The work of engineers responsible for the design and performance of mine facilities is often challenged by economic and practical constraints in the field. Problems have developed in implementing design criteria dictated by persons or agencies not familiar with the dynamic nature of mine engineering. Regional and site-specific conditions frequently require changes to standard designs, or the use of a completely innovative approach, which is not provided for in the regulations. The implementation of engineering design, therefore, usually requires a hard-sell approach to management and regulatory agencies that allows for a happy-medium to all parties concerned. Flexibility on the part of the regulatory agencies is needed to solve operational and environmental problems with sound engineering. Typical hydrologic issues which will be discussed fall in the following general categories: ? Design criteria for sizing water control structures (i.e., culverts, diversion and sedimentation ponds, ditches, etc.) ? Implementation (construction and operation) difficulties ? Regulatory compliance ? Reclamation planning with hydrologic considerations ? Protection of groundwater resources

There are bound to be changes with age, so I should not have been surprised or disappointed when what I had considered as high ad- ventures were much fewer and more widely scattered in the last 20 years of my long and active business life. But such adventures came until I was past 80 years of age and no one could expect more than this. Frequent visits to mines in this country and Canada and directorships in Bralorne and its subsidiaries, Homestake Mining Co., Bradley Mining Co., and the Bunker Hill Co.; and Copper Range Co. and its great new White Pine mine in Michigan, lasted far beyond the usual retirement age. The least happy part of my last two decades of active life was the death or sickness of many of my old friends. Hubert d'Autremont, whose friendship no one could replace, died suddenly in 1946. Henry Carlisle and Temple Bridgeman, for many years office associates, had heart attacks that cut down their activities far too soon. Many other less intimate friends died or became ill, but I knew that with advancing years such losses were inevitable. These memoirs would be endless if they covered all of the unusual work and associations I found in the last 20 years. So I must confine the rest of my recollections to expeditions that would have thrilled any engineer at any time. The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. Three tectonic provinces within the Cordilleran System, are analyzed in terms of tectonic framework. (1) Precambrian terrain of North-Central Colorado; (2) The Pacific Northwest; and (3) The San Andreas-Garlock fault system and associated features. In each case a close relation- ship is seen to exist between: (I) Arcuate mountain development; (2) Precambrian basement fabric; (3) Major fault patterns; and (4) Major mineral occurrences. The arcuate trends developed when the basement was still mobile. Later competent deformation rejuvenated pre-existing lines of weakness. Because of the pre-existing arcuate framework, the rejuvenated faults frequently act as conjugate shears (strike-slip faults) flanking the old arcs. The conjugate shears intersect to form wedge- shaped plates. When such plates move forward along boundary strike-slip faults in response to post basement orogenic forces, new secondary fracture systems are generated in the country rock flanking the advancing wedge. The apex regions of the wedges are particularly favorable for detailed exploration.

The term olivine was first used in 1790 by J. Werner, and the corresponding mineral was so named because of its olive-green color (Hunter, 1941). Olivine is the principal component of the rock known as dunite. While by classic definition dunite is composed of 90% or more olivine, commercial use of these terms has resulted in more specific definitions. Commercially, the term olivine is used to designate a material that consists of 85% or more forsterite and contains 45 to 50% MgO, 39 to 42% SiO2, 5 to 8% Fe2O3, and has an ignition loss (LOI) of 1 to 2%. The term dunite designates a rock that contains 36 to 45% MgO, 36 to 39% SiO2, and has an ignition loss of as much as 10% (Teague, 1983). GEOLOGY Olivine is found in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks whose age varies from pre-Ordovician to Tertiary. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to the dunite variety of the peridotite group of ultrabasic igneous rocks. Olivine also occurs in basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and diabase and more rarely as an accessory mineral in granite and metamorphosed crystalline limestones. Mineralogy The term olivine refers to a group of orthosilicate minerals in isomorphous series with magnesium-rich forsterite (Mg2Si04) as one end member and iron-rich fayalite (Fe,SiO,) as the other. In most olivines the ratio of magnesium to iron varies from 16: 1 to 2: 1. Commercial olivine deposits contain a mixture of forsterite and fayalite with the fayalite content restricted to less than 15% (Reed, 1959; Teague, 1983). Accessory constituents may include primary minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, diopside, chromite, and garnet and secondary minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, talc, and vermiculite as alteration products. Chemical and Physical Properties The chemical composition of olivine can be expressed as either (Mg, Fe), SiO, or 2(Mg, Fe)O.SiO,. Table 1 presents chemical analyses for some commercial olivines. The physical properties of olivine are shown in Table 2. Distribution of Major Deposits Commercial olivine and dunite deposits are found in Norway, Japan, Spain, India, Italy, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Pakistan, and Mexico. Noncommercial deposits have been reported in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Caledonia, Greece, Brazil, and Canada (Teague, 1983). The present markets for olivine are characterized by low unit value, high volume, and high sensitivity to freight costs, so few deposits are commercially viable. Literature from the USSR indicates that considerable research on olivine refractories is being done. (Afansa'ev, 1988), lending credibility to the conjecture that commercial deposits are being mined there. In eastern Canada synthetic olivine is being produced by calcining chrysotile asbestos mine tailings. In the United States numerous lenses of olivine extend in a belt from northeast Georgia northeastward across western North Carolina. Total reserves in North Carolina and Georgia are estimated at between 125 and 200 Mt. The largest US deposit is Twin Sisters Mountain, located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in the state of Washington. This deposit, which has an outcrop area of 93 km2 and a relief of about 1 525 m. is estimated to contain 1 800 Mt of fresh, unaltered olivine (Teague, 1983). In addition, the US Bureau of Mines reports reserves of 50 Mt on Cypress Island in the state of Washington, and the literature reports eight complexes in southeastern Alaska, some containing cores of olivine as large as 1.6 km in diameter (Taylor, Jr., 1967). The world's largest deposit of olivine occurs in the Aaheim area of Norway, where reserves are estimated at a 2 000 Mt. Several other Norwegian deposits contain as much as 5 Mt each. In Japan the production of ultrabasic rocks is currently about 6 Mtpy, but the bulk of this output is serpentinite. Olivineldunite accounts for only 17% of this production. The major olivine deposit in Japan is located at Horoman Hill on the northern island of Hokkaido. Reserves at this deposit are estimated at 100 Mt (Anon., 1990). Spain is one of the largest producers of dunite. Reserves in the La Coruna District in northwestern Spain are estimated at 100 Mt. India, also a major dunite producer, has a large deposit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. In Italy olivine/dunite is mined from a deposit near Turin. In Sweden the largest deposit is at Arutats and is reported to be comparable in size to the Twin Sisters deposit in the United States. At present the only production in Sweden is from a deposit 30 km south of the town of Gallivare. Reserves at this deposit are reported to be between 1 and 2 Mt. Other significant deposits are: 1) in Austria at St. Stefan near Leoben, 2) in the Swat District of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, and 3) in Mexico at Cuidad Victoria in Tamaulipas (Anon., 1990).

Chemical metathesis and electrochemical reductive conversion of chalcopyrite in the presence of cupric ions were studied in sulfuric acid solutions for temperatures up to 90°C. The process results in the displacement of iron in the chalcopyrite lattice by copper ions with rejection of ferrous ions to the aqueous phase. The rate of reaction was found to be very slow, requiring subsieve-sized particles for extensive reaction to occur. The reaction was insensitive to copper ion concentration. Stirred ball milling of chalcopyrite introduces lattice strain. The reaction rate with strained particles was markedly higher than with annealed chalcopyrite. The reaction rate was found to be diffusion-limited, showing two distinct reaction stages corresponding to the formation of CuS (covellite) followed by Cu1.8S (digenite). The experimental activation energy for the first stage was 102 J (24.4 kcal) and the second stage 123 3 (29.4 -kcal) per mole. The rate-controlling process is diffusion of lattice ions, probably iron. The enhanced rate after milling is attributed to a recrystallization process which provides new paths for diffusion along dislocations and grain boundaries.

This paper presents methods and results of environmental planning conducted for a proposed coal and iron ore transshipment terminal which would be located on reclaimed land west of Lisbon, Portugal. Oceanographic, navigational, marine, structural, material handling, and financial studies of the terminal were conducted along with the environmental analyses. However, because of the proximity of the terminal to heavily used recreational resources, residential areas, and biologically valuable habitat, anticipating and reducing the environmental effects of the terminal to minimum levels was a very important part of the overall project. The results of the study indicate that even the impacts associated with worst-case conditions would be acceptable because of appropriate pollution control measures and planning.

A new method is proposed for measuring the grindability of solids and the energy efficiency of grinding mills. The method is based on a similarity law of fracture mechanics for elastic materials in conjunction with the self- preserving character of the size distributions formed when feed particles are comminuted individually in compression. The single-particle grindability index reflects more closely the inherent resistance of a solid to size reduction than the grindability indices currently in vogue. The performance of grinding mills is evaluated in comparison with the single-particle breakage mode, which has the highest energy utilization or efficiency of all mechanical grinding routes. For a given set of stipulations, the performance index of the commonly used ball mill when grinding dolomite is found m he only 21%. compared to 44% for the high-pressure roll mill, a newly-invented energy-efficient mill. The difference is also reflected in the energy consumed per unit mass offines produced when closed-loop grinding circuits are simulated, which shows that the high-pressure roll mill circuit is invariably more energy-efficient than the ball mill circuit, provided the energy input per pass through the mill does not exceed a prescribed limit. Theoretical upper bounds on the yield of the ground product in a desired size range and lower bounds on the energy investment are calculated from the single-particle breakage mode which has, apart from the highest energy utilization efficiency, a minimum dispersion in size of the comminuted particles. Data on theoretical hounds for seven minerals/ores are presented. It is argued that it is unlikely that a grinding mill can be designed and a comminution circuit constructed whose performance exceeds these bench-mark values.

One of the several problems facing society today is that of disposing of its solid waste. Each year this nation spends approximately 4.5 billion dollars to collect, transport and dispose of some 360 million tons of domestic and industrial solid waste. Although considerable sums of time and money have been spent in researching various techniques for solid waste disposal, it is presently agreed that sanitary landfilling represents the most economic and universally adaptable solution to the problem of solid waste disposal. However, regardless of the factors favoring sanitary landfilling as the waste disposal method of choice, it should be recognized as carrying with it a potential for the degradation of ground- and surfacewater resources. Through an interdisciplinary effort regulations were promulgated during 1971 in the State of Iowa to govern sanitary disposal projects. Consistent with a set of rationales developed to preserve environmental quality, these regulations set forth hydrologic and geologic standards designed to protect Iowa's water resources. Minimum requirements have been outlined in the regulations through which the natural favorability of potential landfill sites may be evaluated. Natural favorability is primarily defined in terms of the hydrologic and geologic relationships between a proposed landfill site and those in the locality of the site. The regulations specify that leakage from a landfill to a subcropping aquifer must be less than 0.04 cu ft/day/sq ft at the base of the landfill. This factor is offered to quantify the maximum allowable leakage for all sites in unconsolidated sequences underlain by subcropping bedrock aquifers, Based on groundwater research in Iowa, the assumption is made that 50 feet of till will be sufficient to inhibit the downward flow of liquids from a landfill into bedrock aquifers. This assumes a difference of no greater than 40 feet in hydrostatic head between the water table in the unconsolidated sequence and that in the bedrock aquifer. Owing to the fact that bedrock aquifers in many areas of the state are mantled by less than 50 feet of till the regulations provide for site modification, through engineering, to meet the specified leakage standard, In such instances the leakage factor is evaluated by means of the generalized Darcy's Law Q = PIA where:

Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some over steepened slopes which are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has indicated that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations will be summarized in this paper and field results shown.

A field trial of by distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technique was conducted at a longwall coal mine in Australia. This investigation was designed to assess the applicability of DOFS for microseismic monitoring in mining. The experiments used commercially available optic fiber cables, geophones and associated data acquisition instruments – a fiber interrogator and a seismic recorder. The fiber cable was deployed in a 300m deep hole and in trenches of approximately 3.5 km long on the ground surface around and across the longwall panel being mined. The results obtained from the experiments have shown that DOFS is able to acquire microseismic data with quality that is comparable to geophones. It has been proven that DOFS can achieve higher spatial resolution for seismicity sensing and higher accuracy for locating events than a geophone network. These characteristics are particularly useful for using DOFS to monitor ground vibrations associated with ground caving processes and rock fracturing events induced by mining and civil engineering. It was also found that far more additional seismic events were recorded by the fibers than by the geophones. Automated data discrimination and processing methods must be developed in order to utilize DOFS for real-time applications.

The high-grade Th-U-Y zone is one of the numerous mineralized zones found in the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites in southwestern Egypt. It is characterized by the thorium minerals thorite and thorogummite, which are closely associated with xenotime-(Y). This zone of mineralization is localized in the eastern part of the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites. This zone does not relate to the first phase of syenites that appeared on the surface but is linked to the other, hidden phase of the syenitic body. Additionally, the fluids responsible for the mineralization of this zone belong to the late-stage hydrothermal event as well as the fault action due to the fact that it had continued reactivations for a long period of time. The studied mineralized zone also contains ceriopyrochlore-(Ce),(Ce,Ca,)2 (Nb,Ta)2O6 (OH), fluorite (CaF2) and barite (BaSO4), which are found in considerable amounts, whereas apatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chromite (FeCr2O4) are rarely found together with Fe-oxi-hydroxides (hematite and goethite) with a minor amount of jarosite (KFe33+(OH)6(SO4)2). Finally, the main constituent mineral in the zone is the pseudomorph perthite in addition to quartz, which is found as deformed crystals. A technological sample was collected from this zone and was found to assay 4.62 weight percent thorium (Th), 0.37 weight percent uranium (U) and 3.12 weight percent rare earth elements (REEs). From the chemical and mineralogical composition of the studied technological sample, the leachabilities of Th, U and REEs were investigated using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) agitation leaching and pug leaching methods. The latter was found to be preferred under the conditions of 0.54 ton H2SO4 per ton of altered syenite at 110 °C for two hours.

"Around Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, the local geology includes the St. Peter Sandstone, which is easily minable and has facilitated construction of interceptor tunnels for storm water and sanitary tunnels since the 1800s. The elevation of the geologic units allowed gravity-driven flows from the downtown areas all the way to the Mississippi River. Through many years of service, some of these tunnels have experienced degradation and require maintenance. Additionally, increased stormwater surface runoff can result in internal pressurization of the tunnels, accelerating degradation. Because structural failure or collapse of any of these interceptor tunnels would create a significant repair challenge, the city of Minneapolis has been inspecting and designating tunnels in its system for periodic review and repair. One of these, the St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel, was rehabilitated using a grouting program. A hydrologic model was also used to improve understanding of pressurization events during some storms, leading to construction of a near-surface pressure dissipation chamber to provide increased hydraulic capacity. BACKGROUND The St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel in Minneapolis has three segments; the first two were constructed in 1942 and the third was added in 1987 (Figure 1). Segment 1 is approximately 4,700 feet in length and outlets to the Mississippi River. Segment 2 intersects Segment 1 approximately 3,500 feet upstream of the river outlet and continues for approximately 2,500 feet in a southeasterly direction. The third and newest segment is approximately 500 feet long. There are four different cross sections of tunnel along the entire system.Originally, tunnel construction often consisted of mining the St. Peter sandstone with a pressurized water lance and constructing wood lagging support (Payne, 1967). An underdrain was generally installed below the invert during construction; this resulted in localized dewatering and provided groundwater control during construction. Non-reinforced concrete liner sections were cast in place. Often void space existed between the tunnel liner and the native sandstone bedrock. These voids, particularly in the crown, prevent direct contact between the liner and the bedrock."

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.
