In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

The construction of the continuing expansion of the Los Angeles Metro System has required the construction of eight new station structures. One contractor proposed, as a construction alternative for the support of excavation of the Hollywood/Vine Station, the use of soil-mix walls instead of the conventional soldier piles and wood lagging. Soldier piles and shotcrete or wood lagging support systems had been generally used on the other sub-way station excavations constructed to date throughout the system. Immediately east of that station and in almost exactly the same geology, the Hollywood/Western Station was being excavated at the same time using a conventional support system. This paper com-pares the performance of these two support systems in the alluvial soils of the Los Angeles Basin.

Productivity achievements in underground coal mining over the past ten years highlight the improvement of management practices as well as the adoption of new technology. Research findings and results from operational studies characterize the aspects of good management that translate into high productivity. In concert with these findings, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed, under co-sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University Energy and Water Research Center, as a knowledge-based system to enhance more efficient management of underground coal mines. Concentrating on capturing the intricate knowledge needed to manage a mine effectively, MMSS will encompass information and rules on work scheduling, desired work practices, regulations impinging on operations and planning, responses to operating problems, and the labor-management work agreement.

"The most important impact on the environment of a tunnel excavation is the creation of surface settlements. Nowadays, the mechanized tunneling allows minimizing the settlements, applying a confinement pressure which counterbalances the ground de-confinement. It is thus essential to determine the correct amount of confinement pressure. In this paper, the authors present a 3D numerical study simulating the EPB-TBM excavation of a water tunnel, in the Flanders clays (north of France). Firstly, a simplified 3D simulation, based on the concept of instantaneous longitudinal settlement curve, was performed to predict the surface settlements for different values of heading confinement pressures. Secondly, the same pressures were tested by the EPB-TBM in a monitoring zone. The comparison between the prediction settlements and the measurements was very satisfactory and allowed validation of the numerical approach and the choice of the optimal confinement pressure value for a sensitive area of the project. INTRODUCTION The excavation of a tunnel can create displacements of the surrounding soil which may affect existing structures and generate unacceptable dysfunction. The development of the closed shield tunneling has permitted to reduce the volume loss generated around the excavation and consequently the surface settlements. In this case, as explained by different authors (Clough et al., 1985; Kastner et al., 1996; Mair and Taylor, 1997), the ground movements are influenced by the TBM works: the heading confinement pressure, the shield overcutting and conicity, the annular void grout injection parameters, the segment concrete lining rigidity, the consolidation of the grout. Hence, in the tunnel design, it is important to take into consideration these different processes of the excavation works to simulate correctly the tunneling process."

Room-and-pillar mining at the Big Island Mine uses narrow, yield (i.e., load transferring) pillars to achieve high resource recovery and productivity. Two flat-lying 3- to 3fi-meter (10- to 11fi-ft) seams are mined. The interburden between the seams is about 10 meters (33 ft) and the cover depth is 250 to 330 meters (820 to 1,080 ft).Most of the mining has been single-seam, but two-seam mining will begin in the near future. Yield pillars minimize stress transfer between the seams. However, it is important that good long-term stability be maintained to prevent subsidence over a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. Three stress issues impacting stability are discussed in this paper: (1) higher-than-gravity vertical pre-mining stresses, (2) time-dependent stress transfer or arching, and (3) stresses induced by strata gas. Although the stress environment and behavior is not fully understood, steps have been taken in mine design and operations to minimize impacts to stability. Stress determinations have been very important to verify analytical predictions used in mine design and in long-term stability assessment.

INTRODUCTION For many years mining at the Stobie mine of the Inco Metals Co. consisted mainly of fill-type mining for higher grade ores and block caving or blasthole open stope mining for lower grade ores. Open stope mining, although quite favorable in the initial stoping phase, has always presented problems in the pillar recovery phase, especially at depth. In 1966, sublevel caving was introduced. This method is ideally suited for low-grade ore and can be applied very successfully to intermediate or higher grade ores providing proper controls are enforced. Sublevel caving has three distinct advantages: it is highly adaptable to mechanization; it recovers the ore in one operation; and it provides adequate ground sup¬port and safety regardless of mining depth. This method does, however, make extra demands, particularly for new types of supporting services. The constant presence of rock makes quality control of the grade of the ore being extracted essential. Increased de¬velopment, different types of ventilation, roadways, and maintenance are only a few of the many changes re¬quired. The care and maintenance of the fleets of diesel equipment and the modification of equipment is a con¬stant challenge. CHOICE OF SUBLEVEL CAVING The question arises, why mine by sublevel caving? Fig. 1 shows a typical problem encountered by the open stope or blasthole mining method. Near the surface there is little or no ground support problem. As mining progresses to an intermediate depth, however, ground failure starts to occur in the supporting pillars. If open mining is carried beyond this point, the critical depth is soon reached, accompanied by hanging wall caving, ex¬tensive pillar failure, and the danger of losing control of the mining cycle. The rock caved from the hanging wall mixes with and dilutes the ore being extracted from the blasthole stopes. Ore losses occur when pillar failure pre¬vents drilling and development of part of the ore. The interruption to the mining cycle causes serious curtail¬ment in production until ground failure is controlled and the mining method changed to adapt to the new conditions. Having recognized the limitations of open stope min¬ing, alternatives were sought. The first alternative (Fig. 2) was to fill the open stopes with sand fill be¬fore extensive pillar deterioration occurred, recover the pillar ore by fill mining, and then convert to total fill mining below. If the ore grade is high enough it can support the costly fill method. Recovery will be at a much slower rate and will therefore extend over a longer period of time. On the other hand, sublevel caving gives complete primary mining recovery in a short time and is very adaptable to mechanization, which is now a necessity to combat spiralling labor costs and give greater produc¬tivity per man. Sublevel caving is ideally suited as a mining method for low-grade ore bodies which eventually reach a criti¬cal depth for open stope mining. DEVELOPMENT The development phase comes first and of course its main purpose is to gain access to the ore and provide a route for ore removal from the mine. Initially a 20% inclined service ramp is driven in the footwall rock (Figs. 3, 4, and 5). It is preferable to start at the top of a mining block and drive the ramp down¬ grade so gravity can assist in mucking the blasted de¬velopment round, and also access can be gained more quickly to the initial production area. The ramp nor¬mally turns at 3.1 rad (180°) about every 152.4 m (500 ft) to keep it reasonably close to the rock disposal

Remote control for mining machines ordinarily means the operator is not seated on the machine, but is located within direct view of the machine and work area Thus, remote control operators are exposed to the hazards of roof/rib falls and dust/methane explosions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to disassociate remote operators from these hazards. Off-board, computer-based "tele-operational" systems are utilized that station the operators one-hundred meters or more distant from the working faces. Details are provided for tele-operated systems for thin-seam extraction and haulage equipment in highwall and deep, room-and-pillar coal mines.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application. "Dust generated on underground mechanized coal mining faces is a health and safety hazard. Continuous miners deployed underground usually have an integrated flooded-bed dust scrubber mounted onto the machine that arrests the generated dust from close to the face and cleanses the air around it. However, the impingement screen might get clogged depending on the coal seam being worked. This necessitates the cleaning of the screen which in turn, reduces the overall availability of the scrubber and, hence the continuous miner. A novel non-clogging screen has been developed at the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Kentucky. The proposed impingement screen is built up of three individual aluminum screen units 1.5 mm thick and separated by 3 and 2 mm respectively. The screens have long vertical slits measuring 6 mm. A water spray continuously keeps the screen wet and provides for the filter element to arrest the dust particles. The slits force the dust-laden air to make sharp turns. The dust particles cannot change directions rapidly, impact one of the three screens and are separated out based on their momentum. Preliminary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have indicated significant cleaning efficiencies in the respirable range at the expense of much lower pressure drops. Results indicated by CFD models and supported by laboratory experiments have been discussed in this paper.ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The authors acknowledge the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for funding this research. The miners are operated against bling headings, ensuring adequate flow of air at the face could be difficult. The minimum requirement of ventilation airflow quantities at those coal faces are legislated to dilute dust generated to harmless levels. New dust rules promulgated recently have further called for lower exposure levels of personnel working underground (Courtney) (MSHA, 2014) (NIOSH, 2010). Water sprays are also installed at strategic locations and serve as powerful air-movers. The sprays capture some amount of dust generated while cutting. In addition to this, usually, all continuous miners are equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber as shown in Figure 1 to capture the dust from close to the extraction drum (Chao & De-sheng, 2000) (Wala, Vytla, Huang, & Taylor, 2008) (Organiscak & Beck, 2010)."

The 15 000 t/d La Coipa mine initiated operation in July of 1991. The complex consists of a conventional, open-pit mining operation and a mill employing cyanide leaching with Merrill-Crowe gold and silver recovery. The process plant includes a primary crushing circuit, a 15,000 t (live) covered stockpile, a semi-autogenous mill/ball mill/crusher or SABC grinding circuit, a leach circuit, a belt filtration/washing circuit, a zinc precipitation circuit and a "dry" tailing disposal system. The process plant is described in detail with major design considerations used in the selection of the processes and equipment. The unique methodology employed in the disposal of the filtered tailings is also described.

The Navajo Mine is exclusively a multiple seam surface coal mine located in the northwest corner of New Mexico, and entirely on the Navajo Indian Reservation (Figure 1). It is owned and operated by the Broken Hill Propriety Co., Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia. The mine began production in January 1963 with a long term fuel supply agreement with the Four Corners Power Plant. The 2175 MW nominal generating capacity of the Four Corners Power Plant consumes 8-8.5 mm tons of coal annually. With estimated reserves totaling 1.1 billion tons of strippable coal, only one third is presently committed to the generating station. As development has continued over the years, mining operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas to satisfy the utilities demand for coal.

Although the mineral shortages of twelve to eighteen months ago have given way to oversupply, their memory lingers on. These problems were man-made: booming demand throughout the industrial world, political and industrial unrest and the oil embargo all contributed. But in the minds of many, the shortages conjured up visions of the depletion of the world&apos;s mineral resources, a disaster that could be staved off only by drastic curbs on consumption and therefore, curbs on economic growth. A little historical research shows that fears such as this are not inventions of the 1970&apos;s. A hundred years ago, for example, the imminent exhaustion of the world&apos;s coal supplies was being predicted in Great Britain. The English economist, John Stuart Mill, who was usually more perceptive, wrote a few years earlier that "it is only in the backward countries of the world that increased production is still an important object". And later there was Franklin Roosevelt who said in 1932, "Our industrial plant is built; the problem just now is whether under existing conditions, it is not overbuilt". His concern, in other words, was not with the discovery and exploitation of new natural resources, but with the administration of known resources and with seeking foreign markets for surplus production. In light of copper prices at the time -- just under 6¢ a pound -- that was understandable. These instances illustrate how, throughout the world&apos;s industrial history, concern about surpluses of raw materials has alternated with alarm about the adequacy of supplies and with calls for restricting growth.

The mine’s economic life is dynamic by nature. Some factors that create this scenario are the need to recognize new exploitation areas, the evolution of the mineral prices and the development of new technologies to access them. The dynamics of mining development, especially in the underground environment, changes significantly as the stages unfold. In many cases the final solution differs greatly with the initial. The frequent presence of new conditions and factors often cause the mine to develop in a quasi-permanent transition stage, which could be characterized by the generation of dynamic micro-seismic events that could cause rockburst damage in some specific areas. Although they may be infrequent, these dynamic events can have an important adverse impact on mine safety and causes serious losses. Also, changes in the production schedule during exploitation could be a big issue if the problem is not effectively addressed. When the transition of the mine to an active micro-seismic environment begins as an unforeseen scenario, it is frequent to use static ground support systems as they are readily available. Traditionally, the support systems used are reinforced shotcrete with a middle layer of Welded Standard Wire Mesh (WSWM) and Chain Link Standard Wire Mesh (CSWM) of reduced gauges, i.e. wires less or equal than 4 mm in diameter. Although, this support system is used to control static instability problems, there is no good reference of its energy absorption capacity under dynamic load conditions, creating uncertainty in the effectiveness of controlling rockburst events. These support systems are analyzed at the present paper, testing the reinforced shotcrete layer with 4 mm diameter of WSWM and CSWN under dynamic load. Additionally, the influence of the use of high tensile strength steel wire in the meshes (HSWM) compared to the previous ones, is analyzed to assess the scope in controlling rockburst events and keeping the safety of underground environment.

Batu Hijau is a new copper and gold mine located on the island of Sumbawa in the Republic of Indonesia. This paper details the design and construction of the Batu Hijau overland conveyor, one of the most challenging efforts of the project. The 1.8 m wide, 5.6 km long conveyor has a design capacity of over 10,000 mtph and carries primary crushed ore through the steep mountains of Sumbawa, which necessitated a 160 m vertical downhill section, a 75 m vertical uphill section, ten vertical curves and one horizontal curve.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970&apos;s that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960&apos;s. In the early 1970&apos;s a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. "In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin. The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill. The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and then two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator’s station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt and mesh sump. The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in turn lowers the miners’ roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator’s exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely. INTRODUCTION When mining underground it is necessary to support the roof quickly to prevent it from collapsing after an area has been mined. Since the 1950s, the primary method for supporting the roof has been the installation of roof bolts. Roof bolting is one of the most basic functions yet one of the dangerous jobs in the underground mining operation (1). The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Health and Safety Accident Classification injury database showed an average of 660 roof bolter operator accidents per year over a 5-year period (1999-2003) (2). The numbers show that roof bolting is the most hazardous machine-related job in underground mining. It represents 39 percent of all machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. In 1993, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study that has shown the activity of drilling as the most hazardous job task performed by a roof bolter operator, accounting for 31 percent of all roof bolting injuries (3). Almost half (46%) of these drilling injuries were due to falling rocks or coal from the roof. All of these injuries occurred under supported roof. The majority of these injuries (about 99%) are not caused by a major roof collapse but from falls of smaller rock from the immediate roof. This type of roof failure has also been termed “skin fall.”"

Manganese is about twelfth in the list of the most abundant elements in the earth&apos;s crust (Reidies, 1981). More than 150 known minerals contain manganese as an essential constituent (Mellor, 1932). In general, ores containing at least 35%Mn are classified as manganese ores, ores with 10-35%Mn are called ferroginous manganese ores, and ores containing 5-10%Mn are known as manganiferrous ores. One very important class of manganiferrous ores are manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the Western United States. Silver is very often associated with manganese oxides which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, which is known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (10-1500oz Ag/ton) and in volcanic rocks (less than 1.0oz Ag/ton).

Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.
