"In Part I, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. The diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals – tennantite, sinnerite and lautite – and compared with enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. IntroductionA comprehensive thermodynamic review has been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur (Cu- As-S) system (Gow et al., 2014, 2015a, 2016b; Gow, Huang and Young, 2016c). Data on the free energies of more than 100 species were collected from various authors, and thermodynamic databases collated to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database is listed and discussed in Gow et al. (2015a). Diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2015a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014) and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2015b).In the present study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams were generated by changing the Cu-As-S stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species were shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions and sulfur oxidation states."

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district and the construction of the E. R. Bell Mine is one of the significant mining developments in the United States during the past ten years. This mine will exploit one of the larger deposits of disseminated gold presently known, with proven, recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 million grams of gold. Interest generated by the success of this project has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell Mine, is a 70/30 joint venture between Freeport Gold Company and FMC Gold Incorporated, both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. and FMC Incorporated. Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Freeport Exploration Company, another Freeport-McMoRan affiliate, manages the exploration and pre-mine development. Drilling, design, construction and management of the Bell Mine are provided by Freeport Gold Company.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel, Burrard Inlet Crossing project for the Greater Vancouver Water District entails deep shaft construction, subway sized pressurized face tunneling through highly variable ground conditions, installation of three permanent steel water mains and construction of elaborate valve chambers adjacent to either shaft. The paper discusses key elements of the planning and implementation of 6.69 m Ø slurry mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) assembly in a small diameter deep shaft including incorporation of a fully pressurized launch lock, preparations for saturation diving, surface support infrastructure and initial mining sequence.

Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.

This report is based on experience developed on the construction of one contract for the Buffalo, New York subway. The Buffalo subway is under construction for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and is called the LRRT-Light Rail Rapid Transit or more commonly the Metro. The Initial Route of the Buffalo subway construction started early in 1979 and is scheduled for completion in May, 1984. The initial system includes 5.2 miles of underground construction, 1.3 miles at grade for a total of 6.5 miles of subway system. A total of fourteen stations, eight underground and six at grade are included on the system. The Initial Route has a planned expansion to 17.3 miles in the future. On January 15, 1979, a Joint Venture of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, James McHugh Construction Co., Chicago, Illinois, and Kenny Construction Company, Wheeling, Illinois, was awarded contract 100031, the Line Tunnels from Amherst Street to South Campus in northcentral Buffalo between Delaware Park and the State University, (see Fig. 1, Location Plan) This $35,000,000.00 contract was designed by Hatch Associates Consultants, Inc., Buffalo, N.Y. The Notice to Proceed was issued January 15, 1979 and the scheduled completion date is August 18, 1981. The project consists of two parallel rock tunnels with a minimum excavated diam of 18 ft 0 in. and a final concrete lining of 16 ft 0 in. diam. The tunnels total 14,630 linear ft. In addition to the tunnels, contract C-31 includes four shafts, an underground pump station, three cross passage connections, and other minor work items. Demand for multifunctional drilling fluids continuously increases. In the quest for more hydrocarbons, drilling has extended to deep water areas (now in excess of 2.000 m) and to very deep wells (now in excess of 6.000 m). In these extreme conditions, low temperatures, as low as 1-5°C on the sea bed, high temperatures, in excess of 200°C, and high pressures, more than 1.000 bars, in the bottom of the well, are frequently encountered. In these harsh environments, synthetic oil and oil based drilling fluids are used, but the former are expensive while strict environmental requirements have limited the use of the latter. Thus, drilling industry has turned back to water based drilling fluids which use bentonite as primary viscosifier and as a fluid loss control additive. However, in conditions of high temperatures, bentonite suspensions gel and loose their exceptional low temperatures properties, thus, additives are needed to overcome such problems. In this article we review these challenging drilling environments and establish the requirements for the multifunctional drilling fluids. Our research indicates that demand for continuing use of bentonite by drilling fluid industry is strong. Furthermore, we bring forward the opportunities for new additive development which can expand the operational ranges of bentonite suspensions.

Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January 1995 to develop long-term plans for decommissioning waste rock material at its Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, a total of 4 Gt (4.4 billion st) will be deposited in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semiarid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. Data obtained from a laboratory program and from soil-atmosphere modeling was used to design horizontal field test plots. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots is discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapotranspiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near-zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. An important feature of the design is the use of run-of-mine waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long-term performance.

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

Companies have installed powerful desktops for their personnel and instrumentation and control systems in their plants. These desktops are, in many cases, connected to a company intranet. Still, process engineers have to obtain their data manually. Engineers use process calculations from manually calculated averages from the plant; field operators collect equipment data on log sheets; and maintenance engineers collect critical information on log sheets. All of this information resides in individual machines. What are the strategic tools that will enable collaboration between them? How can operators, engineers, and managers access plant information to proactively increase their effectiveness in process troubleshooting, plant debottleneclung, aligning with business strategic and customer demand, satisfying environmental and safety regulations, developing capital projects, and implementing control strategies? A nonintrusive environment at the desktop is required to provide the process information to these workers. How can value be added to MS Windows technologies with the legacy systems at a minimum cost? There is no straight answer; however, there is a proven framework to leverage the large investments in new technologies. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Three examples will be described to demonstrate paradigm change. Today, process engineers can access data at the required level of detail for analysis of critical process variables at their desk or remotely. 1. Process Troubleshooting and Analysis: The engineer can develop an inferential calculation, trigger a process advisor to deter- mine the behavior of the units for the last day, and get the population of a set of batches (heats, blocks, rolls, sheets, etc). 2. Process Control and Optimization: The engineer can connect to a process simulator at steady state or a dynamic simulator of the process to evaluate new control strategies or process unit line-ups and use the process simulator as a process observer for fault diagnosis. 3. Collaboration with Accounting and Maintenance: The engineer can review reconciled data and the process mass balances, suggest maintenance cleaning or recalibration of flowmeters, and evaluate key control performance of all advanced controls.

BHP Copper's major asset is the world's largest copper mine -Escondida in Northern Chile. Ten years ago investing in Chile was considered high risk. Today, Escondida represents an investment of approximately US$2 billion. Reward is the result of managed risk and Escondida is a clear demonstration of both. The Ok Tedi copper and gold mine in Papua New Guinea represents a Rubicon of risk and a retrospective on reward in a developing country on the doorstep of a developed one. The story of these two mines encapsulates risk in the mining industry.

Controlled recirculation has been used in the metal/nonmetal mining industry for energy savings when heating and cooling air, in undersea mining and for increasing airflow to mining areas. For safe and effective use of controlled district recirculation, adequate airflow to dilute contaminants must exist prior to implementation, ventilation circuit parameters must be accurately quantified, ventilation network modeling must be up to date, emergency planning scenarios must be performed and effective monitoring and control systems must be installed and used. Safety and health issues that must be considered and may be improved through the use of controlled district recirculation include blasting fumes, dust, diesel emissions, radon and contaminants from mine fires. Controlled recirculation methods are expected to become more widely used as mines reach greater working depths, requiring that these health and safety issues be well understood. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted two controlled recirculation tests over three days at a Wyoming trona mine, utilizing an inline booster fan to improve airflow to a remote and difficult-to-ventilate development section. Test results were used to determine the effect that recirculation had on air qualities and quantities measured in that section and in other adjacent areas. Pre-test conditions, including ventilation quantities and pressures, were modeled using VnetPC. During each test, ventilation quantities and pressures were measured, as well as levels of total dust. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was used to simulate a mine contaminant to monitor recirculation wave cycles. Results showed good correlation between the model results and measured values for airflows, pressure differentials, tracer gas arrival times, mine gasses and dust levels.

The use of conventional tailings deposition methods has been the standard for decades. With the need to reduce the impact of mining, alternative methods are considered when expanding or upgrading tailings handling systems. Converting an existing tailings management system to a more sustainable deposition method during the operation of a mine may incur considerable operational and financial risk, and when assessed more traditionally, does not provide significant advantages. As a result, most mines choose to continue their current technology and add an additional pumping stage or pumpstation to their tailings line in case of a pipeline extension or Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) expansion. This also often involves raising embankments. Changing pumping technology is traditionally assessed by comparing the energy efficiency of current and prospective pumping technology. Despite a reduction in absorbed power, this traditional assessment does not include possible savings in water and the carbon footprint. With the consideration of all these three aspects, alternative pump technologies, such as Positive Displacement (PD) technology, become more economically feasible, providing increased sustainability and enable a site to future-proof their operations. Project feasibility may be affected by the high capital investment required for PD pumps. The benefit of applying PD pumping technology could be enhanced by reducing the volumetric throughput of the pipeline by dewatering the tailings to 65% solids concentration by weight. It was found that despite increasing capital expenditure, the improved reclamation of water will have a positive effect on the direct and indirect cost of fresh water intake to mine operations. This paper seeks to illustrate that in many applications the long-term benefits of investing in sustainable tailings management are optimized when more efficient PD pumping technology is combined with tailings dewatering when upgrading or expanding the tailings handling system.

"A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electric field (E-field) sensing to send text based communications using two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. INTRODUCTION Wireless, Through-the-Earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point to point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. This ability allows TTE communication to function without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure, such as repeaters. As a result, such communication systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Wadley 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer 1973; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate through a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers 1928; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Yenchek et al. 2012)."

Currently, there are several methodologies to assess ground vibrations from blasting. Of all available methodologies, one that is becoming more important is the waveform superposition or signature hole technique. This technique is based on a signature waveform assigned to each hole to build the complete waveform for the whole production blast, using the convolution between the time initiation sequence and the signature hole waveform. In the basic methodology of the signature hole technique, the waveform hole-to-hole is assumed to be the same. Several studies and field tests have proven that the waveform hole-to-hole, even in ideal rock mass conditions (rock mass with little or no joint system), changes. In addition to distance or confinement, other factors that could change the waveform hole-to-hole include different geologic paths from the source to the monitoring point and a different energy output of each hole, due to hole loading, explosive composition and/or contamination, priming, etc. These factors result in varying waveforms generated for each hole, making the waveform produced by each hole a somewhat random process. There is available in the literature some proposals to include variability in the waveform hole-to-hole, but the parameters involved are complex and difficult to estimate. In this paper, the variability in the signature waveform hole-to-hole in a blast event was recorded through a field test, and a proposal to include signature waveform variability to develop an equation based on the Fourier series is presented. This methodology is the basis for a future signature hole analysis using a Monte Carlo scheme, taking into account the variation of the amplitude and the frequency content of the waveform hole-to-hole in a production blast event.

"The use of gas, temperature and airflow sensors to monitor mine ventilation atmospheres offers numerous safety and operational bene-fits to mines. Detection of dangerous gases, changes to airflows and temperature variations are some of the obvious benefits of using at-mospheric sensors in mines. The prediction of atmospheric conditions between sensors however is potentially difficult, and gaining full cover-age a mine will require either many sensors or a method of extrapolat-ing and predicting atmospheric conditions between and downstream from a sparser array of sensors. A dynamic simulation computer model technique is demonstrated to predict time based changes to atmosphere conditions downstream from sensors. The dynamic model predicts the time based changes to conditions throughout a mine model by simulating the mixing, addition and dilution of gases and airflow changes in incremental time steps. The advantages of this method is that a real time overview of full mine atmospheric conditions can be viewed at all locations, even areas without sensors. In addition, with careful planning and consideration of potential contaminant sources, the number of required sensors can be minimized. INTRODUCTIONMine Ventilation Sensors The importance of continuously monitoring mine atmospheres has been recognised since mining underground began and the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would take canaries underground with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane (Figure 1). The canary, normally a very songful bird, would become agitated, stop singing and eventually die if not removed from these gases, signalling the miners to quickly exit the mine (Davalle, 2011)."
