"The silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide in leach solutions that contain primarily free cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method overestimates the concentration of free cyanide and underestimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric (MP) titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues associated with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper, and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, analytical results obtained with the new MP-WAD method were found to be within about ±5% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.IntroductionThe silver nitrate titration method is widely used to estimate the concentration of cyanide in leach solution for purposes of cyanidation process control. In other words, titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide if the solution primarily contains free cyanide."

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

Sandstone escarpments surrounding western coal-bearing plateaus serve as critical habitat for animal species. Effects of mining subsidence on escarpment stability are not well documented; therefore, regulatory agencies may limit extraction of coal reserves underlying escarpments. Because millions of tons of this coal exist on Federal Lands, associated public revenues from Federal royalties, and valuable coal reserves, risk being lost. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze effects of subsidence on escarpment stability. Finite element models that incorporate bedding plane slip, gob formation, and movement along joints simulate escarpment subsidence observed in the field.

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

The Bureau of Mines conducts studies of the economic impacts of regulations on federal lands. These studies are part of the Bureau Potential Supply Analysis (PSA) program. To meet the needs of these studies, a methodology was developed to estimate operating and capital costs for a mineral deposit given its tonnage, grade, and depth. The format for the cost models in this study was developed at the Bureau's Western Field Operations Center (WFOC), Spokane, W. A., for studies of known and undiscovered resources on Federal lands. These cost models are described in a Bureau publication by Camm (1991).

Recent studies towards dragline excavation efficiency have focused on incrementally achieving automation of the entire excavation cycle. Initial efforts resulted in the development of an automated dragline swing system, which optimizes the swing phase time. However, the system still requires human operation for collision avoidance. For full dragline autonomy, a machine vision system is needed for collision prevention and big rock handling during the ‘swinging’ and ‘digging’ phases of the excavation operation. Previous attempts in this area focused on collision avoidance vision models which estimated the location of the bucket in space in real-time. However, these previous models use image segmentation methods that are neither scalable nor multi-purpose. In this study, a scalable and multi-purpose vision model has been developed for draglines using Convolutional Neural Networks. This vision system averages 82.6% classification accuracy and 91% detection in collision avoidance. It also achieves an 87.32% detection rate in bucket pose estimation tasks. In addition, it averages 80.9% precision and 91.3% recall performance across terrain recognition and oversized rock detection tasks. With minimal modification, the proposed vision system can be adjusted for other automated excavators. INTRODUCTION Complete excavator automation is widely regarded as the next phase in efforts toward improving earthmoving efficiency. Earthmoving often involves complex, forceful interactions between an excavator and the ground. The nature of these interactions depends largely on the type, properties and physical characteristics of the earth material. This process is further complicated by the random occurrence of tree roots, boulders and other such obstructions. Therefore, the ability of a controller to detect changes in the operating conditions, adjust the digging strategy and respond in real-time is of utmost importance. Early studies into autonomous excavation identified some key performance criteria which included the following [1]: • The autonomous excavator must be able to work in any type of earth material. • Its excavation accuracy must be within 50mm. • It should be able to handle different surface and underground obstacles autonomously. • It should be able to operate at the speed of the average operator in any condition. • Its operation should be capable of safe integration with other site systems.

Coal waste materials inhibit direct vegetation establishment due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss # I coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980&apos;s with little topsoil resource available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total-S = .. 38%; pH = 3.6), black, high (70%) in coarse fragments, and had a low water holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0 mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the influence of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime req.) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from < 4.0 to > 6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Application of 27 Mg ha-1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity in leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile, so long term water treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

The scheduled replacement of Inland&apos;s A & B coke batteries in Plant No.3 posed some serious problems in terms of pollution control and strained sources for medium volatile coal for a conventional blend. The state-of-the-art of air pollution control during the charging step in the conventional slot-type coke oven has been less than satisfactory. In addition, the work done at the Illinois Geological Survey showed that by preheating the coal blend prior to charging a greater percentage of Illinois coal could be used to produce a high quality metallurgical coke. To assist The Management in the- decision on A & B replacement, Inland Steel conducted a full-scale test program on coal preheating and pipeline charging utilizing the Coaltek system installed on No. 2 battery of the Semet-Solvay Division of Allied Chemical Corporation. The basic objectives of the test program at Semet-Solvay were as follows: 1. Determine the feasibility of producing high grade metallurgical coke from preheated blends containing more than 60% Illinois No. 6 coal. 2. Confirm the performance characteristics in one of the Inland blast furnaces of the coke produced with 75% Illinois coal in the blend. 3. Verify several claims by Coaltek such as: a) Pipelining the hot coal presents no difficulties while essentially eliminates the air pollution problems associated with the conventional charging system. b) Preheating of the coal blend permits the use of higher percentages of high volatile, marginally coking coals (such as Illinois No. 6) in the blend as compared to wet charging.

Location The Meggen Mine and the concentrator plant of the "Sachtleben Bergbau G.m.b.H." are located in the southern part of the Ruhr-district of the Federal Republic of Germany. The mine has been in operation for more than 100 years, but the concentrator described in this paper was built in 1962 and started up in January 1963. Goelogy and Mining The Meggen ore-body is of sedimentary origin and occurs in a zone of limestones, graywacke and shales of Devonion age. The average thickness of the deposit is 3 meters and, due to an intense folding of the area, the mineralized zone dips very steeply at 800 toward the north. The ore consists of 85 percent of sulfides and 15 percent gangue that mainly contains silicates from the host rocks. The principal ore minerals are pyrite (67 percent), sphalerite (16 percent) and galena (2 percent) with minor amounts of marcasite and only traces of chalcopyrite. As shown in Fig. 1, the sphalerite and galena are very finely disseminated in the massive pyrite of the Meggen ore, and a very fine grinding combined with a special flotation technique are required to liberate the valuable sulfides and to produce separate concentrates of lead, zinc and pyrite. Mining is performed by the sub-level stoping method and employs trackless equipment. Present operations provide ore from the 600 meter level. Annual ore production is 870,000 metric tons.

Barium fluorophlogopites were synthesized in the laboratory to investigate the effects of composition and crystal parameters on surface properties and floatability. The negative surface charge of mica is determined by the barium content, the crystal cell volume, the distance between the layer structure and the Ba-O bond length. The higher the barium content, the larger the cell volume and distance between the layer structure, and the longer the Ba-0 bond, the more negatively charged the surface is, and, hence, the more easily adsorbed are cationic collectors. When an anionic collector (sodium oleate) is used, barium oleate forms on the mica surface and hence chemical adsorption occurs.

This paper reports on mineral facies, ore textures, distribution of iron in sphalerites, and fractionation of sulfur isotopes in the Anvil ore body, Yukon Territory, Canada. Because the detailed structure and stratigraphy, both regional and local, are being studied by the geological staff at the mine and members of the Geological Survey of Canada, these topics will be discussed only briefly. The results of our study of the Anvil ore body have implications on theories of the genesis of ore deposits of this type, and these will be discussed. The Anvil ore body is the largest and most significant of three lead-zinc discoveries in an area of the central Yukon where major lead-zinc deposits were unknown only twenty years ago. The Vangorda deposit consisting of 22 million tons was discovered in 1953, followed in 1954 by the Swim Lakes deposit consisting of 10 million tons. The Anvil deposit, which consists of three ore zones, was discovered in 1964. The total reserve at Anvil mine is 63.5 million tons, with an average grade of 3.4% lead, 5.7% zinc, 0.16% copper and 1.2 ounces of silver per ton. This study is concerned primarily with the number one ore body which is about 2,400 feet long, up to 1,100 feet wide and 300 feet thick.

We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. "Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

A process for recovering manganese from low-grade manganese oxide ore through a reduction acidolysis-selective leaching method is investigated. Two types of biomass, sawdust and straw, were used as reductants. Reduction acidolysis, using concentrated sulfuric acid, was used to disrupt the structure of the biomass, allowing the biomass to be hydrolyzed into monosaccharides. Analysis by X-ray diffraction revealed that Mn2O3 was reduced to MnSO4. Then, in the selective leaching process, iron was removed through the formation of goethite. The optimized experimental parameters are as follows: reductant to ore mass ratio of 0.4, sulfuric acid to ore mass ratio of 0.9, water to ore ratio of 0.5, aging time of 18 h, leaching temperature of 95 °C, leaching time of 90 min, and solution pH of 2.5 to 2.8. Under these conditions and using sawdust as the reductant, the manganese leaching efficiency and iron removal efficiency were 91.8 and 99.2 percent, respectively.
