This paper is a presentation of findings based upon an econometric model of the world zinc industry. The model was developed as a simple but useful aid for long-run forecasting and planning purposes. A structure was developed for both simulating real zinc price effects on production and consumption, and for forecasting long-run annual zinc prices and supply/ demand levels. Moreover, a methodology is provided to incorporate the effects of: (1) historic technological advances in zinc supply, and (2) the development of the competitive plastics industry. Finally, reduced form equations are used to generate ex post forecasts to evaluate the model's performance.

"With desert temperatures climbing high at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ in September, a group of editors were given a reprieve from the sun and stepped inside the new Cat Minestar Command Center. The movie theater-like temperatures inside were a welcome relief, and the computer screens stationed around the room were an indication of not just how much things have evolved in the mining equipment sector, but also a peek into the future of where mining is headed.Equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar have always had to deal with peaks and valleys in demand that come with mining, perhaps never more so than in the last five years. Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager for Caterpillar, said that in one month in 2012, at the height of the mining Super Cycle, Caterpillar produced more than 150 large mining trucks (haul trucks that carry 136 t/150 st or more). By contrast, Caterpillar produced about 80 of those trucks in the full year of 2016. Between 2012 and 2016, Caterpillar saw its profits drop by 40 percent.“This shows how cyclical the industry is, and it is a testament to the strength of Caterpillar to be able to tolerate the wide swings,” said Singh. Demand for commodities is once again on the rise as are commodity prices with many signs pointing toward a recovery for the mining sector, and Caterpillar has positioned itself for the recovery. During its 2017 press event in September, company officials emphasized that Caterpillar has added strength in its technology divisions by forming new partnerships and adjusting its operating plan.“At the heart of our enterprise strategy is the operating & execution (O&E) model, a strategic framework to identify areas of the business that either create or consume the most value,” said Caterpillar chief executive officer, Jim Umpleby. “Using the O&E model as a guide, we gain a deeper understanding of where we have a competitive advantage, which is key to generating high returns.”"

In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

Outokumpu introduced Flash Flotation in the early l 980's for the recovery of floatable material from grinding circuits. The devel­opment came as a result of surveys made in the company's own concentrators, initiated to find ways of improving recoveries with increasingly complex and lower grade feeds. Hydrocyclones make a separation on the basis of particle size and mass, resulting in the "over collection" of fine grained, high S.G. particles. Minerals such as pentlandite, galena and gold are easily caught in the circulating load around the mill until they are overground and rendered more difficult to collect. In the case of downstream flotation this may simply involve a reduction in the rate coefficient due to the finer sizes or, as is commonly experienced in gold operations, the mate­rial is slimed and coated onto non-floating gangue and is eventual­ly lost to tails. At the time of Outokumpu's plant surveys, it was a relatively common practice, particularly in Pb operations, to have a flotation section fed directly from the secondaiy mill discharge. This is called unit flotation and certainly provided an improvement but very high wear rates and frequent sanding out of the cells was com­mon. The development of the SkimAir® Flash Flotation cell by Outokumpu provided a subtle but quite dramatic departure from the unit cell approach. Now it was possible to feed cyclone under­flow into a special purpose-built flotation machine and recover a final grade concentrate from the grinding circuit (see Figure I). The cell was designed to handle the coarse circulating load, per­mitting the coarsest fractions to be short-circuited back to the mill and retain the floatable sizes for a nominal time of 30 seconds to several minutes. The short retention time was possible largely due to the relatively clean content of the cyclone underflow stream. This means that the fine gangue is not present except in small quan­tities and most of the fine to mid-size paiiicles are higher S.G. and more likely represent valuable mineral. This condition provides for very high rate coefficients. Typical operations would recover 40-60% of the valuable mineral in this fashion and improvements in recovery were typically from 2-5% for sulphide minerals to the 5-20% range for gold and silver.

And other technological growth takes place far away from the public view but can have as much of an impact on our daily life as does shopping at Amazon or connecting with friends on social media.At the “THRIVE 2018, Innovations Advancing Mining” conference presented by SME on Sept. 27 at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA, the focus was on innovation and how it affects the global mining industry.More than 100 people were on hand for the inaugural event, and they were treated to a unique program that focused on the cutting-edge innovations that will carry the mining industry into the future while increasing safety and productivity along the way.2018 SME President Barbara Arnold was the driving force behind the conference and put together the technical program with a focus on innovation through the entire mining life cycle and into the future. Talks ranged from more efficient and safer ways to extract minerals to some of the most advanced end uses of minerals and metals, including the use of 3D printing to create precision parts for machines and humans from advanced metal alloys.“We need to adapt new technologies to our industry and develop additional technologies as we provide materials and metals for infrastructure and energy development in the United States, around the globe, and to the Moon and beyond,” Arnold told Mining Engineering. “Our inaugural THRIVE conference sets the stage for these innovations to be applied and to continue to be developed. Our mining industry can only continue to thrive with these advances.”"

Much has been said about digital computer control of metal and mineral ore dressing processes, but little has been done. This pa- per discusses what practical use can be made today of a digital computer in an ore concentrator and how such application can be made successfully. A hypothetical, but commercially common, grinding and flotation circuit is presented in terms of analog measurements which can and are being made in existing plants and a centralized computer control system which is reasonable in terms of today's technology. Dangers and possible disadvantages of such an approach are discussed as well as estimated benefits. Possible future benefits are presented in terms of improved control technology. Development of new measuring devices is not considered as a criterion for computer benefits. The control systems described have been utilized successfully in existing ore dressing operations. However, the degree of success or failure of analog systems is generally left to the interpretation of management rather than absolute analysis. Many factors affect the economic operation of a mineral recovery circuit such as size of facility, flow sheet design, number of operating personnel, percent of recoverable mineral in the ore body, loss to tails, and haulage rates. In existing mills where little or no instrumentation has been used, it is extremely difficult to prove or disprove the advantage of analog control systems on one mill line versus its sisters due to the lack of standards and the lack of ability to separate final products by ton.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation may possibly be thought of as a specialized subject of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of mineral producers' staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture. Comments in this paper deal with rail transportation.

It is four years since the seminal study of demand for rapid excavation by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and Engineering outlined this technology's opportunities, requirements and significance to the challenges of urbanization and natural resource conservation. The demand study was quite simple. Opportunities were valued at market while requirements to produce new technologies were valued at cost. The significance of new technology in economic terms was measured by the net discounted gains to users over time. The Academy view in 1968 was that these gains, even most modestly estimated, appeared large enough to justify the bill for research proposed by that Committee (1). In 1970 the question of demands became international in what is recognized as the first international experiment in technological policy analysis, terminating in the Advisory Conference on Tunneling of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)(2). A monumental demand survey formed the basis for its economic assessment. The twenty-two OECD nations also made an impressive attempt to measure the magnitude of existing research and development efforts. In their recommendations periodical statistical demand forecasting and collection of demand data (Recommendation 1) was given central importance for public planning (Recommendation 2), the financing of public construction (Recommendation 3) and the encouragement of technological advance (Recommendation 4). Their program for international cooperation led to OECD's establishment of a Directorate for Environmental Affairs, and influenced the organization of the World Environmental Conference meetings now held in Stockholm under United Nations auspices. Hecla Limited, Magee Scientific and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) combined efforts to evaluate an in situ air filtration system for use in an underground mine environment. The purpose of the collaboration was to determine the efficacy of such a technology for reducing the concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM), with the aim of improving air quality in underground hardrock mines. A secondary goal was to evaluate the use of an aethalometer as a means of real-time measurement of black carbon as a surrogate for DPM. The evaluation included measuring the DPM-capture efficiency of the filter when it was preloaded with dust. Toward this end, rock dust was introduced at the filter inlet to create a dust layer on the filter surface, with the intent of providing improved capture of the much smaller DPM particles. The filtration efficiency for DPM was assessed by comparing measurements of DPM taken at the inlet and outlet of the system, using both realtime and time-weighted-average approaches. The real-time measurements were performed with a Model AE33 aethalometer, and filter samples analyzed by the NIOSH 5040 method were used to assess the effects of the system on time-weighted-average concentrations of total carbon. Results showed a reduction in DPM concentrations in the range of 82 to 89 percent. While the calculated efficiencies based on the two different measurement methods were similar, the DPM levels reported by the aethalometer were higher, possibly due to differences in the performance of the size selectors used for the two methods: impactors versus cyclones. More research is required to develop a robust correlation between the two methods to support the use of the aethalometer in future mining applications. The advantages of the aethalometer are that it can measure and record DPM levels for weeks at a time and can be directly connected to a mine monitoring system, potentially at multiple locations. Ideally, such data can be used to initiate the startup of the filtration system should DPM concentrations reach an action level. This work demonstrated that in situ filtration systems, modified to collect DPM and coupled with real-time monitoring, show promise in reducing DPM concentrations in the mine environment.

Theory and practice are described for a new processing method capable of precise mineral separations based primarily on differences in particle specific gravities at specific gravity split points from 1.5 to 21.0 and beyond. Separations are analogous to those achieved using rotating heavy media, except that the effective specific gravity of the fluid is created magnetically using a relatively dilute, low-viscosity, water-based magnetic fluid. Results reported here for a large, laboratory flow-through separator include: 1) 99% grade with 97% recovery in single pass separation of a suite of heavy minerals from quartz at I0 kg/h, 14 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 2) 90% grade and recovery in single-pass separation of mixtures of sand-size, non-magnetic rutile (4.23 specific gravity) and zircon (4.72 specific gravity) at throughputs of 35 kg/h, 47 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 3) partition curves having Ep90-10 transition widths 5% or less of mineral specific gravities, and 4) essential confirmation of the theory.

The Coastal Water Authority's 2,740mm/2,590mm (108 in./102 in.) pipeline, known as the Northwest Lateral Project, will transport raw water from an existing pipeline over 14.3 km (8.9 miles) to the City of Houston's East Water Purification Plant. The new pipeline crosses under Houston Ship Channel and Greens Bayou in tunnels at approximately 30.5m (100 feet) and 25.9m (85 feet) depths, which present unique experiences in tunneling under open bodies of water in the Gulf Coast's soft ground conditions. An earth pressure balance TBM is being used for the deep tunnel sections where the ground demonstrates high overload factors and variable conditions ranging from clays to silty sands. This paper discusses the design approach for the tunnels and shafts, ground conditions, constructability, and selection of the primary lining system.

The current economic downturn has been at the center of media attention for several years. Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply-and-demand conditions, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. There have been numerous plant closings, project cancellations and employee layoffs. In this gloomy economic environment, it is easy to forget that the world?s gross domestic product (GDP) has more than doubled in real terms during the last 30 years. While current market turbulence may continue for some time, the long-term trend is unmistakably upward. Living standards are rising all over the world, thereby creating demand for food, clothing, transportation and housing. This translates into tremendous demand for the mining and mineral sectors. In the future, new capacity and plant expansions will be necessary to meet this need. These investments, which typically have a life span of 30-plus years, will have to be based on long-term economic considerations rather than current market conditions.

"Modern society demands much more from the mining industry than just the raw materials it produces. In addition to providing copper, gold, coal and other minerals that make society function, the industry must conduct its operations in a safe and environmentally sustainable manner. This includes the equipment used and the engines that power the machines.In the United States, Tier 4 diesel engine standards that were set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are the strictest emissions requirement for off-highway diesel engines. This requirement regulates the amount of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that can be emitted from an off-highway diesel engine. In Europe, the Euro V standards are driving technology advancement in the sector.The European Euro V standards are required for new equipment manufactured beginning in January 2019. U.S. Tier 4 standards for heavy-duty off-road engines came into effect with model-year 2014 vehicles and equipment. China 6 standards come into effect in July 2020. India’s Bharat Stage VI standards will take full effect in 2020, and the phase-in of BSVIcompliant clean fuels began in April 2018.Caterpillar, Cummins and MTU are three of the leading manufacturers of engines for the mining sector. Each company is working toward creating efficient engines that can function in the often harsh environments found at openpit and underground mines around the world. In short, society is placing demands that are challenging engine manufacturers to deliver a product that can do more work while consuming less fuel and emitting fewer emissions.Technologies range from selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to other engine strategies and emissions control technologies, which deliver near-zero black carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines is conducting an assessment of mineral resources in the 36,800 km2 Mimbres Resource Area, southwestern New Mexico. Included in the assessment is a literature-based evaluation of sand and gravel that utilizes third party geologic information. The USGS has developed a method based on existing 1:500,000 scale geologic maps supplemented by remote sensing, statistical models, and point data such as test hole or pit records. The method defines the areal extent, quality, and quantity of aggregate.

"While Wearable Technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply Wearable Technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry. This paper discusses the value proposition of using Wearable Technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to Wearable Technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear™, the first Wearable Technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear™ is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on their primary task, and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. INTRODUCTION The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: time-critical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the Interruption, Reaction, and Comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction, and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, E. 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing, and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (see Figure 1). Contextual information is relevant information that is valuable for the receiver to be aware of as it can present an opportunity to improve efficiency or save cost. According to the IRC framework, contextual information is classified as low interruption, low reaction, and high comprehension. They are not as urgent as time-critical events, but provides more detailed and informative information to assist the receiver. For example, when a shovel’s worn tooth is predicted to require replacement soon, a notification to a GET technician can help him or her schedule a pre-emptive replacement of the tooth in an already planned maintenance to prevent having to reactively schedule another one when the tooth is critically worn. This helps reduce the amount of equipment downtime to maximize production (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the receiver will look at the information when he has a moment to spare to get a quick forecast, and make use of this information as needed (see Figure 2)."

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

Mine tailings, the byproduct of mining and mineral processing, are increasingly mass-produced as a result of increased demand for metals and minerals as well as the advancement in technology that allows for the exploitation of lower-grade ores. Lower grades can increase the volume of tailings that may contain new gangue minerals that should be evaluated for the presence of critical minerals and other valuable metals. The practice of reprocessing, while relatively new, is crucial to reducing environmental damages, obtaining valuable critical minerals from waste, and contributing to more sustainable repurposing and disposal methods. With the increase in tailings dam failures in recent years, there is a large motivating factor in remining and removing the potential hazard to benefit the safety of potentially impacted communities. In analyzing the perspectives of various domestic and international studies, this literature review will determine the feasibility of reprocessing and reutilizing mine tailings waste for a more sustainable future while exploring current practices that have benefitted ecosystems and communities.

Knight Piésold?s annual roundtable discussion was held at the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV on March 14. This year the title was, ?Roundtable discussion on material co-disposal/ co-placement in the mining industry.? This topic was chosen because of the benefits that the mining industry could realize through the advancement of improved methods of storing tailings and mine waste and from reducing short-and long-term environmental hazards while reducing the footprint of these facilities and making strides toward attaining a walk-away solution. Knight Piésold had a local representative, Bryan Ulrich, as well as representatives from its Denver, CO office, including Tom Kerr, president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, and Jeff Coffin, Ph.D., geotechnical engineer, to help facilitate the discussion. The event played host to about two dozen attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from more than 10 mining properties, various corporate offices and academia. The purpose of the roundtable was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to broad topics revolving around the subject of co-disposal/co-placement in the mining industry. Compared with traditional conferences and symposia, the roundtable forum tends to provide a less inhibited format for discussion. In the roundtable format, lively discussions and applicable tangential departures are encouraged. This was the seventh in the series of the Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to: ? Heap leach pad design, construction and operation. ? Design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities. ? Site-wide water considerations. ? Mine closure and cover design. ? Strides toward sustainability in mining. ? High-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings. Acid rock drainage for engineers and environmental scientists.
