Traction of mining vehicles is well understood for a variety of unfrozen road surfaces, allowing optimal design of mine access and haulage roads. However, no such characterizations exist for the frozen or partially frozen surfaces typically encountered in Northern regions. Recent work by U. S. Army researchers suggests methods for characterizing roadway traction for any vehicle on the basis of test measurements made with a standard test vehicle. Such a test vehicle was designed, and several sets of test data were recorded at the onset of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska. This work suggests methods for future research and possibilities for the use of such research in designing drive systems, tires, and mine roads for Arctic and sub-Arctic mines.

In the spring of 1959 while visiting the offices of the US Geological Survey (USGS) in the Denver Federal Center, I had a chance encounter with Paul Theobold, a former but, at that time, casual associate. Paul mentioned to me the results of his work on stream sediment geochemistry (Theobold and Thompson, 1959). Using panned concentrates, Theobold and Thompson had discovered a tungsten anomaly in Clear Creek and followed it upstream to its source on Woods Creek, a small tributary to the West Fork of Clear Creek. The specific source was a debris cone about 0.8 km (0.5 mile) upstream from the mine yard at the Urad molybdenite deposit. Because of the genetic and zonal association of tungsten and molybdenum at Climax, I found this very interesting. Accordingly, I related this information to Robert Henderson, general manager of western operations for Climax, and asked his permission to do some follow-up work. He, in turn, telephoned Frank Coolbaugh, the president of Amax, telling him of my interest and saying that, "Climax would take care of it." On my first visit to Urad, my companions (Dave Jonson, Bruce MacKenzie, and Dick Baker) and I were confronted by a "Cousin Jack" caretaker who made up for his diminutive stature by a "pistolover" that hung down almost to his knee and by a watchdog that was one-half wolf and one-half mean sled dog. We retreated discretely to Clear Creek and then climbed up the "back" side of Red Mountain by separate routes, across the ridge crest, and part of the way down the "front" side, sampling as we went. Although much of the ground was covered with snow, we found lots of puzzling but friendly looking rocks and the geochemical results were interesting. It is the task of this portion of today's session on the new meaning of regional tectonics in the search for ore districts to discuss known interactions of tectonics and ore deposition in the 'new global tectonics' context. I will speak particularly about known applications of the recent tectonic advances to ore finding. Stated yet another way, it's getting on in time toward the "put up or shut up" stage-¬and I would not be here if I thought that the new tectonics were not an effective present matrix for ore finding. Before delving into specific geologic relationships--and I propose to discuss mainly the evolution of an idea which may reveal the presence of a major copper deposit on mainland Mexico--I must note that there have been no published accounts that I know of which assert that a particular discovery has been made soley and specifically because of an interpretation based upon mechanisms directly linked to sea floor spreading or plate tectonics. It is nonetheless true" that several major exploration efforts are based upon such interpretations, and, as is normal when exploration ideas are involved, one does not wish to call attention to an advantageous position in a highly competitive business. Little might be expected to have been announced in so fast-moving and potentially lucrative an area. Another point which needs to be made is that people such as B. S. Butler (1933), Billingsley and Locke (1935 and 1941), Harrison Schmitt (1935), and more recently Mayo (1958) have been working for decades with the tectonic expressions of the emergent tectonics without recog¬nition of the driving forces or the unifying tectonic concepts

Following a severe recession in the early 1980's, mining companies have taken significant steps to improve metallurgy and reduce operating costs. They do not view chemical reagents and the long-term relationship with reagent producers the same way they did two decades ago. This paper discusses the general perspective of changes that have taken place over the years, especially with respect to cost of production, selling price and environmental constraints. A cooperative program between the consumers and producers of chemical reagents is recommended to understand each other's problems and identify the present and future needs of the mining industry. This approach will be beneficial to the long-term survival of both parties.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. The Cienega project, now under construction by Penoles group, is located in the mountains of the State of Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in the 4-km long system of veins, which will be extracted by underground methods. The planned 1000 tpd process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994.

The leaching of heaps or sub-marginal waste ore dumps as it is practiced throughout the Southwest as well as other parts of the world, is the major method of secondary recovery of copper. In 1970, twenty percent of all domestic copper was produced by dump leaching operations (l). In recent years, this method has been successfully extended on a limited scale, for the recovery of uranium from low-grade ores (2). It is inevitable that this technique will be increasingly employed in metal production to satisfy the insatiable demand of our mineral based society. Although dump and heap leaching has been used effectively for some time (3) , its application has been more of an art than a science. Therefore, it is essential that we learn about the important factors and parameters affecting this versatile process so that we may make increasing use of this technique in the future. The dump or heap leaching process encompasses the preparation of ore for-subsequent inplace leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through porous rock masses, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and, if possible, regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the inplace environment, and the recovery of metals from the pregnant liquors. It is evident that this comprehensive scope of dump or heap leaching falls under the realm of interdisciplinary science and engineering requiring the application of the principles of physics, mineral engineering, hydrology, computer modeling, operations research, economics, and allied disciplines. "Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"

Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.

The paper deals with highly efficient dust collecting systems of the 10-600 type which constitute new generation installations de- signed to eliminate dust hazard in headings driven with roadheaders. A vortex ventube controlling the air flow in the com- bined ventilation system by means of air vortex generated by the ventube drive unit is also presented. From the results of measurements of under-roof concentrations of methane it appears that the application of the vortex ventube makes it possible to decrease the under-roof accumulation of methane more than 10 times.

This paper is devoted to a discussion of the factors governing design of concentrators for large grinding circuits. Emphasis is placed on the manner in which use of ever larger grinding mills has affected the size of grinding bays, service cranes, gear reducers and electric motors, and the selection of ancillary equipment for cushioning of the starting load of large mills. Information is presented on the effect of using large grinding mills on the capital and operating costs of concentrators, e. g. : (Fig. 1) ? Benefits in lower cost of mills, drives and materials handling equipment, plant space, power, grinding media, operating labor and maintenance, and in ease of instrumentation and automation. ? Penalties in distribution of materials from the grinding mills to multiple lines of equipment which have not been developed to commensurately large sizes, and higher cost of ancillary equipment.

A field investigation was undertaken to study some of the. chemical and hydrological aspects of leaching an impermeable copper sulfide waste dump. Samples, obtained by means of a Becker pneumatic drill from Kennecott's Chino "J" dump, near Silver City, New Mexico, were analyzed for their moisture and soluble-salt content, Fe +2 , Fe +3, Cu +2 , and H in their interstitial solutions and non-water - soluble Fe, Cu, and S in their rinsed residues. Conclusions were drawn from these data concerning the overall chemistry of impermeable-dump leaching and the hydrological characteristics of the dump.

Twenty-six insitu analyses of cubic galena crystals from a Mississippi Valley-type deposit were undertaken with a laser microprobe spectrograph to study the variation of nine trace elements from the crystal center to its periphery, both along the diagonal and vertical. The general trend is an increase in the concentrations of Ag, Ga, Ge, and In with As showing the opposite trend Bi, Cd and Sn did not show any pattern. Sb was not detected. These variation patterns nay serve as a model for similar studies of other Mississippi Valley-type deposits.

Prior laboratory work has demonstrated -that much of the fine ash-forming minerals entering a flotation froth are there as a result of water carry-over from the bulk contents of the flotation cell (Arnold and Aplan, 1986a). Using a bank of four 300 cu ft WEMCO flotation cells cleaning a well-liberated Lower Kittanning seam coal, test results show that the sulfur and ash content of the froth is directly related to the water content of the froth (or inversely related to the percent of solids in the froth). Reagent changes which result in a watery froth produce a higher ash content in the froth. A direct comparison of laboratory and plant results show that the standard laboratory flotation test produces a product higher in sulfur and ash than that produced in the plant. Caution should be exercised when extrapolating laboratory test results to the plant situation. A method of estimating coal flotation product quality in the plant based on laboratory tests is given.

Trona ore at the Westvaco mine of FMC Corporation has been obtained by room- and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat-lying, 10-foot bed of trona, Na2CO3 NaHCO3 2H2O, is covered by 1500 feet of weak shale and sandstone. Extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early 60's forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans' were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. Roof cones troy in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and--pillar techniques. It was therefore felt that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.

"INTRODUCTION As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. Over the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed, validated, and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) for the safe design of underground coal mines with respect to ground control. While these programs were initially developed on a, “stand alone model,” where all program data resides on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a, “multiple-tier model,” allowing multiple users to access an application through an Internet connection. webGroundControl provides users with access to NIOSH ground control design software (ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS) utilizing a web-based three-tier architecture allowing users to easily access ground control designs, perform on-demand calculations, and provide online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. Given advancements in cloud computing as well as the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, webGroundControl users will be able to access the applications anywhere (where permissible) at any time. As web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains popularity and momentum, there is an industry need to develop Internet based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). The purpose of this paper is to introduce and familiarize those in the mining industry with the basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of the webGroundControl application. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE With the advent of cloud computing, web-based applications have become more popular with their adoption of multiple-tier, or n-tier, architecture containing independently operating tiers. The three-tier application architecture utilized in webGroundControl (as outlined in Agioutantis and Newman, 2016) contains a Presentation Tier (Web Server), Logic Tier (Logic/Application Server), and Data Tier (Data Server) as shown in Figure 1. While tiers have the ability to be deployed across and operating on multiple servers, webGroundControl is currently being deployed on a single server located on a university desktop computer. The separation of the application into a series of tiers greatly increases the maintainability and scalability allowing for the adoption of new technologies that can be applied to a single tier without redesigning the software package. The Presentation Tier maintains the user interface translating client requests (through a web server) and displaying results (through a web browser). The Presentation Tier allows for on-demand access from multiple users and compatibility with a variety of personal computers, Smartphones, tablets, etc. on different operating systems. The Presentation Tier has been developed with respect to the HTML and JavaScript languages. Through the utilization of CSS, a coding language which describes the style of an HTML document, the webGroundControl display is able to spontaneously adapt to any browser and any screen. The development of the Presentation Tier will be discussed in more detail in subsequent sections of this paper."

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. Currently, the major markets for scrubber sludge are for manufacture of gypsum products, such as wallboard and plaster, and for cement. However, the quality of the raw sludge is often not high enough or consistent enough to satisfy manufacturers, and so the material is difficult to sell. Other markets, such as paper manufacture and plastics fillers, have even more stringent quality requirements and will not accept raw sludge at all. In the work described in this paper, several reagents have been examined to determine their ability to selectively improve the flotation of the unreacted limestone contaminant away from the desirable products (calcium sulfite and gypsum). The most success has been achieved using a cationic collector, which shows a higher selectivity between calcium sulfite and calcium carbonate than do the anionic collectors that were studied.

A study of coal pillar strength was done at the Beehive Mine during a three year period, 1974?1977, in a cooperative effort involving the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company (Pariseau et al, 1977). The Beehive Mine is located in the Wasatch Plateau coal field in central Utah near Orangeville, Utah, where mines are developed from outcrops between steep canyon walls with topographic relief of a kilometer or so (3,600 ft). Coal is found in Cretaceous sediments that dip gently to the west. Detailed geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972). Mining was done in the Blind Canyon seam. An earlier Deseret Mine worked the Hiawatha seam that is lower in the stratigraphic column by about 36 m (120 ft). Mining progress and ownership changes occurred in time with mine mergers and name changes eventually to the collective Des-Bee-Dove label. At the Beehive Mine, depth varied with topography but was approximately 360 m (1200 ft) on average; seam thickness varied from 1.5 to 6 m (5 to 20 ft) and usually required two passes of the miner. The mine was eventually closed and finally reclaimed in 2003. Semborski and Oakley (2006) present a brief history of the mine and describe the reclamation work in some detail. Figure 1 shows the surface topography in the vicinity of the mine that is in the center of the figure.

Bacteria, algae and fungi react to heavy metals in their environment by immobilizing, mobilizing and/or transforming metals. Microorganisms carry out these changes by (1) precipitating metals outside of the microbial cell, (2) binding and complexing metals to the outside of the microbial cell's protective coating, (3) accumulating metals inside of the microbial cell, or (4) transforming metals by oxidation, reduction, methylation or demethylation. Most of these mechanisms are operative in constructed aerobic and anaerobic wetlands for metal's remediation. Several more advanced biotechnologies for metal's removal from aqueous streams have been introduced, but have not been widely accepted commercially.
