computerized financial models have been an important part of Newmont's strategic planning process. Two applications will be discussed in this paper: a general purpose financial model of Newmont, and a detailed operational/financial model of Magma Copper Company. Newmont?s general purpose financial model was developed using Lotus 1-2-3. It was designed to aid management in assessing the financial consequences of investment and financing decisions associated with long-term strategic planning by simulating the consolidated effect from individual transactions. Not only is the model capable of assessing the sensitivity of specific decisions to changes in the external economic environment (i. e., commodity prices, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates), it can also evaluate the effect from operating and financial decisions, including changing production levels and cost structures at individual operating units as well as simulating several types of transactions, including equity and debt issues, acquisitions and divestitures. The analysis of Magma Copper Company required the development of a detailed operating and financial model of the Company. The model was developed using IFPS in the corporation?s UNISYS (then Burroughs) B7900 mainframe computer and included separate pro forma financial statements for each of San Manuel-Pinto Valley's mines and concentrators, as well as Magma's smelting and refining operations. The outcome of this analysis was the decision to merge Magma Copper and Pinto Valley Copper Corporation, and to recapitalize the new corporation in order to provide funds for a retrofit and expansion of its Arizona smelter and expansions of its refinery and SXEW facilities.

Grinding mills, both autogenous and ball can be powered by several basic means. The three methods used today are girth gear drives, gearless drives and trunnion coupled reducers. This paper will focus on the first of these methods -girth gear drives. The girth gear drive has been used on thousands of mills which continue to operate successfully. These drives are noted for their simplicity and low cost. In the past, the horsepower capacity of girth gears has been slow to keep up with the horsepower increase required by the mill builders, particularly since the advent of the SAG mill. Gear manufacturers had capacity for 2000 HP mills in the 1950's, 5000 HP in the 1960's and 6500 horsepower in the 1970's. The 70's and 80's brought dual pinion girth gear drives which allowed mill sizes beyond 10,000 horsepower. Gear manufactures who could not keep up with the pace of the horsepower demands and the quality and reliability demanded by the mill builders and users have fallen by the wayside.

Before specifications are discussed it may be well to define the term "Mineral Aggregates." Professor K. B. Woods (1) defined "Mineral Aggregate--An aggregation of sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, or other material of mineral composition used in combination with a binding medium to form bituminous and portland cement concrete, macadam, mastic, mortar, plaster, etc., or alone as in railroad ballast, filter beds, and various manufacturing processes, such as fluxing, etc. " This definition is too all inclusive for the purposes of this paper; therefore, this discussion will be confined to specifications for natural aggregates which means sand and gravel and crushed stone, and limited primarily to coarse aggregate which is aggregate larger than one-quarter inch in size. To the uninitiated, this may seem to be a very limited subject on an unimportant material. However, aggregates are essential in all types of construction. From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. INTRODUCTION The majority of ground water flow models have been developed for large computer systems. Most of these operate under a batch mode of operation, that is, the data are input with a deck of punched cards. The advent of micro- and minicomputers over the last few years opens the possibility of adapting many of these large flow programs to the smaller computers. In general, this adaptation will require more computer time to run the program, but in many cases if the small computer is in-house, the overall cost may be less than that required for a large computer. There are also a number of peripheral devices that can be used to make the data input much easier. As an example, the use of a digitizer with a finite element or finite difference mesh reduces the data input time considerably; the use of a graphics terminal for display of the mesh immediately after it is developed shows immediately whether there are errors in the location of node points. DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTERACTIVE SYSTEM The finite element program, UNSAT2, has been used over the past several years by the authors for several ground water flow problems (Bloomsburg, 1977; Bloomsburg and Wells, 1978; Zahl and Bloomsburg, 1980). In the past these programs have been run on an IBM 370/ 145 computer under the batch mode of operation. One difficulty that has been encountered has been in determining the length of time step that must be specified for operation of the program. The problem is that if the time steps are too large, the program becomes un- stable and operation ceases. If this happens in the middle of the problem, the only alternative is to reduce the length of time step and repeat the entire run. This problem has been alleviated in other pro- grams by using a subroutine that determines the time step automatically. If the solution becomes unstable, the time step is reduced automatically and that portion of the solution is repeated. With an interactive system this can be done by storing the output pressures and restarting the program with the new output pressures. Under the batch mode of operation, there is an option in UNSAT2 that allows restarting of the program from the last point of solution, but this must be specified when originally starting the program. The interactive computer system that we use currently consists of a PDP 1 1 /23 with hard disk drive, CRT terminal, plotter, graphics terminal, digitizer, and printer. The computer has 256 K bytes of core storage and the hard disk drive will accept a 5.2 M byte disk. To run a large program on a computer such as this, some overlaying must occur; that is, subroutines are stored on disk and put into core storage only when they are actually needed for running the program. UNSAT2 required very few changes to run on this computer but some changes were necessary to take advantage of the interactive capabilities of the system. One of these changes consists of the development of a program called DBUILD to build the data file for running the program. This program calls for each piece of data by prompt statement and gives instructions for using the digitizer. The data are then entered in completely unformated form. The node points must be entered in order and the coordinates are determined automatically by the digitizer. The pressure readings or initial conditions on each node point are entered through the terminal. All element information also is entered through the terminal. After DBUILD is run the mesh may be displayed immediately on the graphics scope whereupon any error in node point

The Inland System supplies raw water to the industrial and domestic users in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. The Inland System, which is nearly 60 years old, consists of an approximately 57.9m (190 feet) high earthen dam across the Blackburn Fork of the Black Warrior River, a 39.6m (130 feet) high reinforced concrete intake structure, a 1524mm (60inch) diameter Dresser coupled steel transmission pipeline, and various distribution lines extending into Birmingham. The Inland System was owned, operated and maintained by the Industrial Water Board (IWB) of the City of Birmingham, an agency of the city government, from 1958 until 1994. In 1994, the City of Birmingham consolidated all water and distribution functions under the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB). In 1988, the IWB determined that the Inland System had reached a point where its reliability could not be assured without an in-depth evaluation and renovation. The IWB engaged Christy/Cobb, Inc. (CCI) of Birmingham as its consultant for the renovation work. CCI evaluated the Inland System and submitted a report to the IWB in April, 1992. The report contained several recommendations for capital improvements to the system including increasing the emergency spillway capacity, reconstructing the fuse plug, relocating public access to the lake away from the dam area, constructing a new intake structure, and constructing a tunnel through the dam abutment to deliver the water from the proposed intake structure to the existing 1524mm (60 inch) diameter supply line. The new intake structure and tunnel would provide for a future maximum demand flow rate as well as provide bypass and level control capabilities. CCI was authorized in 1992 to proceed with the engineering design for the renovation of the Inland System with emphasis on the spillway and intake structure. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The major component of the renovation of the Inland System was the new intake structure and tunnel through the dam abutment. CCI engaged Jenny Engineering Corporation (JEC) of Springfield, New Jersey as a consultant for the tunnel design. JEC was responsible for the design of the tunnel, the connecting shaft between the intake structure and tunnel, and the steel pipe final lining, while CCI was responsible for the intake structure and the connection to the existing supply pipeline as well as overall project management. CCI and JEC evaluated the project site in order to select the location for the new intake structure and set the alignment for the tunnel. A factor in the evaluation process was that the level of the lake could not be lowered to construct the new intake structure since the supply of water from the Inland System had to maintained. "The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

In December of 1992, the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection, solicited bids for Contract 543B. The low bidder was a joint venture of Schiavone Construction Co., Inc. and the J. F. Shea Co., Inc. When completed, the project provides a 4.88 meter diameter water tunnel 8,840 meters long. This paper presents a case history of the equipment and construction methods utilized for this, the first portion of the New York City Water Tunnel constructed by use of a tunnel boring machine.

There is assembled here this morning in Chicago the heartland of America, what is undoubtedly the greatest concentration of Technical, Scientific and "CAN DO" knowledge ever assembled in America. The participation in this Conference by the representatives of so many nations is particularly impressive and is a further indication of the importance of the subject matter of this conference which you will be discussing in much detail during the next few days. Another impressive feature of this Conference is the participation of a large segment of the construction industry in whose hands fall the job of building what others design. Also strongly represented is the manufacturing industry whose capability is well known throughout the world. They have the resources to design, develop and manufacture the machines and specialized equipment needed to do any job which the world requires. You should not expect to gain any knowledge from my few remarks this morning as I am undoubtedly the least qualified individual in this room on the highly technical and scientific subjects you will be discussing during these next few days. However, I shall offer a few broad suggestions on subject matter which I trust may generate serious thought during your discussions.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Apparatus The solvent extraction tests were carried in a 2000 ml plastic cylindrical reactor equipped with four 0.5” baffles. The primary concern in dealing with contractual arrangements for construction is getting the work completed satisfactorily, in the shortest time, and for the least expense for the owner--while assuring that all other parties associated with the contract make a reasonable profit for their effort. In our complex construction climate of today, achieving all of these is usually not possible. Somewhere between the beginning of design and the completion of the work, disagreements and delays arise which can destroy the best of intentions. Assuming that all parties associated with the contract are acting honorably and professionally, the disagreements generally arise through inappropriate contract types or through flawed contract documents. These flaws can be either sins of omission or commission, but we must find a way to lessen, if not completely eliminate, their impact. Disagreements and delays are directly related to the extra cost which the owner and the other involved parties must suffer. Usually the attorneys are the only ones who come out on the positive side. Inappropriate or defective contract documents can be the result of inadequate time for preparation and review, laziness in not searching out the proper terms and language, insufficient recognition of the proper assignment of risks, or just ignorance as to what is right and what is wrong for the particular project. They can also result from a client, particularly a public agency, providing rigid general conditions and format requirements with which the engineer is not allowed to tamper. Arguments

INTRODUCTION Las Vegas has recently been termed the “Construction Capital of the Country”. It has also been acknowledged as the fastest growing city in the country for several years running. The rapid growth improves the economic picture of the region but it also imparts unusual demands on the area’s infrastructure. In 1994 the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA)was working on a master plan to address the rapid growth. A long range analysis revealed the need for additional water treatment capacity and delivery systems. Short term projections showed that the current system would reach capacity in the summer of 1997 with the possibility of demand exceeding the supply. The River Mountains Tunnel #2 is part of a $150M scheme to quickly upgrade the system to meet the short term demand, improve the overall system operation and allow for a smooth transition into the larger additions being planned for the future. The SNWA selected Carollo/Black & Veatch (CBV) to provide detailed design and construction management for the upgrades. The River Mountains Contracts consisted of five separate contracts broken out separately to stream line a very aggressive (just 34 months) design and construction schedule. Necessary work included four miles of excavated and lined tunnel, connections from existing pipelines to and from the new tunnel including large diameter (to 3.66m(144 in)) valves, a 18 927cu m (5 million gal) regulating reservoir, a surge tank and a 170 343cu m (45 million gal) reservoir to add additional storage to the system. Notice to Proceed was given to Kajima Engineering and Construction (Kajima) on May22, 1995 for the construction of the River Mountains Tunnel #2. The design called for a tunnel to be driven 6070m (19 915ft) in rock and lined to a finished diameter of 3.71m (12.17ft).Excavation began on December 14, 1995 and holed through on April 30, 1996. Lining began on June 25, 1996 and a notice of Substantial Completion was issued on December 13,1996. This paper describes the measures taken to complete the tunnel in 18 months from Notice to Proceed to Substantial Completion. THE RIVER MOUNTAINS SITE The River Mountains are a low range of rugged mountains separating the Las Vegas Valley from its main supply of water, the Colorado River at Lake Mead. Natural aggregate is the number one non-energy mineral resource in terms of value and volume and is a necessary commodity for sustainable communities. While aggregate is a non-renewable resource, supplies are nearly inexhaustible on a global scale. Natural aggregates have characteristics that differentiate them from most other mineral commodities: a high number of potential extraction sites, a high volume to value ratio, significantly different set of potential environmental impacts, and regional importance combined with a narrow economic transportation radius. Because of these and other differences, resource management policies for aggregates should differ from ?general? mineral resource policies, even though the end goal is the same for both ? ensuring sustainable resource management. To achieve the goals of sustainable aggregate management each stakeholder ? government, industry, the public, and non-governmental organizations ? will need to accept certain responsibilities, one of the most important of which is to become informed about natural resource issues. Sustainability is about making trade offs among competing objectives, and people disagree about the appropriate balance among the goals of economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental health. One of the primary purposes of mineral indicators is to provide information to decision makers and the public so as to ensure that the public debate about policy choices is grounded in fact. We identify the unique aspects of aggregate resource management and introduce the concepts of sustainable mineral resource management. We then present mineral indicator sets for aggregate resources from Italy, the United Kingdom, and Slovenia to demonstrate that effective mineral indicators should be specific to the resource in question and the public values and objectives.

New technologies confront mining organizations with unprecedented human factors challenges. Likely problem areas range from the design of the human- machine interface to the design of work groups and mine organizational structures. However, these human design considerations are commonly ignored in most industries, resulting in a failure rate of 75% for advanced technology programs. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is addressing these concerns through a program of research on the human side of high technology mining systems. Interviews with mining industry participants and researchers have identified concern in several areas, including training and equipment design. Although new mining technologies promise to improve overall safety by relocating miners away from hazardous areas, data from MHSA accident reports and other sources suggest that certain types of new hazards may be created. Many of these new hazards can be reduced though a systems approach to ergonomic design of equipment, tasks, and work processes. This evidence, combined with reviews of high technology human-machine systems in other industries. can help in the design of safe and efficient future mining technologies.
