"In this paper, a case study from Çayeli Bakir Isletmeleri A.S. (Rize, Turkey) about the selective flotation of copper minerals from sphalerite is discussed. Çayeli Cu-Zn Sulfide Ore contains different ore types, such as yellow ore, clastic ore, bornite-clastic ore, bornite-yellow ore, and black ore. For some of these ore types, selective flotation of copper and zinc is very difficult presumably due to presence of secondary copper minerals such as bornite, chalcocite and covellite, and also surface oxidation. These factors affect Cu-Zn selectivity due to activation of sphalerite particles in the ore during the process. The main objective of this work was to improve Cu-Zn selectivity by optimization of the pulp chemistry for different ore types of Çayeli ore. After preliminary flotation tests investigating effects of different chemical conditions, a plant survey was performed to determine the plant performance and sources of the problems when problematic bornite-clastic ore is treated in the plant. Various chemical conditions are tested in the laboratory scale test for better depression of sphalerite in copper flotation circuit. Combination of Na2S+ZnSO4+MBS was found to be the most effective depressant scheme. INTRODUCTION Ore variability is one of the most important factors affecting performance of a process plant both in short and long term planning. The geometallurgical modelling becomes a common tool to determine ore variability problems and develop the most efficient solution during life of mine (1, 2). Flowsheet design and equipment selection and sizing are usually done based on the results of ore variability test works. However, in some cases ore variability may not be foreseen during the design stage and therefore the solutions should be developed based on the existing flowsheet and equipment in the plant. In this situation, ore characterisation, problem statement and diagnostic testing should be applied step by step. The problem could be due to changing feed grade, mineralogical characteristics, grindability and surface characteristics when flotation is involved. The variability in feed grade with fixed mineralogy can be handled with relatively simple modifications (i.e. adjusting throughput or equipment capacity) in the plant. Variability in ore mineralogy is the most complex and difficult problem to tackle. Because, mineralogical variations could bring variations in mineral composition, texture and liberation. These variations can potentially lead to the variations in grindability of the ore and flotation behaviour. Variations in grindability are usually managed by optimization of operational parameters in grinding circuit, as it would be costly to replace the existing equipment in the circuit (3). The variations in flotation behaviour are mainly due to variations in mineral types and distribution, texture and surface oxidation. One or all of these factors could be observed in a flotation operation. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation both in plant and lab scale should be conducted for definition of source of the problem. The testwork to solve the problem and retrieve the performance is planned and conducted depending on the source of the problem (4, 5)."

An example illustrates the use of ASTM Standard E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources. The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that ,remain in fixing the classification of a given uranium resource include the uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving the differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

Geostatistics is well known as a tool for ore reserves calculations at the exploration stage. The goal of this paper is to show geoscatistics can also contribute to productivity gains, allow better selection of the mining methods and better control of the grades during production. The first two examples show how geostatistics can provide sophisticated models, using conditional simulations and the use of them for simulations or optimizations of mining processes. A third example will show how to use geostatistics for short term planning in a large polymetallic vein type mine.

LKAB's Kiruna mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is one of the world's largest underground mines, and it is one of the most modern. The Kiruna orebody is a high-grade magnetite containing about 80% low-phosphorous iron ore and about 20% high-phosphorous iron ore in situ. The mining method used is large-scale sublevel caving. Due to the blending of high-phosphorous ore with low-phosphorous ore during the extraction process, only about 20% of the run-of-mine ore can be used for the mine's low-phosphorous product. The blending process is highly irregular and difficult for the mine-planning personnel to predict. An algorithm was developed that uses principles of gravity flow to predict the run-of-mine phosphorous grades from the in situ geologic block model. The model can be used for both long- and short-term predictions.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional tailing storage and management practices typically utilize engineered facilities, such as ring dikes and valley impoundments. To reduce the environmental costs associated with disposing of mine wastes in tailing storage facilities (TSFs), several beneficial re-use strategies have been developed over the years. For example, thickened tailings have been used for paste backfill. It is common for tails to comprise up to 60% of the material’s total weight and it has been estimated that TSF volumes can be reduced by 60% when using this strategy, (Benzaazoua, et al. 2004). Other beneficial re-use strategies have produced unpaved temporary access roads, hot and cold asphalt, chip seals, self-compacting concrete, and golf course sand traps. This project sampled mine tailings from two different TSFs in Colorado and produced structural concrete that could potentially be used for commercial foundations, sidewalks, and paved roads. The tailings were substituted for the fine aggregates typically found in conventional concrete. The two main objectives of this study were to investigate the structural integrity of the produced concrete samples and the leaching of heavy metals from the resulting concrete. The ratio of tailings to fine aggregate (T/FA) was carefully studied to find if there was a correlation between the substitution rate and the structural integrity. The potential maximum substitution rate was also investigated for the produced concrete specimens. The potential of leaching mining impacted water (MIW) was evaluated by comparing the leachability of the raw mine tailings to the encapsulated tailings by using standard shake extraction prediction tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Materials The four components that make up the concrete mix design for this project are: cement, coarse aggregate (gravel), fine aggregate (sand and mine tailings), and water. The type I/II ordinary Portland cement (OPC), gravel, and sand came from local cement and concrete companies in Denver, Colorado. Mine tailings were collected from two different TSFs in the Rocky Mountain Region, where Pride of the West TSF in Silverton, CO will be denoted as Site A. The primary metals of interest at the mill site are gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc. The location of Site B will not be mentioned in this report due to confidentiality agreements with the mining company"

In this study, the effect of cations, Na+ and Mg2+, in saline water on copper flotation in the presence of calcium bentonite was investigated. It was found that as the concentration of NaCl was increased, the copper recovery initially decreased and then increased to above 99%, while the copper grade initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, as the concentration ofMgCl2 was increased, the copper recovery continuously increased, while the copper grade continuously decreased. The variation of copper recovery and grade was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of pulp rheology and flotation solution chemistry. The underpinning mechanisms are the compressing electrical double layer and ion-exchange interaction between saline water and bentonite, which occur at the same time. Using salinewater slightly affected the pulp rheologywith a decrease in copper recovery at low NaCl concentration. Increasing the concentration of cations in saline water might even facilitate the flowing out of exchangeable cations, especially divalent cations, from the interlayer space of bentonite to the solution, resulting in the decrease of copper grade at high salt concentration.

The paper describes investigations carried out over a period of en years and highlights the problems associated with waste lump leaching in a tropical and seismic active region. With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has entered into a $l.5 million Cooperative Agreement with Alpine Equipment Corporation/Astro International Corporation ("Alpine") of State College, Pennsylvania, for the evaluation of water-jet-assisted (WJA) mechanical cutting of oil shale under actual mining conditions. A commercial-sized, heavy WJA mechanical miner is being assembled based upon the successful "factory testing" of a smaller prototype miner utilizing standard tungsten-carbide and Polycrystalline Diamond Composite (POC) bits in large oil shale boulders. Actual field testing of the machine will be conducted in an oil shale mine located in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado. In-mine logistical support is being provided by several oil shale companies through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM).

"Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) Segmental Tunnel Linings have successfully been used for over 20 years in the UK and have been adopted in a number of high profile projects such as High Speed 1, Crossrail, Thames Tideway, as well as High Speed 2. Tunnel linings and especially SFRC design are not covered in the Eurocodes. This shortage of SFRC tunnel design rules seems to be partially addressed by several international publications. However, in the UK, the ‘design-assisted by testing’ (DAT) approach has also been adopted. The Paper discusses the UK’s best design practice and focuses on the DAT methodology as applied in the case of the 6.9km (4.3miles), 7.8m (25.6 feet) ID Lining for the £635million Lee Tunnel Project. The design approach, the full scale testing at the Building Research Establishment (BRE), and the construction innovations are presented. This experience will be transferred to the £4billion Thames Tideway Tunnel.INTRODUCTIONSteel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) has been used for Tunnel segments for more than 20 years. The first application of SFRC in the UK was for the Heathrow Baggage tunnel (1994). Since then significant size tunnels have been designed and constructed, such as the Jubilee Line (1999) High Speed 1 (CTRL, 2006), Crossrail (2014), Lee Tunnel (2014) and the scheduled 25km Thames Tideway (‘Super Sewer’) and High Speed 2 rail tunnels. However one the main obstacles in achieving streamlined design and improving efficiency are the lack of appropriate design guidelines for SFRC tunnel segments. This issue will – to some extent – be addressed by a number of current documents on tunnel FRC design either being produced by BSi (PAS8810, expected 2016), ACI (544.R) and ITAtech (Design Guideline PCFRC, 2015) in an effort to advance the design of SFRC and take into consideration the recent developments in Steel and Macro-Synthetic FRC technology."

The generation and transportation of the airborne dust are mainly governed by the velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face. Generally speaking, the higher the air velocity, the more the airborne dust will be generated and the longer the period of the dust of certain size will be carried away from the source. In order to effectively prevent the production and the spread of the airborne dust, The airborne dust concentration distribution in the longwall face must be known in advance. Before the dust concentration distribution can he predicted theoretically with confidence, the air velocity distribution pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face area must be determined first. However, the complicated, time-dependent and unpredictable mining conditions along and around the face area make the theoretical studies of the problem rather difficult. For instance, one of the factors commonly affecting the air velocity distribution at the longwall face is the air leakage, either into or from the gob area. The leakage quantity and the location of occurrence differ from mine to mine, face to face, and time to time. They depend not only on the compactness of the caved roof fragments in the gob, but also on the degree of obstructions in the working space and in the return entry. Another obstacle to the theoretical studies about the velocity distrbution is the complicated boundary conditions of the ventilated spnce which is very difficult to represent accurately in mathematical forms. In this paper, the air velocity distributions measured in four longwall faces are presented. A statistical model for each longwall face is also derived for prediction of air velocity distribution in the longwall face.

A brief literature review on metal separations by ion exchange and solvent extraction of their thiocyanate complexes which are practiced in analytical chemistry as well as in industries was performed. Owing to the poor stability of free thiocyanic acid in acidic aqueous and organic media, technical and environmental problems which cause high thiocyanate consumptions often arise during the practice of the separation processes. This prompted the conducting of a second and more thorough literature review on the chemistry of thiocyanic acid. The objectives of this undertaking are to compile and interpret literature data on the physical properties and chemical reactions of thiocyanic acid, thus providing a clearer understanding of the causes of these problems and giving options as to how to minimize them. The best answer found for carrying out the separation processes is to keep the temperature, thiocyanic acid concentration and total acidity as low as practical.

With the ever increasing demand for Finer powders by industry there has been a continuing effort by air classifier manufacturers to improve and offer machinery capable of producing these fine powders. Common to these classifiers is the use of a multivaned rotor through which passes all of the air used to transport the particles to be classified. Rotor revolutions per minute and the amount of air passing through the rotor are the main variables in determining the particle sizes which will be able to pass through the spinning rotor. A simplified equation derived by setting the air drag force carrying a particle through the rotor equal to the centrifugal force due to the spinning rotor's action on the entering air and particle is: Diameter of Particle = [ ] Where K is a function of air viscosity, particle configuration, rotor and blade configuration; RPM is rotor revolutions per minute; M3/sec. is air quantity passing through the openings between the rotor blades.

Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

The molybdenite flotation plant at Magma Copper Company, San Manuel concentrator has been in operation since 1956. In January of 1980 the plant was converted from a hydrogen peroxide - ferrocyanide process to the current sodium cyanide - sodium hydrosulfide process. This paper is an operational review of Magma Copper Company's molybdenite recovery circuit, column cell flotation experience and use of on- stream x-ray flourescence analysis.

Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. "Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

"Wear of TBM tools significantly affects tunneling advance rates. Wear-prediction models are based (amongst others) on the abrasivity of the present geology, which is determined via laboratory tests. To evaluate the results from such tests in context, this work considers the tribological system TBM tool from a materials technology perspective. In so doing, the microstructures of different application-oriented materials are presented and discussed in terms of their wear behavior and wear resistance. The significant influence of tool materials on the abrasivity of the geology and thus wear prediction models has already be identified. LCPC, Cerchar and nano-scratch experiments have been performed as confirmation. Material-dependent wear mechanisms and their correlation in terms of tunneling have shown that it is mandatory to consider the complete tribological system to estimate the wear of TBM tools. 1 INTRODUCTION Mechanized tunneling is vital to ensure necessary infrastructure development in megacities like Tokyo (Bay Tunnel), Istanbul (Eurasia Tunnel) and Mexico City (Tunnel Emisor Oriente). The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has been established for many years. In contrast to other methods such as boring and blasting or excavation using dredgers, tunneling with TBMs allows simultaneous excavation and removal of both the mineral and tunnel lining by tubbing segments or shotcrete. This makes tunneling more efficient, allowing for faster development of the tunnel in both hard rock and soil [1]. When budgeting such tunneling projects, precise planning and coordination in terms of tunneling technique choice (e.g. EPB or Slurry-shield), the relevant geology, and the associated penetration rates and tool wear are required. In particular, wear to TBM tools has a significant impact on tunneling progress. Due to wear, tools become dulled or lose their functionality because of brittle material behavior, thus reducing penetration rates and therefore tunneling efficiency [1]. As a result, additional tool changes are necessary, leading to higher overall costs due to down times and maintenance costs. Therefore, there is strong interest in a reliable and precise wear prediction model for TBMs. As already mentioned, the geology and associated wear of the tunneling tools define the maintenance times."
