INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Reported- Projected Year (WLM) (WLM) 1975 1.59 5.68 1976 1.84 4.64 1977 1.68 4.08 1 Atomic Industrial Forum, 1976, 1977, 1978. 2 U.S. Dept. of the Interior, 1978.] Table 1 indicates that, even after adjustment to ensure better comparability an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company reported exposures for 1975-1977 exists; however, the apparent discrepancy diminished over the 3 years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. The need for a successful, efficient and reliable continuous face- haulage .system for use with continuous mining machines has been apparent since the first continuous miners were introduced some twenty-five years ago. Some thought and effort were given to the development of continuous haulage over the last twenty years or so. Some initial success was experienced in this area by The Long Company with a system involving bridge conveyors, as far back as the late 1950's. However, extensive success with continuous face haulage for use behind modern, high product¬ion, continuous miners escaped the industry until the early 1970's. It is true that continuous face haulage was successfully introduced into low seam mining, generally in seams ranging under 1.07 m (42") in height, in the 1960's, for use with relatively low production, low seam, auger type continuous miners. However, those available systems which have achieved success in the lower seams, where relatively low capacities are adequate, are not directly applicable for use with today's medium and high seam miners with their standard production capacity of 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm). Since the late 1960's and early 1970's, several machinery manufacturers, and at least two major coal companies, have devoted considerable expense, time and effort to developing truly successful continuous face haulage for use in coal seams ranging upward from 1.2 m (4') in height. Continuous face haulage equipment has been developed in the last five years employing a variety of transportation media and design concepts, including some which have received wide publicity such as those employing hydraulics, and pleated belt. The truth of the matter is, however, that the only universally applicable and widely successful continuous face haulage equipment introduced to date has been that employing a combination of bridge conveyors and mobile, self-propelled, bridge carriers, connected at the inby end to the tail of the high production continuous miner, and at the outby end attached directly to the panel conveyor (Fig. 1 & Fig. 2) or, on occasion, to a short, self-contained conveyor which, in turn, empties directly onto the panel conveyor. While these bridge type continuous haulage systems are available with both belt and chain conveyor components, the most widely applied and successful system in seams above 1.07 m (42") in height is that offered by The Long-Airdox Company. The standard unit for use with 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm) continuous miners is normally equipped with belt. However, they have built, and successfully applied, versions of this system employing chain conveyors, (Fig. 3), mainly for operators having extremely difficult mining conditions, including excessive amounts of water

Many problem associated with potential hazards in a proposed mining area may not be adequately appraised because of the complexity of trying to evaluate them in terms of production requirements. Frequently, encountered hazards have to be dealt with by day-to-day operational schemes that require the miner to either force a way through them or avoid them by blocking off the area in which the hazards are known to exist. These considerations, after the mine is in full production, can be costly to the mine operator and can increase the danger to the miners. A hazard-evasion computer program for mine planning that will appraise proposed mine layouts on the basis of existing or potential hazards has therefore been developed. The program is intended for use during the planning phase of a mine, where it should assist the mining engineer in making decisions in mine design. With the output from this program, the mining engineer should be able either to corroborate his judgments made on the basis of mining experience or to find unanticipated solutions to design problem. The program tests hundreds of possible solutions to a mining layout, and by sorting out the 10 best (based on a criteria of minimum-abandoned-coal) limits the number of choices that need to be considered and appraised for applicability to a given mine scheme.

Five kaolin crudes from the state of Georgia in the U.S. were investigated for processability with chemically enhanced magnetic separation (CEMS) technologies developed by Cytec. The technologies used magnetic reagent alone or in conjunction with specialty chemicals to selectively agglomerate and magnetize the desired minerals (impurities) to be removed by the conventional magnetic separation equipment. All crudes indicated treatability using CEMS. Results indicated that CEMS technology could be applied to different kaolin crudes to obtain a product with titanium impurities less than 0.6% TiO2 from individual crudes. The features and benefits of the technologies were also reviewed.

"Mining companies have started using quantitative tools, including computer models of community interaction, to gain intelligence on social risks surrounding their projects. Models of changes in community preferences regarding mining projects over time are useful for evaluating changes in project risk due to changes in the social license to operate. For example, agent-based models that use information diffusion models and social networks are useful for studying those changes due to information diffusion. However, such agent-based models are sensitive to many input parameters including the parameters of the diffusion model and the average degree of the social network. This work evaluates the sensitivity of such a model to diffusion and network model parameters (probability of imitation, probability of innovation, and average degree) using the first order and total sensitivity indices. The results show that the model is much more sensitive to the probability of imitation than the other two parameters. Thus, to reduce uncertainty surrounding the model’s predictions of community acceptance of mining, mines need to obtain accurate estimates of the probability of imitation. AGENT-BASED MODEL OF COMMUNITY ACCEPTANCE A few researchers have started using agent-based models to study mining systems (Fujiono 2011; Nakagawa et al. 2013; Bahr 2015; Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b). Nakagawa and co-workers used ABM to evaluate dynamics of a mining project’s stakeholder networks whereas Fujiono used ABM to study innovation diffusion in the mining industry. Our previous work has presented models and a framework for modeling information diffusion in a mining community and its impact on level of acceptance (a measure of SLO) of the mining project (Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b)."

Exploration for sandstone-type uranium ore bodies which will be exploited using underground mining techniques is usually executed in sequential fashion. Geostatistical methods can be used at the earliest exploration stages to design drilling programs which have a high probability of success in the location and delineation of mineable ore-grade mineralization, should such mineralization exist. In succeeding development stages, geostatistics may be used to outline and define the potential grade of reserves and to apply confidence limits on the grade estimation. Delineation of mineable reserves for mine planning requires extensive development drilling; using such drilling data geostatistical methods may be used to minimize the drilling needed to achieve a desired level of confidence in the calculation of mineable uranium ore grade and tonnage. Because sandstone-type uranium deposits tend to be pod-shaped and are generally aligned along a mineralized trend, this paper proposes a geostatistical method of calculating uranium ore reserves which accounts for this fact and predicts the area within a trend which is underlain by ore. This method uses an indicator value; that is, drill holes which contain mineable ore-grade intercepts are coded as 1, those that do not are coded 0. The indicator may be kriged over the mineralized trend to obtain an estimate of the area underlain by ore. The thickness and grade-thickness may be kriged, and the average ore grade may then be obtained by dividing grade-thickness by thickness, as is conventional for stratabound deposits. The mean grade is then multiplied by the kriged mean thickness to obtain an estimate of the volume, and thence tonnage, of mineable ore within the trend.

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

IINTRODUCTION Widespread activities in precious metal projects in the western U.S., Australia, Canada and other parts of the world have opened a flood-gate of consul- ting expertise to aid and accelerate the development process. Utilization of outside expertise has taken on many shapes and forms that have in some instances actually "decelerated" or "retarded" project progress. Small mines are especially vulnerable to apparent false-starts and misdirections, be- cause of their generally lower capital commitments, shorter lead times and limited mineral in-house expertise. Mine development for small mines requires fundamental approaches by knowledgeable consultants that are timely and cost-efficient and in line with accelerated development, if they are to be successful. The development process is obviously that process which brings a given deposit into production. Or, put another way, the process comprises all activities, decisions and commitments which take place from the moment an authorizing entity (usually a board of directors) com- mits to development and production (usually on the basis of a final feasibility study) until the first ton of ore is processed to a saleable product. The activities, decisions and commitments over a development period--such a period can range from as short as a year or less to as long as 5 years or more--are many, highly varied, and often interdependent. The development period is also particularly risky, not only because of the varied and interdependent decisions and commitments, but also because of capital demand amounts. Delays in the development process are thus particularly costly - sometimes so costly that small and often undercapitalized mining companies, failing to reach production and a cash flow within a planned period, face, if not bankruptcy, at least severe equity dilution or particularly onerous and restrictive covenants on additional loan financing. It therefor behooves especially small mining companies to examine ways to accelerate development. By doing so, the development process may actually meet planned scheduling. The development process generally comprises environmental impact studies completion, final engineering, permit- ting, financing, equipment and machinery procurement, contractor selection and construction -- such activities largely being overlapping. The paper addresses what the small mines operator or the small mining company can do with consulting firms to accelerate development. By "small mines" is meant open pit operations of 2000 tpd or less and underground operations of 500 tpd or less. By "consulting firms" is meant entities who do not possess an engineering and construction capability, such as Derry Michener Booth & Wahl, Pincock Allen & Holt, Behre Dolbear-Riverside, etc. The paper concentrates on gold projects. PRIORITY CONSIDERATIONS Of the items listed in the previous paragraph which comprise the development process, the two which most consistently appear to cause delays are permitting and financing. The former's delays can be due to political overtones and thus the delays may not be reasonably foreseeable. The latter's delays are most often due to inadequate preparation, and thus are avoidable. For the reason stated above, and considering that financing is fundamental to all of the activities which constitute the development process, the paper focuses on financing as the priority item which can most assist in accelerating or retarding the development process.

Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera Project started in June 1995 and concentrate production commenced early in the Third Quarter of 1997. The project is situated in North-Western Argentina and is being developed by Minera Alumbrera Limited which is owned by MIM Holdings Limited of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom Limited of Canada (25%). This paper outlines the key features that were incorporated in the design from both process and plant layout perspectives. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity gold circuits in both primary and regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

The Bureau of Mines designed, constructed, and operated an 18-inch- diameter, fluidized-bed combustor for highly caking coals to evaluate the method for possible application to power generation. In initial tests, combustion was carried on successfully, with carbon losses as low as 0.8 percent. Coal ash was not satisfactory as a bed material, but mullite proved to be acceptable. Overall heat-transfer coefficients from the bed (-20 + 50 mesh mullite) to a water-cooled tube were about 75 Btu/hr-ft2- °F.

This paper first discusses the physicochemical cleaning methods used to process fines followed by an analysis of the subprocesses of froth flotation and the adverse effects of slimes and particle oxidation. These subprocesses include the phenomena of interception, contact, adhesion and levitation. Preventive and corrective measures to combat the generation of fines and their effects are suggested. Preventive measures include controlled grinding, limited liberation, flotation at coarser sizes. Means of preventing oxidation and/or removing oxidation products are a1 so discussed. Corrective measure to increase recovery include intensive aeration, aggregation of particles, intensive mixing, increased retention time, and reduction of detachment. Measures leading to improves selectivity involve means to reduce slime coating, achieve selective mineralization of bubbles and minimize entrapment.

Since the late 19701s, the use of microcomputers in the minerals industry has grown to the point where today they can be found in virtually every plant within the industry. Their use in every aspect of instrumentation and control has increased the ease of operation and control of every phase of mineral processing. Their incorporation in sensors, transmitters, indicators, and controllers in addition to their use in distributed control and computer systems has provided operators with more timely accurate information than they have ever had before. This has led to an increase in the operator's effectiveness and an improvement in overall productivity. The ultimate aim of plant control is to maximize recovery in the mineral processing operation, and the microcomputer has spawned many tools that are now making this goal attainable. This paper discusses individual use of microcomputers in the areas previously mentioned as well as their collective use in overall control systems. The incorporation of local control systems in total plant control including the communication of information throughout all levels of plant management is also discussed. Finally the role the microcomputer is playing in today's plants is illustrated with numerous references to current examples.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for those of us in the coal industry -particularly in Asia -the preponderance of the power plants being planned or under construction designed to use coal as the power plant fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal, which has in turn encouraged many of us in the industry to develop new coal mines. One country that has enjoyed very substantial growth in coal production is Indonesia. This developing country of 195,000,000 people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands of Indonesia have emerged very quickly to become the third largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface mining methods. This paper will examine the surface mining of coal in Indonesia, as it continues to be an important part of the supply equation for coal in Asia.

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."

In situ stope leaching is an innovative mining system that reduces the surface impacts of conventional underground mining. As in any leaching operation, stope leaching requires hydrologic site characterization and control of leaching solutions. Several tracer tests, using sodium chloride (NaCl) in various concentrations, were conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in an underground experimental stope to simulate a leaching environment. The tests were conducted in fractured crystalline rock that was partially saturated. As tests progressed, the surrounding fractures became more saturated. A predominant flow direction away from the stope was found during testing. Testing procedures, preliminary results, and remediation ideas based on field observations are presented in this paper.

This paper presents pit slope monitoring and back-analysis case studies con-ducted to evaluate and, if possible, stabilize slopes at the Berkeley Pit in Butte, MT. Two specific slopes were studied in detail. The first slope was determined to be near limiting equilibrium, as evidenced by its response to the initiation and cessation of mining, while the second failed on three occasions. Back-analysis of the failed slope verified the laboratory-derived geomechanical properties of the earth materials. Early detection of slope movement can show a need to take action, including modifying slope geometry, dewatering if the slope were wet, and/or investigating and implementing artificial supports. Monitoring slope displacements in open-pit mines can supply data for predicting collapses and preventing serious damage, injuries, and/or loss of life.

This study investigates the use of a horizontally-baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feed rate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

In the early 1960's the Company, then named the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, was drilling the Continental ore body located near Fierro, New Mexico. Reserves of underground ore of sufficient quantity were indicated to build a mill. At the same time some ore from the Continental No. 1 mine was being milled at the Company's Bullfrog Mill, formerly a lead-zinc mill. The copper ore in comparison to the lead-zinc ores was very hard, abrasive, and heavy. These factors pointed out the possibility and attractiveness of autogenous grinding. While prior to this some study had been given to autogenous grinding, no large scale tests had been made. Such a program was carried out and from the pilot plant data the following was established: 1. Grinding of the ore by autogenous means could be accomplished. 2. This could be done in one stage; however, not at a satisfactory tonnage throughput rate. Thus, the use of a secondary unit has been employed. 3. Grinding in the secondary unit could be done by pebbles generated in the primary unit. This resulted in the scheme whereby the ore would be ground 100% autogenously. 4. Liberation of the copper minerals was excellent so that good recovery at a satisfactory concentrate grade would be obtainable.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.
